Book Description
This is a book about shareholders -- who they are, what they own, how their composition and character has changed, and with it their relationship with the companies they own. It is also a book about shareholder rights and responsibilities. In a clear and readable style the book explores the key current corporate governance issues -- company law and reporting, chief executive pay, regulatory and accountability requirements -- against the background of an ever-changing business environment: an environment in which private investors may have grown in number, but in which shareholders influence has dwindled as institutions have become the dominant shareholding group. Throughout the book the authors provide numerous examples and anecdotes illustrating the evolution of the joint stock company from the South Sea Company of the 18th century to the giants and cause celebres on the corporate stage in the 1980s and 1990s. Both authors are authoritative and informed commentators on issues of corporate governance with extensive management, policy and advocacy experience; their underlying concern is to show the importance of shareholder interest and involvement, which they strongly believe will remain in the best interests of the company and the wider society in the 21st century.

Important in moving shareholders from speculators to owners........1999-10-09
Much has been written about the role of directors and boards but far too little on the how shareholders can add value. Carolyn Kay Brancato did so in her excellent book, "Institutional Investors and Corporate Governance." However, Brancato was primarily writing from the perspective of managers. Although there was general recognition that shareholders can add value, the thrust of the book was on what managers need to know about shareholders and how to attract shareholders who will support them. Charkham and Simpson take a larger societal viewpoint. At bottom, they are concerned not with what is best for managers but what system will best provide the goods and services that society needs.
The authors provide a short history of the corporation, from the Bubble Act of 1720, which circumscribed the use of charters, through general enabling laws and subsequent limited liability acts. They discuss the legal framework of directors, the voluntary Cadbury Code, the growth of activist investors such as LENS, UK Active Value Fund and end with a discussion of needed reforms.
A four year study of British proxy voting shows a marginal decline in votes cast in favor of management, from 99.3% to 98.6%. This is not exactly strong evidence of a shareholder revolution. The potential is there but the current system is riddled with "practical inefficiencies," "outmoded rules," and "conflicts of interest which prevent effective oversight by institutional shareholders, who are in turn not required to be accountable to those on whose behalf they invest."
While Charkham and Simpson acknowledge that no country can afford to impose burdens on shareholders if it hopes to attract international capital, at bottom they appear to want to stand Milton Friedman on his head. Instead of "the only social responsibility of business is to make a profit," they appear to be working toward a world where the only businesses to make a profit will be those that are socially responsible. But their expressed concerns in this area aren't for specific measures, such as being kind to animals, but to the larger framework which defines the rights and behavior of owners. For example, one of the major changes they seek is for institutions to be less diversified. Holdings should not be too fragmented to warrant investment of time and resources in monitoring. This would shift institutions away from speculation to investment.
In Britain, institutions hold about 80% of the market. Cadbury indicated voting rights are an asset and should be exercised on behalf of those for whom the institution invests. Trustees must be able to demonstrate their voting activity is prudent, carried out with care and in the sole interests of beneficiaries. Charkham and Simpson are ready to move shareholder responsibility to the next level by asserting that trustees not only have a fiduciary duty to monitor companies and vote on behalf of shareholders but also to take positive action if problems are looming. "The duty of care extends to maintaining the health of the company." (p. 145)
Some of their proposed reforms are specific to the British situation, but many are not. One of their more innovative is that dividends should include a bonus for those that voted in the last election. They would like to see a growth of shareholder associations and "deeper" share ownership. Included are ideas for making the annual meeting more than a ritual. One is to give shareholders the right to do more that vote down pay. Let them amend pay. The authors oppose the use of options as in incentive for CEOs and directors. They note the quality of reporting on non-financials (environment, social) needs dramatic improvement and that training for trustees should be mandatory.
In general, the authors argue that ownership of a significant proportion of a company's shares imposes obligations. Just as the tax system obligates those who earn more to pay more, owners with larger holdings should be held to an enhanced duty of care. Larger shareholders have resources and interest that others lack. All fiduciaries have an obligation to see that shares are voted, records are kept of votes and reports are made to beneficiaries. These obligations apply to insurers and mutual funds, as well as to pension funds.
Charkham and Simpson are at the cutting edge of democratic corporate governance. Their vision fits nicely with the technology of the internet which will facilitate the spread of democracy into the world of finance. Widespread reading of Fair Shares and Ms. Simpson's move to the World Bank are sure to add movement to their vision.

