Book Description
On the brink of her fortieth birthday, Susan Ryan Jordan heard the dreaded words "You have breast cancer." In shock over what she thought was a certain death sentence, Jordan began to read a book her doctor, the now famous Bernie Siegel, gave to her, which challenged cancer patients to heal themselves. Immersed in this hopeful message Jordan took stock of her life. While shocking, Jordan's cancer diagnosis was somehow strangely expected. She had become ensnared in the trap of "fitting in," obeying the dictates of her religion, her family and the social strictures of her town. A painful divorce and temporary leave of her four children for financial reasons only fueled her guilt and overwhelming sense of loss. Despair and self-deprecation had left her open to this life-threatening illness. Jordan's beautifully written and very poignant personal account reveals how changing negative feelings to hope and confidence can, indeed, reverse the course of a disease-even cancer. She also reveals how the still unresolved and painful split with her daughter, actress Meg Ryan, was caused by her newfound self-confidence and strength, and writes that the journey to health sometimes involves loss, but always leads to understanding and serenity. This is a book of hope-an affirmation that true healing and peace is within everyone's each.

Highly Recommended!!.......2007-03-08
This book is a richly detailed memoir of a particular woman and time... it is the story of the author, growing up in 1950's New England, who felt obliged to obey the dictates of her family, religion and society and who suffered the loss of her own self-worth. It is a fascinating portrait of a woman who discovered her true self through her life threatening illness and literally willed herself well. The author is a 28 year breast cancer survivor. The book has recently been honored with an Arts and Excellence award from the Heal Breast Cancer Foundation, which is studying it as part of their research programs. The book is in the reading libraries of hospitals and the author has been a spokeswoman for The American Cancer Society and The Susan G. Komen Foundation. The author describes herself as "a classic breast cancer personality who became a classic breast cancer survivor." The book is a deeply personal and inspiring account of one woman's triumph over lessons of her past in order to recover her health and a joyful future. I recommend it highly.
The ties that bind...........2006-06-15
Meg chose to violate her mother's privacy, and I give her mother cudo's for speaking out and defending herself. Like Meg, Susan chose to leave an unhappy marriage; Unlike Meg, she was not making millions of dollars, and I am sure had to make some choices based on survival. How many of our mothers had the choices that MEG has now, my mother sure did not. Life is not perfect; nor is anyone. I can only hope Meg can avoid the pain of losing a parent one day without saying goodbye, like I did. I think the other reviews on this page do not show any depth of character- but then again, movie stars are "perfect", right? History indeed does repeat itself; good luck Daisy.

The Best Heart Disease Book I've Seen!.......2007-07-25
I've read quite a few books on the subject, and this is the best I've seen. It includes everything from the technical to the practical (including recipes). The author writes clearly...it was relatively easy to read considering the subject matter. I loved that he didn't say "you should never eat______." It can already be so overwhelming to make changes. This book has a lot of information, but I didn't feel overwhelmed. I was actually ENCOURAGED, not discouraged by reading it. I wish I had only bought this book...it's all I needed, and I would have saved a lot of money! I highly recommended it.
I was disappointed.......2007-03-30
I was very disappointed in this book. I thought it would have some of the treatments that Linus Pauling instigated. All it gives you is advice on your diet. I have that from my Doctor!
A Balanced Approach to Heart health issues.......2006-11-04
I found this book helpful - the diets great - the advice about other life factors good - and it gave me an over-all education about all the different treatments now being used. The book seems logical and simple. It makes good sense.
Of course, like most people I bought this book when I was already in trouble with the old heart.
Balanced overview of heart disease and treatment alternatives - provides pros and cons without insisting that it's the only way!.......2006-09-17
Although a pessimist could say that this is a low key ad for Dr. Whitaker's Wellness Institute, which in small part it is, the book provides a balanced view of just what causes heart disease and provides sobering thoughts on the fact that there is no "magic pill" or clear cut way to attack the problem. Differing views are presented and the background for such, although not clearly articulated in the book itself, is provided via the references so that the reader can further explore if more details are desired. The recipes section is somewhat of a waste of print but other than that I found the book very helpful in aiding in an understanding of heart disease and the array of possibilities for treating it. The book also pretty clearly delineates between a "preventative" program and a "reversal" program, dependent on one's personal situation and goals.
How do you know you're reversing heart disease?.......2004-09-06
How can you really know whether coronary heart disease is truly being reversed? Does just surviving until your next birthday suffice? Does not developing symptoms tell you anything? Does even losing 10 lbs really tell you whether coronary plaque has shrunk?
The answer to all these questions, of course, is no. In past, it hasn't been an easy prospect to prove that heart disease is reversed. It's therefore an easy thing to claim. As a result, many programs cropped up in the last 30 years of the last century that made extravagant claims to reverse heart disease. I believe that Dr. Whitaker's well-intended book is among this genre.
The book has its strong points. Dr. Whitaker does a great job of pointing out the terribly misguided approach of conventional invasive cardiology and bypass surgery, its tragic overuse and abuse, and how so-called medical therapy is nothing more than palliative treatment for a relently progressive disease. He also does a good job of discrediting the conventional low-fat diet approach to heart disease prevention, a diet that frequently precedes your heart attack and diabetes.
I do believe, however, that there's much more of the story yet to be told and Dr. Whitaker's book falls short.

