This was the real destroyer war in the Pacific.......2000-09-16
Although some of the love letters become repetitive, this book captures better than anything the true nature of the destroyer war in the Pacific against Japan. The commentary gets to the point of the hard work and anonymous sacrifice of the common enlisted man in the desperate fight against Japan. The final letter written by Yeoman Raines, and delivered to his wife after his death, is one of the most wrenching and moving literary expressions to come from this war.
Real life on a tin can (destroyer) in the South Pacific........1997-09-23
Orvill Raines was my friend. We were together
from the time the ship was commissioned 4/3/44
until he died on April 6, 1945 at Okinawa.
Ray Ellen (his wife) kept these letters and when
I first contacted her in 1990 she mentioned them
to me and offered them to the HOWORTH VETS. We published them at our own expense.
Williams McBride took the War Diary AND
Letters/Memories and completed the manuscript
that became Good Night Officially.
After our Memorial Service aboard the USS
Kidd in Baton Rouge, I escorted her around
the ship and was able to answer all the questions that she had, had down thru the
years.
It made it possible. It made it worth while

Book Description
Ruth Candler Lovett, great-granddaughter of the founder of The Coca-Cola Company, came to adulthood in a place of privilege in 1950s Atlanta. In 1964, at the age of 29, she died of breast cancer, leaving behind three small children. Thirty years later, her youngest child sets out to discover the mother he never knew. In this moving portrait of a mother discovered, Lovett finds the words to fill the silence left by Ruth's death and takes the reader on an emotionally powerful journey which celebrates life even in the face of death. Dr. Maya Angelou called this book "tender and sensitive and true," and Bret Lott (author of Jewel) says "Lovett's poignant, powerful, moving memoir is an examination of love and loss so acute it has taken his life thus far to understand its impact."
Customer Reviews:
Great book for your bookclub.......2000-08-09
The host for the bookclub I'm in, choose this book as our 'read' for last month. We all enjoyed it, but for different reasons. I enjoyed reading about the information about his mother that Mr. Lovett was presented with & were it came from. My friend Pat has been inspired to search out information about her birth mother. Not to only find out what her birth mother was like, but to get health records & etc. We all were impressed that this very touching book was written by a man. How wonderful to read something this sensitive that is written by the gender whom usually prides themselves to be 'tough as nails'. We all agree that sensitive men are the best! We all live in a small town (Kernersville) that is located about 10 miles from Winston-Salem. We are planning to go see if we can find the house that he grew up in next time we are in W-S. Authors can have 'groupies' too!
The Power of a Parent's Love.......2000-03-16
This book deserves to be a real "sleeper" hit -- it's a remarkable read, both for its content and its honest presentation. The story of the author's quest to "know" the mother he never really knew starts off as a modern, suburban detective story of sorts, and along the way becomes something much more profound. The author's direct, no-nonsense narrative makes you feel like you're at his side for each new revelation. Some discoveries made me smile and nod with recognition of similarities to my own family, and some left me much more deeply moved; I think anyone who reads this book will have the same experience. This book would probably be a great gift for someone in your own family.
Love, Ruth.......2000-02-29
An engrossing account of a young man's quest to know the mother he lost to cancer at the age of two. He searchs for his mother through stories of friends and relatives, through official documents and medical records, through mementos and snippets of information gleaned from old correspondence. Charles Lovett's story of this journey will touch a place in all of us. It is a story of profound loss and the courage to face that loss and come out on the other side, whole and with a peaceful heart.
Love, Ruth.......2000-02-23
Love, Ruth was a great read! It not only touched me and made me re-examine my relationships with both my parents and my children, but it was well written and compelling-a real page turner. It tells the story of the author's clever search for information about his dead mother and how that search leads him to a closer relationship with his daughter. I would highy recommend it to other readers! - Elizabeth Blakeman, Greensboro,NC

Good useful information, wanders a bit though........2007-09-11
The author has this chatty style of writing, a bit disorganzied, if you ask me, but the information is very useful, and I read and re read many parts of the book. I have had frequent flarups of my psoratic arthritis lately, and the advise in the book has lead me to treatments that have helped me onto the road to recovery.
Gout is a form of Arthritis too!!.......2007-02-24
This book is amazing. I followed the plan and my Gout, the constant pain in my legs and tendonitus all went away within a month. I highly recommend this book no matter what form of Arthritus you have. JUST DO IT! It will not only change your life but give you your life back.
How to Eat Away Arthritis .......2007-02-04
I think this is a great book as it has a lot of good information regarding food intolerances that results in Arthritis and Pain, which I suspected certain foods as a contributing factor and then found this book which confirmed it for me. I liked it so much, I bought three copies to give to my ailing Arthritic Brothers.
eat for arthritis.......2007-01-12
My wife started right away to eliminate some of the triggers that were mentioned in the book. She thought it was a quick read and gave good information.
Good contents but not well laid out.......2006-11-25
The book has excellent information on how to eat, how to fast your way to health, etc.
It's just a pity that the author didn't get assistance with the layout of the book. I really struggled my way through it and also struggle to find information that I want to refer back to. The layout needs to be a whole lot more systematic and logical.

