Book Description

While other collections of letters and memoirs from World War II have dealt with upper-class individuals, officers, or college-educated people, Home Front Soldier is the first to explore the life of an ordinary, working-class, first-generation American. This gripping story of a young soldier, Philip L. Aquila, and his Italian American family during the Second World War includes a detailed introduction, providing historical context to the more than 500 letters that this sergeant wrote to his family back home in Buffalo, New York.

Like an epistolary novel, the letters offer an intimate personal history of how a large immigrant family with four sons in the military coped with the daily traumas of World War II. Each of the major and minor plots relates to larger questions in American social history of the 1930s and 1940s, offering fresh insights about family history, gender relations, ethnic and immigration history, and everyday life on the home front. The book also fills a gap in military history by providing detailed information about soldiers stationed in the United States during the war.

5 out of 5 stars What A Book.......2002-04-20

I am one of the many cousins of Richard Aquila, although I don't know him very well. I am one of Francie's daughter's. I have to say that I learned more about my grand parents and uncles from this book than my parents ever told me. I can't even begin to imagine what it had to be like to pack up the family every summer and bring them to the farms to pick crops for the farmers. I never knew how brave my grandmother was as she fought cancer while four of her sons were in the armed services. It seemed that she waited for all of them to come home safe before she let the disease take her. My grandmother died well before I was born, and my grandfather died when I was a small child, so my memeories of him are very faint. I couldn't put this book down after I started it. I wanted it to go on forever to learn more about my family. I think everyone will be taken in by the struggles endured by this family even if you're not a member of the Aquila clan.

This book was recommended to my coworker for an adjunt book for teaching a mental health recovery class. We had an older copy. The new revised edition is even better than before. Many of the participants have liked it so much I have purchased additional copies for their own use. It is a great holistic approach towards wellness and can apply to a lot of differant populations.

      5 out of 5 stars Wellness Education.......2004-11-24

I love this book! and am grateful for its reintroduction into the marketplace. With its new look and updated content I can now use the Wellness Workbook in my college health classes without fear of being labeled out of date. The Wellness Workbook was one of the original shapers of the Wellness Movement in the early 1980s, and promoted the idea that health was more than the absence of disease. Authors Travis and Ryan encouraged, and still encourage, readers to think, "Why settle for getting by, when your one precious life could be so much more?" They present Wellness as a jouney, a way of living and thinking, rather than a destination. The Wellness Workbook gracefully suggests that we take a mindful look at our lifestyles, and consider the impact our lifestyles have, in every fine detail, on ourselves, our families, our communities, and our world.
When most people hear the word "Wellness," they think healthful diet, exercise, and maybe a little stress management. This book goes far beyond the standard superficial health advice found in most books with Wellness in their title. The Wellness Workbook presents the most holistic and integrated view of wellness I have ever found in my twenty plus years as a health educator. As an example of this, take a look at the chapter on Wellness and Eating, where Travis and Ryan encourage you to consider the many meanings of hunger and nourishment. Along with a discussion of Eating for High-Level Wellness you will also find sections on Food as a Pain Reliever, Filling Up the Emptiness, and Food as Emotional Insulation. Although these sections may sound somewhat gloomy, the thoughtful writing is nonjudgmental and interesting, and the humor found throughout the book allows the book to "walk its talk" and consider the many sides of every issue, and understand how the many facets of Wellness are related one to another.

5 out of 5 stars comprehensive and inspiring.......2004-11-09

The New Wellness Workbook, which was new to me with this 3rd edition, is the most comprehensive book that I have ever seen on wellness. Going far beyond cultural and medical ideas of health, the authors inspire us to look at our own wellbeing from the widest perspective, including emotional, social, and spiritual perspectives. As a holistic GP (family MD) I know that this book will be at the top of my recommended reading list.

5 out of 5 stars If you want a healthy and full life, this is THE manual!.......2004-10-14

I am a Certified HypnoBirthing® Childbirth Educator and I am sharing this with every person I know personally and every couple I come into contact professionally. I look forward to sharing it with my young daughter someday 10 years from now [hopefully Dr. Travis & Ms. Ryan will write future editions too]! I ate up each and every page, looking forward to the next. Plus it was easy to read and the index was so detailed that I could locate specific concerns quickly as if Dr. Travis was personally answering my inquiry. I loved the personal pictures from the authors' childhood and the last page [Grand Certificate] deserves to be on everyone's wall. If more parents followed the information in this book, the result would be lots of happier children, better balanced and less angry teenagers and less violent and money/status starved adults in our world. I know I will be referring to my copy for years to come ...or until the cover falls off! Perhaps by then the 4th edition will be birthed. I'm also planning to give copies as gifts since what it better but the gift of health!

