The Cambodian Holocaust.......2002-07-22
When I was younger I heard bits and pieces about Cambodia and Pol Pot in the news, but didn't really know what it was about. Through "Destroy You" I finally know about the horrendous and evil history that was being made in that country during the 70's and 80's. This biography follows the story of one particular educated Cambodian family who was exiled from Phnom Penh, along with the entire city full of inhabitants. The Khmer Rouge was doing its job of "cleansing" the city of anything of western influence. Most of the educated populace, including doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc., were murdered, leaving a population of mostly uneducated slaves whose job was to work in the rice fields all day long. Music, laughter, and play were not allowed. The people were taught that everyone was of equal value and equally dispensable, and everyone should work hard to contribute to the good of all with the meekness, acceptance, and fortitude of the water buffalo.
Meanwhile, entire villages were massacred if complaint about the government was overheard. Life was incredibly miserable, especially knowing of friends and relatives that had been killed or had disappeared. When Viet Nam invaded Cambodia tens of thousands of Cambodians attempted escape to Thailand, but Thailand did not want them all, and forced many back at gunpoint, killing anyone, including children, who refused to climb down the treacherous, land mine-studded cliff back into Cambodia. Throughout this book I was grieving about the incredible evil that humans can perpetrate against other humans, and amazed at the endurance and determination of this family and others that managed to survive all this horror.
A story like this can yank us out of any tendency towards self-pity or complaining about the minor difficulties in our lives. I have also read the follow-up book, "Bamboos and Butterflies", about this family after they immigrated to the U.S. Their will to survive is carried on as they integrate into a new culture, and reminds us of why so many seek refuge in the U.S.
A frightening, moving and important story.......2002-01-05
Joan Criddle has woven a gripping account of the personal experience of one young woman, Teeda Butt Mam, and her family under the oppression of the Khymer Rouge. Although I knew a little about Cambodia's killing fields, this book reveals in considerable detail the brutality and horror of Pol Pot's regime. Yet, it's an inspiring tale of survival, courage, and family loyalty under the most extreme conditions of deprivation, fear and suffering. I couldn't help but wonder if I would have had the strength, ingenuity and willpower to survive such horror. The book also includes many interesting details about traditional Cambodian life and culture.
I highly recommend this book. It's an amazing story!

A Classic.......2006-09-16
I was drawn into this book after first viewings of the film "The Killing Fields." At the time, I was unaware of a lot of the background to many of the events depicted onscreen, and was looking for something a bit more detailed.
As it turned out, this book was something far greater than that, on a par with the writings of Primo Levi, or Elie Wiesel as a depiction of survival amid the most grotesque extremes in ideological depravity humanity could conjure up. Through survival, later stardom and human rights work, Dr. Ngor became (and posthumously remains) one of the great human rights educators of our time.
In this eloquent autobiography, he also accomplishes something else - vivid and affectionate portrayals of Cambodian culture (pre-revolution), and a detailed description of the slide into civil war and the anarchic chaos of Phnom Penh immediately before the fall.
And he also crafts a love story; a memorable and majestic one, of a romance that he attempted to nourish in spite of the societal upheaval occuring around him and his wife. The detail in his descriptions of family are affectionate, and also written with a rare clarity - for this, among many other reasons, this book is a classic.

Haing Ngor Review.......2002-02-20
What a great story of determination and power. The irony of it all was, that, after all the suffering he went through, he died because of someone trying to steal his watch.
The Khmer Rouge seemed to be illeterates governing a country, and the result wasn't good. I cannot believe they inflicted the pain they did on their very own race. In the 20th century, creating an equal society was UNREAL. The Khmer Rouge, some men, most of them teenagers with guns, did not realise this. Even more surprisingly, as strict as the Khmer Rouge were, the Khmer officials got as much food and commodities as they wanted, while they fed the rest of cambodia a watery rice.
The ending left me thinking, especially about his niece Sophia. Haing Ngor, had lost everything by then, but gained fame. Which really at the time, wasn't much to him. I recommend the reader to buy this book as not only is it interesting and very hard to put the book down once you start, but its historical accuracy and the amazing events described are unbelievable. Anyone over the age of 16 who reads this book will love it, and for a variety of reasons.

