BEACH SURVIVAL GUIDE HITS THE MARK.......2003-08-28
A great book from "Dr. Beach.".......2003-08-18
Interesting and useful book.......2003-07-18
Having been at the beach many times and body-surfed some pretty big waves occasionally, I've had a few harrowing experiences myself. I once had the experience of being in an undertoe that actually pulled me underneath the water, but only for about 5 seconds. It was still a little scary. One time I stupidly tried to ride an 18-foot wave and almost got killed because the wave was what the Aussies call "a dumper" and it smashed me on the bottom. You should avoid fast-breaking dumpers because of that. I think the biggest wave that's safe to ride for most people is probably about 10 feet, unless you've got a belly board, which can outrun the break. Wearing one swim fin (yes, only one is needed, because it's inconvenient to have two fins on) is a trick experienced body-surfers use, that's also helpful for catching waves. Back in the 60's, I saw TV footage of this crazy guy belly-boarding 30-foot waves at Waimea. Talk about guts.
The beach that's the king of the riptides is Sunset Beach in Hawaii. Many people have died there because of rips, and it's capable of pulling you under, too. Once it pulled 3 surfers under at the same time, who unfortunately drowned. One thing to remember is if you "wipe out," be sure to tuck and roll up into a ball. One thing that happens to tourists and neophytes at Sunset is that when they go "over the falls," they don't tuck and then get slammed face first into the bottom, breaking their necks. This happened recently to a young couple that was on their honeymoon, and it's happened a number of times to inexperienced swimmers and body-surfers before. So be careful about that.
Speaking of getting pulled under, I once had the idea for a little invention, a small oxygen cylinder that would weigh maybe 5 or 10 pounds max but that would contain enough air to allow you to breath for a few minutes, if you were going swimming or body- surfing, especially at a potentially dangerous beach like Sunset. Not sure if it would be practical, but I never did follow up on it to find out. But there were a number of times when I wiped out on a big wave and didn't get to take a full breath before I got slammed under, and then I got held down for 20-30 seconds or so, or had to stay down that long because of other breaking waves, and I was almost out of air a couple of times before I was able to surface, and that would have been nice to have.
Another odd fact is that the reason why your feet itch after a day at the beach, at least on western U.S. beaches. It's not because of the hot sand and the salt water. It's because of the pieces of jellyfish, especially man-'o-war, that wash up on the beach, and can still irritate your feet even after days on the sand.
Well, if I haven't scared you off completely from going to the beach again, this is a great little book to learn about all the hazards and dangers. Good luck and happy beach-going!
a great book for the beach!.......2003-07-07

Tips and techniques to investing in technologyCustomer Reviews:
Avoid at all costs.......2004-06-20
As mentioned in an earlier review, in a way this is actually two distinct books: one part professing to dispel the "mysteries of the market" and a second covering the various sub-sectors in the technology industry. Of the two, the first is seriously flawed while the second contains some interesting content that has been better explained elsewhere.
Perhaps the single biggest fault of this book is the author's claim (and the title of chapter 3) that "the old measuring stick doesn't work anymore". The chapter starts, "Conventional methods of evaluating mature businesses are left in the horse-and-buggy age when assessing space-age industries". As we have all seen (and as the author should have recognized himself given that the book was published in 2001), this attitude simply fed the bubble and anyone who subscribed to it got badly burnt. This is all the more odd since the second of the author's "Ten Basic Dos" is "Buy Low". How can the author suggest this when he explicitly rejects what he would view as "old school" valuation methodologies? In the absence of a structured approach, the author is almost breathless about "hot stocks", "hot companies", and "hot markets".
The author seems confused about a number of subjects. As a first example, take IPOs. On the one hand, he advises avoiding them because they tend to be bad investments. On the other, he states later: "Never mind the numbers. If you can score big once, it's worth a whole basket of near misses." So what's the conclusion? A second example is market timing. At first, he gives explicit advice on profiting from the January effect, counseling investors to look for stocks that have lagged, have low P/B ratios, or that are under $10 a share. At the end of the book, however, he seems to have changed his mind, as investing "secret" number 7 is "Don't try to time the market."
