Flame Dragons of the Korean War.......2004-06-05
As a fellow former Marine I found this to be a facinating book. Jerry and Jack recorded the first hand accounts of the battles and day to day lives of the men who manned the 9 flame tanks used in the Korean War. They have many facinating stories such as trying to get Luke the Gook routed from his ridge and then attempting to back down an icy and snow covered road after using their napalm and explosive rounds on the target. As often happens in combat and the field, things go wrong, the tank slides down the hill only to be caught by a tree. It takes several days to get the tank out and not only do they have to deal with the weather and terrain, but an enemy dropping hundreds of mortar rounds on their recovery operation.
It is one thing to be shot during battle, but the Flame Platoon instilled the fear of being burned alive.

Ever since his childhood days of rescuing, raising, and releasing orphaned blue jays and raccoons, William B. Karesh knew that working with wild animals was his calling. After training as a veterinarian and working for years with zoo animals, he developed the International Field Veterinary Program (IFVP) for the Wildlife Conservation Society, providing advice and assistance to conservation programs worldwide. His adventures battling bureaucrats, poachers, and other short-sighted humans while endangered animals lay sick and dying are recounted in Appointment at the Ends of the World. The book is an exciting, inspiring read that appeals to animal lovers, environmentalists, and devotees of amazing stories alike.
From Borneo to Zaire, Karesh has shuttled through much of the world to bring much-needed medicines and surgical techniques to populations of animals that can't afford to lose even one to disease or injury. Plenty of illustrations and color plates bring the rhinos, peccaries, and macaws helped by the good doctor vividly to life, and the maps and sidebars help the reader achieve a sense of place missing from so many world-spanning books. Appointment at the Ends of the World is as certain to enrage as it is to delight; more than this, though, it kindles the desire to reach out and help those in need. --Rob Lightner

A good storyteller, doing a unique thing.......2006-08-09
Since the largest portion of the book was about his sojourns in central Africa, it's quite obvious that this is his favorite place, but his adventures in Indonesia, South America, and other remote locales were interesting as well. The book was as much about his colleagues and friends as it was about him.
His "postcards", which described local culture, history, and politics, were essential to understanding his missions.
You can learn the most about him by Googling Billy Karesh; this appears to be what he wishes to be called.
Critters, politics, and humor all in one.......2005-08-16
Excellent book! I originally checked out this book at my campus library based on a recommendation from my uncle, a biology teacher. I enjoyed this book so much that I bought a copy after I read it.
This book is a must read for future wildlife veterinarians and wildlife biologists.
Dr. Karesh is able to draw you in to the many fascinating and sometimes dangerous places he travels to as a wildlife veterinarian. He also offers up a realistic perspective on wildlife conservation efforts in third world countries.
Hope you enjoy it.
So enjoyable.......2004-11-24
THe stories are incredible. In his writing he delivers the visual scene and feelings through his eyes, the animal's scene and feelings through their eyes, and the past present and future for these creatures of the Earth. I have passed this book on and purchased copies for others to enjoy, and they did.
Just Plain Bad.......2004-06-19
I'm a huge supporter and reader of animal books, especially those with veterinarian authors. When I first saw this book at the library, I thought, "Wow, a new twist on and old idea... a WILDLIFE veterinarian." However, it wasn't far into the book I got sick of hearing about irrelevant, uninteresting happenings. The author is cocky and self-absorbed. His attempts at humor and general likeability are pathetic and easy to see through. I'm a hardy reader and will usually force myself to finish off even the most boring of books, but it was about halfway through I had to shut it for the last time. I actually got angry while reading it because it was THAT bad!
I'd love to read it again.......2002-03-03
I read this book when it first came out three years ago, and I still think about it. His stories about the wonderful animals around the world touched my heart and I would highly reccomend this book if you enjoy reading about animals.

