Customer Reviews:
True to the spirit of the restaurant.......2006-10-06
Visiting Scotland last summer, we were lucky enough to reserve a table at this remote and wonderful restaurant. We snapped up the cookbook immediately, partly because we love to cook, but also because the photographs of Skye are so much better than any we managed to take. As a cookbook, it is true to the simple, exactingly prepared food served at 3 Chimneys, featuring lots of seafood, beautiful broths and local dairy. Consequently, these recipes work only if the ingredients are perfectly fresh, because they have nowhere to hide: if your mussels are sauced, the sauce is made from their own broth. The shortbread (which is deceptively light) lives and dies by the quality of the butter used. And when approached this way, glorious food results. Ms. Spear is careful to explain the steps of each recipe, the order in which recipes should be made (like a lot of restaurant food, there are recipes within recipes)and how much time to plan for each. That said, it's not a perfect cookbook. You will need a scale that measures grams. The recipes seldom reveal how many servings will be produced (4 to 6, in my experience). And there are little mysteries sprinkled throughout: what is "medium oatmeal", and is it used raw or cooked? The cooking times are too short for steelcut oats, and I can't believe Ms. Spear uses instant rolled oats. However, even these quirks feel true to the spirit of a place that gives the diner less a slick, packaged restaurant experience than a gift of passionate care for beauty and sustenance.

Travel the world.......2004-01-03
I read so many of Phyllis A. Whitney's books when I was growing up that I thought that I had read them all. When I read them when I was a preteen they seemed a little out of date...but I loved them anyway and reread every one that I had! I traveled the world in her books, visiting places that I would probably never get to visit but because of these books, was a little enlightened about the cultures. I was trying to find some books for my preteen to read and remembered all those mysteries and thought I'd try to find those same books for her to read. I searched under Phyllis A. Whitney on Amazon and found a lot that I hadn't read. Phyllis must have been churning out several a year! I am going to order ones that I have and haven't read and read them all right along with my daughter. I can't think of a nicer thing to share. Maybe she will remember them fondly in years to come just like I do now.

Isle of Skye (Collins Ramblers' Guides)
ASIN: 0952190893 |
Book Description
Skye's wonderfully varied and beautiful landscape is perfectly captured in this photo essay. This revised edition is complete with new advice on Patterson's personally developed walking route and provides a stunning journey through peaks, sunsets, and "the garden of Skye." Includes over a hundred large format color pictures, maps, and route details.
Customer Reviews:
Good writing, stunning photography.......2007-07-05
This book helped me decide which parts of Skye to really explore (Sleat and Trotternish). It gave a better history of the island than many guide books.
Gorgeous.......2003-05-13
A lot of photography books are poorly written, but not so this one. Paterson's prose is up to par with his images, which are absolutely gorgeous. Seeing Skye in all four seasons through Paterson's photographs helped me get a much better sense of this wonderful island (I've only visited once). I'm desperate to return--and I'll definitely take this book with me when I do. The routes seem well-planned and thoroughly researched.
I loved it..........2000-07-06
All my travel adventures start with a good book. This is definitely The Book for the Isle of Skye. I don't think you have to physically follow David Paterson's 8-day-long path from Armadale (south) to Duntulm (north) to come away with a delicious sense of having been there. The photographs are stunning. But unlike cheesy tourist photography books, A Long Walk is beautifully written, engaging, and memorable. I haven't reread the book yet, but still often think of one of his gloomiest (and windiest) hikes uphill, when in the midst of a good sulk he is surprised by a lark that was guarding a perfect, cozy nest of eggs. I loved this book because Paterson obviously relishes serendipitous moments like that one, as well as the details and history of a fascinating place, good maps, and of course, excellent photography.
Even if Amazon.com doesn't have it in stock, it's worth the wait... or just get yourself to Scotland and buy one there.