A man of extraordinary courage.......2000-11-13
This is an outstanding portrait of a man who survived the barbaric reign of terror of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Anyone who has seen the movie "The Killing Fields" has a cursory understanding of the Khmer Rouge and their attempt to transform Cambodian society during their control of the country from 1975 to 1979. However, this film omitted most of the astounding atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge as anyone who has visited Tuol Sleng S-21 in Phnom Penh (as I have) can tell you. In this book Dr. Ngor relates his horrifying experiences of life under the Khmer Rouge in detail and in the process educates the reader as to just how horrible an existence it really was.
This book is remarkable because of the detail related by Dr. Ngor and the personal nature of its content. Many Cambodians to this day will not talk about his period in their lives. For many, the mental and physical abuse they suffered during this period was too painful to re-live ever again. As I read this book, I could not help but wonder how Dr. Ngor was able to keep himself together.
Dr. Ngor effectively puts the period of Khmer Rouge rule in historical context by explaining the historical events and forces which led to their capture of the country. These events and forces included the People's Republic of China, North Vietnam, the Vietnam War, the United States, and of course, the C.I.A.
I admire Dr. Ngor for his extraordinary courage, and I regret that I did not have the opportunity to meet him during his lifetime. May he rest in peace.
A Harrowing Autobiography.......2000-08-25
Dr.Ngor appeared as an actor in THE KILLING FIELDS playing Dith Pran, a man who sufferred greatly at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. Ngor's own true life story, though, was much more horrific. He was starved and tortured repeatedly during the dreadful Cambodian "Year Zero," while confined in a Khmer Rouge concentration camp. If you think that you have troubles, read this book and be humbled.

A cross-cultural meeting between Middle America and Cambodia, A Blessing Over Ashes is an unusual story that combines classic coming-of-age events with the sad history of a young refugee from the devastated Cambodia of the last decades. Soeuth--the refugee--came to live with the Fifield family at the age of 14. Adam, the family's eldest son, narrates the story in conversational slang; reading this book is like listening to an old friend tell his surprising life story. Beginning chapters alternate between Adam and Soeuth's childhood, and the differences are striking, often disturbing: afternoon shopping trips contrasted with work camps, cultural events with exchange students compared with starvation and severe beatings. As they attend school together (Soeuth tutoring Adam in math) and fish (Soeuth successfully with his bare hands, Adam unsuccessfully with rod and reel), they become somewhat closer, but throughout the book there is a sense of distance from Soeuth, a feeling that he is not communicating deeply with anyone. Both boys move through their lives--Adam as a reporter, Soeuth as a mechanic--experiencing relationship troubles, cross-country moves, career frustrations, a marriage, and other fairly standard events. After years believing his Cambodian family dead, Soeuth discovers many relatives are still alive and struggling, and he is able to establish contact with them, which sadly seems to bring more responsibility and guilt than satisfaction. Ending the book on a humorous note, a conversation about a fortune teller and his prediction for Soeuth's life is a hopeful glimpse into what the future may bring now that his two worlds have been brought together. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
From a writer of insight, wit, and compassion
comes the remarkable story of a boy from the
killing fields of Cambodia who irrevocably
changed the life of an American family.
A Blessing Over Ashes
In clear vivid prose, Adam Fifield recaptures the snowy night when he, at the age of eleven, along with his mother, father, and younger brother, waited to welcome fifteen-year-old Soeuth into the family. The boy shuffled in, short and scrawny, a baseball cap shading his downcast eyes. He spoke not a word, yet a silent terror hovered around him.
The author describes the events of the months that followed: Soeuth's wariness and detachment; his fear of being seized in the night by his parents' ghosts; Adam's discovery of his new brother's amazing physical skills, like catching fish with his bare hands; and Soeuth's eventual and painful emergence from years of darkness. As Soeuth gradually adjusts to rural middle-class America, a world fantastically foreign from the horrors of his homeland, a bond is formed with his new brothers that would permanently affect them all.
In his senior year of high school, Soeuth leaves home, lured by an anesthetic world of drugs and alcohol. Over the next few years, the brothers drift apart, distracted by college, jobs, girlfriends. Then Soeuth finds out that the members of his Cambodian family -- whom, for fourteen years, he has presumed to be dead-are alive. The discovery is the beginning of a new journey -- one that reunites Soeuth with his long-lost brothers, sisters, and parents...and with his American brother Adam.

