Authoritative but not an easy read.......2004-06-07

This is an authoritative text (it's on the recommended reading list for the CMA, for example). Unfortunately, the style of writing is not the clearest. Although I'm a straight-A student of accounting, I had to re-read way too many sentences.

This book was over done ? this book will confuse an accounting student. In fact, they recommend that you purchase a study guide to go along with this book (what does that tell you!!!). Along with a poor accounting lecture you are doomed to barely pass an accounting class with this book. The write up and description of general concepts ? extends to some far out, drawn out, and exacerbated lecture that may have been written by satanic worshipers or something like that. I bought the study guide to go along with this book after I did so poorly on my first exam and now I know why a few did well on their exam?s ? because they bought the study guide!!! The study guide should be used as the main study concept and leave this heavy weighted book on the shelf?

The author should have made this text more student friendly. It was very confusing at times. This book is not worth its cost!

This book is so fun to read! I love the way Brenda gave clothes different personalities. And yes, clothes are meant to serve you & bring out your best! Every woman can look beautiful!

The best book on developing your style that I've come across. It is a style essential. The information and techniques presented are novel, and road-tested by the author in her stylist business. Brenda has a warm & supportive personality, and her book is one you'll reach for again & again. Get this book to find your style, and to re-invent your look as your tastes evolve. Other books focus on creating interchangeable "capsules" (honestly, those books are a bit dated now) but Brenda is concerned with whether you are YOU in your clothes. If you want to copy a magazine spread of "5 Fall Wardrobe Pieces" then buy a magazine and purchase all the clothes. Don't talk to me (or Brenda) if you wear them with a frown 'cos they're not you. If you want to look like yourself: a unique, dynamic person, then get this book and follow through.

I loved this book. I really found it so helpful in helping me to define my own individual style. Now I'm really happy with my wardrobe and actually (shock, horror!) enjoy shopping! This wonderful book also inspired me to redecorate my house and find my own decorating style. It is really helpful, written in a very humorous, loving manner and is very supportive. I have been so inspired I am even considering studying fashion and design at college. It is an inspiring book with lots of really great "hands on" helpful tips and advice and very creative activities!!!

Not for Europeans.......2004-01-14

Actually this book made me feel rather good, not because it revolutionised my attitude towards my own wardrobe (it didn't), but because it showed me that basically I already do things right, like wearing clothes in my proper size. Call me a "Eurosnoot", but this and most of the other problems and inhibitions mentioned in the book struck me as somehow rather "American" - I for one can't think of any European woman friend of mine identifying with them, except maybe the wardrobe full of things one never wears.
I had expected a style/colour sort of guide, what I got was more of a self help book for absolute beginners without the slightest clue, featuring a lot of time-consuming therapeutical activities - definitely not what I wanted.
To all those who feel the same way, I recommend "Color me beautiful" by Carole Jackson, by now almost a classic, plus Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine's "What not to wear" (book and/or DVD) and, newly discovered and very refreshing, Kim France and Andrea Linett's "Lucky shopping manual" - there I found just the sort of practical advice I was looking for.

Amazing!.......2003-11-01

I loved this book. I thought that I had a pretty good handle on my wardrobe, but this books helped me really fine tune my style and learn that I deserve clothes that make me look and feel great!

The author makes herself your friend and she is a good one to have on your side! The auther recommend many helpful activities that I found very enlightening.

Healthy Parenting.......2003-10-18

This book is the most helpful parenting book I have ever read! It speaks to the unique issues of ACOAs while being applicable to parenting situations of all sorts. It really gave me a sense of what I have to be responsible for if I want to be a successful parent. The message given by this book is that the time for feeling sorry for oneself and for excuses is over, and that it is time to make things better with one's own children. The practical advice and examples gives the reader something to use to meet this end. I think that this book would be helpful to all parents - not just ACOAs.