Misleading title: Not by Leonardo da Vinci.......2004-05-06
The title of this book is misleading, it suggests that it concerns a psychological theory invented by Leonardo da Vinci about 12 personality types, whereas the author has used the picture 'The last supper' by Leonardo da Vinci as an anchor for her 'own' theory classifying people into 12 astrological types according to the well-known signs of western astrology and relating them to the 12 figures of people of the 'Last supper'. This book is certainly interesting for anybody who sees a connection between 'The last supper' and psychological types, for everybody else and especially for those not interested in astrology it would be inappropriate to buy it.

Book Description
Novice knitters only need to know a few stitches to make a collection of dolls with personality and wardrobes to match. To begin, the practical knitting and sewing know-how section illustrates the simple garter and stockinette stitches used to assemble the dolls. Supplies are minimal and easy to obtain—just yarn and thread, sewing and knitting needles, and some small pieces of fabric for the clothes and accessories. One each of five sections is devoted to creating each doll's identity and accoutrements. Included are sewing templates to cut out and use, knitting charts, and advice on washing and caring for these dolls. This skill-building project book is a start-to-finish playmate maker that will inspire creativity and spark the imagination.

Starlet Babes.......2007-08-12
The pleasure is all yours! Published September, 2005 Knitted Babes: Five Dolls & Their Wardrobes to Knit & Stitch by Claire Garland is an invitation to a modish doll party. Bring your eccentric yarns and retro fabric scraps. This is the place for orange and pink marshmallow creations. Knit up the Babes then outfit them as you choose -- surfer girl or glitzy diva, whoever takes your fancy. Make a Babe, and you'll want more. Here are my variations for fervent fingers:
The Babes: Dot Pebbles surf chick; Flo Tilly delicate dancer; DD Diva in desirable Deco; Rudy Ranch red-haired Western wild country girl; Bunny Bright café bar star.
1. The arms and legs can be worked in i-cord, though the original knitted strips are softer if your doll is to be love-squashed by a little one. Finish the i-cord with four rows of straight stocking stitch to enable flat stitching to body shape.
2. Experienced knitters may prefer to knit the body/head piece in the round. Cast on with waste yarn (or crochet a scrap chain a few more chains than required, then knit up stitches into back bumps of chain. Release chain later when sliding stitches onto needle for cast off.). When doll is completed, leave final stitches for head on a yarn holder, turn inside out, working a 3-needle cast (bind) off across base. Pull through to right side. Stuff doll through small head opening and finish ends.
3. The book instructions are for 4ply yarn, but that's only the beginning. Dye natural wool with plant dyes. Perhaps use handspun or tweed wool; or since only a 50g ball is required, use a luxury fibre (silk, alpaca, cashmere) for a chic Babe.
4. After making a few Retro Babes, you might want to add to your collection with Vintage Babes. Style her wardrobe, adding highlights of violet, pearl, mauve, rosebud, pansy and spring greens. Freshwater pearls (where jewellery packs are sold) make sweet necklaces strung on a length of crochet perle cotton. Cocktail hats can be fashioned from felt, netting, feathers, beads and miniature silk flowers. Sift through broken brooches, bracelets, earrings and necklaces for deft jewels and metal filigree.
5. The clothing patterns given in the book are knitted or sewn. Imagine designing crochet creations for her as well. Begin with an evening shawl or textured blanket for Ruby cowgirl. Diva Babe will thank you for snips of pure silk satin, cotton net and silk georgette.
6. Observe safety rules if the doll is a gift for a small child. If this is your Babe... try out jewellery-making on a manageable scale or accentuate clothing and hats with glass beads. Excite yourself with a new craft, letting Babe model your embroidery, cross-stitch or millinery techniques. Fabric shops are stocking up on retro and vintage prints. Dive in!
Buy the book and have some fun! Vibrant photos, comprehensible instructions and bright knitting charts for fair-isle colourwork. No confusion here. Anyone can create a starlet Babe. (Yes, the neck is floppy, but she is a saucy cuddle and bedtime friend).
The Babes are the best!.......2007-04-18
When this book arrived, all other projects were pushed aside! the instuctions and patterns are easy to understand and the knitted clothing patterns are a good introduction to constructing people sized garments. The reason I gave the book four instead of five stars is the gauge issue mentioned by several others. I am not quite sure if this is due to the fact I am a very tight knitter or the book. It wasn't that huge an issue, I will use this book alot and I'm sure you will too.
So cute - but beware!.......2006-09-07
I love this book, I have been working very hard putting things together for my two little girls, BUT a lot of the instructions haven't worked for me. I have had to improvise a lot. After my girls play with them all the stuffing goes up to their head and down to their bodies, leaving the neck completely floppy, and from reading other reviews I should have checked my gauge, because following the instructions as written everything has come out too small.
After all that, I have to say my girls love the dolls and it was a blast making them.
Love the book but..........2006-07-24
I was very excited when I saw this book as I wanted to make birthday presents for my friend's girls. I tried to match the gauge to make the doll and had to go up to size five needles even though I was using fingering weight yarn. The first outfit I made was the tutu. I matched the guage and still ended up with an outfit that was far too small.
Just beware of of yarn recommendations and needle sizes!
Worth Every Penny!.......2006-06-25
Just received this book and what a super value! So many cute dolls, clothes and shoes to make and super easy, well illustrated format.Even has knitting, sewing and crochet instructions, so the novice can tackle any project. So far all patterns work up great and possibilities are endless!.Great job Claire Garland!