5 out of 5 stars without a doubt the best book on wellness you will find.......2004-09-13

Here is the revised and updated version of the book that started the wellness movement, and nearly 30 years later it's still the best! While other wellness books look primarily at diet and exercise, this book looks at the multi-dimensionality of wellness. It's a rich, well documented source of information, perspectives and questions that will, with a little self-responsible commitment on your part, change your life -- I promise. Jack Travis created the models you will find here. I see them in a lot of other books, usually without proper attribution. He is a visionary extraordinaire and he just keeps doing it -- looking to the possible and insisting it can be done. And sure enough, when you give it a try, it can be done and your life will never be the same.

With Regina Ryan's wealth of experience, knowledge and extraordinary clarity, you have a resource that should be in every personal or public library. Put it in yours -- better yet, put it on your bedside table -- read it, use it until it is dog-eared and part of your life. Allow it to help you ask questions, find answers and experiment. Use it to find what works for you. It's not a Bible. It's more like a laboratory. It doesn't say, "This is the only way." It says, "Here are some questions. Here is the research, the information, some possibilities. Try them. See what you think."

It's such a wealth of information and perspectives that from the first edition of The Wellness Workbook in the late `70's (in a 3-ring binder) to this new, classy edition, it's still on my bedside table, keeping me focused on my wellness process.

This is a super cookbook and one that I have known about for more than 30 years. I just located a replacement copy after looking everywhere (but the web.) As a native San Franciscan I have seen my share of wonderful food, often in the most unusual places. This delightful book gives new meaning to the words home cooking.

San Francisco firemen are world famous. If you are lucky enough to locate a copy of this cookbook, you'll see why more local policemen try out for the Fire Exam each year. I wish I could.

As a firefighter, this is a terrific traditional old style firehouse recipe cookbook. My father is even shown in the pictorial section of the book doing an exterior attack in 1965. I recommend it heartily, but prefer the cooks at the Presidio Firehouse

This handbook has great color photos, and much helpful advice. I am, however, frustrated by a sentence concerning the handling of knits that begins at the bottom of page 108 yet has no end at the top of 109.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Surger Guide-is the ultimate.......2007-05-17

I am a beginner and my teacher used this book in my surger class-she told me to buy it and read it like a college text book, complete with highlighting passages. I did and WOW. I refer to it often-the photos are detailed and directions complete and easy to follow and understand. A lot of shortcuts are included as well. I highly recommend this book for all ages of surgers!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for beginners.......2006-08-08

This books picks up where the instruction manual leaves off. I recently purchased a serger and this book helped me to familiarize myself with the machine, different types of threads and the various types of stitches that can be made with a serger. The photos and clearly written instructions in each chapter made me very comfortable with my machine. The author provides the right amount of detail to guide you step-by-step without becoming overwhelmed. I highly recommend this book to beginners, but it's also a good resource for the more advanced.

5 out of 5 stars New to serging? This is THE book........2003-12-10

This book is the perfect book for a beginner serger owner. Serger manuals are useful for getting to know the mechanics of your serger, but leave off after listing the basic stitches and settings. Serging really is different than sewing, and this book of Chris James' teaches you everything else you need to know to become very adept at using your machine. The close-up photos really illustrate what the stitches should and shouldn't look like. Her book also helps you understand how the machine works, which in turn allows you to master your machine (rather than merely follow the settings in your manual). She offers many, many tips and how-tos, and her samples are inspirational. I have noticed several small mistakes, such as a mismatch of needle sizes (she says 80/14 and 90/16 rather than 80/12 and 90/14, and at least one of her rolled hem close-ups is mislabeled.) Don't let that stop you from purchasing this book however.

I teach serger classes to new serger owners and much of what I discuss comes from this book. I also have the "Serger Secrets" book. It shows more specific applications; very useful as well. I also refer to my "Polar Fleece Adventures" series by Nancy Cornwall often as I serge with fleece frequently.

5 out of 5 stars This is IT for beginners!.......2003-03-04

This told me EVERYTHING to begin serging, practically from taking it out of the box. It discusses everything from turning the machine on and off, to threading for different stiches, the differences between stitches, good fabric to use versus good fabric for regular sewing, etc. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for the complete novice.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a Serger Book with Practical Applications.......2007-09-27

I have purchased LOTS of different serger books, all of which teach you how to thread your machine and adjust for a balanced stitch, many of which suggest weird "crafty" applications for sergers -- but this is the first book I've found that tells you how to start incorporating your serger into a variety of basic garment construction: children's wear, underpants, jeans, sweaters -- you name it. The clothing styles in the illustrations are a bit dated, and I wish the book was larger and had color photos rather than line illustrations so as to be easier on the eyes, but the techniques apply just as easily to current fashions. The content of this book more than makes up for the lackluster visual appeal. How to adapt commercial pattern instructions, change sewing order, and techniques for the serger in garment construction, proper threads and needles for different types of fabrics are all covered well. This might not be the ONLY serger book you'll ever need, but it will be a handy reference for any new serger owner or for anyone who has been using their serger just to overcast seam allowances and who wants to learn more.