A unique depiction of time, place and family.......2001-08-01
There are dozens upon dozens of books on the killing fields of Cambodia out there...this one is different, because it tells the story of Adam and his Cambodian foster brother, Seouth. I was drawn to this perspective and enjoyed Adam's writing style very much. His descriptions and use of language are effective at getting emotions across without being sentimental and sloppy. At the end of the book, Adam and Seouth travel to Cambodia, and Adam made me feel as though I was there with them, riding a motobike down a dusty road, taking in the sights and sounds of an unfamiliar culture. Many books do not emphasize how poor the people of Cambodia are in a tangible way...Adam does this beautifully. If you are interested in how historical events affect individuals or have brothers or sisters, this book could change how you look at the world and reaffirm your relationships with others. (P.S...you might cry and laugh! I did).
Riveting.......2001-07-25
I particularly recommend "A Blessing Over Ashes" for anyone interesed in 20th Century Southeast Asian history, as it puts a painfully personal face on the wars in Cambodia. But even for those who know little about this era, I would recommend it as a compelling story of one person's experiences as a member of two very different families. It is a story of personal identity, and it is a story of our common humanity. Are we defined by race? Blood? Experience? Where, in the end, does Soeuth belong? How can he reconcile his divergent experiences as a Cambodian and as an American? Much of this book is tough going. Soeuth and Adam's visits to the ghostly "re-education centers" are almost unbearably sad, and reminded me of some of the observations Philip Gourevitch makes of Rwanda in his work on another place, another genocide, another year, "We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families." "A Blessing Over Ashes," is as honest a book as I have ever read.
Exquisite Combination of Truth and Compassion.......2001-03-27
Biographies written by journalists often offer rare treats. This one is no exception. Adam Fifield takes the extraordinary circumstances that brought a young Cambodian boy into his family and tells us how they became true brothers. This book will open your heart and your mind and stay with you for a long, wonderful time.
Exellent Book.......2001-03-18
This book gives vivd description of Vietnam War also it has very exciting and intersecting scence which make you whant to keep reading more tmo find out what well happen next.
good book, that's it-.......2001-02-02
The book is about an american family who adopts a Combodian boy who suffered a lot, an lived a very different reality from them. The book is told by one of the american brothers. It is a very good book but I think it was quite "descriptive". I think the end could have been better. It seems as if the author leaves you in the middle of the story, as if he did not know how to end it. I enjoyed it, and it is not a "heavy" book, but not excellent for my taste.

Book Description
This is a question that still bluntly assaults every reporter and cameraman covering war anywhere in the world. When to stop? Where to stop? Ever to stop? We lived with that challenge all during the war, yet so many of us felt invulnerable; was it innocence, arrogance, the intoxication of war? We were objective reporters, weren't we, not combat soldiers. We gave ourselves exemptions from death. We armored ourselves with naivet¨¦.
In all, this book is a tribute to all slain journalists who brought the war to your living room; some caught in a firefight, some shot out of the sky, some who vanished, some executed. Yet even while the shooting was going on, there was a war about the war, about whether the United States had misread history and the dying and killing was all a waste. Those post-mortems would come later, too late to end the killing.

