Book Description
Renowned for its accuracy, brevity, and readability, this book has long been the gold standard of concise histories of the Napoleonic Wars. Now in an updated and revised edition, it is unique in its portrayal of one of the world's great generals as a scrambler who never had a plan, strategic or tactical, that did not break down or change of necessity in the field. Distinguished historian Owen Connelly argues that Napoleon was the master of the broken play, so confident of his ability to improvise, cover his own mistakes, and capitalize on those of the enemy that he repeatedly plunged his armies into uncertain, seemingly desperate situations, only to emerge victorious as he blundered to glory. Exploring this neglected aspect of Napoleon's battlefield genius, Connelly at the same time offers stirring and complete accounts of all the Napoleonic campaigns.
Customer Reviews:
Very intersting look at Napoleon's battle plans.......2006-12-14
How did Napoleon succeed in battle? According to Connelly it was by having detailed and perfect plans that fell apart leaving Napoleon forced t0 improvise. Napoleon's ability to improvise on the battlefield were the true ways he won. His enemies expected him to follow his plans which were easy to discern and when he did not he won battles. This provides excellent accounts of various battles and does so without becoming bogged down in details. I highly recommend it for those starting out with Napoleon and want to understand how he won battles. (as someone who did their thesis no Napoleon this book would have been invaluable at the time). The book is well written and a quick read that will help understand the Napoleonic wars in the context that they were in.
A Special Kind of Genius.......2006-07-13
Dr. Connelly sees Napoleon as probably the greatest general of all time, in part because, paradoxically, 'he never really made any plans that he stuck to.'
That lack of planning would appear to be disastrous for anyone else. But for Napoleon it marked him as one of the most remarkable military leaders in history, Connelly said. 'He made plans so that he would have special men and supplies in the right places, but made everything else up as he went along. This equates to genius by him.'
It's considered a truism that 'No plan survives first contact with the enemy (Helmuth von Moltke).' So much so that many military organizations have altered the way they do planning so that they are making no presumptions of what the enemy will do. Get good leaders, get enough men and equipment, get them the food, ammo, etc. they will need, and point them in the right direction.
The interesting point is that Napoleon recognized this so long before von Moltke, Patton, etc.
The book is delightful. It's got a bit of humor, and analyzes Napoleon's battles from a slightly different aspect.
Customer Reviews:
Obvious bias against Napoleon.......2006-02-25
Blundering to Glory is intended to be an account of how Napoleon got lucky as a general and emperor. While there are numerous events where Napoleon was lucky or his marshals saved him from himself, there were times that Napoleon's abilities were apparent. Connelly unnecessarily bashes Napoleon throughout his book while overemphasizing his marshals' accomplishments.
Blundering to Glory is well written if the reader understands the bias Connelly shows against Napoleon. The information included on his battles and empire is informative making Blundering to Glory a good companion to other Napoleon books such as Horne's How Far From Austerlitz, Elting's Swords Around a Throne and Schom's Napoleon.
Deliberately Controversial but Informative.......2005-07-19
The extent and nature of Napoleon's genius will always be a matter of debate and controversy. Owen Connelly has added fuel to the fire in an interesting way. He is in fact trying to stir the pot, not least with the provocative title of this work. In the process, he has turned out his usual well-written, clear and concise work. This book is a great outline of Napoleon's campaigns, whether or not one agrees with his conclusions. I have put it to good use assigning it in my courses, and my students always enjoy it. They get a good, quick overview of Napoleonic warfare. Owen Connelly (an American) is one of the most knowledgable and objective living historians of the Napoleonic period.
Excellent introduction to the Napoleonic wars.......2004-09-03
It is a real gem of a volume, and although I have many other books on the Napoleonic Wars I have used it as a reference source countless times. The writing is very good, all trivial matters have been excluded and the maps although simple are numerous and informative. This book is the perfect choice for someone who wants to learn a lot about the wars of Napoleon without spending weeks to read the massive volumes of the other experts on the subject (Chanlder etc.)It gives the essence of Napoleon's operational art and reveals many little known aspects of his campaigns, like his excellent defensive maneuvers under desperate conditions in France in 1814.
A Little Disappointing.......2004-04-11
I started out very involved and interested in Connelly's premise, but as the book went on, he strained his credibility.
With such misleading statements as, "Massena scored a victory over [Wellington] at Bussaco in September 1810," Connelly made me wonder just how strenuously he had checked his facts and just what he may have twisted to suit his argument. Bussaco was a clear defeat for Massena, who had thrown five assaults at the British/Portuguese troops and been repulsed in every case. The allies were not only left in possession of the battlefield but had lost approximately 1,000 men to Massena's 4,000. How Connelly could count that as a victory for Massena is beyond me. Unless, of course the fact that, two days AFTER the battle, Massena's drive to outflank the allies caused Wellington to start his strategic withdrawal toward the Lines of Torres Vedras, is what Connelly calls a "victory."
And it made me wonder, what else did Connelly change or leave out...what may he have glossed over because it didn't suit his argument? One reviewer here complained that Connelly covered Napoleon's early battles extensively but barely covered what some consider to be Napoleon's most brilliant display of genius: the battles of 1814. Was 1814 glossed over, perhaps, because it was damaging to Connelly's argument? Who knows? It's too bad, really. This book had great promise, but it lost me through sheer sloppiness. My recommendation: Read it for its interesting approach, but don't expect to be convinced by the end of it.
Napoleon in a Nutshell.......2001-10-03
I first read this little gem in 1992 & I've just finished my 4th enjoyable reading. Personally, I can't think of a more readable, economical, introduction to the Napoleonic wars. Following an introductory chapter on Bonaparte, each chapter examines a separate campaign (Italy, Austerlitz, Spain, Russia etc). Professor Connely's lifetime of scholarship in this field is well reflected throughout to include a comprehensive bibliography and a very good bibliographic essay examining works published since the first edition of this book. Whether you agree or disagree with his thesis (Napoleon the opportunist) this work is well worth the price. I also recommend Connelly's FRENCH REVOLUTION/NAPOLEONIC ERA, a short but well-done college text examing the military, political and cultural events of that period. Prior to attacking David Chandler's massive opus The CAMPAIGNS of NAPOLEON, also see
David Gates' The NAPOLEONIC WARS, Charles Esdaile's Thr WARS of NAPOLEON & Gunther Rothenberg's ART of WAR in the AGE of NAPOLEON.
All three are available in paperback. Happy reading!

