More than an autobiography of a distinguished Jewish leader, this book mirrors American and Jewish history in the second half of the twentieth century. Mendy Ganchrow, M.D. has met and conferred with American Presidents from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton, with Israeli Prime Ministers from Yitzhak Rabin to Ariel Sharon, with many members of the U.S. Congress and the Knesset, as well as with religious leaders in Israel, the United States, and many other countries around the world. In Journey through the Minefields, he shares his many experiences with those personalities and events that have shaped our contemporary world.

The Vietnam War was, perhaps, the seminal moment in Ganchrow's life. As a young doctor and officer, soon promoted to Major in the active battle-zone, he brought his surgical skills to those young American servicemen wounded in combat. As an observant Jew, who became an acting Jewish Chaplain in Long Binh, he brought spiritual comfort to fellow Jews serving with him.

While in the midst of a very successful career as a surgeon, it was suggested to Ganchrow that he join AIPAC, The American Israel Public Affairs Committee. His faith, combined with his fervor for the American way of life, pointed him to ever more involved levels of political activism, leading to the creation of a successful pro-Israel political action committee (HUVPAC) and eventually culminating in his election to the presidency of the Orthodox Union in 1994. Even during the most trying times of his presidency, he demonstrated the same outstanding commitment and leadership skills that had been part of his nature throughout his life.

His subsequent years of leadership of American Orthodoxy and his critical role in the pro-Israel political community exemplify his dedication to Israel and tikun olam (healing the world).

Journey Through the Minefields depicts a life that spells loyalty to principle, leadership, and a living example of how one can be dedicated to the cause of American demoncracy, Jewish faith, the Torah way of life, and the welfare of all Jews.

This book is well-written and interesting. It will absorb your attention and it's rarely dull. On the other-hand its style reminds me of the W.E.B.Griffin Action-Hero books. Everything and everyone in the book is "too this" and "too that." The book is autobiographical. Krekorian depicts himself as the best there ever was...Best Surgeon, Best Commander, Best Husband, Best Friend...Best (fill in the blank). Everyone in the book is a Superhero or a Super-villain. There is no grey. I wondered for a moment if Krekorian and W.E.B.Griffin were separated at birth, but discounted the idea when I further reflected that Krekorian probably had the perfect childhood. But it's not a bad book if you like W.E.B.Griffin, and I don't question the author's basic honesty. There likely are mortals like Ed Krekorian out there in the world...somewhere.

I found the condition of both books excellent. The second was particularly relevant to what I was doing, although I did get some ideas from the first.

I needed the books urgently and they were out of print in Australia, so I cheerfully bore the cost of the exchange rate and shipping. The books arived in good time.

Simple, But Unoriginal.......2005-05-02

I found this book and thought it would be the perfect reader to help me out without needing to wade through lots of information. I was wrong. Covering things such as cognitive distortions and medication, this book didn't tell me how to overcome shyness. If you're looking for some help in those agonizing social situations, I wouldn't let the simplistic appearance of this book fool you. True, it offers some very helpful information, but not anything you can't read elsewhere.

A Powerfully Simple Approach to Shyness.......2004-10-19

I've suffered from social anxiety for years, and have found many ways to avoid it.

My therapist recommended this book, and I have found it to be insightful, direct, and immediately helpful.

As with most books that deal with social anxiety, your progress towards alleviating that anxiety is really dependent upon the work that you are willing to do to complete the exercises that are outlined in the book.

I'm just getting started myself, but already I have a more hopeful outlook on being able to just be myself and accept what happens as I put myself "out there" in engaging in social situations.

I hope you find this book just as motivational.

They are as much as 70% lower in sodium than those of other low-sodium cookbooks.Whereas doctors often use the figure 2000 mg or 2500 mg daily as a "low-sodium" goal for their heart disease and hypertensive patients because they don't believe it's possible to concoct a diet lower in sodium than that, these recipes, whose sodium content, carefully calculated according to existing standards, a menu of these recipes will yield no more than 500 mg.daily.What will delight those who go to them for health -- and their families -- is that by some magic Gazzaniga has been able to present the cook with finished dishes that are varied, easy to make, and as delicious as any "regular" dishes. This book is a "must have" for those serious about low sodium cooking - an ESSENTIAL, along with "Cooking Without a Grain of Salt". Great recipes, and great advice about minimizing sodium in one's diet. A bargain for all the assistance it provides.

Physicians will talk "low sodium" but not really how and this book helps that. My husband was dx with severe CHF with possible transplant looming up within the year. A low sodium diet became my contribution to his treatment. He also needed a biventricular pump and various medications but my guess is that the diet changes helped an additional 10-20% and when your heart function is that poor, all the percentages add up. This book helped educate us both especially during the first few months when we were stunned by the change in our reality. I especially like knowing the sodium content of things; so although we used that book a lot initially, I need it less now. Some recipes suffer from...lack of salt...but one learns to deal with it. I find the more acidic the food (tomato, lemon juice, vinegar) the less likely we notice or care that it is low sodium. My husband (almost a year later) is also a success story. His heart has improved (as viral cardiomyopathies can sometimes do) but I believe all the treatment gave his heart the ability to recover. But, regardless of the cause of one's heart failure, treatments that allow the heart to function better all add up. We are not as strict as Don and keep the sodium to 1600-1800 mg a day but that still requires planning and we combine low sodium cooking, no sodium baking soda and baking powder, no or low sodium commercial products (always check what "low sodium means"), spices instead of salt, and limiting any high sodium foods. We read labels, and have found commercially produced bread with 0 mg of sodium.

