Armchair historians and civil war enthusiasts, it's again time to arise from your La-Z-Boy recliners and hit the Civil War trail. This time you will follow in the footsteps of Marse Roberts from his birth through his early days in the army to visiting the White House in 1869 when he payed a brief visit to President Grant.
With 11 states, Washington D.C. and the brief inclusion of sites in Mexico you will need to spend several weeks going from site to site. However, the author breaks down the trips by state and gives excellent directions that will keep even the novice historian from loosing his way. You will be taken to several larger, well-known sites in West Virginia and Virginia as well as many smaller sites within these states and distant states such as Texas, Missouri and Florida.
Many have been to Sharpsburg, Manassas or perhaps South Mountain but it's doubtful that few have made it Stratford Hall where Lee was born. Therefore, it's fitting that the book starts out at Stratford Hall and gives brief insight into the life and lack of homeownership by Lee. From his birth in 1807 to his death in 1870, he never owned a single place of residence. He slept at his parents' home, army barracks, his wife's inherited house, and several homes borrowed from individuals during and after the war. He never paid out of pocket for any property on which he resided.
The research within these pages is top notch and gives the reader some excellent side bar material to whet his or her appetite for more on Robert E. Lee. The descriptions are concise and to the point and give just enough detail to allow the reader to understand how the specific location played a key role in shaping young Lee or perhaps how it effected his overall battle strategy in his later years. The accounts are well done and not overly detailed giving the average reader a nice foundation for a beginning study on Lee. The chapters are well laid out, state by state, but in order to keep this data from filling several volumes it does not include every little site associated with Lee. Not to worry, the author chose wisely and the selected material flows quite nice.
In going through this work the reader will enjoy his or her journey into Lee's past with stops along the way at several key historic areas. This is not a paperback for the hard-nosed historian, but well-done research for those interested in following in "The Footsteps of Robert E. Lee". Mr. Johnson has done it again and I highly recommend this book!

This book was very disappointing. There are no photos in the entire book; instead there are just line drawings. I tried a couple of the exercises and immediately had significant jaw pain. I have issues with TMJ, but had not experienced any jaw pain in almost 15 years. Just one of these exercises was enough to bring back immediate pain. This was the first book that I have ever returned to Amazon.
Too much effort - too few results........2006-10-24
I tried the exercises in this book for three months to see what results I would achieve. Unfortunately, I didn't notice any noticeable results. I even had a friend take a picture of me before and after 1, 2 and 3 months to see if I could see a difference. I didn't. A friend of mine who does facial exercises told me to get a copy of another book on facial exercises called Facercise. I did the same thing here. I took before and after pictures at 1,2 and three month intervals. I was excited when I could see a change in one month. I actually had several people tell me I looked different after 2 months. That's all I needed. I can feel my muscles burn when I do Facercise. I didn't get that feeling at all when I used this book. Sometimes you have to try different things to get the results you expect. I just wish I'd started with Facercise first, not the other way around.
They Work!.......2006-10-07
These exercises work. No question about it - they really work. I'm 40 and was starting to notice the old age droop in my cheek and eye muscles as well as the characteristic bulge from untoned tongue muscles. Within one week of doing these exercises I noticed significant improvement. The cheek droop line is tightening up and receding. The muscles of my eyes and forehead have tightened up and lifted again. What's more, unlike with Carol Maggio's book, these exercises gave me a way to do these exercises without creating new wrinkles - a big reason why I stopped the exercises from Maggio's book.
The directions are step by step and very clear. I appreciated the drawings demonstrating the muscles targeted by each exercise. Pages 16 and 17 for example showed how the underlying face muscles of a young person (p. 16) look compared to an older person (p. 17).
Here's an excerpt to give you an idea of what a bit of the text is like to go with the illustrations.
"The illustrations show the contrast between facial muscles before and after premature aging. In the illustration on the left, the muscles are strong and tight. They support the skin around the eyes and the contours of the cheeks, lips and lower face. Notice how the cheek muscles insert into the mouth muscle and provide support for it.
prematurely aged eye muscles are too weak to hold the skin firmly in place. This causes squint lines, hollows, and bags to form in the skin around the eyes. In addition, cheek muscles sag and no longer provide support for the cheeks and the mouth muscle. When the mouth muscle lacks the support of strong cheek and chin muscles the lips tend to turn inward. Jaw and neck muscles become limp and slack and the skin attached to them becomes loose and shapeless."
If you are considering a face exercise book you can't go wrong giving this book a chance.
Wonderful book, usable instructions!.......2006-09-10
In this book I found what I was looking for. It has excellent pictures, clear instructions, explanation of how our face ages, specific exercises for the different areas of the face, and the goal of each exercise. I especially like using my "will" to get my face muscles to move. Although I don't do the exercises consistently every day, I see progress anyway. I was able to tighten my cheek muscles so that my cheek dimple, which had sort of slid down toward my jaw, is now higher on my face. Cute! There are some exercises that I can do at my desk at work, which I like. Great book for those who want to know WHY the exercise works.
Face Exercises that prevent premature Aging.......2006-09-06
This book does a very good job of explaining the exercises and how to do them. I read through all the exercises but for some reason haven't started them yet. 2 possible explanations. One is I am lazy the other is that the book failed to inspire.

I read this book in college for kicks and it opened my eyes about many things. Moonshiners were not just crusty old mountaineers who wanted to get drunk and have a good time. This book explains how the social and economic aspects of an agrarian sub-culture led to an era of Americana that has been immortalized by icons like the Hatfield/McCoy feud, Snuffy Smith, and characters from "The Andy Griffith Show". Maurer shows how a seemingly innocuous pasttime like making illicit liguor grew from an immigrant tradition to the sport of NASCAR. Anecdotes, pictures, illustrations, and testimony brings it all together. A good read for anyone intersted in a often misunderstood piece of American history.