To Discover a Cripple.......2003-11-19
Doctor Rule reflects the years he has spent expanding himself and helping others. Crippled by Polio and seperated from those he loved as a small boy he sought acceptance and solace, first for himself and then for others. His realization that others were crippled propelled him forward in his study and research, giving care as he received it. Finally, he realized that we are all crippled and need acceptance and solace.
This not a sad trip through the twentieth century. This is a fun trip - a trip of challange and comfort. Take it with him and you will realize your needs and the needs of those around.
Dr. Rule gave me a kit of tools to deal with my crippled psyche thirty years ago and, now, I've added this map of life to that kit. It gets filled with joy as full as Colter was when wheezing away on a harmonica or tickling a piano with few or many at a party.
A dose of "Limping .." a day will not keep the doctor away but it will explain why he's there.
A Book of Courage.......2003-03-20
This is a book about courage, about overcoming the difficulties of being a handicapped person, and about building a life of making meaningful contributions to society.

looking in a mirror.......2007-06-14
I didn't like the book at first. But that is characteristic of anyone seeing something in themselves that needs to be changed. After going through the book 3 times and using it as a practical guide I am remembering how to like myself again. My "what if's" don't have to rule my life.
Best Self-Help Book Ever.......2007-05-12
This will probably be the only self-help book you ever need if you follow the Self-coaching techniques the author recommends. Logical, practical advice without fluff aids in identification, understanding, and most importantly, fixing of many problems that may have previously seemed beyond your ability to resolve.
Self-Coaching To The Rescue.......2007-04-08
This is an original and powerful book by the guru of self-coaching, Dr. Joseph Luciani. If you are looking for a detailed step by step approach to feel as mentally healthy as possible, this is the book for you. It will not only markedly reduce your anxiety and depression, it will teach you the principles of carving out a life that is joyful and meaningful for you.
Easy to read and digest with many helpful examples from his own life as well as his patient's lives. Highly recommended.
Read This Book!.......2007-03-20
I'm pushing sixty. I've been in and out of therapy and have been reading self-help books all my life. I ordered this (the CD version) with little hope. Not much seems new anymore.
Surprise! I was almost immediately engrossed. Luciani is wonderful. Using plain talk and simple analogies, he sums up what all the niche-marketers and long-winded "experts" are currently trying to sell us as "new." There's nothing new here. But Luciani's approach is refreshing, smart, and absolutely sane.
If you want to make a change (or changes) in your life, "The Power Of Self Coaching" will absolutely make a difference in your approach and give you information and activities that will not only show you how to change, but will inspire you to change.
How can anyone not love an author who wants his epitaph to read "I'd Rather Be Reading This"?

