Good Book for Novice Civil War Diary Readers.......2004-08-03
Avid civil war women's diary readers may want to take a pass on this book. While Ms. McKinely is definitely a fiesty southern sympathizer with a Union heritage, I didn't find this book to present anything new or that much more interesting than other southern women's diary.
What draws me to diaries is not only the historical value of the diaries but the chance to become initimately involved in the lives of these women and their families. Whether it be the editing, Ms. McKinely's writing style or the sparse details of her background, I didn't connect with Ms. McKinely. In my opinion, the best diaries are those that have left me wanting to know more, wishing that the diary hadn't ended and feeling as though I know more about the writer and the plight of civil war women then when I started. From that standpoint, the book fell short.
That being said, I would recommend the book to someone who hasn't read any or only a few diaries. Ms. McKinely's fiestiness is typical of women in the south and much of what she goes through is similar to other women across the south.
Brings to life the travails of living under Union occupation.......2001-11-13
Historian Gordon Cotton's From The Pen Of A She-Rebel: The Civil War Diary Of Emilie Riley McKinly is the fascinating and informative story of Ms. McKinly, told in her own words, as she and her rural Southern neighbors witnessed the depredations of the Civil War. What made Ms. McKinly unique was that she was a Yankee by background, yet she personally embodied deep sympathy for her Confederate neighbors. Extensively annotated vignettes bring to life the travails of living under Union occupation, and paint a vivid picture of a corner of America that was uprooted and changed forever by the surge of history. An epilogue provides as much historical closure as is available concerning Ms. McKinly and her neighbors after the war. From The Pen Of A She-Rebel is a unique and welcome addition to the growing body of Civil War literature available for readers and students today.

Book Description
Eighteen years ago Joan Grady-Fitchett was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease. Rejecting her doctors prognosis, Grady-Fitchett decided to live life to the fullest, and drew strength from her spiritual center, which uplifted her on the good days and sustained her through the bad. Grady-Fitchetts unique literary voice makes this illness and its effects understandable.
Customer Reviews:
Flying Lessons-Parkinsons Disease.......1999-12-24
I found this book to be inspiring for anyone suffering from Parkinsons. Joan Grady-Fitchett the author has done an excellent job of relating to the reader the gamut of emotions involved in the diagnosis of Parkinsons. Her strong mental attitude and determination should inspire others to do the same. The book also gives important information on doctors to contact and the success and failure of her medications and treatments.
An enjoyable informative human interest writing........1999-04-06
Fighting the challanges of Parkinson's Disease, sometimes winning, sometimes losing; along with general living experiences made this book an informative and enjoyable read for me. However, it ended too soon. Did she have the surgery and what were the results?
You'll cry & laugh--a Horse Whisperer tragedy, in her body........1998-08-24
An amazing woman fights the little and big things that are no longer familiar. This disease, this invader, is slowing crashing her body. All she has left is spirit and persistence, but these are powerful. Joan's writing is tight and moving. It takes you along with her from the top of success in professional modeling. From anger. Through realization and fear. Through lovers and pain, and to rest of her life. The reader will come away a little smarter, a lot braver, and a little less a victim in their own life.

Customer Reviews:
Very thorough, informative, but needs more information on diet and nutrition.......2007-03-20
I really liked the author's straightforward style, and I found in it a wealth of information about IBD. I thought though, that the chapter on
diet and nutrition was lacking. I thought the author did a better job of
explaining the role of nutrition than my doctor did, but he said that Ulcerative Colitis has nothing to do with diet, which seems to be the prevailing attitude with many doctors (GI or otherwise) I was surprised that the author did not mention more about special diets, esp. The Specific Carbohydrate diet or at least a gluten-free diet. When I was diagnosed, I had to research and pour over books and the Internet to find
answers to my questions. The author states to use caution with info. on the internet, and of course you need to use common sense, but the internet
was the place I found The Specific Carbohydrate Diet by Elaine Gottschalk,
and after trying everything the doctor ordered (and not getting much relief) I tried the Specific Carbohydrate Diet out of desperation, and
it has been SO great, I got my energy back, and have been steadily and
consistently improving to the point where I have been relapsing less often ( it used to be all the time) and I feel like my life was given back to me! So, this long story of mine is to let you newly diagnosed out there know-yes, this is a very thorough book, but it doesn't have everything in it, I would highly recommend buying "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" by Elaine Gottschall, to go with it-it will be more than worth it.
Very informative.......2007-03-05
I bought this book when diagnosed with UC and it really helped to take the fear out of the situation. When you suffer from an incurable disease you can at first feel overwhelmed but this book answers pretty much all the questions you might ask. My only reservation is that it doesn't mention the Specific Carbohydrate Diet which some people, including myself, have found extremely useful for treating IBD. Mention of the SCD would be a useful addition for any later edition.
I liked it.......2006-11-07
I thought the book has some good info in it but It was not what I was looking for. I wanted to know the basics ,what is this what can I expect and what to do. I didn't find that.
1st year Crohn's Disease review.......2006-07-09
I thought this book was very interesting and a very good read. It was real easy to understand and the first person perspective kept me reading page after page.
What happens when you are told you have Crohn's.......2006-01-30
Doctors cannot tell it all in a few meetings, there is just too much to take in with this very sad disorder which has no cure. This book will make sense, well organized, a day and month at a time. What treatment modalities are available, included are the side effects of treatment. This book also give you hope, but there is no cure.
Excellent book.