Two leading seers of the Internet predict the best investment opportunities for the next decade in FutureWealth. Francis McInerney and Sean White believe the plummeting cost of information is revolutionizing the world's economy and creating fantastic potential for wealth creation. "Throughout history, wealth has been generated by one fundamental force: the falling cost of information," write McInerney and White, advisers in the telecommunications industry for financial institutions and other investors. "Those who have known how to harness it have made fortunes. Those who have not have been destroyed."
McInerney and White point out that consumers are getting more and more clout in the marketplace because of the collapsing price of computers and other technologies. In an era that will be dominated by consumers, companies must be deft at using the Internet to cut distribution time and reach customers directly. The best-positioned companies are Cisco Systems, Dell Computer, Charles Schwab, and Wal-Mart. All enjoy great cash flow, tremendous market share, rapid growth, and strong brands that will thrive in the global economy. The authors also like Amazon.com, Sprint, and Sony. On the other hand, they see uncertain futures for giants such as AT&T, Intel, and Yahoo! While Yahoo! boasts a global brand, for example, it is also dangerously reliant on advertising, an unproven revenue source on the Internet.
A quick read backed by impressive research, FutureWealth is a fascinating account for investors or anyone interested in some of the trends and top companies that are driving the Internet economy. --Dan Ring
Book Description
The American economy has been turned upside down during the past decade in one of the most tumultuous economic revolutions in world history. The result: the United States has put more distance between itself and its commercial rivals than anyone imagined possible. Annual growth in the U.S. economy matches the size of whole countries. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has reached once-unthinkable heights. Three-quarters of the world's top fifty companies are now American. In FutureWealth, a superbly researched book, the authors provide a startling new way of looking at America's success. The reason for our exceptional performance is the breathtaking pace at which U.S. companies today substitute information for all other resources at their disposal. The authors explore major companies that have substituted information throughout their operations. They also show how the results have been dramatic in those companies' expanded bottom lines and rising stock valuations-- and how investors can both learn and profit from the information revolution around us.FutureWealth is a landmark book and a very timely read for investors, managers, and policy makers the world over.
Customer Reviews:
Another View of Future Wealth.......2000-06-03
The central thesis of this book is that the continuously falling cost of information will be the main source of future wealth for individuals and corporations. McInerney and White start by establishing four Laws. First, cheap information allows customers to pay lower prices. Second, as the cost of information falls, computer power shifts from big computers to small ones. Third, value added always flows to the least regulated, and Fourth, the three Laws operate simultaneously. Based on their experience as consultants to corporations, McInerney and White assert that four companies, Charles Schwab, Wal-Mart, Dell Computers, and Cisco Systems, conform precisely to their specifications. They discuss many others as well. Although a lot of information is covered in short chapters, the book is easy to read and it should be of interest to those concerned with wealth creation in the ever changing new economy.
Insightful Predictions.......2000-05-02
An excellent read. Their blunt candor in this era of obfuscation is refreshing. The insights and predictions certainly provide food for thought.
No future for PC.......2000-04-05
Good book. The author writes a lot about what is not going to work. But not enough light is shed on the actual future. The book is way off mark in predicting the death of telephones. Are we all going to talk over the net? Worth a read.
seminal !.......2000-03-14
as a professional securities trader and investor ... finally someone enlightens us to the implications of what is happening in the whole economy as a result of the "new economy"...why the "brand" stocks of several years ago are like death and in fact may be dying ... why middlemen amd manufacturer reps are in deep trouble ... why microsoft is in a panic that may not help it ... every manager of every company should be required reading ... would suggest corporate retreats to discuss topics of book ... just the best book i've read in 20 years

Creating a Culture of Success: Fine-Tuning the Heart and Soul of Your Organization
Some good insights come from this book about the importance of todays workforce. It presents a point of view about working people and how they can be most productive.
A Road Map for Successful Organizations!.......2005-09-04
In this book the authors suggest and demonstrate that work culture has a lot to do with productivity and profits. They argue that the average worker wants to care about the work they do and to believe that it counts for something more than a pay check. But there are barriers. Not insurmountable barriers, but barriers nonetheless.
Creating A Culture of Success serves as a road map through the mine fields that keep an organization from going from where it is -- to where it wants to be. And this requires the creation of a way of life, rather than a program or series of programs.
The authors' recipe for success: the four Cs -- Change, Competition, Cooperation, and Control. The organization must move from us versus them as an internal competition to we versus they as the organization versus external competition. Creating A Culture of Success provides a variety of specific recommendations for how to do this. One specific example: managers need to move from watchdogs to coaches. To quote the authors:
"It is not work that tires people out -- it is frustration. And frustration is generally introduced by the boss, the systems, policies, or the work environment. The key to eliminating frustration is to focus the work group on one agenda.
1. Each individual has to be willing to check their personal agenda at the door every day.
2. Each person needs to know exactly what the agenda is for each day.
3. Each person is encouraged to participate in deciding how the work will be divided and accomplished.
4. Complimentary words between workers and leaders throughout the day help immensely."
The book is filled with practical examples and "how tos." I highly recommend it.
Written in plain terms .......2004-10-30
Now in an expanded and updated second edition, Creating A Culture Of Success: Fine-Tuning The Heart And Soul Of Your Organization by expert and experienced business consultants Charles Dygert and Richard Jacobs defines what organizational culture is, and how to make it successful in any entrepreneurial enterprise or corporate business. Emphasizing the importance of setting a positive, challenging yet supportive work environment, that fosters healthy cooperation instead of destructive competition, chapters address how to build trust at all levels, focus on the zone of improvement, uphold high quality standards, and much more. Written in plain terms that any general reader will rapidly pick up on, Creating A Culture Of Success is as useful and seminal a guide for non-profit or community organizations as it is for businesses of all sizes.