Book Description
What do you get when you take Indiana Jones, mix in a dash of Marlon Perkins and a bit of Jack Hanna, add just a pinch of Doctor Doolittle, and blend vigorously? Dr. William Karesh, D.V.M., wildlife veterinarian and adventurer extraordinaire.
From the jungles of the Amazon, to the golden savannas of Africa, to the rocky and unforgiving shores of Patagonia, Dr. Karesh manages an extraordinary medical practice. A healer of international renown, his patients are often as ferociously-toothed as they are difficult to subdue. As creator and head of the one-of-a-kind International Field Veterinary Program for the Wildlife Conservation Society, Karesh's days and nights are devoted to the catching of crocodiles, the examining of orangutans, and the tagging of tigers. An adventurer whose commitment to conservation is as fierce as the landscapes and animals he encounters, his exploits put fictional characters to shame.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing tales.......2005-01-19
This book tells the story of Dr. William Karesh, a wildlife veterinarian. Karesh tells us about his early interest in wild animals, and how he came to study veterinary science in graduate school. Following his studies, he used his skills working for zoos and the Wildlife Conservation Society. Now he spends much of his time traveling around the world studying the habits and health of various wild creatures. Highlights of Karesh's stories include nursing an injured okapi back to health, and chasing peccaries through the Peruvian forests. The best tale of all, however, has to be that of the time he was high in a tree, attempting to stare down a jaguar who thought he smelled like a nice hunk of meat. The point of the book is not all light-hearted stories, however. Karesh provides us with some important points to ponder about wildlife conservation and the future of the planet.
SPECIALIZATION PAR EXCELLENCE.......2001-04-13
Books by vets are usually very interesting and concern more common animals. This book is different as Dr. Karesh only works with wild animals and puts his life on the line many times during the year.
It is always interesting to discover how a person got into his line of work and this story is no exception. Though he loved animals from birth (almost), being a vet was furtherest from his mind.
This is a good read and highly recommended.
Wonderful!.......2000-08-22
Simply put - this is my most favorite book of all time! If you love wild animals, adventure, and a great read - this well-written, heart felt book is for you!
House Calls.......1999-12-14
I listened to this book on audio tape, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't realize a vet could enjoy his life so much. Each illness was an adventure, and some were quite dangerous. He obviously loves his work, and won't let anything stand in his way. His stories were humorous and interesting, and just technical enough to appreciate his vast medical knowledge. This book was a pleasure to listen to, and I recommend it highly.