Shines the light on a forgotten corner of history.......2001-08-16
Everyone knows about the war Vietnam, but few remember that the United States battled the Viet Cong and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia as well. And even fewer remember that in just six short months in 1970, over two dozen journalists were killed while reporting on this forgotten corner of the Vietnam War, many of whom were captured and tortured to death by enemy forces.
T. Jeff Williams provides an illuminating, ground-level view of Cambodia during the war and what it was like to be a correspondent when so many of your colleagues would go out to report the story and just simply never come back. But it is Kurt Volkert's section of the book that really shines.
Volkert gives a factual and detailed, yet intensely personal look at efforts by him and others to investigate and locate the graves of five newsmen who were killed chasing the scoop south of Phnom Penh. He chronicles the ups and downs, the sadness, the frustrations, the detective work, and the ultimate sense of closure that comes from helping scour the Cambodian countryside for five journalists and friends buried in shallow graves twenty years earlier.
All in all, this is an excellent book on a topic that has received almost no attention over the years. Well recommended for anyone interested in journalism, Cambodia, or the Vietnam War.
Fascinating Book!.......2001-05-14
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I found it fascinating. The first part, written by AP/CBS News correspondent Jeff Williams details the intricate history of Cambodia as it struggles against forces from within and without during the turbulant 60's and 70's. Part of the book is a fascinating portrait of what it's like to cover a war in Asia, specifically Cambodia. At times the country was terrifying, at other times comedic and at others beautiful, graceful and exotic. Under the pressure of competition, journalists jump in cars and race off down dangerous roads looking for action so they can scoop the other networks. During a 2 month span in 1970, 25 of those journalists who drove down those lonely roads didn't come back.
The second part of the book is a description by Kurt Volkert of his feelings loss and deep sadness for his murdered comrads and his persistant and amazing detective work in locating their bodies in the countryside TWENTY YEARS LATER. How he did it, what he thought of the system that forced journalists to risk their lives for a story is gripping stuff.
This is a great read!
What Happened Out There?.......2001-05-10
During the Vietnam war, Cambodia seemed to be a forgotten country. But this book shows what it was like to be a journalist on the front lines in what must have been terrifying times. The book recounts how the war in Vietnam spread to Cambodia in 1970 and how 25 foreign journalists reporting the war there were killed by the Khmer Rouge and North Vietnamese.
The book is in two sections. In the first one, T. Jeff Williams describes the historical events that led Cambodia into a bloody conflict with Vietnam, its ancient enemy, and describes the 1970 coup that overthrew Prince Sihanouk, the country's leader. He then describes how it was to cover the war, and how so many journalists were captured and killed in just a few months.
In the second section, Kurt Volkert describes how a CBS and a NBC television team were captured and killed. And then how in 1992, 22 years later, a U.S. Army special team arrived to look for the missing newsmen. Mr. Volkert raises the question of why the TV journalists were in danger so often, and whether executives in New York were pushing them too much.
I highly recommend this book for the inside story it provides on how newsmen cover war and how dangerous it can be.

Investor's Perspective on IPOs.......2001-03-05
IPOs bring clear advantages to companies--notably, access to capital without having to make future interest payments! And IPOs also bring value to institutional investors in search of new ways to diversify their portfolios. But what advantages do IPOs bring to individual investors, who have only limited investment funds? Why should I, as an investor, buy into a company's IPO, rather than buying into a stock that has already been trading on the market? How can I tell the quality of a particular IPO offering? What brokerage houses are sources for IPO purchases? How do they compare? What about buying into IPOs through mutual funds--how does that differ from a direct IPO purchase? This book answers all these questions in plain English with plenty of solid, current detail.

Description:
Interactions between forest canopy characteristics and plants in the forest understory are important determinants of forest community structure and dynamics. In the highlands of southwestern, China the dwarf bamboo Bashania fangiana Yi is an understory dominant beneath a mixed canopy of the evergreen Abies faxoniana (Rheder & Wilson) and the deciduous Betula utilis (D. Don). The goal of this study was to better understand the role of bamboo dominance, canopy characteristics, and periodic bamboo dieback on forest development. To achieve this goal, we measured tree seedling, tree saplings, and trees, forest canopy characteristics, and bamboo cover in permanent forest (n = 4) and gap plots (n = 31) in a mixed A. faxoniana and B. utilis forest in Sichuan, China. Dwarf bamboos died off in 1983 in the gap plots, and in three of the four forest plots. Forest development was assessed for the period 1984-1996. The seedling bank in forest and gap plots increased after bamboo die-off. A. faxoniana seedlings increased more than B. utilis in forest plots; the opposite pattern characterized gap plots. The proportion of seedlings on raised micro-sites on the forest floor also changed and new seedling were more abundant on the forest floor. By 1996, bamboo seedling cover and biomass had recovered to ca. 45% or their pre-flowering values. Rates of bamboo seedling recovery were faster beneath canopy gaps and deciduous trees than beneath forest or evergreen trees. Tree mortality exceeded recruitment in plots with dense bamboo; the opposite pattern was found in the plot with little bamboo. The mortality rate for B. utilis trees (2.4% year^-^1) was higher than that for A. faxoniana (0.8% year^-^1) and forests with dense bamboos became more open over the census period. Tree mortality was size-dependent and intermediate sized trees had the lowest rates of mortality. Stand basal area increased mainly due to greater basal area gain than loss for A. faxoniana. Interactions between tree species life history, canopy type, and bamboo life-cycles create heterogeneous conditions that influence tree and bamboo regeneration and contribute to the coexistence of A. faxoniana and B. utilis in old-growth forests in southwestern China.