My "go to" cookbook.......2007-06-29
I have used this cookbook for years. I also use her original cookbook,Jane Brody's Good Food Book. The recipes in both are easy and delicious. Many of us have forgotten how good all those healthy carbs can be. Brody reminds us. Whenever I don't know what to prepare for dinner, I pick up one of these two books. I always find something tasty and healthy. Morrison's Minestrone and Jane's Everyday Vinaigrette are two of my favorite recipes.
Jane Brody's Good Food Gourmet: Recipes and Menus.......2001-09-09
I am a tremendous fan of all Jane's cookbooks and this one is my all-time favorite. Not only are the recipes easy to follow and delicious, they also really do make enough to entertain friends and family. I have made many of the recipes in this cookbook and many have become family standards. Friends always ask me for the recipe when I cook from Jane's book, and many of these recipes are now standards for their families too! Last, I will add that its easy to be a good cook with Jane Brody!
Great Cookbook!.......1999-11-29
This is an excellent cookbook! Out of the 25 or so cookbooks on my shelf I can honestly say that Jane Brody's book has been used the most. The recipes are low in fat and very tasty. Many may be prepared in advance. The only negative is that Brody does not provide the reader with number of calories or nutritional information for the recipes.
Wonderful! Recipes to excite the palate & nourish the body!.......1999-01-05
This book taught me to cook! I was bored with my other cookbooks, always looking for recipes but too timid to try ones with "scary" ingredients like eggplant, tofu, canned salmon, dried beans, etc. Then I discovered this book, and became inspired by Jane Brody's encouraging descriptions of various dishes ("Lovely to look at and lovely to savor!"), along with comforting recommendations from her tasters ("Every taster begged for the recipe..."). I decided to go for it!
Before long, I was turning out some of the most delicious, interesting, healthful meals I've ever enjoyed! Without even trying, my husband and I both lost weight, eating more veggies & less meat-- with no loss of taste! It seems whenever I make a Jane Brody dish for someone, they always ask for the recipe...and they NEVER suspect they've eaten "health food."
Best of all, I've learned so much about cooking! Jane's recipes showed me how to put together a healthy, exquisite meal using beans, rice or pasta as a base that's then fleshed out with veggies and flavored with former no-no's like red meat, sour cream, cheese, etc. If you're a creative cook who loves to explore new tastes & techniques, you'll love Jane Brody. Alternately, if you're a new cook who'd like to branch out to gourmet fare, Jane Brody's a great place to start.
However, if you're looking for an easy cookbook to feed a family of finicky eaters simple American meals like meatloaf & mac 'n cheese, "The Good Food Gourmet" is probably a bit too intense for you. Come back when the kids get older!