Emeril Lagasse needs no introduction. TV chef par excellence, and author of eight other cookbooks, he's become something of a one-man industry. Emeril's Potluck, concerned with "comfort food with a kicked-up attitude," follows the MO of his other books--easy, attractive recipes (in this case 150-plus of them) presented in a voce that will be reassuring to some, while all-too-familiar to others. If Potluck seems even more mechanically formulaic than the other books, it nonetheless contains many valuable recipes for a full range of dishes and drinks. Among these, Cajun Quiche, Oven-Poached Salmon with a Pink Grapefruit and Tarragon Sauce, and Slow-Cooked Pork Roast with Barbecue Sauce are representative and worthy. The drink section shouldn't be overlooked and contains recipes for the likes of Milk Shakes for grownups, which include kalúa, and the nonalcoholic mango lassai. Two casserole chapters offer easy treats like Mexican Breakfast Casserole and Risotto and Mushroom Casserole. Desserts like Deep-Dish Banana Pudding with Chocolate Sauce are satisfyingly no-frills. The guiding--perhaps, nominal--idea is that the dishes are perfect for gatherings, picnics, and tailgate parties, but they're also suitable for everyday enjoyment. Readers should also note that many of the recipes require Emeril's food products--for which online sources are given, but no descriptions. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
America's favorite chef Emeril Lagasse is ready to party. Parties and celebrations mean food. Lots of food: tureens of soup, platters of chicken, bowls of salad, casseroles of baked pasta. From family reunions to holiday buffets, summer barbecues to tailgate parties, and weekend brunches to bridal showers,
Emeril's Potluck offers crowd-pleasing dishes perfect for gatherings with friends and family.
Emeril's Potluck brings together everything Emeril loves most about cooking and eating. The food is simple, flavorful, and perfect for sharing at any get-together. Each recipe serves a whopping 8 to 10 people, but don't assume you're making too much -- everyone will be heading back for seconds and thirds of these Emerilized starters, entrees, drinks, sides, and desserts.
Start by toasting the occasion with a glass of Champagne Punch, a Watermelon Daiquiri, or an Orange Emeril. Then let the feast begin! Classic Blue Cheese Dip, Alain's Sweet and Spicy Asian Wings, or Sausage-Stuffed Mushrooms will get your party started right! Main courses range from Olive-Stuffed Leg of Lamb and Creole Mustard and Herb-Wrapped Beef Tenderloin to homey favorites such as Charlotte's Lasagna Bolognese, Penne à la Vodka Casserole, and Tuna Tetrazzini. Of course, it wouldn't be a party without dessert, so save room for Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie, Strawberry Shortcake, and Emeril's Tiramisu.
The recipes are quick, easy, and portable. Enjoy these dishes at home or take them on the road.
Emeril's Potluck -- so foolproof, so easy, so crowd pleasing that luck has nothing to do with it.
Customer Reviews:
This is his best cookbook........2007-08-07
I own several Emeril cookbooks and most of them are so complicated they are not reproducible at home. This is not the case with Potluck. I have made several recipes from this book and they turned out great and got rave reviews. The Spinach Enchiladas were declared restaurant quality by my brother-in-law. I also made the Spanish Rice and it was awesome. I have made the homemade ranch potato salad and it was a huge hit. The Ambrosia turned out good...I don't have my book in front of me so I can't remember all the recipes off the top of my head.
You will love this cookbook.
Kick it up a notch.......2007-03-17
The thing I love about this book is that there are many classic recipes such as green bean casserole and lemon squares that are just so much better than the old recipes. This book is also good for company and large families(of which I am a representative). There are no bland recipes here. They are all to die for.If I had to choose one of my many cookbooks to rescue from a fire, this would definitely be it.
Emeril's Potluck:comfort food with attitude........2007-01-05
I ordered this and another Emeril Cookbook for my daughters Christmas present. When they had not arrived by the 20th, I called Amazon customer service. They said they would send out two more overnight. Well on the 22nd of Dec. both orders arrived here. They were opened by other than me. So now I have to send a set back to you. I'd love to just keep them and save the trouoble, but I really can't afford to do that. If you will e-mail me a return address I will get them in the mail to you.
Sincerely,
Valerie B. Anderson

Great guide to NJ.......2005-05-10
A small guide to a lot of the food paradises available in New Jersey written by a native.
Peter Genovese is a writer for The Star-Ledger, a newspaper based in Newark, New Jersey. He has two regular columns: "The Munchmobile" series, as well as "Eat With Pete". He has authored a total of six books, four of which are about New Jersey.
New Jersey is not all that most people think. Yes, it is one of the smallest US states, being 47th in size, yet 9th in population. Also, yes, New Jersey is known for chemical products, electrical equipment and being a suburb of New York City. But did you know that New Jersey is also known as the "Garden State"? That New Jersey also relies on tourism and their agriculture as part of their economy? Anyone who has lived in New Jersey or has travelled here a lot knows about Jersey tomatoes, their wonderful fresh seafood and how New Jersey has the best diners, and even makes award winning wines!
The book is divided into four sections: North Jersey, Central Jersey, South Jersey and the Jersy Shore. Each of these sections has information on numerous delicious places to find the food of New Jersey, such as Made Here; Specialty Stores & Markets; Farmers' Markets; Farm & Farm Stands; Food Happenings; Learn To Cook; Learn About Wine; Landmark Eateries; Brewpubs & Microbreweries; and Wine Trails.
There are no photographs in this guide, only drawings. The book is easy-to-read as it lists establishments and gives a brief overview. There are no complicated terms to embrace, just the facts. The author has even included some recipes from a few of the establishments in this book, such as: Garden State Seafood Salad and Strawberries with Creme Anglais.
Unless you are a collector of food guides, this book is really only for people who visit New Jersey, have a summer home here or live here.
Great Little Book.......2005-03-22
This book provided some really interesting ideas for nights out or days exploring. There are some great suggestions for restaurants and diners. Suggestions for Indian restraints were really helpful (my favorite ethnic cuisine), description of the Charterhouse in Weehawken was also spot on. Diner descriptions are also interesting.
The list of farmers markets and wineries also provide good suggestions for shopping trips. The author goes further by providing accounts of some of the more interesting food producers (e.g. Fiorre's the mozzarella maker in Hoboken).
Farmers markets, cheese and butcher shops are all covered. The author throws in some good recipes.
Contrasting to Zagat's (practical but predictable) this is a fun, lucid and well written food book. It has a wide ranging scope with great coverage of numerous topics.
Book Description
Locally renowned food columnist Pete Genovese reveals the best sources for blueberries, barbecue, buffalo jerky, and much more with this much-needed guide. Perfect for planning a day's outing, finding special ingredients, or just learning about the foods of New Jersey, it features wonderful shops, open-air markets, one-of-a-kind restaurants, and fantastic food-related events throughout the state.
The author also offers his top picks in a variety of categories, including best blueberry pie, Italian ice, and mozzarella cheese, plus the ultimate crabcake sandwich.
The indispensable handbook of New Jersey's gastronomic delights.