More empathy, please.......2002-05-29

This book has been helpful for me in turning around a lot of the unhealthy parenting patterns I learned from my dysfunctional parents. But I also was annoyed at times by what seemed to me to be a scolding, moralizing tone. Also, I felt the author should have shown a bit more empathy for her audience (as she does in her other books on alcoholic families). I finished the book with a bubbling rage toward my parents. Why did they get -- and exercise -- the option to fail their kids, while I am stuck having to work extra-hard to parent differently? Why do they get let off the hook so easily, yet I remain accountable? I've been stuck with this anger ever since my 4-year-old daughter was born, and even therapy hasn't thoroughly eliminated it. I do think Woititz owes us -- the true heroes in the struggle to break the chain of abuse -- a bit more validation and empathy than she shared in this book.

A great book about parenting that everyone can use........2002-02-10

This is a great book for people who have grown up in troubled families. It offers great advice and great insights on topics such as setting limits, boundaries, and a host of other parental problems. I use it with all of my clients and in my workshops and parent groups. Nicely written book

Informative but not quite there........2000-08-18

Was helpful in realizng the actions of parents to their children, but I found other books more helpful overall such as, Toxic Parents overcoming their hurtful legacy and reclaiming your life, by Dr. Susan Forward. Not only helping the child, but focusing on the parent and how to correct their own lives.

Excellent! A Must-Read for ANY Parent!.......1998-12-01

The thing that I loved the most about this book was the way it clearly defined the fine lines between "Healthy and Unhealthy Parenting".

I learned that many of the ways in which I had been treated as a child were unfair, although I did not know it then.

My mother had no right to throw her adult temper tantrums around me, emotionally pounding me for the choices that she made in her life. At the time, I accepted full blame for her misery, and because of her hot and cold mood swings, learned at an early age what it felt like to be confused and depressed. My sister and I tiptoed around our mother, wondering if she was in a good mood, or in a bad one. If bad, we knew to avoid her and stay out of her way.

We learned early on to live underneath a shroud of denial, about our alcholic father and our verbally abusive grandmother, who we lived with.

Our mother would badmouth them to us, revealing innappropriate secrets so she could let off steam, then expected us to supress our own feelings. We were never allowed to vent or acknowledge that we were unhappy about our invisible father and overbearing grandmother.

My mother enjoyed using subtle psychological abuse. It left no physical scars, but was just as damaging. You were more likely to blame yourself than admit your mother caused your pain. Because my mother was not a big physical abuser, only having spanked us on rare occasions, we thought we had it pretty good, and had no right to complain.

As a young adult in my early twenties I became stepmother to a daughter who was diagnosed as having Attention Deficit Disorder, a difficult behavior problem which requires much tolerance and understanding on the part of the parent.

Needless to say, I had trouble. I wasn't sure about what I had a right to expect and what I didn't have a right to expect from this child. We had endless power struggles because she had her own head problems brought on by her drug addict mother who abandoned her, and kept showing back up only to keep disappearing out of her life.

When I read this book, it made me only too aware that I was falling into the sinkholes of my past, in ways being much like my mother. I realized to my horror that I subconsciously set my daughter up at times to fail, so I could enjoy berating her. I never would have known had I not read the book. The book showed me in undeniable ways what was acceptable and what was unacceptable forms of parenting.

In every chapter I found something I could apply to my past. What a great relief it is to find out that all along, you didn't do anything wrong, after all. You can finally dump that huge weight of guilt, because it never belonged to you to begin with. And furthermore, nobody had a right to lay it all on you. How free, and light you feel after reading it.

My stepdaughter is not guilt free, it would have taken a strong individual to deal with what I coped with, but I wish I had this book from the beginning. Things would have been a lot less stressful, and much easier to understand.

I loved this book so much that it had inspired me to begin writing a book of my own, an autobiography about my life and what it was like to grow up with hostility, denial, and guilt. I am presently working on it and hope to publish it one day soon.

The book reads like a Hopper painting.......2007-08-29

Do not be intimidated by this book's length. I am not an art buff, but have become interested in Hopper and plan to attend the upcoming exhibition of his work at the National Gallery of Art in DC this Fall.
I approached this book with trepidation, but found myself drawn into it. I read it compulsively to the finish. There is tremendous detail presented in a simple austere style. It tries to make Hopper's life speak for itself. Thus, the book is a work of art about it's subject--a Hopper.
My only caveat is that you must also have a separate copy of Hopper's works (or at least many of them) to consult. Surprisingly and I think mistakenly, the book does not include copes of the many of the paintings. However, if you are familiar with his work, this is no impediment.