Great for every level .......2006-02-22
I saw this on Simply Quilts and was so intrigued I actually wrote to the author asking if she gave lessons. Then I got the book and found you don't need a teacher. The instructions and illustrations are absolutely so clear that a child could make this quilt. Several reviewers mentioned using these designs on borders -- thanks, I had not thought about that -- good tip. One last thing, I have a sister who refused to learn to quilt. Guess what, she is making a "Simply Seminole" quilt. Gotta love that.

Book Description
This beautiful book is a resource for those who want to create a contemplative garden or to better understand what it is to follow a contemplative path. It will be of interest to landscape architects and designers, anyone interested in the fusion of East and West in cultural expression, and garden lovers everywhere. It explores the innovative approach to garden and landscape design found in the work of Martin Mosoko, a landscape architect and Zen teacher working in the Rocky Mountain region of Colorado. Mosoko's work incorporates principles of Oriental and Western garden design to make bold and original statements in his landscapes. Mosoko explains how to deploy the materials of the garden so that their arrangement reflects the contemplative mind. The chief paradigm he uses is the mandala, a symbolic picture of the ideal world used in some form in many of the world's cultures. Rocks, streams, plants, paths, and structures of the garden each take their place in the mandala as one of its five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. The means to produce a balance of these elements is the mind conditioned by meditation and a clear understanding of its own nature. Inner harmony is expressed as outer beauty. Mosoko's approach to landscaping transforms space into spirit, infused with magic. It can be used to create anything from a small courtyard to a country estate, in any environment from the city to the suburbs. After explaining theory and method the book leads us into five of Mosko's gardens, each alive with the energy and excitement he brings to his designs. Although located in different parts of the country and created in different styles, each garden is a reflection of the mind of clarity and calm.
Customer Reviews:
Extraordinary insights.......2004-10-18
This book is remarkable in at least three regards. First, it is so finely produced that we, as readers, can actually feel our way into the gardens it is showing us. Second, the principles of garden-making it offers us are profound, simple and flexible: we can see how the Mosko gardens emerge from them, and how our own might too. Third, and most unusual, it is deeply spiritual, coming from years of meditative practice in the Zen and Tibetan tradtions, as well as in unnamed native traditions of spirit. In the deepest sense this book is beauty as instruction.
landscape as spirit: creating the contemplative garden.......2004-10-15
this book's title, if the picture of the cover is real, is different from the Amazon title. who proof's this stuff?
Beautiful, Inspiring - a great gift.......2004-04-29
This gorgeously made and printed book will inspire ANY gardener or person who enjoys gardens. The photos take you into a world of amazing gardens. I'm not a garden nut, but I love a beautiful book and this one is on my coffee table. The writing is clear, creative, and very informative. This book is an excellent gift to anyone who loves architecture, design, or landscapes.
Landscape as Spirit.......2003-12-27
In this time of shortening days when everything but us hurry up humans is sensibly quieting down, what a pleasure and a treasure to sit down in a comfy armchair and open this book. Turning the pages is stepping into a contemplative garden and wandering the paths. Letting the colors and shapes and scents and sounds take you in. A beauty feast - massaging your worried mind, snatching speedy thought, soothing your bustling spirit.
And when, a timeless while later, you close the book and stand up in your feet again, you are changed.
Restored, refreshed and more in love with life.
How does a book do all this?
I don't know.
That is part of the delightful mystery and what I love about it.
Clearly, these two authors have been having a good time. Working hard, paying attention in their own lives to what it is that creates harmony and balance. Playing with rock, water, plants, and light. Listening deeply to the voices that seem to encourage us to stop arguing with reality and relax back into our natural sanity. Now, with gorgeous photographs and wise words, they are sharing with us what they've discovered along the way.
I suggest "reading" Landscape as Spirit once through just for the images. Turning the pages slowly and letting the gardens enter and speak. Then, a second time, for the words - inspirational and practical, for the professional gardener and layperson alike.
Thank you to Mosko and Norden for what you have given birth to and your generosity of spirit in offering it out into the world.
A spiritual and visual delight.......2003-11-28
Mosko is a Zen teacher and Landscape Architect and this book seeks to explain his philosophy by showing and describing how the teachings and practice of both disciplines relate to each other and with the external world.
Most people when they think of Zen and gardens can only think of the immaculate stone and gravel gardens of Japan. Mosko shows that the true understanding of the basic principles of harmony and balance leads to the creation of gardens that delight the eye and the soul.
Taking each element of the garden individually, Mosko explains the spiritual balance between the opposites and the harmony of that balance which, when translated successfully into a real garden, results in an immediate sense of 'rightness' when the garden is experienced. This 'rightness' is beautifully captured by Noden's photographs. The testament to Mosko's brilliance is that the gardens are 'right' for a spectrum of clients not just 'right' for Mosko. The superficial disparity between The Adobe and Flowers in Space lessens the closer you look and you can see the underlying principles of harmony and balance are exactly the same for both.
The beauty of this book for me is that I have found it wildly instructive and inspirational despite having little or no knowledge or understanding of 'Eastern' religion. I found that certain phrases and design concepts would arise in my mind long after I had read the book, infusing me with a desire to express those thoughts in my work.
This book is a must for anyone considering a contemplative garden and a very worthy reference for anyone wanting to design a garden of any sort.

