I like this book. If you are interested in bead crochet ropes, I would recomment it. I especially like the bangle bracelet patterns. However, the first project for beginners is all one color beads. This is almost impossible for beginners. Mark the beginning of a round with a different colored bead, or use a sequence of colors. YOu could also use the beading sequence from the second project with the larger beads from the first project. Also, the author recommends using crochet cotton for the thread. This stuff frays and tangles. To save your sanity, go to a bead store and buy something specifically recommended for beading. There are no diagrams to go with the instructions. I could have used diagrams.

I loved this book, I felt like I learned so much from it. The tutorials are very easy to follow and will have you making a beaded crochet rope quickly. I am an old crocheter but even I learned a few things about how to do bead crochet. If you are wanting to learn this is an excellent book to learn with.

I've looked at several books on bead crochet and even bought some of them but this is by far the best book I have on bead crochet. I've made several of the patterns now and each one has worked out perfectly. Ms. Lehman really knows her subject and how to teach it. Excellent book!

This is a great book with really nice patterns. The book has some good tips and tells things to watch for if you are a beginner. It also tells the best way to fix your mistakes. I am a beginner and I got alot of help from this book

I have been pruning trees for 30 years (wow), and this is definately the best single source for technical information, and ideas, but it's especially good for its depth & breadth of coverage: a great variety of tree/vine/rose specimens and treatments. The drawings, pictures, sketches are the best I've seen in one presentation. These guys have done it right -- a first class book for the serious gardener!

Reference pays for itself and is a joy!.......2001-04-13

This book may seem an extravagance, especially if you have the wonderful "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques" (1998), by Tracy DiSabato-Aust, but it is the perfect reference that pays for itself over the years. In contrast to the plant list in the DiSabato-Aust book, this book has full color pix of all plants (perennials & shrubs). The index is useful!

It teaches you to recognize specific plant forms to which you apply the 9 pruning techniques that cover all bases. This book makes it simple to prune any plant, and the other book will tell you that almost all plants benefit from pruning.

As an example, red-twig (or yellow-twig) dogwood should be pruned by completely taking out the oldest 1/3 of branches each year in late winter. This keeps color strong and the bush uncrowded.

Lavender should have 1/3 of last year's new growth pruned off at end of winter, and you have to start this when the plant is young. (I didn't, and you can kill it by cutting back to hard wood.)

It also tells you the difference among all the types of roses (critical, because some bloom on second-year wood) in a 6-pg section copiously illustrated.

I expect that the new version deals with new plants, but have not seen it.

I recently moved into a house with a yard and a variety of trees, vines, and Roses. I have read large gardening references before in attempts to prune planter box trees and gardens, but never walked away with the sense that I could actually prune and train my plants successfully. This book began with definitions of terminology, tool selection, and provided clear text and multiple helpful drawings and pictures all geared towards the intelligent adult. It addreses the unique properties of the various fruit trees, rose bushes, vines, and shrubs, and gives advice as to when to hire and how to choose an arborist. It helped me understand the impact of pruning and has made me a more educated 'tree' observer.

I bought this book after I offered to throw a baby shower for a good friend. I'd never thrown a baby shower before, and I didn't know how to start planning one. After reading the previous review (which obviously refers to an earlier edition), I agree that the book is geared toward beginners, which was just what I needed. I was looking for something straight forward that would show me how to easily throw a fun party that has all the necessary baby-shower requirements, yet would not be overwhelming. This book offers all that and more: inviting party themes that seem simple to pull off, games that didn't drive my guests away, and tasty recipes--lots of recipes.(In fact, perhaps too many recipes. I stuck with the simpler-sounding ones, and they turned out very nicely. And let's face it: food is quite an attraction at these affairs!)My friend loved the shower, I didn't break a sweat planning it, and those two reasons are why this book is worth buying.

Contrary to the title, this is NOT the best baby shower book I've ever read, although it isn't bad. There's a little bit of everything in this book: a handfull of recipies, some ideas for inexpensive shower themes, making your own ivitations, very limited games. There are some interesting tidbits on folklore and traditions around the world that's very good and worth reading the book for. There is also a section on gift ideas and a checklist for the new mom's needs. All in all, this book is a decent place to start, but not sufficient in planning the entire party if you want to make it an all-out occasion

Fascinating.......2001-04-06

A fascinating book on an extraordinary life. Alice Pike Barney (1857-1928) was an artist of considerable talent, a socialite with considerable conscience. She was loved by Henry Morton Stanley, but spurned him. She married unhappily twice, but flourished as a widow and divorcee. Her Studio House and Sylvan Theater still grace Washington, but she left for Hollywood in the 1920s and died there. Jean Kling's book has good prints of her art, an insightful account of her life. I recommend it.