Oh the things you can make!!.......2007-09-25
I am a craft junkie, yes I admit it! I love sewing books that put a new spin on things and show you how to take something old and make it new again and that is exactly what this book does!
The pictures in this book are beautiful and the author truly dose turn ordinary clothes into wearable art.Now given there are some things in this book that I would not personally wear but for teens and even adults who have funky style, you can't go wrong here! That said, There are several skirts that I would wear and I love all of the bags:)
The projects the author created for this book are all personal, almost like a page from her diary.I can definately see lots of special gift ideas here.Alot of the denim items are similar, several have words applied all over but there are lots of unique ideas here that could be applied to many of your own creations.Lots of her ideas would make fabulous quilts or scrapbooking pages.
This book has a nice range of ideas and many tips for printing, painting and embelishing fabric and transforming some of your favorite used up items into reusable products again.I do reccomend this book to all that craft for the many uses that these tequniques could be applied too.

Just a Mention.......2007-04-15
I picked this up at the Great Bridge, (Chesapeake) Virginia library today. My sainted Dad is always wanting me to look up something on the net for him. Today it was stuff about the Country Music "Outlaws". Damned if that book didn't have a whole chapter on it. I just drove it over to his house and he's thrilled! Problem is, now I have to wait to look at it! I'll be buying this one for him-and for me...
Comprehensive country music history.......2007-01-19
This book provided just what I was looking for -- a thorough, well presented background on country music from the early days to the present. It is amply illustrated and serves as a history book/encyclopedia as well as a handsome coffee table book. I think any fan of this musical genre would be glad to own a copy.
Very well received.......2007-01-06
My mother has always loved country music and this was a big hit when she received it for Christmas. Great "coffee table" book also.
Coffee Table Gem Delivers The Goods........2006-11-26
Slick, informative and beautifully rendered, "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" may be the best country music book available today. It really rates 10-Stars. Five for the outstanding writing (over 43 writers contribute) and five for the terrific photos, great illustrations and the overall, art-concept. Quite a package. Subtitled "Country Music In America," it serves as an excellent reference book, covering country music from 1920 to present. Also featured are a foreword by Willie Nelson and articles by Rosanne Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Rosanne, like her late father, does not suffer fools lightly. Here she aims her pen at the "music busines." She reveals the thinking of "corporate types" at a meeting very early in her career. They suggest she look "more f--kable." She was "too appalled to defend" herself, she relates. This was 1979 and Rosanne was 23-years-old. Lord knows what these charming folks tell young, upcomming artists these days. So the book is honest, too. And there's two great chapters, "When Two Worlds Collide" and "All Shook Up," highlighting country music's diverse influences. The stars of Sun Records and even Bob Dylan are given their due. One of Dylan's big hits and one of his very best records, "Lay Lady Lay" was off the "Nashville Skyline" album. This book is a coffee table gem which delivers the goods. High praise and kudos to Alanna Nash and Paul Kingsbury for putting the thing together. A great deal of credit also goes to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Nashville, for provding most of the photos and illustrations. So do yourself a favor. Slap your favorite country artist on the CD player, pour yourself a tall one and than turn a page or two of this book. I did. And all was fine with the world.