Description:
We analyzed the population structure (size, age, spatial patterns) and radial growth patterns of Abies faxoniana Rehder & Wilson, Picea purpurea Mast., and Betula sp. to investigate the role of dwarf bamboo abundance, gap disturbance, and species life history on the coexistence of canopy dominants in old-growth forests in the Wang Lang Natural Reserve in southwestern China. Four stands were sampled with a single large plot (0.4-0.5ha). There were fewer tree seedlings and saplings in the two plots with a dense bamboo understory, and A. faxoniana seedlings and saplings were much more abundant than those of P. purpurea. Picea purpurea and Betula sp. seedlings established more frequently on raised surfaces than those of A. faxoniana. Seedling density of A. faxoniana, and B. utilis was also higher beneath open than closed canopy conditions in the plots with little bamboo. Young A. faxoniana and Betula sp. trees were clumped at small to intermediate scales (25-900m^2), which are scales of clumping consistent with past regeneration in canopy gaps. Frequent peaks in radial growth releases in the canopy trees in the plots suggest a prevailing regime of small-scale gap disturbances. In each plot, A. faxoniana tree density and basal area was greater than that of P. purpurea. Picea purpurea trees were present in a wide range of age-classes in each plot indicating a pattern of intermittent regeneration in each stand for at least 500 years. In contrast, Abies faxoniana were abundant in age-classes
<250 years, and few A. faxoniana were >350 years old. Betula sp. were mainly
<120 years old. Betula sp. and P. purpurea preferred different seed-beds than A. faxoniana for establishment and regeneration of A. faxoniana, and especially Betula, is associated with gaps. Longevity and high survivorship are key life history traits of P. purpurea that prevent its replacement by A. faxoniana. In Wang Lang, stable coexistence is maintained by differences in species regeneration niche, species demographic characteristics, and species responses to the gap disturbance regime.

Not so inspiring.......2005-07-13
This book had some cute project ideas, but not many that truly inspired me. Many of the projects just didn't tie together into themed rooms. To me, the rooms were not that creative nor ones that I would want to use. This book really wasn't what I was looking for for children's room ideas. If you are just looking to make a few projects (i.e. decorated lamp, storage box, or bulletin board) this book may be what you are looking for. However, if you want to totally redo your child's room another book may provide more inspiration.
The BEST decorating book for kids' rooms.......2003-06-13
I've looked through several different books for decorating kids' rooms and if I could only keep one this would be it. This book shows you how to create a beautiful room for your children by just using paint...painting the walls, ceiling furniture, floor, rug, headboard, shelves, decorating accessories or whatever. I am not an artist or interior decorator but I felt like I could do every project described. Most decorating books just show you a finished room and a few comments about different unique characteristics of the room. This book gives detailed instructions for how to create the entire theme yourself. Some of the themes described are castle, safari adventure, carribbean, fairy tale, circus and many more. Book Description
Maria Rodale, of the family that originated the organic gardening movement in the United States, introduces a beautiful-and practical-journal as an essential companion to her popular Maria Rodale's Organic Gardening. With a similar design, the lush, four-color photographs and illustrations accent the seasonal garden designs and journal pages for gardeners to track their progress, indicate problems and solutions, or simply observe the flora and fauna that surround them in their own thriving organic gardens.

Not Worth $19.95.......2002-06-10
I loved the idea of having a workbook to go along with the main book (Maria Rodale's Organic Gardening Companion), but honestly, it was not worth the $19.95 I spent on it. It is only a workbook. If this book was under $10, it would have been a better value.
Maria Rodale's Organic Gardenig Companion.......2000-09-20
The Rodale family started the organic gardening movement in the US and if you are interested in growing your own food and flowers without the use of non-organic pesticides or other chemicals, you probably own some of the books that the members of the Rodale family have written. This book is a companion (as the title says)to Maria Rodale's Organic Gardening and I would suggest that you read that book too (or first!). Like all of the Rodale books, this one is beautifully illustrated. One picture of a thriving, healthy plant should convince anyone --even those sceptical about organic gardening -- that these methods produce superior plants. One drawback of these books is that they are not written for the sceptical, but for those already convinced of the virtues of organic gardening. It may be hard for someone used to using chemicals on his or her plants to become comfortable with the concept, but experienced gardeners (both organic and non-organic) will see that the method of organic gardening takes no more time than any other way and has the benefit of being cheaper, too. If you are just thinking of starting to garden organically, you may want to begin with another Rodale book. But if you are already converted to organic gardening, you will want to own this book to add it to your collection.