Book Description
Children's lives today are complex, stressful, and dangerous. Kids are overscheduled, come home to empty houses and neighborhoods where they don't know a soul, and in school, face violence-all too often from their peers. In Stopping at Every Lemonade Stand, James Vollbracht provides a blueprint for transforming our unstable and disconnected culture into a healthier, supportive one. Vollbracht bases his approach on six overlapping circles of community-our personal circle, families, neighborhoods, larger communities, business worlds, and elders-and outlines simple actions within each circle that will help rescue our kids. Through a rich blend of heartwarming anecdotes and creative, practical strategies, Stopping at Every Lemonade Stand affirms the age-old wisdom that the power and responsibility to heal our communities rest in our own hands.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book!.......2003-01-05
This book was short and easy to read - I read it in two days (while being a mom to 2 boys!). The author describes 6 circles: the individual, the family, the neighborhood, the community, businesses and government, and our elders; and gives examples of steps that people all around our country our taking within these 6 circles to create a safe culture for our children.
What I like most about this book is that it left me feeling hopeful and enthused about the steps I would take. The author does a great job of showing the reader that one doesn't necessarily have to spend a lot of money or tackle an overwhelming task in order to make a positive difference in our world; even little steps that fit in to one's lifestyle DO make a difference.
This book will change a reader's thoughts from, "I know something needs to be done, but what can I do?" to "What great ideas, I can start today!" I definately recommend this book! As a matter of fact, I'm buying copies for the principle of my son's school anf the mayor of our city!

Book Description
In Rustic Cubism, Bruce Adams tells the fascinating story of Moly-Sabata, an art colony founded in the Rhône Valley during the height of French modernism by Cubist pioneer Albert Gleizes. Following his social and spiritual agenda of earthly labor and a Celtic-medievalist view of Christianity, Gleizes' disciples worked to fuse Cubism with a revival of ancient agrarian, artisanal traditions. The most important and committed member of this experimental commune was ceramicist Anne Dangar (1885-1951).
In part a gripping biography of this Australian expatriate, Rustic Cubism chronicles Dangar's personal battles and the tumult of the World War II era during her tempestuous tenure at Moly-Sabata. Dangar dedicated herself to the colony's aims by working in the region's village potteries, combining their vernacular elements with Gleizes' design methods to arrive at a type of rustic Cubism. Her work there would ultimately be rewarded; her pieces can today be found in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza, the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, and many other museums.
Rustic Cubism places Dangar at the heart of Moly-Sabata's alternative art movement—one that, in its nostalgic present, attempted to construct a culture based on the distant past. Generously illustrated with photographs of the art and social milieu of the period, this captivating and original narrative makes a considerable contribution to our understanding of French modernism and early twentieth-century cultural politics as well as of the life of a most talented and intriguing female artist.
