Book Description
Despite the fact that Sir John Franklin's name is in the forefront of the surging interest in polar exploration, this is the first full biography written in twenty years about the British adventurer who disappeared with his men in the Arctic in 1845. This book examines Franklin's incident-filled and sometimes contentious career as an explorer, including theories old and new regarding his final Northwest Passage expedition, and questions about his first overland expedition, where many of his men died from the cold and starvation. In addition, the author recounts Franklin's naval career that included service with Nelson at Copenhagen and Trafalgar and joining the great navigator Matthew Flinders on the first circumnavigation of Australia. Nor is Franklin's stormy service as governor of Tasmania overlooked. Complimenting the epic side of his life as an explorer is a portrait of his personal life, based on the rich correspondence and diaries of his two wives, including efforts to pressure the Navy to find the missing husband. The engrossing work is sure to be enjoyed by all exploration enthusiasts.

Customer Reviews:
Useless if you're searching for the "why".......2006-12-13
This very thick book is full of detailed research, and chock full of studies, but completely devoid of answers to questions about why one submits to eating disorders. I bought it trying to gain some personal insight as to why I felt ruled by this behavior, and after reading this tome, am still in the dark. If you want to do a research paper and site studies, this book is for you, but if you want some insight as to what makes someone give into the compulsive/addictive behavior, definitely look elsewhere.
I gave it two stars because I didn't know how else to rate it. It was completely not what I thought it was.
excellent resource.......2006-01-11
As a student in the behavioral studies curriculum, this book has given me a tremendous amount of valuable information and insight into the field of eating disorders. It is very clear and reader-friendly!
excellent book.......2005-06-11
This is an excellent book for those who have no starting knowledge about eating disorders and professionals who are well aquainted in working with them. This comprehensive text gives insights into a variety of arenas all important in the detection, recovery, and prevention of eating disorders.
Excellent-Thoughtful-Useful.......2004-03-08
As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who works with eating disorders I found this book very helpful, it initiated into much of the important subject matter to be reflected on in treating these illnesses; and has since served as a useful guide worth rereading and reflecting on time and time again. I saw Carolyn speak at an eating disorders conference a year ago and her strong clinical background, her personal experience, her creativity and compassion come through as clearly in this book as they did in listening to her. I highly recommend it.
highly recommended.......2000-02-10
This is an excellent source for those who already have some knowledge of eating disorders and want a more in depth look at the behaviors and histories often associated with them. For those who are new to the subject, I recommend Mary Pipher's book Hunger Pains.

LOW-FAT GOOD FOOD.......2007-02-08
Love the book- bought 8 more similar titles. Replaced all the cholesterol-laden, fat-dripping, high calorie cookbooks I used for years. Great CookBook. Easy - Tasty - Healthy, oh my! GOOD RECIPES.
Pleased.......2006-08-08
This book has such a nice variety of lowfat recipes... with soups, salads, sauces, side dishes and an emphasis on main course recipes. Good flavor and lowered calories... Worthwhile.
excellent low fat cookbook.......2003-07-15
I bought this cookbook a number of years ago, and I can honestly say that it changed the way I think about cooking. For example: before this cookbook, my primary seasonings were salt, butter, and minced onion; thanks to this cookbook, I've reduced my salt usage by at least a factor of 3, and I've learned how to get more "bang for the buck" on the salt I do use with other herbs and spices. I was greatly reassured by the writers' assurance that they understand the principle that if it doesn't taste good, you won't eat it - the recipes reflect this understanding, as the need to reduce fat is balanced with the need for appropriate taste and texture in the final product. Recipes such as Hungarian Cabbage and Royal Indian Salmon have become staples in our household. I highly recommend this book.
Great tasting, healthy recipes which are easy to prepare........1997-04-03
Cooking is my hobby and I have had this book for over a year now and have used it many times. The recipes are very tasty, I've used many of them over and over. The low fat chocolate cheesecake is wonderful, as is the potato-cheese soup. In addition, the book starts off with a chapter on nutrition and a chapter on kitchen utensils and spices - I think both chapters would be very helpful to the novice and the experienced cook (consider myself experienced). I am now ordering this book for a friend of mine, in the past have given it to my mother, brother and mother-in- law. If I could have only one low-fat cookbook, this one would be it. I strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in really yummy low-fat cooking