Maria Rodale, who comes to organic gardening naturally--her father and grandfather, who founded Rodale Press, were famously passionate organic gardeners--felt for many years that while there was plenty of good information about organic gardening, there was neither an existing primer that taught all the very basics nor a book that showed that organic gardening can be a beautiful, sophisticated way to plant. ("Admit it, you thought that if you were an organic gardener, you needed to have black plastic mulches and aluminum pie plates to scare the birds and rabbits, didn't you?") So she wrote this one, which, from the discussion of planning your garden on graph paper and the tips on digging up grass to the recipes for using the fall harvest, is utterly, seductively beautiful.
The seasonal organization of the book does sometimes seem almost incidental, save for the calendar pages that show what to plant and what tasks to do during each month. But the discussion of seeds--the various types, where to get them, how to start them indoors--plus Nana's kugel recipe will keep new organic gardeners from chafing at the bit during the winter, and the interviews with numerous long-time organic gardeners make great reading throughout the year. Rodale shows great sense in deciding what's important to new gardeners and those just deciding to go organic. Pests, both animal and plant, are the great fear of potential organic gardeners, and many pages in the book are devoted to weeding effectively, beating the bugs, and gently monitoring the animal population (getting a dog or cat is one good, low-effort solution to keeping a number of destructive small mammals out of the root systems). Rodale's excellent photographs--of her children, her garden, the Rodale Institute farm--appear on almost every page of this artfully designed book. It's a joy to read, and will inspire many a fresh organic tomato. --Barrie Trinkle

Bleeding Heart Liberal's Favorite Gardening Book.......2002-02-16
The beautiful photograph on the front cover showing my favorite flower, the Bleeding Heart, virtually guaranteed that I'd be taking this home with me. I was not disappointed! This is my favorite gardening book of a pretty extensive collection. It is large and so filled with gorgeous photographs that it almost qualifies as a "coffee table book" except for the fact that it is also chock full of very smart and useful information about organic gardening plus well written inspirational tid-bits from Maria Rodale's personal gardening life history. It is divided up into seasonal sections and is a very effective spring fever reliever. I love to dream over the photographs and gardening suggestions when everything is dormant under a blanket of snow. Maria writes as though she is talking to a friend, sharing charming anecdotes, her favorite tools, cherished recipes. Her garden is a lovely, inviting place where the whole ecosystem is respected including the so-called "pests." Do you want to know what to feed a hummingbird? Maria tells you. How about ten ways to eat a tomato? Yum. Maria's there for you. As she says, "Life takes creative thinking. Practice in your garden." I find that after a few minutes with this book my own creativity blossoms. The genuine passionate love for gardening and the green world that is between these pages when combined with all the useful practical ideas and philosophical encouragement makes for a real treat.
beautiful,imformative,easy read,clear instructions.......1999-08-04
The Maria Rodale's Organic Gardening:Your Seasonal Companion to Creating a Beautiful and Delicioius Garden is breathtakingly beautiful. Organized by seasons, bursting with information, techniques for gardening and with a bonus of old family recipies, it is a book that will be referred to often. Maria's conversonational form of writing makes the book fun and easy to read. $24.50 is a very reasonable price for so much knowledge.
An amazing and well written book!.......1999-04-17
As a budding organic gardener this was an excellent book that not only kindled my interest in the subject but was also incredibly educational. They layout of the book by seasons makes for a fun read. Ms. Rodale gives excellent tips (and great recipes!) for each season. The interviews are fun to read, and include some very interesting personalities.
If you are an organic gardener, buy this book! If you are not, buy this book anyway, it may turn you into one.
My only complaint (and it's not aimed at this book in particular) is that most authors of gardening books forget about those of us in the dreaded near-arctic zones. Short growing seasons and long winters can be a pain! :)

