Book Description
The colorful world-within-a-world of postage stamps illustrates this lyrical account of a young girl's experiences in Paris. When she and her family move to the city for a year, one of the first places her father takes her is to the stamp market. Her adventures are magically captured in the dainty images of the postage stamps she collects. Young readers will delight in this uniquely told story of a girl finding her own place in a world far from home.
Customer Reviews:
Captivating!.......2006-03-18
I'm a relatively new stamp collector, and came across a reference to this book in a stamp magazine...as a book that would intrigue a youngster. Trust me, it is beautifully published and quite charming, even for an adult! The color reproductions of each stamp are gorgeous! I went one step further, and decided to acquire each of the stamps that are depicted in the book. What fun! I have almost completed my search, but as most stamp collectors will tell you, a lot of the fun IS the search! I highly recommend this as a gift book for anyone young or young-at-heart to introduce them to the magic of stamps!
What a 'fun' Geography lesson !.......2005-10-06
Ten-year-old Leslie tells her story of living in Paris for a year, illustrating this appealing odyssey with postage stamps. Her mother, father and 'baby' brother Michael and all of Paris play important roles. Her father introduces her to collecting stamps & they visit the famous stamp market, and become acquainted with several stamp sellers - - their carefully gloved hands and often gruff manners.
For Leslie it is a year of new sights & friendships, of a newly acquired language, and stamps chosen for the album that will bulge with special memories when she returns to the States. Young readers will share the excitement of this adventure, and maybe even feel the lure of stamp collecting. What a wealth of French artists are included! Leslie goes to the beach where her school friends swim topless & there is an appropriate painting by Ingres of a shy nude figure - - mirroring how she felt.
Other art is shown in a stamp from "Ceskolovensko" with a handsome magician doing an improbable card trick, a stamp from Monaco with "La Lectrice" . . .even Romanian stamps of radishes & cucumbers! I hope students (including home-schooled) are inspired to adapt their experiences in stories about their own country, state, or particular area of interest: Art, food, bridges, etc.?
McHAIKU has 'graduated' from her stamp-collecting days but enjoyed Leslie's travelogue tremendously, with a good topping of nostalgia. Thank you, Leslie Jonath!
An artistic travelogue.......2005-04-03
Like most Chronicle books, Postmark Paris is an artistic adventure through the boulevards of Paris as described through a series of postage stamps, narrated by a nine-year old girl who navigates the city for the first time. It is a small, tidy book, journal-like entries opposite the postage stamps, each related through a memory or occasion, personalized by a thoughtful girl reflecting on her experiences in Paris. The girl's collection mirrors a world within a world, visiting the usual tourist sites, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Montparnasse, the twisting Seine.
Timbres is the French word for stamps and the girl carefully pastes each one into her orange stamp album with transparent pages, stamps from every country imaginable, all colors and shapes, decorated with fruit, flowers and people. There is even an open-air stamp market off the Champs-Elysses, the vendors eager to share their wares with the neophyte stamp collector.
The family settles in for their year in France, picnicking on balmy days, viewing the Luxumborg Gardens to see tulips and poppies, as well as the gardens of the Tuilleries by the Louve. They snack on fried fish, fritures, on the banks of the Marne River outside of Paris. As the year winds down, the girl bids adieux to her schoolmates, who line up to "pour faire les bisoux- to kiss me goodbye on the cheek."
Later, back home in California, the girl keeps her treasured book of collected stamps on a nearby shelf; whenever she grows nostalgic for those picturesque Parisian days, she turns the pages, reliving her adventures, each memory reflected in the stamp so carefully pasted on the page. This small, colorful selection is the repository for fond memories of a fascinating country, Postmarked Paris. Appropriate for child or adult, this whimsical book will most likely hold the interest of nine and up, the journal entries full of names and French phrases, the writing small and personal, family outings and details of this extraordinary city. Luan Gaines/ 2005.

Whimsical Autobiography.......2001-05-27
For lovers of Nick Bantock (Griffin & Sabine,), and Karen Elizabeth Gordon, (Deluxe Trasitive Vampire, and Paris Out of Hand,) this small volume is a time capsule of a young girl's year growing up in Paris. Told via her stamp collection, (1 colorful French stamp and one life-vignette per page,) it traces her year with her family and school friends until the end, when they must leave Paris to come back to the United States.
Inspires anyone interested in collage, (although there are no collages in the book per se, I loved it anyway,) Parisian life, and stamp collecting.