Customer Reviews:
It's A Great Book!.......2006-07-30
I am new at making cards and have purchased several books on
the subject but, this book by far is the very best written
and I just love all the ideas in it.
Not Thrilled.......2006-03-24
I thought this would give me some excellent ideas for card making. This book is "ok" at best. In order to make a lot of the cards in the book, I would be going way over and above using materials that I don't even have. It would be nice if you could see one or two pages of a book before purchasing it to make a better buying decision.
Broad variety and detailed instructions.......2005-08-14
I work with email 10 hours a day but I always loved sending and receiving handwritten letters. When I first came to the US I was quite impressed with the variety of ready to use cards you can buy here.
After living here for a couple of years I guess I moved on to the next level and wanted to give my letters/b-d cards etc. an even more personal touch.
This collection of cards and tags from 'Better Homes and Gardens' was exactly what I was looking for. I am pretty much a novice at making my own cards (no previous scrap booking experience) so I needed fairly detailed instructions on how to create a certain look, use embellishments, eyelets etc. and this is what you can find in this book - detailed list of materials/tools you need (sources are listed in the back of the book) and easy to follow instructions.
The designs cover a wide range of styles and levels of complexity and will sure make your own creative juices flow (I love to work out designs with clay and left over yarns from my knitting projects).
I also liked the fact that the authors don't condemn the use of 'ready to use' pieces from the craft store in your designs.
An additional benefit is that templates are provided throughout the book and I loved the quotes that you can find on each page.
I recommend this book to every beginner in card making and I believe that even more advanced levels might find some inspiration from these designs.
My family and friends now appreciate my letters with this additional personal touch even more and I found a new way to be a little creative.
Enjoy!
Card projects for all levels and tastes -- excellent!.......2004-03-12
Ever find yourself wanting to put more of an individual touch on your Christmas cards? Do readymade cards from the store seem a little too "canned" -- or maybe just boring? Perhaps the email invites to your friend's shower got buried with all the junkmail and you need something that will get people's attention. You don't want to spend all day on it, but there must be some way to rev up your cards or just get beyond the generic, fake-sentimentality that has become the greeting card industry.
Better Homes and Gardens has compiled a great resource here for the crafter who wants to send something other than the Hallmark standard-issue greeting cards and invitations. Handmade Greetings for All Occasions really does cover most possible situations that call for cards (except for St. Patrick's day - wait, I never sent cards for St. Patty's day anyway!). True to the style of their magazine publication, BH&G's designs are contemporary, fun, tongue-in-cheek, cute, elegant, whimsical, classy, lovely, or any sort of appropriate mode you could ask for; and without exception they stand out. The ones that caught my eye, for example:
A very girly purse-shaped card with an actual Velcro closure (perfect for my sister's birthday)
A valentine's card with beginner-level quilling design all over the heart shape - easy and elegant!
Autumn greeting cards with embossed papers and gilded leaves - rich looking, but fast to assemble
Colorful birthday cards with candle detailing baked from clay
Christmas greetings with beaded motifs and appliqués.
Stamp-embossed wedding card in vellum and silver; not exactly revolutionary, but simply lovely.
The techniques/materials used to make the cards range all over the craft world today, but are applied with a light touch (I wish I had room to name them all in this review). For instance, a few of the projects call for stamps, others show you how to make accents with clay, wires, beads, botanicals, ribbons...the familiar array of skills to paper crafters and scrapbookers, but explained and illustrated at the beginner level for the rest of us. If you are not already a crafter, you will have to make some initial investment in tools and materials to get started with most of these projects. You will get a brief exposure to all different kinds of paper crafts being used today, and maybe come away with a new hobby or two. In my case though I had a lot of tools floating about because I scrapbook.
I have looked at other card making books and find that often, the involvement or the investment is either too much for my purposes (such as making 40 invites for that baby shower) or so simplistic/standard that you may as well not bother wasting your time with handmades. HGFAO strikes just the right balance, so that the crafter can mass produce many of the projects for larger mailings or spend more time embellishing custom cards that become keepsakes. Let me reassure you that none of these projects look mass produced though. You will get lots of credit from your friends and family for being the artist who took the time to make it especially for them.