Customer Reviews:
I'm Delighted With Delight.......2007-09-06
Delight in Your Child's Design is a book I wish I'd had when I was raising young children and teaching school. Laurie Winslow Sargent reminds parents that our kids aren't us and that as parents we need to delight in who God created them to be. She uses a friendly style and numerous stories to show parents how to discover what makes their children tick. The book includes a variety of charts, quizzes and inventories that help parents zero in on their children's specific personalities. And she doesn't ignore disabilities that make life challenging for parents and kids. Instead Laurie shows how disabilities are part of God's design and provides resources that can help parents deal with a child's special needs.
delight in your child's design.......2007-09-02
I love this book!
I have bought many books on personality differences among children ( I have three children) but have never completed a book. They always start out interesting and full of useful information but after a while they either repeat themselve or get so detailed that I lose interest. I like this book because it's short and to the point. You can tell that Sargent is a busy mom of three and understands the urgency of needing answers without having to devote a month of reading and research.
Another aspect that I appreciate about this book is it gives you ideas on how to fix yourself not your child. As a former first grade teacher I always said if I'm having a bad day it's not my class it's me. If I could change my attitude the dynamic of the whole class would change. I see this with Sargent's book. Face it it's alot easier to change yourself than someone else!
A Joyful Parenting Book.......2006-07-14
The demands and pace of life can make parenting challenging. Through personal anecdotes, Sargent encourages families to identify personality differences, focus on the positive and show appreciation for each other. Delight in Your Child's Design reveals how simple ideas--presented with a loving and joyful attitude--can motivate children and make parenting more meaningful.
waste of money.......2006-03-01
I bought this for a parent group I am involved in and I can barely bring myself to finish it!!! The book has not told me anything I didn't already know. While being reminded of things one already knows can be helpful, this book also fails to be an inspirational reminder.
A Book Every Parent Should Read!.......2005-12-27
This book enlightened my outlook. I often wondered why my kids acted the way they did! Laurie Winslow Sargent shares personal stories of her children throughout her book that lets her book touch the heart of the reader. And she show me that I am not alone - other parents have some of the same issues. It is not a lecture book, it is an inspiring, motivating parent resource guide. I reference my copy often. Once you read it, you as a parent will have a new appreciation for each of your children.
This is a must have book! It is awesome....and very well written. Thank you Laurie for your book!

The worst U2 book ever........2003-09-08
This book is a farce. Great photographs, but multiple glaring errors in the text made me question the validity of this volume. I would have given this a zero rating if it existed - check out Until The End Of The World, a much better book about the Zoo TV and Zooropa tours, or the more recent U2 Reader for a more well-rounded view of this seminal band.
Through the storm we reach the shore. . ........2000-05-16
This book is a must have for every U2 fan! It has detailed revelations into the bands beginings, and has full color pictures to compliment the driven narative! Even if you aren't a U2 fan, buy this book and you will be. Peace

Aimed at the begginer and the simple minded.......1999-10-24
Gard describes in simple words basic principles of stock evaluation and stock picking. Aimed mainly at the begginer investor and the investor that wants to get into the market, but not give up his day job in the process (i.e. how to limit your research time to the bare essentials not requiring an MBA, yet do it intellegntly). Gard also adds many stories, some from personal experience, to help the reader in grasping the "feel" for stock valuation. A bit too simplistic for my taste. All in all a good book, well written.