The only thing I wanted was more. Where is the author now? How did her stamp collection become this book? Why is this book out of print?? Alas.

Inspirational anthology gets 4 hanky rating.......2001-02-22
Beautifully written inspirational tales of the human-animal bond. The stories naturally flow in a touching parade of vignettes. A quick read...even more enjoyable the second time. A real gem!! Would be a wonderful gift book, for any occasion. Appropriate for all ages. Hopefully, there will be a sequel.
comments on book.......2000-11-16
I found this book interesting, in the fact that it held my interest all the way through. I didn't put the book down until I was completely finished reading. I found it well written and found all the stories very believable. I feel that this book would be of interest to to a variety of ages. I would recomend this book to a friend..
What a Nice Afternoon.......2000-10-31
This is a nice book to while away an afternoon. A good book to give as a gift.
Animals who could teach humans sensitivity and compassion.......2000-10-31
Appealing stories for readers who count animals among their best friends.
Book Description
This exploration into the structure of various weaves provides an understanding of how each weave works, guiding weavers to design and weave their own beautiful fabrics. The underlying principles that govern a particular kind of structure are explained, as are modifying the basic draft and choosing fibers and yarns. Comprehensive and detailed, the book covers plain weave, twills, satin, waffle weaves, distortions of the grid, three-element weaves, loom-controlled double weave, Bedford cords and piques, loom-controlled pile weaves, and crepe weaves.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, essential for really understanding weaves.......2007-08-17
I was very impressed by this book. I just picked it up a few days ago, and already have a much better understanding of what in a weave structure makes stable cloth, what to expect from different weaves in terms of draping and breathe-ability, working with Z and S-spun yarns, and even a bit about what to expect from different fibers (although this is not the focus of the book.) The construction of this book is also excellent--it's a heavy, hardbound book with coated paper and clear, well-shot photography. I'm excited to have this in my weaving library and highly recommend it.
Great for your reference library.......2007-04-05
Alderman is one of those rare combinations of artist AND teacher. The photographs grab you first. The charts are clear. The explanations are detailed enough for beginners. The various weave structures are charted for 2-, 3-, 4- 6-, 8-, and more-harnesses, as each structure may allow. Those new to weaving might find the directions less intimidating if they read the first two chapters before skimming the later chapters; the explanations will make more sense. This is a good boost to your creativity as well as a source to better understand weave structures.
Worth every penny - a great weavers book.......2007-01-15
I bought this book at the same time I purchased Twill Thrills, and couldn't tell you which one I like better. Mastering Weave Structures is a must have for every weaver, especially new weavers, or anyone wanting a better understanding of why things look the way they do, and how to make something look the way you want it to. Loads of beautiful pictures are inspiring. A great book for weavers of all levels.
Mastering Weave Structures:.......2007-01-03
I am glad I ordered this. Is a classic weaving book and should be used for a long time
Great Fun.......2006-08-05
I have been weaving my way through this book. It has been a blast. The photographs are beautiful. I have learned many things and am enjoying each structure.
Book Description
Featuring more than 250 photographs and 50 anatomical drawings, Deep Tissue Massage is the standard guide to the essentials of touch, biomechanics, and positioning options for a multitude of strategies to treat all major conditions encountered in a bodywork practice.
The book is divided into three sections. “Fundamentals” covers basic skills of palpation, explaining the deeper layers of the body and presenting detailed instruction on working with these layers to release tension. This section gives clear information on the proper use of knuckles, fist, forearms, and elbows in preventing injury to the therapist. “Strategies” offers more precise protocols and treatment plans for the entire body with emphasis on client positioning options to stretch muscles rather than just kneading tissues. “Caveats” details areas in which the practitioner needs to exercise caution.
Deep Tissue Massage presents a wealth of information in a way the therapist can immediately utilize. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and includes a preface to the new edition, a foreword, an index, a Suggested Reading list, and extended sections on integrating deep-tissue massage into bodywork practice and the psychology of treating injuries.
Customer Reviews:
A must have..................2007-09-05
Anyone interested in therapeutic massage can benifit heavily from this manual, written with experience, wisdom and love. Not only is the anatomy information great, there are excellent practical techniques, as well as some of the best "Deep Tissue Philosophy" on applying it to a successfull practice. I have been a practicing massage therapist for over a dozen years, as well as teaching Progressive Deep Tissue classes across Southern California, and recommend this book to my students as the best book on the subject they could invest in. Art is the man!