Sharon O'Connor is a professional cellist and amateur cook who had the bright idea to combine her affection for music, cookery, and books. She has assembled a volume of tasty recipes from well-known San Francisco restaurants, accompanied by a compact disc of chamber music recorded by the string quartet to which she belongs. This addition to the successful Afternoon Tea Serenade series combines recipes from 23 famed tearooms (the Ritz-Carleton, in its various cities, is heavily represented) with tea history and hints and a nicely chosen and well-played compact disc of short, accessible instrumental works. The books are available in both hardcover (with the CD ensconced in the back cover) and paperback (boxed, with the CD in a separate jewel box). They make a thoughtful gift for music or food-loving friends and a pleasant self-indulgence for oneself. --Sarah Bryan Miller
Customer Reviews:
Food & music: a classic combination.......2003-12-29
This made a unique wedding shower gift for a young bride moving to England with little knowledge of their customary afternoon "High Tea". She was thrilled with my gift. The music is an exquisite accompanment to the recipes. If you want a gift that is more than just another cookbook, then this is a sure winner.
Excellent Book to Learn and Enjoy the Art of Afternoon Tea!.......2002-05-17
I recently purchased this great idea! It's a cookbook, along with a CD! It's called "Afternoon Tea Serenade" by Sharon O'Connor. The author is a musician, and author, as well as a cook. Afternoon Tea Serenade is her 12th release!
The book contained within this set is great! I enjoy books that not only offer you the recipes, but also offer you history and techniques. This book tells you not only the origination of tea (the drink, that is), but also the custom of "afternoon tea". There are tips on how to choose tea, how to brew the perfect cup of tea, how to make iced tea, as well as how to make some herbal teas! She suggests how to pick suitable tea cups, and offers some suggestions as to how to throw a themed tea party, such as a Bridal Shower Tea.
The book is filled with recipes from famous tea houses in the United States, England and Ireland. Such recipes include Welsh Rarebit, Cucumber and Mint Sandwiches, as well as Barmbrack. I have tried quite a few of the recipes and they each have turned out wonderfully.
Included within this set is a CD, which contains classical music to set the atmosphere. When I listened to this CD, I felt like I was back in the late 1800s during Victorian times! Artists on this CD include Bach and Mozart. Each piece is wonderful, and I am sure you will recognizea few, if not all of the pieces!
Treat yourself, or a friend, to something special this Spring, and buy this set! Then, call over your family and friends and have yourself a tea party!
What fun for tea-lovers!.......2000-05-29
I love this book! Having recipes from famous tea rooms is fantastic and fun - it's interesting to compare them. And although the book is divided into tea rooms, there's a good index in the back if you just want to look for a particular type of recipe. Plus, the beginning section contains a wonderful yet concise history of tea drinking as well as an excellent overview of different teas. The music is nice, too, but to me, the book is worth the full cost!
Words and music that transport, delight and refresh the soul........1999-07-06
I found this lovely book while perusing the Amazon.com website. It serendipitiously has become a treasure book to me. The author takes one on a vicarious "tea" trip to hotels across the world and gives access to recipes from the best Chef's. All this made available while the reader is relaxed in her own home listening to the beautiful music of flute, harp, viola, violin, and the authors cello. Pour a cup of tea and experience lifes' finest. I plan to order additional copies to give as gifts to my friends, and houseguests. The historical reference to tea is of utmost interest to those who love everything about tea. Thank you Ms. O'Connor-well done.
A necessary addition to one's Tea book library!.......1999-05-30
This is the perfect book for Tea novices and afficianados alike! To have actual recipes from the cream of the crop Tea Rooms in the world is quite nice. The recipes are clear and very simple to follow and the results are fantastic! Additionally, having the history of the Tea Rooms to share with my guests is a real plus and the beautiful music from the companion CD creates such a relaxing atmosphere. I have been in the Tea business for several years, I thought I had seen it all, this set has truly been an asset in my Tea Room and has left me thoroughly impressed!