If you don't know this much already, you're either a virgin or a complete idiot..........2006-10-22
This book just says a lot of banalities in the long-winded "out of bed" chapters (e.g. be compassionate to women), and nothing new in the highly anticipated "in bed" chapters (e.g. women like cuddling). Only buy this if you are struggling to find something other than missionary style, or can't figure out how to compliment a woman.
Finally a book that's informing me enough to let me drop a lot of fear and anxiety.......2005-06-22
I'm 22 and have never had a girlfriend. Part of that is simply not being around a lot of people (especially girls) my age (homeschooled untill college). So not only was i introverted and socially not developed, but i had zero experience with only the insight of my sister to help me along some. Now i've met someone who i truly adore but i didn't know what to do and was scared. I was scared to touch her, i didnt know how to compliment her at all, and i had trouble conversing with her. A lot of that has passed with time and patience on her part through our friendship and a lot of self examination on mine. She knows i like her and i think that part of the reason she's not quite there yet is the way i suck at communicating what i need to. I almost put this book back on the shelf after thinking it was going to be all about trying to score, but it isn't. It's about breaking down walls of confusion, frustration, miscommunication, and fear. I am about half-way through this book and so far it's been very helpful with basic communications rules of thumb, as well as helping me understand her a bit better. It's also helping me to begin to touch her more in pretty casual ways. She is different in some aspects emotionally from other girls and actually has some generally male emotional tendencies, and i realised that i had some generally female emotional tendencies. She will express anger which i admire, but i will get sad for getting angry and i have trouble releasing it. You wouldnt think someone (me) who consistently played sports for more than a decade would be that way! I also realised that i did not hug and embrace like close girlfriends do to each other because guys don't really do that, and that i'm not messed up or abnormal for feeling a little neglected when girls don't hug me (no i'm not an obese troll, i've been told by multiple girls that i am attractive). I've also always been piss poor at complimenting women because i was always afraid of them thinking i was trying to get some when i just wanted to compliment them and admire their beauty. This is helping me move past that, and helping me convey how i appreciate her. With any luck this book will have helped me finally get a truly wonderful young woman.
Pretty good.......2003-10-22
Any book that honestly attempts to bridge the desires and expectations of men and women is a good thing in my opinion.
Most of Daylle Schwartz's book deals with pleasing women "out of bed," which I think is for the best. Towards the end, she transfers the common sense suggestions she's made for listening to attending to the needs of women to the realm of the bedroom.
Basically what it comes down to is that to be a decent lover, a man shouldn't be wanting to learn bedroom tricks, but rather should be willing to be a friend to the all of the woman that he loves.
It's not the most comprehensive or perfect book, but I think there's plenty of information and ideas about what women want that any man can benefit from.
What Ms Schwartz can and can not help you with........2001-10-26
Though Daylle is ill qualified to instruct anyone in matters of enduring love, she is an undisputed expert in matters of lust. If your relationship is lacking in the `vitamins and minerals' of a healthy lifelong relationship, look elsewhere. But if you're in a solid marriage and want to help your wife learn how to enjoy `dessert' (before someone else does), look no further. The heart of what Ms. Schwartz shares in this book is two-fold and true to the title she gave it. She does a masterful job of showing men how women wish to be treated non-sexually and then goes where few have gone in spelling out the nuts and bolts of how to help your women enjoy her sexuality in the same way you do. What's the difference? You've been orgasmic since puberty and your wife want's to start soon. Wise is the man who not only learns what Daylle is teaching in this book, but learns it in the order that she teaches it.
A must read!.......2000-08-25
If I'd had this book a few years ago, I'd still be married to the woman I love. When I read Daylle's practical words, I saw all the things I did wrong flash before me in neon lights. Back then I was so busy trying to avoid dealing with problems that I ignored the simple things that could have kept my marriage solid. I see all the things my wife complained about in a new light. Now I understand what she needed. She talked and talked and I heard it in another language. Now I get it. I thought my wife was asking for too much. Had I read this book sooner, I could have pleased her without so much work. I wish I'd had the connection ideas cause that was what she was asking for when I made fun of her for wanting too much attention. If I'd understood her body then, I could have kept her much happier in bed. Instead I was one of those guys Daylle refers to who just mush around and hope for the best. I thought satisfying her was impossible so I didn't bother to try other ways. I've tried some of the in bed techniques on the woman I'm seeing and I felt like a more confident lover. She really responded. This book explains how many women think and how we often interpret women incorrectly. I hope that someday I'll meet a woman like my wife that I'll want to use everything I've learned on. This book can definitely make a difference in how you see and handle women. Should be required reading before you get too involved.