Sometimes the situation is even worse than inconsistency. For a self-appointed investment guru, the author appears to actually know little about finance. The best example is an explanation of options, included in a section called "Derivatives, Options, and Other Scary Concepts". The author states that "An option contract gives an investor a right to buy or sell shares of a stock at a specified price (usually today's), at a later date (usually three, six, or nine months away)." There are two problems with this statement. First, it is false to say the strike price is usually equal to "today's" price. In reality, the strike price is set close to the price in effect at the time the contract is launched; after that, the strike price remains constant and "today's" price will fluctuate, and sometimes diverge significantly from the strike price. Second, the author seems to imply that an option holder will be able to exercise the option on only one date; in fact, if the option is American, the holder can exercise at any point prior to the expiry date. As a final example of the author's ignorance on the subject, he states: "A buyer of a call option is generally bullish about the underlying security known as the derivative"; in reality, it is the option itself that is the derivative with (in this example) the stock as the underlying.
The second half of the book is better and gives an overview of the technology segments (e.g., software, semiconductors, networking equipment, etc.). This section is useful for organizing the industry, but this knowledge can be gained by looking at the various sub-indices that have already been created in the technology sector. As for the content of the chapters, the author does share some good points. For example, he points out the threat that Microsoft represents to many players in the software industry. More often, though, he seems to be in rapture with the companies and the industry and his ivnestment view suffers as a result. Consider his comment in the "Fun and Games" (entertainment and media) chapter on the AOL-Time Warner merger: "The merger of AOL, the world's biggest internet company, with Time Warner, the world's biggest media company, consummated the convergence dream...The new juggernaut will fundamentally change the way get information, communicate with others, buy products, and are entertained." Well, not really. In fact, the merger has since proven to be a failure, recognized by everyone, not least the company itself. This attitude is found in every chapter.
Do yourself a favor and skip this book entirely. Focus on some of the more competent treatments of the subject. One book in particular is "The Dark Side of Valuation", which is admittedly a bit more theoretical than this book. "Fire Your Stock Analyst" is a better primer on the market in general and getting started in investing.
Too general-needs more specifics........1999-03-23
Also, the book only spends two pages talking about Options trading which can prove to be a very important investment tool (when used correctly) for both hedging and/or locking in future profits. But, again the author only discusses Options trading in general terms without specific information to inform the investor about the proper methods to utilize Options trading. This example is indicative throughout the book, where the author touches on a subject but never explains it to fully inform the reader. After reading the book from cover-to-cover the reader walks away with more questions and less information than when first started.
I do recommend this book if you are interested in knowing the various segments involved that comprise the technology sector for general information. However, I do not recommend this book if you are interested in learning about investment opportunities in technology companies.
I hope that the author incorporates more specific information about the aspects that make up a "good tech company" and a "good management" in his next book, if there is going to be one.
A good fundamental investment book dealing with the tech sec.......1998-11-06

Book Description
Julien Levy (1906-1981) was one of the most influential art dealers of the twentieth century. The Julien Levy Gallery, which opened in New York in 1931 and closed in 1949, played an essential role in the shift of the cultural avant-garde from Paris to New York. It was the first American gallery to sponsor a show on Surrealism and to champion Neoromanticism, Magic Realism, and Machine Abstraction. Luis Buñuel's film Un Chien Andalou and Joseph Cornell's Rose Hobart were first screened in the gallery. Among the artists Levy exhibited were Eugene Atget, Constantin Brancusi, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Joseph Cornell, Salvador Dali, Walt Disney, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Walker Evans, Leonor Fini, Naum Gabo, Alberto Giacometti, Arshile Gorky, Frida Kahlo, Fernand Léger, René Magritte, Lee Miller, Man Ray, Ben Shahn, and Dorothea Tanning. Levy also initiated the cocktail opening.