A Classic Improved.......2007-06-10
While the text hasn't changed much, this new edition is a significant improvement. The photos and drawings are much clearer, the layout and design is livelier, even the paper is brighter. And this new edition includes an index and is key referenced to the DVD. While the book is written by a practitioner for practitioners, its descriptions are so clear that anyone interested in the subject can learn a lot about deep tissue massage.
New edition is due June 5.......2007-04-30
You may want to wait for the new edition.
Good book!.......2007-03-25
If you are a professional MT, I would recommend this book to get some deep tissue pointers and ways to save your body. Think I might get the DVD series too!
Good refresher for recent massage graduates.......2007-03-09
I recently became a Certified Massage Therapist. I had great classes in Deep Tissue technique, but did not receive a visual guide as a text. Although it may not be the most practical guide for those of us who work in salons (a lot of the work is shown in a side-lying position), it is an excellent review for those who are going to work in a clinical setting.

Acupuncture patients who want the nitty-gritty of such needling techniques as depth, placement, and needle type should read The Art of Acupuncture Techniques. It's unique historical perspective preserves theoretical concepts that haven't been taught in China since the Cultural Revolution. The book could stand a glossary, as the Chinese terms for ailments can be a bit confusing, but if you really want to know what's going on during treatment, whether you're seeking relief from a skin condition, angina, or infertility, it's right on target.

Not a self-help book.......2007-04-11
Be forewarned--this book doesn't contain a single illustration! If you were looking to learn about acupressure points to relieve some of your own ailments, you'd probably prefer Acupressure's Potent Points by Michael Reed Gach. That's what I got instead after returning this book.
Please Re-Read Pericardium-6, "The Wild Card".......2005-05-28
This is the clearest text I have found on Chinese Medicine. So many of the large volume texts require an experienced eye to sift through and discern what is clinically useful and what is merely interesting information of no clinical use. In Art of Acupuncture Techniques everything appears to be useful. Although the book is not large in size, it is large in the author's knowledge of medicine, reflected in its comprehensible use of language and succinct presentation, containing more clinically applicable concepts than many other books.
After reading the comment from Robert Chu's student (see other reviews), I decided to reread the chapter on Neiguan, "the wild card". It seems that this was an off the cuff remark, clearly made by someone who heard the title, but had not read the chapter, and consequently the comment was not explored with an open mind by the student. The chapter begins by explaining how and why and the circumstances in which Neiguan may be referred to as a wild card. Then clearly explains the dynamic this point plays in acupuncture prescriptions. Clear-cut physiological links are mapped out, showing how and why adding this point can affect countless conditions. Also, the numerous relationships Neiguan has with other organs, meridians, and systems are included. Having a chapter dedicated to this point demonstrates its importance. The chapter ends with 58 prescriptions that include Neiguan. Intelligibly demonstrating a deep understanding of Neiguan's Physiologic Dynamic. I have tried many of these and have been amazed by my patients' feedback. The results continue to be remarkable.
I recommend this book to anyone studying and/or practicing acupuncture. As for me, I keep coming back to it, discovering new ideas and deepening those I have already explored. Additionally, the writing style seems to induce a certain way of thinking that expands my understanding in all areas of Chinese medicine, but most importantly in the clinic when I'm standing over a patient about to insert a needle (when it really matters). Thank-You for this outstanding text!
simple book from a brilliant doctor.......2005-05-20
I took johns' acupuncture techniques class in SF last year. Among all the teachers and doctors I have known, johns has the deepest knowledge of acupuncture, and more importantly, the greatest amount of skill hands down. Watching his technique makes you understand how little knowledge and skill has been passed on in the post-communist "traditional" chinese medicine era. Although its difficult to learn the correct technique through a book alone, the basic principles and guidelines are clearly depicted.
Also, in regards to the robert chu comment about Neiguan being a wildcard - if you read the chapter, it is clear that johns has a thorough understanding of what the point can do. he only calls it a wildcard to stress its importance.
Johns's deep understanding of medicine comes through pages.......2003-03-06
Robert Johns has a knack for being able to boil complex concepts down into simple, understandable language without missing any pertitent information. This text is easy to follow and contains important information. All the information in this book comes from his own clinical practice, so it's only here because the perscriptions actually work for him today, not becasue he read it in some ancient text.
Robert Johns's deep understanding of chinese medicine comes through as you read the pages of his book.