cute book for cat lovers, but not for the bradbury fan.......2003-05-14
It's a very cute book with good illustrations. A good gift for teen or adult cat lovers or for cat lovers to read to cat loving children. Generally not for Ray Bradbury fans as it is nothing like his other writing.
For cat lovers and others.......2002-11-15
Not being a particular Bradbury fan, I wasn't sure about this book when someone gave it to me for--of all things--a baby gift! But we are a four-cat family, so we read it to our infant son, and, now that he's two and a half, it has become one of his very favorite books (honored alongside Green Eggs and Ham and My First Truck Board Book). It has introduced him to "adult" language ("big words") with beautiful rhythm as well as aesthetic illustrations in a context he knows well. And for Mom and Dad, it has well fulfilled the advice not to give your child a book you don't want to read a hundred and fifty thousand times. Recommended for children and adults of all ages!
A slight companion to the dog book.......2000-04-11
Let's get one thing straight: Ray Bradbury is one of myfavorite writers. His novel _Something Wicked This Way Comes_ is oneof my personal favorites. I have read Bradbury stories aloud to live audiences, and performed a couple of them from memory as well.
But Bradbury is not much of a poet. On the spectrum from Eliot and Stevens down to McKuen, he comes much closer to the latter. Bradbury writes rich, poetic prose which works as such most of the time, but his poems are rarely more than mildly interesting or pretty thought-rambles.
So it is with this little book, a companion to "Dogs Think That Every Day Is Christmas" -- both being Hallmark-card-ish tributes to their respective domestic quadrupeds. (Lest you think me a non-animal lover, I hasten to add that I live with a dog and two cats, myself.) The illustrations by Louise Reinoehl Max are nice enough, but hardly inspired.
This inexpensive bauble is suitable only for Bradbury completists (which includes me -- I ordered one from Amazon, after all), or perhaps for people who are VERY sentimental about felines. An introduction briefly describes some of the more than three dozen cats who have shared Bradbury's life.
I'm glad to have a copy of this book to fill out my collection, but I doubt I'll crack it open again.

Glorious Patchwork represents yet another craft breakthrough for Kaffe Fassett, who has fearlessly conquered the worlds of color knitting, needlepoint, and rug hooking. Here he teams up with quilt designer Liza Prior Lucy to produce a series of color-drenched patchwork designs that have a powerful impact and a subtle, pleasing symmetry. Fassett's text is chattier and more interesting than in his previous works; he is more capable of communicating the inspiration he finds in the natural patterns that the rest of us hardly notice. This is a book that will thrill textile and fiber craftspeople.