Great audio book, but be sure to purchase parts one AND two........2005-12-01

When I got this book, I was elated. I'm a huge Hopper fan and also own Gail Levin's Catalog Raisonne of Edward Hopper's work. The book is incredibly insightful into Hopper's personality and goes into detail about his education, life with Jo, and seemingly each painting's creation.

But make certain that when purchasing this book (especially used) that you are getting parts I and II. There are supposed to be a total of 18 cassettes... I unfortunately had to buy parts one (10 cassettes) and two (8 cassettes) seperately at greater expense.

Two Comedians In Love - Edward and Josephine Hopper.......2002-12-29

Gail Levin's book -Edward Hopper: an Intimate Biography- is about the life of a famous artist, Edward Hopper, as well as that of an obscure artist, Josephine Hopper (the former Josephine Nivison). Mrs. Hopper's detailed diaries, kept up faithfully for decades, are a major source of information for Levin's book. Since this necessarily puts the perspective of the book heavily on Jo's side of the story, no one should consider this one-stop shopping for finding out what made Edward Hopper tick. The Hoppers were a two completely opposite personalities who both complemented and aggravated each other. What I most like about Levin's book is that probably no one else has ever been in Jo Hopper's corner before Levin. Jo usually comes off as the stereotypical shrewish wife who dominated her poor henpecked husband. What a different picture is presented in this book! Instead, their marriage was much more complex, and the love/hate dynamics never seem to have leveled off during the many years they were together. Their story defies my own stereotypcial notion that as people grow old, their emotions level off and they are like two old bookends. Not with these two! I also enjoyed finding out that Edward Hopper was a Bette Davis fan, that he liked Jo to wear her hair down, that Jo's idea of cooking was opening up cans, and that Hopper had to haul buckets of coal up from the basement to feed the coal stove that heated their studio/living quarters. Much of these intimate details are provided courtesy of Jo's diaries, which served as an outlet and a refuge from her stolid husband. Perhaps best of all is the theatricality and eroticism suggested by Jo's descriptions of how they worked together as she posed for many of his paintings. In one of Edward Hopper's last paintings, Two Comedians, he portrays two shy actors taking a little bow: a loving tribute to their long and histrionic collaboration together, in life and in art.

An interesting glimpse into the life of an American artist........2001-01-04

Gail Levin's biography is a thorough review of Edward Hopper's life and work, spanning his early childhood, his struggles as an artist paying the bills by illustrating for magazines, his success, and his consistently remarkable artistic output. The surprise for me came from the revelation that his wife Jo, usually a marginal and minor figure, was a remarkable woman and an artist herself. Although one is tempted to wonder how her career would have gone if she hadn't married Hopper, Levin avoids sensationalistic speculation and, aside from occasional comments, sticks strictly to the facts.

Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography.......2000-10-30

While the book was interesting it was also redundant of some of Ms. Levin's other works. Unfortunately, I believe she got at least one fact messed up, which, of course is curious, and, makes one wonder if anyone is doing any editing out there. At 45 bucks a pop, you'd think someone would be doing some fact checking. I believe I'm correct in pointing out that Christian Hopper was Edward Hopper's grandfather, not great-grandfather as she so states. His father was Garrett Henry Hopper. His father was Christian Hopper. Christian Hopper married Charity Blauvelt, and together they had Garrett Henry Hopper, who, together with Elizabeth Smith Hopper, had Edward Hopper. I thought some of the events like Jo's trying to get the car out of the garage were a riot, not to mention hearing about her cat, Arthur. Unfortunately, Arthur disappears about midway. Leaves you wondering if she named him after Chester A. Arthur, Arthur Godfrey, etc. He had an odd sense of humor, but he was Dutch and you know how they are. Not too abnormal, tho. Your typical stingy, grumpy man who hasn't a clue about women. Other than that, it was a good read.