Customer Reviews:
Good book on Evil.......2004-11-11
Well written: clear, non-pedantic, and interesting. The idea is that we have certain rational prohibitions to avoid unnecessary harm to ourselves and that this forms the basis of morality. Berumen says there is no rational requirement to be moral towards others; this comes from joining impartiality with our own rational prohibitions, which requires we extend it to everyone else who can suffer or die, with some proportinate formula for other animals. He comes up with a short list of general maxims...don't kill, cause pain, disable, lie, steal, or violate specified duties/obligations. These are not absolute, however, for we can always come up with a case where an exception would be the right thing to do. We can justify such exceptions by applying a Kantian universal, making it apply all of the time to all such situations. Unlike Kant, Berumen will take specific facts and consequencs into account. He then shows how capitalism, or more specifically, private property and free exchange, are allowed by morality, and why collectivism is morally problematic. Less interesting stuff on business (to me) follows, though I am sure it would be valuable to people interested in the practical business side. The exception (to me) are the chapters on business duties towards animals and the environment. One of the better books on ethics, and the first I have read that really takes a hard look at the concepts underlying socialism and capitalism from an ethical standpoint
A Remarkable Synthesis.......2004-08-04
One of the few modern philsophy books with practical value...how to live one's life...and theoretical rigour from a philosophical perspective. This is a masterful synthesis of analytical philsophy, normative ethics, economics and business. I highly recommend this to serious students of any of these disciplines. Berumen begins by showing how ethical propositions have meaning and how logic applies to them; he then shows that the folly of moral relativism; and then he comes up with a set of moral principles based on our rational prohibitions and the concept of impartiality, which he contends represent the only universal moral rules possible. Berumen defines evil as the suffering of those who can suffer, whether human or other animals, and he says the basis of universal morality is to avoid causing others to suffer, that which all rational creatures would avoid for themselves without an overriding reason. Berumen then goes on to show how capitalism is more justifiable than socialism from an ethical perspective, primarily on the basis of rules against taking another's property or restricting his freedom to trade or produce. However, Berumen argues that these are not absolute rights...and that one can violate a moral precept when the facts and logic enable one to prescribe a universal exception to the circumstance, such that all rational people would prescribe the same thing given the same facts. Finally, he takes up various business issues such as corporate governance, the environment, selling, and fiduciary responsibility. His comments on the treatment of animals and our duties towards them are among the best I have encountered.
Philsophy Made Understandable.......2003-10-24
Do No Evil is written clearly and logically. A lot of philsophy is either too ethereal or too technical. Berumen starts by laying out the nature of ethics, then proceeds to show what we can and cannot justify as universal princples, and applies these ideas to economics and business. Along the way he shows that capitalism is by default the most moral system, but not something whose princples are invioble, for certain macro moral rules have precedence. Longish, but very good.
Do No Harm.......2003-10-11
Like the physician's oath, the author says the most important moral principle is to do no harm, at least, not without being able to will that what we undertake becomes a universal law covering all the same circumstances. This is an excellent book, especially when it comes to making complicated ideas easy-or easier-to understand. I really liked the section on fiduciary responsibility. The writing is clear and the subject is timely.
Good Works.......2003-08-09
One of the most important points the author makes is that the evil done by an individual or business (the death and suffering it causes) is generally more important than the good works that it performs, that is, unless we can make a specific exception to the rule against causing harm a universal prescription. Thus, a polluter despoiling the environment is not relieved of his moral responsibilities because he donates to other environmental causes.

Customer Reviews:
Save your money.......2007-05-21
This is an essentially pointless and unhelpful "guide." Anyone who can construct a decent sentence will already know everything that is in this book - it's common sense. Furthermore, the book is drastically overpriced based on the page count, and worse yet, the nonexistent information therein. Do a Google Search on press releases and everything contained in this book - and more - will be instantly at your fingertips, for free. I wish I would have had the benefit of customer reviews before I wasted money this woefully inadequate, nearly criminally worthless guide. Take my advice (as well as that of the other reviewers) and keep this out of your Amazon cart.
Slim, unhelpful guide.......2007-01-30
Small guide seemingly written in the 1950s rather than 2004. For example, does anyone need a book that lists state abbreviations? Common sense advice runs along the lines of "be clear and concise" and "include yor name and phone number..."