Art Quilts.......2007-01-10
I like everything this guy designs.. great reference for quilters if they need a little inspiration to get going again. Great color pictures as usual for Kaffe.
FEAST FOR YOUR SENSES.......2006-07-03
Deliciously rich photographically and in its text. Even a non-quilter would devour all of it's many flavors and tastes... a "cookbook" for fabrics...cook this one up!
Deliciously inspirational & great coffee table book!!.......2005-04-02
Heavenly explosion of colour across every page excites the eyes and gets ones fingers itching!
One of the most inspiring patchwork books I have seen, the quilts zing & colour combinations are fabulous.
If you are new to patchwork and need a step-by-step guide, this book provides it more than generously.
For experienced quilters it serves as an admirable ideas book, as it is brim-full of new ideas in design & layout.
Although Fassett does not stitch the quilts, he collaborates with Liza Prior Lucy very satisfactorily.
The book covers 8 Soft Pastel hued quilts, Bright "Circus" quilts, "Leafy Gardens" (my favorite section) containing 5 quilts, "Antique Stone" very traditional & quite elegant, and "Renaissance" quilts, which contain brocade & velvet combinations and all sorts of rich hues of saturated colour.
All quilts have step-by-step instructions, and actual size templates are included for photocopying at the back of the book.
A fabulous investment! I first borrowed this book from the library nearly 10 years ago, then purchased it 5 years ago, and I am still browsing through it. It is a great coffee table book and my guests are never able to resist it!

A delight to the senses.......2003-08-05
I have coveted my copy of Glorious Patchwork for several years now. I go to it for inspiration for color, pattern and texture for any design or art related or creative endeavor. This book is laden with beautiful pictures, but even more inspiring is the use of the quilts in the interior design aspect. I love this book, and I plan on keeping this book nearby for more ideas!
Great Book for Lovers of Color.......2001-06-20
This is my favorite quilt book - I've spent hours pouring over the delicious pages of this gorgeous book. Fassett is a genius of color design, and his quilt designs are sumptuous. If you love color, buy this book! (I've made the "Leafy Green" quilt and now I'm working on "Stamps and Money" - great fun!)

Smell the salt air!.......2003-05-01
This compilation of designs captures that distinct place and season, the sunny summer beaches and shores as seen through the varied styles of dozens of talented quilters. These quilts use a wide variety of different techniques, explained and illustrated in great detail, and there are quilts at all levels, for beginners and veterans alike. My favorite of these is Flavin Gloverýs ýA Day at the Beach,ý a traditional geometric rendering of the beach with its colorful umbrellas done in modified log cabin blocks. Bringing a smile is Ami Simmsý ýBikini Quilt,ý dubbed by her mother ýBoobs and Bellybuttons,ý which is made in a kind of tessellated arrangement of hourglass blocks. And Elsie Vredenburg renders the lighthouses of Fundy in a wonderful profusion of snailýs trail blocks. This book will inspire you to raid your stash for beachy blues and browns and go dig out your flip-flops.

You must have this book, If you have Black Children!.......2001-12-25
As a mother of 4 bi racial children, I must say, this is going to be my Parental Bible! As far as I'm concerned my children did come with a manual and THIS BOOK IS IT!
I am so pleased and keep reading it over and over again. I have learned so much and am grateful to the authors for writing such a fine book of parenting. As my children grow I will have this book on hand for them to read and most likely pass it on to them when they become parents, many years from now.
This is a Must Read.......2001-07-18
This is an excellent book with wonderful information. As a biracial woman married to a white man and raising a black child, it answered all of my questions and then some... A valuable book that I will treasure forever. Thank you!!!
Afro-American Children.......2000-11-30
I thought the book Different and Wonderful was an excellent book. I came across this book at the Philadelphia Free Library, when I was doing a report on Afro-American children development and socialization process. I thought the book had a lot of resourceful information about raising Afro-American children as well as giving resourceful information to Afro-American Parents on how to look at themselves and checking themselves as Afro-American parents.I am not a parent yet, but I will be oneday.I am very glad that I had came across this book because, I know that I will be a better Afro-American parent, when I do decide to raise my Afro-American children. Also, this book has equiped me with stronger child rearig practices on how to deal with all ages of Afro-American children.