So-so.......2002-06-29
The music is very lovely, and the history and background on tea and its uses over time are somewhat interesting, but it's just a little too high-brow for me. The recipes are a little too labor-intensive.

Customer Reviews:
ONE OF THE MORE HELPFUL BOOKS ON THIS SUBJECT OUT THERE........2007-09-15
I found this work to be most helpful. It provides step by step instructions and is great for the beginner. The book is full of designs for use with Polymer Clay and is quite detailed. The photography is great and quite clear. The text is full of helpful hints and tips as to techniques that are easy to follow. I also enjoyed the great ideas for projects I gleaned from this work. One of the strong areas of this book, unlike some others I have in my collection, is that the author does not assume that you already know something and goes ahead and explains even simple steps. The only weakness I found was that some of the information is just a bit dated as so much progress has been made in this field over the past two or three years. This is not a big problem though as there certainly is no "bad" information. This is a good one to add to your collection as it is nice to have on hand to answer questions as you are working. It is also a very handy book to have if you happen to be teaching a course in working with Polymer clays. The instructions here can be worked into a lesson plan quite nicely. Highly recommend.
Good book to teach canes and give examples.......2005-12-16
The author shows how to make canes and that is pretty much all that is in this book. Not much if you are looking for other techniques.
5stars for us beginners.......2005-06-14
Im new at polymer clay and this book is just perfect.Ive loaned it out but kept track of it so no one forgets to bring it back too..I really couldnt have learned so much about canning and the craft of beads in polymer clay without this book..ITs a must add to your clay library.Mrs.C.
I love this book.......2002-10-14
This book got me into making jewelry. It has everything from the very simple, to complex canework. I've taken many of the examples in this book and made them into my own design. I would definitly recomend this book for anyone, if your just starting out or you already know what your doing.
Colorful projects ranging from basic to challenging.......2000-07-21
Creative Clay Jewelry is one of the many books that attempt to cover polymer clay work from the very basics to quite advanced. While other books are probably more successful at that (Sue Heaser's Polymer Clay Techniques Book, for example), Creative Clay Jewelry has some good projects and solid information, and would be quite useful to the beginning to intermediate clayer.
It's unfortunate that there's no real indication of level of difficulty in the projects; they don't follow any logical progression. Some of the early projects use very basic techniques only - jelly rolls, marbling - which could probably be discussed in the introduction section. However, just a few projects in, there's a geometric pattern that would be quite difficult and frustrating to do as your third or fourth PC project. I'd advise careful consideration when selecting a project from this book.
Dierks does provide a much more detailed ingredient list, including things like findings and clay amounts, which other books tend to skip. She even specifies particular brands and colors, but it isn't necessary to adhere to them.
On a more personal note, I got less use out of this book than most of my PC books, simply because the projects were very bright, busy, and colorful - and that's very far from my style. But for those who love the casual, cheerful look that polymer clay can provide, this book might well be great.

Great for beginners and inspirational........2007-02-13
Cavender is a talented polymer clay artist who really knows her stuff. While I prefer the bead making side of polymer clay, I find techniques in this book to be easily adaptable for my purposes. Techniques and tools are thoroughly explained and projects have apt photos. Beginners will not be overwhelmed as Cavender has a knack for simplifying the most intricate looking pieces.
This book is FUN and Informative!.......2007-01-16
This is one of the most delightful new polymer clay books! I have been working with polymer clay for 12 years, and still found this book full of fun, colorful ideas. Kim Cavender is a wonderful, creative clay artist and this is a book that everyone can learn from and get creative new ideas. Kathy Weaver
One of the best books ever!.......2007-01-13
I have several polymer clay books, and Kim's books is one of the best! Her projects are easy to do and colorful. The directions are easy to understand, and the photos are clear. The book has jewelry projects, projects for the home, and more.