Fire in the Hole uses oral tradition and interviews to tell the story of moonshining and crime in rural appalachia, specifically in Cumberland County, Kentucky, during the first half of the 20th century. Many of the stories included in this book have never been put to paper before and have either been passed down by generation or personally experienced by the storytellers. While various areas of Cumberland County are mentioned throughout the text, the focus lies with the now defunct Coe Ridge Colony of settlers that started as a community of freed slaves immediately after the Civil War. Using personal interviews conducted two decades ago, the book offers a never before seen glimpse of the moonshine maker's life in the rural hills and hollows of Kentucky.

Moonshine in Kentucky.......2004-02-02
When someone talks about the people and customs of Appalachia and Eastern Kentucky, often the topic of moonshine whiskey will come up. There are lots of stories about moonshiners. Some of these might even include our own ancestors. Illegal Odyssey is the latest addition to the moonshine history bookshelf.
This small book attempts to tell the history of an illegal enterprise in Kentucky. It does a very good job of telling the general history of distilling, legal and illegal, in Kentucky and the government's efforts to curb it. We discover that the earliest settlers of what would become Kentucky produced their own spirits. As Kentucky and the nation developed, so did the whiskey industry. That growth prompted the federal and a state government to see it as a source of tax revenue. The effort to collect those taxes began the cat and mouse "odyssey" of poor farmers, the moonshiners, trying to make a extra money, as the revenuers scoured the hills to shut them down. Unfortunately, due to the illegal nature of moonshining, we get few of the "moonshiner vs revenue" tales in this book.
The book closes on a sad note as it relates the passing of the moonshiner after more than two centuries. Those who were moonshiners, or might have become one, are taking up a new vocation, marijuana grower. Moonshining just doesn't pay like growing weed!

I've had this book a few years and I've never got any inspiration from this one. It feels outdated, colorless and the projects are boring. There are better books to buy out there.

Not only are the pictures and drections clear but this book is great for those looking for a bump in skill level from your basic beading techniques. Basics in the back are helpful if one forgets how to stitch or bend something.

Good, beautiful, fun...but not for beginners........2006-03-03
This is a lovely book for beaders with some experience.
There are some projects that may suit for new beaders but most of them require that you be familiar with stitches, techniques and beading skills that you learn after some time of practice.
All projects are beautifully photographed and show variations on the same topic. Explanations are clear and precise and I was delighted to find, at the end of the book, some pages with basic information on knots, stitches, beading and jewelry making techniques, which is a most welcome addition to the 100 projects shown in the book.
If you are an intermediate - advanced beader, I do recommend you to buy this beautiful book.
Fabulous Book!.......2005-05-20
I received Chic & Easy Beading today and am really thrilled with it. The projects are straight-forward and step-by-step photos are provided to demonstrate techniques. With the exception of a few projects that weren't to my taste, there are enough ideas in here to keep me inspired for years! The beauty, of course, is that you can substitute any colours you don't care for to something of your own choosing. I would highly recommend buying this book -- it'll be a great addition to your beading library. :)
Excellent Book .......2005-03-23
Viewing the inside of Chic & Easy Beading on this site does not show the buyer the excellent instructions and steps for each project. A friend brought this book in at work for me to look at now I want to buy a copy. I would not have ordered the book if I had not seen the step by step instructions that are unfortunately not shown while viewing this site. Chic & Easy Beading shows clear step by step pictures of each project. The most complicated project looks so easy to make. I cannot wait to have my own copy.

This is a fairly new book but it feels outdated and old, the colors are muted and the jewelry is not inspiring. I didn't find any projects in this book I would like to make and this book is not even pretty to look at. Buy the Easy Beading books instead, they're full of great ideas.

"Dim Sum" is an absolutely wonderful book for anyone who is thinking about adoption or who has adopted - internationally or domestically. It is also a wonderful resource for anyone (adoptive parent or not) who wants to help their children be proud of their heritage. With two children adopted internationally, my husband and I refer to it quite often for resources dealing with our childrens' heritage as well as issues related to adoption in general. Full of resources as well as advice and snipets of the author's own experiences, it is simply a wonderful resource and a great read!

This book is a valuable resource for all who are living in a multicultural family, or who want to create one. It focuses to a large extent on families with children adopted abroad. These families are multi-ethnic but not necessarily multi-cultural. It is a daunting task for a parent to try to teach a child about a cultural heritage that the parent does not share. "Dim Sum, Bagels and Grits" can help those families take that first step. It is also useful for families that are mixed-race or mixed-ethnicity by birth.
What A Silly Book - Don't Waste Your Time Or Money.......2001-05-10
This book seemed at once superficial and pointless. It is about....nothing at all save some ravings about "multicultural" families that ring false at every note. One has to wonder why, with such an emphasis on multicultural and non nuclear families in the beginning of the 21st century how a meandering and pandering text like this ever got published. You want a really great read on the issue: try THE RUSSIAN WORD FOR SNOW, a newly published adoption story that touches upon multicultural issues at their deepest -- not this hopeless missive that touches on so very little.

Pierre Julien: Sculptor to Queen Marie-Antoinette is a scholarly study of the artist (1731Â-1804) who rose from humble beginnings, the son of an illiterate carpenter, to become professor at the Paris Académie and director of the sculptural decoration at Marie-AntoinetteÂ's dairy at Rambouillet (1785Â-87), a surprise gift from Louis XVI.