The book is easy to read and a wealth of information about the mule. Alot of the history of the mule. The author has researched her subject well. A very enjoyable book
Must reading for mule lovers.......1998-09-15
This is an extremely insightful look at mules and their human companions. The author's style is easy to read. My own mules have suggested that she must be part mule to understand them so well. I plan to give this book as Christmas gifts this year! I was definitely not disappointed
Book Description
Alden Amos shares his deep knowledge of wheel mechanics, spinning fibers, wheel construction, and yarn, as well as a wealth of spinning history and traditions. Every aspect of handspinning is explored, including dissolving lanolin, washing fleece, rotating wheel position, and choosing types of wool. Also discussed are various hand positions, which can result in everything from smooth, fine thread to funky, bulky yarn.
Customer Reviews:
Not For Complete Beginners.......2007-01-17
This book should be read with a critical eye. Some of the information in it is flat-out wrong. One example (not the only one by far, but a potentially disastrous one) is that Mr. Amos recommends winding off a drop spindle by hanging it from the ceiling and then routing the yarn down to a chair and through the top rail of the back, so that the yarn pulls off the end of the spindle. Please do not do this. Every time the yarn comes off the spindle tip, a twist will be added or removed, depending on how you've wound the yarn. This is the same principle that a Great Wheel works on. On some yarns, the extra or reduced twist won't matter. On others, it can either unspin it until it drifts apart, or twist it until it starts kinking. At the very least, winding off the end is inviting tangles and frustration. Drop spindles are best wound off from the side.
Besides incorrect information, there are also a number of omissions in the book. My personal favorite (again, not the only example by far) is when Mr. Amos is discussing umbrella swifts. He states that plans to build one are included later in the book. The book has no plans for any yarn swift, umbrella or otherwise.
The book is poorly laid out. Information on equipment is spread between 3 or 4 places at least. Similar with discussion of twist and related properties. On the other hand, the break between chapter 4 (Determining Character of Yarn) and chapter 5 (Accurate Measurements) seems completely arbitrary. Mr. Amos also has an annoying, and perhaps unethical, habit of plugging his own products -- without noting that they are his. He also often goes out of his way to avoid mentioning a competitor by name (i.e. referring to "a certain nearly ubiquitous New Zealand manufacturer" instead of using the name Ashford), UNLESS he is criticizing said competitor. Then he'll drop the competitor's name with no trouble whatsoever. I was also less than impressed when he spent the better part of two pages complaining about specific previous customers.
This is not to say that the book has no good information. It is worth reading if a spinner has enough experience or has read enough other material to be able to judge the value of each bit of information. It has the best explanation of a long draw I've seen yet, and his idea of storage bobbins is so brilliant and yet so obvious that I'm shocked it isn't standard practice. I don't think the book is worth owning, however, because of the omissions and errors. And, of course, nothing in the book should be taken at face value. See if your library has a copy, and judge for yourself before you buy a copy.
It covers just about everything.......2007-01-03
Yes, he is opinionated. But the man does have a sense of humor and can laugh at himself. This is a reference book, not necessarily easy armchair reading. I found myself with tools in hand and my nose in the book on more than one occasion and when I followed his advice step-by-step, it worked! The math, quite frankly, at first intimidated me, but again, when I was working on an actual project and needed the math guidance, I turned to this book. I'm hoping to take this book down to our local blacksmith shop (Colonial period re-enactors and a smithing guild) and see if they will make me a set of combs following Amos' directions.
Wonderful, a delight to read!.......2006-10-16
I completely disagree with 'belacane "the cashmere cat"'. This book is just unbelievable detailed with all kinds of interesting info. He even tells you how to make the soap that you wash your wool with (if you are so inclined). After having read so many reviews that said he was opinionated, well the cover of the book has the word OPINION on it, and the introduction he admits he can at times be hard headed after years and years of his way working. However the how-to's are wonderful!
I was told by a local sheep farm that you can place the cleaned wool in the washing machine on the spin cycle (no agitation) and you can dry the wool fast this way. Well he even mentions it in the book and basically says 'research it and try at your own discretion' so while he clearly would never do it, he didn't even have to mention it, but he did because it's something other people may have success with.
I find him a delight to read, there is no other single book with all this wonderful information in it. You can tell Alden loves his craft. I am very much enjoying reading it and I am about 40 pages in.
Informative and Interesting.......2006-09-29
I am a beginning spinner, trying to learn how to work the wheel to get the different kinds of yarn I want. Admittedly, much of Amos's book is technical, with mathematical equations that are more daunting than anything else, but there is an astounding array of knowledge, that, while not directly helpful to my goals is fascinating, nonetheless. So far (I'm up to chapter 5) I've learned a few techniques that have helped to craft my spinning into something more advanced than bumbling, but more than that, the book has sparked my further interest into the world of spinning. For example, I don't plan on growing, harvesting and preparing flax for spinnng, but I was fascinated with learning about the process.
All in all, a great read.
The Alden Amos Big Book of Handspinning.......2006-03-20
I bought this book on spinning because it is so comprehensive, but written in an entertaining manner. As a beginning spinner, who is also working to become a Master Spinner, I find this book can answer all my questions about any facet of spinning. It covers different fibers and their preparation.types of spinning wheels and spindles and all the other equipment needed for all levels of spinning. It is a book that a beginner can start with and still find useful as they progress in their spinning abilities.

Excellent book for ideas and information.......2002-07-16
I am fairly new to all of this herb gardening stuff but this is one of the nicest books I have come across so far. It has alot of nice pictures and diagrams. My favorite parts of the book are the garden ideas/diagrams it shows. It shows a wagon wheel garden, knot gardens, etc. As well as gives potting ideas and helps. In the back is an index of herbs with descriptions and colorful pictures. The pictures do a good job of showing you what the herb looks like. It also have basic garden information on composting etc. I also like that it helps you plan a year round garden. Nothing worse than a garden that only blooms one season! I think anyone who needs help with herb gardening, or anyone in a rut, should check this book out. I really enjoyed it!

Book Description
The marriage of William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919) and Lucy Madox Brown (1843-1894) united two of the most resonant Pre-Raphaelite family names. Their passionate and ultimately tragic relationship-described here for the first time-provides a fresh perspective on nineteenth-century marriage and on the private lives of eminent Victorians. Sibling of Dante Gabriel and Christina Rossetti, William was one of the original Pre-Raphaelite "Brothers," a Bohemian, radical author, poet, critic, artist, connoisseur, biographer, historian, and taxman. Lucy, the intense, intellectual daughter of Ford Madox Brown, was an ambitious artist and biographer of Mary Shelley in spite of struggling with tuberculosis for nearly a decade. Drawing on hundreds of previously unpublished sources and a wealth of new visual material (including art by William, Lucy, and others of their circle and striking contemporary photographs), the book follows William and Lucy through their separate professional careers, marriage, continental travels, and Lucy's illness and death. At the crossover between art history, literary criticism, social history, and biography, the book rewrites Pre-Raphaelite history and brings to life two fascinating people who were both of their time and ahead of it.