Customer Reviews:
Needs more color.......2006-03-02
The book gives you a rundown of what kinds of clays there are, what tools to use, and walks you through various craft projects. Though there's pictures for just about every step, they're all in black and white. The pictures don't really do much for such a colorful medium like polymer clay.
The table of contents doesn't reveal much about the book's contents. Chapter titles like Sentimental Circle, Bangle Beauty, Cute as a Button, and Crazy Daisy are cute enough, but you have to browse through the book to find out exactly what all these things are. Browsing would be more fun if the pictures were all in color.
There's not that much focus on technique and how to make your own unique projects. It's mostly about how to make various objects in a very specific way (a starry clock, a haunted candle, etc.), though I suppose there's nothing to stop anyone from tweaking the projects and taking away ideas or tips that can be reused.
Overall, it's not a book I'd recommend.
very dissapointing.......2005-04-19
i bought this book because of its two great authors but when i got it i found that other than the finished product all pictures are B&W which is a shame when doing a book on polymer clay which is such a colorful medium.
in addition, most of Barbara's projects shown in this books are projects that i have from her other (very good) book "stamping with clay"

If you've ever looked at height-weight tables in your doctor's office or calculated your body-mass index from a formula in a fitness magazine, and realized that you're technically overweight, this book is for you. Not only does it expose the highly flawed methodology used to calculate those ideals, it also argues that you can be fit at any weight. In fact, the author asserts, being heavier is actually better for you in some ways: statistically, you have a better chance of living a longer life if you're both active and on the heavy side. But there's the rub: being heavy in itself is no virtue. Exercise and healthful eating are still the keys to vitality and longevity. It's just that weight control has been unrealistically foisted upon us by the insurance and fashion industries, making us miserably concerned with girth when there's often no need for worry.

In this authoritative, easy-to-read book, Glenn Gaesser, an exercise physiologist, challenges the conventional wisdom that excess body fat poses a danger to health. He explains that it is the fat in your diet — not your weight — that is harmful, and presents scientific evidence of the benefits of body fat. In addition, Gaesser presents a “20/20 program” for achieving optimal health and metabolic fitness through 20 minutes of daily moderate exercise and a complex-carbohydrate eating plan. This edition includes a new introduction and updated research. “Challenges the common beliefs that ‘thin is best’ and ‘weight loss improves health.’ ” — Pat Lyons, author of Great Shape