This is a good book..........1998-09-04
But you need to have a few comercial plug-ins and this means spend money, instead of this you can learn many tricks other people learn with experience and time. I really don't know if the book isn't good enoght or 3D Studio is very incomplete, filling the holes with expensive IPAS.
3d Studio &Hollywood Gaming Effects.......1997-10-29
First of all, I want to say that I'm from Sweden, so please be indulgence with my language. I've read the magnificant book of 3d Studio & Hollywood Gaming Effects. I used both 3d Studio and 3D max for the tutorials, and I was quite impressed. The book is based on examples and tutorials, made by pros'. The examples in the book are very detailed, and are understandble, even for an amateur like me. And the best thing is that, if you dont understand what they're talking about, just put in the CD-Rom (that comes with the book) find the chapter for the example, and run it. There you have it, step by step, all the exaples in the book on the CD-Rom are explained on the CD-Rom too. A book for both amateurs and proffesionals, that increase the flexibilaty you need to become a graphic artist. And even if you're using 3d Max, the examples in the book - and on the CD-Rom - works properly. Since Max and Studio are based on the same system. The examples in the books are well illustrated, and the layout makes it very easy to find and read. You learn new things every time you browse through the book. And just by watching the exapmles on the CD-Rom, you can load a project - and go through it - see for your self how it's build. And in that way learn some useful hints & tricks. A low cost educational book, that you can get useful hints & tricks from, that you cant get from anywhere else. As I said, my English is bad. I sometimes can't find a way to express my feelings in words. But it is a good book. I rated the book with a 9. Now that, is self explained. Happy rendering, Your Friend In The Jungle Of 3D.
3D Effects For The Experts By The Experts.......1996-06-04
When I first picked this book up I was expecting it to
be another book on teaching the beginner how to do simple
effects. I could never have been so wrong. Starting at
an advanced level, the book assumes you not only have
lots of experience with 3D Studio, but some additional
software tools as well. Then, it shows you, in detail,
how to create certain effects, all of which can be easily
adapted to your scenes. Some of the effects include overlaying
your animation with video so that it 'fits' together, or
extended use of 'Bones Pro' and 'MetaBall Modelers'(which
are plug-ins for 3D Studio) to create organic models.
For beginners, I recommend "3D Studio Special Effects/Book and Cd Rom"
while this book is more for users with a solid grip on
3D Studio.

By understanding Photoshop as a tool to augment photographs- but not as a substitute for good photo-taking- readers will gain a state-of-the-art understanding of Adobe Photoshop as it relates to the larger world of photography.

buy it!.......2007-10-16
the book is well worth the cost: it is well organized and presents all of the capabilities of Photoshop in a pseudo-textbook fashion that are easily understood. At the end of each of the 12 chapters, the author presents a review: questions that the reader should be able to answer and exercises covering the CS3 capabilities that had been explained in that specific chapter. Also, the author includes interviews with 12 noted creative photographers such as Maggie Taylor and Lois Greenfield.
Clear and concise.......2007-10-09
Photoshop is incredibly feature-rich software, and frequently perceived as overwhelming. Weinrebe breaks it down into easily understandable bits while still providing useful tips for very experienced users.
And the interviews with renowned photographers add a unique element, opening - at least a little a bit - a window on their varying perspectives and workflows.
Well done. This book is a valuable addition to every photographer's reference library.
Adobe Photoshop & the Art of Photography.......2007-10-04
I've been using Photoshop for years. Several times I have beaten my brains out trying to set up actions/batch processing for large groups of photos. I always failed. Within two minutes after I first opened Weinrebe's book, I had successfully set up an action and put it to work automatically resizing and optimizing a huge load of wedding photos my wife shot last weekend.
Most software manuals are written by people who don't have the imagination to put themselves in the position of a non-expert user. This book gives you all the steps, in straight clear language, so you can do with Photoshop what you want to do. Further, you will gain artistic perspective, not just technical info. The author's love of photography is infectious.