Book Description
Franz Schulze's acclaimed biography is a captivating story of the life, designs, and ideas that made Mies van der Rohe one of the world's most celebrated modern architects.
"The most comprehensive book ever written about the master designer and, by any measure, the best....This is a genuinely readable book....Because no writer has ever before probed into Mies's life at such depth, we have here the first definitive reconstruction of the architect's personal habits, loves, fears, triumphs, loneliness and (in his old age) agonies."—Paul Gapp, Chicago Tribune
"A herculean, generally successful effort to present Mies's work in terms of both character and context....The substance is impressive and much of the material is fresh and revealing....This book has obviously been a long labor of love and respect for which no source has been left untouched."—Ada Louise Huxtable, New York Times Book Review
"Schulze's excellent book...is absolutely worthy of its subject. Soundly researched, vividly detailed, and hard to fault critically, it is the most complete survey ever written of Mies'[s] life and works....No one else has approached Schulze's achievement in telling the whole story over eight decades."—Allan Temko, San Francisco Chronicle Review
"Schulze has both the gift of an architectural historian able to render Mies's building innovations and that of a biographer able to paint the humanity and shortcomings of the man."—Jane Holtz Kay, Christian Science Monitor
"By its broad scope, its eloquent style, and, above all, its prodigious scholarship, this book clearly establishes itself as an indispensable volume for the library of the serious Mies scholar."—Louis Rocah, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians
"In Schulze's hands Mies is no longer the impassive monolith he has sometimes seemed to be, but a complex human being whose varying moods reflected and affected the vicissitudes of his life and work....Yet, in this model architectural biography, [Schulze] also knows and brilliantly demonstrates the integral nexus of architecture and life."—Thomas S. Hines, Progressive Architecture
"Franz Schulze's Mies van der Rohe: A Critical Biography captivates from the very first paragraph....The writer is a skillful storyteller. In his hands, Mies's life acquires the intensity and dramatic progression of a novel."—Juan Pablo Bonta, Design Book Review
"A revelation....The man who emerges from its pages is not cold and rational but exuberant and illogical."—Donald Davis, Newsweek
"[A] readable, well-researched and sympathetic biography."—Mark Girouard, Washington Post Book World
"The standard life of Mies for some time to come."—William H. Jordy, The New Criterion

"[A] magnificent biography."—Diana Ketcham, The Oakland Tribune

An excellent biography that really understands the man.......2005-12-10
This is a biography and a very complete one at that. It is not strong on illustrations, drawings, or theory but it is the best book at understanding Mies as a person and in his private life. If you are interested in his work more so another excellent book is David Speath's Mies Van Der Rohe the two of these books together will give an understanding of of mies the man and his work, which to really understand both are nessisary. This book is about the man who reminded us that the simplest solution is the stongest solution.
My Personal Review and Plea for a Reprint of this Gem.......2000-02-14
As a fan of modernism and a resident in a Mies Van Der Rohe-designed Commonwealth Plaza building in Chicago, I have an acute appreciation for Mies' vision and mastery of form and function in architecture. I borrowed this book from a friend and was mesmerized by the depth in which Mr. Schulze chronicled some of Mies' best works. I received incredible insight into the philosophy of this master architect. The text was accompanied by black and white photos of the buildings and designs and was perfectly matched. The black and white layout of the book focuses the reader on the form of these buildings and its importance, thereby giving a glimpse of the thoughts behind the designs. The book is incredibly comprehensive and a must for anyone with an interest in architecture and modernism. Unfortunately, the book is not in print and I have been constantly searching for my own copy, preferably new. I hope that the University of Chicago Press, itself part of a highly-regarded academic institution, to quickly offer a reprint of this valuable book. I would love to obtain a hardcopy version, as I strongly feel that this is a collection-quality book.
A thorough look at the mysterious Mies Van der Rohe.......1999-09-26
While much is known about the works or Mies van der Rohe, little is ever revealed about the man himself. After reading Franz Schulze's book I found myself reflecting quite deeply on my own direction in the great field of Architecture.
Schulze gives readers a honest perspective on the mysterious personality of Mies. He tells much about his marital life, his relationship with his daughters, and his political life; three aspects of the man which had significant influence on his career.
In the end Mies is painted as one who did what was necessary to become great, but never lost sight of the true essence of arguably the most influential of all art forms.
Schulze appears to have a deep respect for Mies and is therefore very frank in this book. However, he is not merely spouting rhetoric. Much of the biography is based on interviews with those close to Mies, including his grandson, Dirk Lohan, who himself is a successful architect in the Chicago area.