There's More to Being Fat Than "Obesity Kills"..........2005-11-11
What if being overweight could be healthy? Apparently, it's not the pipe dream the majority of the world and researchers would like us to think. In Big Fat Lies, Glenn Gaesser unlocks the myths about obesity specifically the biggest of them all "obesity kills". Glenn is a graduate of the University of California and taught at UCLA and the University of Virginia so he isn't just blowing smoke up our fat butts.
He feels the obsession of a person's weight needs to be dropped mostly because weight loss is no guarantee for improved health. With his book he hopes to reshape your thinking on the various aspects of body weight and health, I think he will. Obviously, some facts are unquestionable if you eat only bad food and don't exercise you're in trouble. But overweight people can be strong and healthy; sometimes stronger and healthier than their slim counterparts.
With simple truths and simple facts Glenn explains how our expectations of body weight have been directed by insurance companies, the diet industry (30 billion plus industry), the fashion industry and of course media appeal. He thinks we should be focusing on metabolic fitness instead of weight. He discusses in great detail his views on metabolic fitness.
Glenn succeeds in taking the focus off weight. Instead he sheds light on the importance of physical activity over "exercise". The purpose of the physical activity is not to lose weight but to be healthy by moving. Lo-Carb-ers will not be impressed with the Nutrition for Metabolic Fitness section but I like how he encourages adding instead of taking away. According to him "No foods are strictly off limits."
A lot of what's discussed are the studies ignored over the last 20+ years showing body fat is not the problem. "Fat in the arteries and fat on the body are different and not necessarily related." Study after study becomes a bit tedious after a while but it is still good to know there's more to the studies than "obesity kills." For sure this book won't appease the die hard skeptic but for those of us who are obese, eat our fruits, veggies and continue a daily bout of physical activity, at least we know for sure it isn't all in our head. We're healthy.
I'm sure when you are finished reading Big Fat Lies you'll have a different view on the role of fat in your life. Pun intended. Reviewed by M. E. Wood
Must Have Advocate.......2005-04-08
I'd love to have a case of this book so that I could gift one to every health care professional who has made snap decisions on their patients based on visible fat. Well, I guess I'd need more than a case of them, wouldn't I... because that tendency is far too prevalent.
I am a healthcare worker, and have long had a love/hate relationship with my fat body. Yes, I do think obesity exacerbates preexisting illnesses; but I don't believe fat causes illness in and of itself. Looking at comparative studies of people who are of moderate weight and even thin who have the same dietary and exercise patterns would be a more useful guage than immediately assuming that weight loss will magically make health problems disappear. Many times, it doesn't.
Recently the New England Journal of Medicine published a study that claimed that weight loss could extend your life by a (staggering) five to nine months. Wow. Whoopee.
Could be the most important book you read this year........2004-11-30
Glenn Gaesser, Big Fat Lies (Gurze, 2002)
Do yourself a favor-- find this book and read it as soon as possible.
The first two sections of this book show a study in selective reasoning by the medical establishment. Gaesser provides a mountain of evidence that all we've been told by the insurance industry, the medical industry, and the fitness over the last half-century or so regarding weight loss is a lie. We hear some of it now and again on the news, especially how low weight is linked to osteoporosis, but you've never seen this much of it together all in one place. Gaesser's position is that exercise, not weight, is primarily responsible for a person's health, and that "exercise" as we know it today (high-impact aerobic exercise) is not the be-all and end-all foisted upon us. All of which points out why overweight and obese people should be reading it (and popularizing it), and they are its target audience to be sure, but Gaesser makes a lot of noise about the normal- or underweight unfit, too.
The first two parts of the book are the theory, the third part is the practice. Gaesser provides a simple, easy-to-follow exercise regimen suggestion, infinitely customizable for the average person, and dietary suggestions without ever proposing a diet per se; his goal is to steer us towards eating healthier rather than rationing out what we can and can't eat. Again, the thin will benefit from following his guidelines just as much as the overweight. It's all common sense, of course, but he does point out a number of things that may surprise the average grocery shopper (for example, the actual amount of fat to be found in whole milk, which is staggering).
The book's only real flaw is stylistic; Gaesser, not to much surprise, has adopted the medical-jargon use of "overweight" and "underweight" as nouns rather than adjectives, and it's enough to drive the average stickler up the wall. It is certainly not, however, enough to put anyone off reading this. It may be the most important book you read all year, and should go on the short shelf of sacred books next to Peele's The Diseasing of America. **** ½
educated decisions.......2003-04-16
Read this book before you try one more plan to get thin. It helps you see that, for most people, losing weight is an aesthetic decision, not a health one. You can look at yourself more kindly, realizing that you are not ruining your health, unless you actually do have a weight related condition. You can look at other big folks more kindly- be honest; you know you judge others!- realizing you have no more idea of whether they are unhealthy than their thin counterparts-as if it was any of your business! But, really, the facts helped to loosen the hold this topic had for me. There are other books that go farther with appearance acceptance, but this one is a great start to feel confident it's really okay to go there!
The Truth About Weight Tables.......2002-10-31
I learned the truth about both Weight Tables and Diets, as well as the importance of Nutrition and Exercise. In this book, Dr Glaesser explains the historical context of the American Weight Tables and their formation by Met Life Insurance Company. His extensive research has shown that people with higher weights can be fit and sometimes even fitter than the ones that actually fit into the prescribed weight tables. For me this is a startling finding. I am relieved to learn that Glaesser recommends allowing our bodies to equilibrate around our natural set point rather than yo-yo dieting to try to attain a weight that we have been taught is optimal. In depth discussions of good vs bad types of body fat are also informative and further make Big Fat Lies a good and instructive read.

This is the autobiography of pen-and-ink artist Floyd Sonnier of Lafayette, Louisiana. Written and illustrated by Mr. Sonnier, the book tells the story of growing up as a French-speaking Cajun in south Louisiana in the 1940s and '50s. The book - which took some 10 years to write and 35 years to illustrate - recounts the way life was for him and his family growing up in a culture whose first language was French, whose religion was Catholic, and whose livelihood was the family farm. The combination of intimate first-person stories and detailed drawings of scenes from days gone by creates an insightful, refreshing new view of a colorful era in south Louisiana history.