4 out of 5 stars Handy little book to have around........2007-02-07

Sewing machines are a fun way to express yourself and anyone can learn. After you have mastered the basics of sewing it's time to get a serger and really have fun. This book is a great little reminder of all of the things you can do with a serger and the fun you can have with a machine that finishes and even trims your seams.

3 out of 5 stars Sewing with Sergers.......2006-11-08

This book has been helpful in getting started with serging. I have never had a serger before and am just learning. By using the manual from my machine and this book, I am doing OK. Some things I have more difficulty than others and I get bogged down with the instructions in the book. It may just be me or they could be more clear.

2 out of 5 stars Too dated and if you have a decent manual you don't need this book........2006-07-14

The first 8 chapters of this book are in your owners manual. Chapter 1 (what is a serger), Chapter 2 (which one to buy), Chapter 3 (thread and threading), Chapter 4 (cutting your pattern) chapter 5-8(curved seams, securing ends, sewing order and, tension balance) all already in my manual. Chapters 9-20 get a little more interesting but seems a little dated. There are tips on how to make a leotard, stirrup pants and leg warmers. First copyright is from 1985 not its not improved much in the third edition. I would have enjoyed some better pictures too. If you have a decent manual this really isn't the book for you. For me it was too dated and too basic.

Everything you need to know about serging. This book covers everything from the basics to intermediate serging. It even tells you how to thread the machine and about tension settings.

                                  Book Description

In this book, the preeminent child psychologist of our time gives us the results of his lifelong effort to determine what is most crucial in successful child-rearing. His purpose is not to give parents preset rules for raising their children, but rather to show them how to develop their own insights so that they will understand their own and their children's behavior in different situations and how to cope with it. Above all, he warns, parents must not indulge their impulse to try to create the child they would like to have, but should instead help each child fully develop into the person he or she would like to be.

This is a sophisticated read - but well worth it! I am a child therapist and child development specialist and believe this book to be the bible of healthy child-rearing. Bettelheim is brilliant, caring and compassionate. Take time to read this prize, maybe 6 months or so. Read it slowly so that you can pick up all the messages and insights that he offers. Other great reads are Rudolf Driekers, "Children the Challenge" and Adele Faber's "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen." - Kimberley Clayton Blaine, LA, Ca.

Marvelous book - have referred back to it many times for encouragement and reinforcement of my own parenting "beliefs". When I have grandkids, this will be my first gift to the prospective parents

                                                  Book Description

Try to picture Mark Twain, or Uncle Remus, or even Theodore Roosevelt. More than likely, you have a Frances Benjamin Johnston image in your mind. Johnston was a significant--and arresting--figure in early twentieth-century photography. Beautifully illustrated with forty examples of her work, this first full-length biography explores the surprising range of Johnston's talent, as well as her high-stepping, controversial character.

Johnston produced a good deal of the usual society portraiture of the time--including a nude photograph of a debutante that prompted the girl's outraged father to file a lawsuit--but she was also an important photodocumentarian. Students of African American history can reexamine life at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) or Tuskegee using hundreds of photographs made by Johnston at the turn of the last century.

Through Johnston's work we can see Admiral Dewey on the deck of the USS Olympia, the Roosevelt children playing with their pet pony at the White House, and the gardens of Edith Wharton's famous villa near Paris. Johnston's major project on early vernacular architecture of the American South preserves scores of buildings that no longer exist except on her film.

However, while many are familiar with Johnston's photographs, most know little about the woman who made them. And without the context of her life, which Bettina Berch gives us in all its contradiction and color, Johnston's subjects may seem inchoate, her choices part feminist and part reactionary, part radical and part retrograde.

Johnston entered photography when the field was relatively new, and professional gender boundaries were still being defined. The invention of lighter equipment and changing technologies in developing meant that photography could be moved from the studio and darkroom--male provinces--out into the street or the home. But the repressiveness of late nineteenth-century society sometimes cast a shadow: there were a host of prescriptions governing proper female behavior, and certainly the sensuality of the human body as a subject caused many to argue that this new art form should remain a male preserve.

Within these boundaries, Johnston defined herself as an artist. Raised in an upper-middle-class household in Washington, D.C., she declined to "marry money" and instead made her living as an artist, although she enjoyed the cushion of her family's wealth and connections. In the course of her career, she moved through a series of interests, from portraiture to historic preservation. It is her restlessness, her resistance to easy categorizing, that makes this upper-class bohemian photographer such a fascinating subject herself.