And, if you're a student of acupuncture and will be taking the state board exam in california, note that this book is on the recommmended reading list.
For those taking the CA state board..........2003-01-25
This is a great book, but contains lots of point functions and empirical indications found nowhere else. You could get stumped if you don't know them. Lots of needle technique... I'm glad this one is on the list, because it means eventually we may be able to get rid of "Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion"!
I have to throw in a comment from one of my teachers... Robert Johns calls P6 (Neiguan) the 'wildcard' and says that it can be added to any treatment for increased effectiveness. My teacher, Robert Chu, laughed at that and said, "Wildcard... that means you don't really understand what it does!"

Product Description
Many people think of natural healing as a somewhat radical or even mystical alternative to medical care. But natural healing means more than herbs, vitamins and exercises; it involves a variety of drugless therapies that are beginning to enjoy wide success, such as meditation, acupuncture and hypnosis. Medical practice aims for the quick cure, by means of introducing substances or instruments into the body which are highly antagonistic to whatever is causing the disease. Natural healing takes a slower, more organic approach. It recognizes that the human body is superbly equipped to resist disease and heal injuries. When illness strikes, its first instinct is to strengthen these inherent healing mechanisms. This book provides detailed, down-to-earth explanations of both the theories and the practical applications of natural healing, from the most ancient techniques to the latest discoveries.
Book Description
The by-now widely known cult artist Raymond Pettibon was first recognized outside of the art scene for creating flyers, concert posters and album covers for the independent record label SST, owned by his brother, Greg Ginn. But he soon distanced himself from the Californian hardcore punk scene and developed, sometimes in books, sometimes on single sheets, his "Tragedie humaine," which has continued to chip away at America's understanding of itself, deconstructing popular myths in a disturbing connection of image and text, for many decades now. Pettibon, whose work also includes several feature films and animation works, is a precise artistic observer of the American pop cultural milieux. He finds inspiration in the comic style of Milton Caniff and John Kirby, in 1930s and 40s design, and in the flower-power dreams of later decades, which he gleefully transforms into scenes of bloody massacre. His use of iconic superheroes and super-villains (Batman, Superman, Jesus, Stalin, Charles Manson) as well as several key recurring motifs (trains, penises, surfers, baseball players), in endless variation, creates a visual "remix" as it were. In these black-and-white drawings, which occasionally use red bullet wounds for contrast; in later, color-intensive work, he discovers an enigmatic, cannibalistic world, whose grotesque distortion reveals hidden truths about our own, without completely exposing its secrets. Whatever It Is You're Looking For, You Won't Find It Here includes more than 500 drawings and documentation of a 50-foot long mural, alongside an interview with the artist and two essays.

Book Description
Mies van der Rohe in a steel and glass building smoking a cigar - this historical photograph of the world-famous architect fascinated and intrigued Richard Daza so much that he painstakingly researched the events surrounding it. He takes the reader step by step through all the architectonic and personal details in the photograph, interpreting and analysing them. With the tension of a thriller, he examines the evidence, makes deductions and gradually brings to light elements of Mies' biography, enhanced by attractive sequences of illustrations. From this one photograph the author draws a skillful picture of Mies - the architecture, the man and his character. In cooperation with Actar, Barcelona
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book.......2003-04-22
This book is a jewel. Ricardo Daza examines a picture asking himself where is Mies in the Crown Hall? The deductive process allows us to know who was Mies Van der Rohe and how he thought on Architecture.
Do not less pass the opportunity and buy this book. Wonderful.
Buscando a Mies.......2003-02-04
As architect I highly recommend this book. And as a friend of Ricardo I have been witness of all the Sherlock Holmesque deductions, presumptions and findings. Leaded by Master Pep Quetglas in Barcelona's Escuela Tecnica de Arquitectura, 'Looking for Mies' is surrounded by a Walter Benjamin theory about the spirit of history its interpretation and how not follow the "History of the Lords" printed in megalomaniac books. This time, one photograph could be the excuse to review a lot of singularities of architect's behavior and his exceptional work.
Using the facts in a supossed defined place a photo was taken. Through the photographer's eye, our position sense and deductional processes will help us to find no only where was Mies in a building, but a beautiful methodology inspired by John Berger that give to us the opportunity to perform how Mies and his architecture want to be watched and experienced.
This work would be the first step of a PHD thesis about another one grand: Le Corbusier. Only have to say is Ricardo Daza is a colombian talent to keep eye forward.