No-Salt, Lowest Sodium Cookbook .......2007-04-11

This collection of recipes and helpful hints on avoiding excessive intake of salt is a must have for anyone on a low sodium diet or who wants to minimize the sodium in his/her diet. As you would expect, the book has many recipes for preparing and making dishes and meals without salt and the use of low sodium foods and ingredients in place of those laced with sodium. But, in addition, there are many useful tips on such things as eating out, where it is virtually impossible to know what the nutrient values of foods are or to avoid high-sodium food. The author even has devised a scheme to deal with the fast food places (take your own bun and order the burger without condiments).
The book contains more than just recipes and menus. It includes material on substitutions of food (helpful for devising your own recipes or modifying the author's), and very helpful info on where to purchase some of the food products not commonly found in supermarkets. And, of course, there are discussions of the health benefits of reducing sodium intake and descriptions of various food staples -- including water, which was an eye-opener (yeh, in some places you gotta keep an eye on what is in the water)!
Many of the recipes are fine for those who are well-versed in the arts of the kitchen or who have time to both learn the techniques and prepare the food. But there are plenty of simple recipes that even a neophyte like me can handle. Each recipe includes a nutritional analysis of the finished product, itemizing the biggies like sodium content, cholesterol, fat (saturated and both mono- and poly-unsaturated -- but not trans fat), carbohydratesk, fiber and proteins. It also includes content amounts of calcium, potassium and iron. Sugar content is not listed and that is an unfortunate omission.
For those who have to watch what they eat and must or want to keep the sodium intake down, I think this is one of three books that are must-haves, the others being The Encyclopedia of Food Values by Corrine Netzer and the Joy of Cooking, by Rombauer & Becker. The Encyclopedia (not the paperback version) lists every conceivable nutrient in virtually any food you can think of, which makes it a helpful addition when adapting or devising recipes - but contains very little on cooking or preparation. Joy is indispensible for detailed descriptions of cooking techniques and alternative ingredients - but contains no nutritional analysis of recipes. The No-Salt, Lowest Sodium Cookbook fills the gap by providing both low sodium recipes, nutritional analyses, and some basic cooking technique information.

can you do what you like?.......2007-05-17

many people who love to work wood decide to do it for a living, and this book covers the basics. as far as this type of cabinetmaking book goes, it is pretty good. for most of us, the cabinets are not the issue. the problem is that suddenly we have to know taxes, paperwork, marketing, some law, personnel management, etc.

where all these books fall short is in the stuff we don't want to do: set up a business plan in depth. why are you different from the guy down the street who is making boxes too? why are you better, where is your weakness? any book can tell you how to make a face frame cabinet or euro cabinet, but what about the other aspects you will have to know?

again, it is a book of value, and better than the others of this genre i have read, but check it out and go from there.

Wish I had this book 35 years ago!.......2007-07-16

What a great book! Ms. Ward summarizes in just a few hundred pages what it took me nearly 30 years to learn. Her story is so inspiring that it left me just mesmerized. The road she traveled to become a success was so long that it makes it easy for the reader to say, "Wow, if she can do it, then so can I!"

The book is well written, engaging, and very enjoyable to read. There are many specific exercises to do so that you can implement her suggestions and look deeply into your own life. I can't say enough good things about this book. I have already bought many copies to give as gifts, particularly to the young adults in my life who have so much potential and are sabotaging themselves with all the daily manifestations of poor self esteem.

Francine is Very Inspiring.......2005-08-02

I was lucky enough to meet Francine at a book signing and she is indeed an impressive person. The book flows well and Francine's personal story is really the inspiration. I find when I don't feel like doing something I repeat what she said to our group.
"It's an esteemable act to....." and then I do it anyway.
She does not advocate any quick fixes, just constant small esteemable acts.

How can you expect other's to know who you are when you don't know yourself? Esteemable Acts is a self-help book based on helping you identify yourself and overcome issues and excuses that's holding you back from being all you can be.

This is one of those books that help you understand why you do some of the things you do and help you identify why things turn out the way they do in your life. You will need to be honest with yourself in order to take the self-help test. Once you realize what you need to do you will find out no-one knows you better than you do.

I really enjoyed this book and most of what I read helped me (Ok, the majority of what I read helped me...see I admitted it).

Thank you Ms. Ward for a well-written book. You really did your research.

The book Esteemable Acts, is probably the best thing that's ever happened to me. Francine Ward speaks a lot about walking thru fear -- something i don't do often in my life. She also talks of living your best life, making your dreams come true, and financial freedom. They are the three things I didn't think I could do.

Esteemable Acts teaches you step by step how to make ALL THINGS POSSIBLE. Granted I needed the willingness to take the suggestions in the book, but they really aren't that hard. I've decided to go back to school, and i'm interviewing for a new job. I've moved in with a roommate and am walking thru that fear. I've never felt as good as I do today. Today is by far the best day of my life! Esteemable Acts is a book that has helped me change my life. I'm becoming the person I've always wanted to be!

Her stories of how she overcame a rough beginning prove than ANYONE can develop more confidence if they follow her suggestions. This book gives a very comprehensive overview of all aspects of spoken language processing. It was written by leading members of the spoken language community (Expert Advisory Group on Language Engineering Standards). It is a very valuable reference source for designers of spoken language systems. Each chapter is concluded by a set of recommendations. For readers with a linguistics or CS background, it provides a comprehensive survey of all aspects of spoken language processing, and can be used as introduction to the field. Annoyingly, the book contains a number of typos, and could benefit from thorough proofreading. The book is also available as four reasonably priced paperbacks, some of which are not listed in the Amazon Catalog.