Book Description
Viewing adolescence in the context of the family, The Seven-Year Stretch is the first book to show parents how and why some teenagers end up well adjusted while others end up in trouble. Why are some teens impulsive rule-breakers, while others seem more mindful of right and wrong? Why do some turn to drugs and alcohol regularly, while others experiment only on occasion? Why are some families constantly battling, while others have only minor conflicts? How can parents distinguish between normal rebellion and deeper problems? In this book, Laura Kastner, Ph.D., and Jennifer Wyatt, Ph.D., introduce us to a range of families---from thriving to struggling---and explain how their behavior patterns, past and present, affect the teenager's development. Garnered from Dr. Kastner's clinical and teaching experience, these true-to-life stories and dialogues illustrate the impact of such factors as clashing parenting styles, the temperaments of parents and children, parents' own unresolved issues, marital dynamics, and circumstances such as divorce, financial stress, and cultural differences. With optimism and creativity, the authors explain how parents can harness their family strengths to face today's challenges for adolescents. They look beyond the "shoulds," describing what different parenting approaches look like and sound like in action. Readers of the best early child-rearing texts of the times, from T. Berry Brazelton to Selma Fraiberg, will find The Seven-Year Stretch an essential guide to the passage throught the next stage---adolescence.
Customer Reviews:
Bears more than one readig.......2003-02-03
Dr. Kastner's style is very down-to-earth yet transmits concentrated, dense information/wisdom that parents probably need to read more than once to fully absorb. The one disappointment is the lack of an index. As I put down the book and later picked it up to review, I always found myself going to the index and finding there was none. The material would be more accessible if an index were added, as the table of contents isn't sufficiently detailed to help locate very specific points.
Bingo!.......2000-09-14
I'm an auntie of a 12 year old neice and a 10 year old nephew. This is the first book I've read on the mystery of adolesence and it was exactly what I was looking for. Clear, easy to understand, doable ideas and logic for keeping these tough relationships on track. Great anticdotes that remind you how painful it was to be that age - what you were thinking about. Great examples, concise, and hopeful - a great read. I especially enjoyed the chapter on "launching" - who knew there were so many issues, so much to consider, when pushing a child out of the nest SUCCESSFULLY say, to college?
The Seven Year Stretch.......2000-05-01
I picked up this book a few weeks ago - my two daughters are twelve and fourteen. I could not put it down. Every page is applicable to our lives. I felt reassured that my girls are very normal, and that I am doing okay. Situations from real-life 'positive' family interactions remind me of where I can improve in my communication as a parent. Lessons are realistic, not restricted to an ideal world, or unattainable in our chaotic, busy household. The book is kept in the 'reference ' section of our library, and as issues arise, I turn to the Table of Contents to find the chapter pertaining to my quandry - sexuality, social issues with peers. I have shown excerpts to my older daughter, and we laugh together, seeing ourselves, and finding solutions agreeable to us both. My only complaint is that the book is only 300 pages - we have more questions with which I am sure the authors could offer insight. Bottom Line -- This book is real life, practical, helpful.

The book she brought was actually the book written in english and translated to German. I was delighted! This caused me to reread the english and follow along, as best I could, with the german text. What a pleasure and an underscore to how multitalented and unenjoyed Durer is. From a precocious 12 year old {doing one of the first recognized self portaits} to a traveller of the world, seeker of perspective truth and with humor at his side {read his letters to his friend Pirckhiemer}. Book Description
The Story of Ireland, originally intended as a chronicle of a single family, reads like a complete panorama of the country's social and religious history. Clearly recounting the causes for and the nature of centuries of discord between England and Ireland, it provides an authentic feel of Irish life exploring the long history of an ancient Irish family.
William Magan descends directly from one of the oldest Irish royal houses, the O'Conors of Connaught. The Magan family, whose ancestral home is close to the geographical center of Ireland, split into Catholic and Protestant branches as recently as the eighteenth century.
The Story of Ireland was first published in 1983 as Umma More. This completely updated edition offers a new generation of readers an absorbing and impartial account of the passage of an old Celtic family through two thousand years of Irish history, providing insights into both the country and its people and how the English and Irish have regarded each other over the centuries.

History Comes Alive.......2000-03-19
This book traces an ancient Irish family from the mists of time into the 20th century. It shows the impact of historical events on a family and its fortunes. The author, I understand, is in his nineties and grew up in Ireland. So he saw and experienced some of the old ways and knows firsthand many of the recent changes. A charming and interesting book.