Wonderful cookbook.......2004-12-18
I've had this cookbook for several years and I think it's terrific. I haven't made a recipe from it that disappointed me.
The recipes are not difficult to make, so anyone should be able to cook from this book. The food turns out a bit sophisticated. You could easily use some of these recipes for a dinner party.
Two of the recipes I really enjoyed from this book were Mustard Ginger Pork Chops and Minestrone. The pork chops were wonderful - you basically add a simple marinade (pretty easy to do!). The minestrone is wonderful! It is probably my favorite soup ever. It uses ham to give it a smoky flavor, then you add a number of veggies and pasta to it, and top it off with cilantro and parmesan cheese. This is a great soup to make at the beginning of the week and have it for lunch every day for the rest of the week. I've made this soup so many times and I've even tried to freeze it (although I wouldn't recommend that). This is also a good soup to fix ahead of time if you're going to have guests. Add a salad and some bread and you have quite a nice lunch.
Besides the recipes, the photography in this book is amazing. It's quite different than other cookbooks. I would have to consider the photos as "art" because they are of the quality of framed photographic art. I keep thinking of taking this book off of my cookbook shelf and using it as a "coffee table book" because it is so beautiful.
Overall, I would recommend this cookbook to almost anyone. The recipes are simple but elegant and the pictures make the book a joy just to look through.
My most marked up cookbook.......2001-12-20
This book will hardly fit back on the shelf: Yellow post-it notes hang from its margins, nearly a pad-ful so far, each marking a high-taste recipe. I've only had the book a year, but it has fast become a favorite.
Above and Beyond Parsley is just that.......1997-10-25
I have prepared many of the recipes from this book and have found all I have tried to be wonderful. They are easy to follow, and the collection of recipes is diverse and appeals to the most discriminating of tastes. This book also provides visuals on the art of artistic meal presentation. Of the cookbooks that I own, I know if a meal is prepared from this book all will be happy, especially me!

Customer Reviews:
I am just glad that I didn't buy it..........2007-03-11
I almost bought this book because I am interested in the topic. Fortunately, I checked the library and they happened to have a copy. Thank goodness for library cards! Honestly, is there anyone who has ever travelled with a kid who doesn't know to bring a "boredom bag" (a bag with crayons and puzzle books) for a long car trip? Want to know a great place to go with kids? Disney World. Who'd have thought?
I am still looking for the recently published book that has some creative locations for family vacations. But unless you've been on the international space station since they invented the internet, this isn't it.
*Lots* of errors in this book!.......2006-08-15
While there is some good, general, obvious content about planning family travel, there are exentensive factual errors about the actual destinations--stuff that could have easily been verified on the Internet or with a comprehensive travel book. Really sloppy stuff.
Use this to help you plan if you need it, but *not* to research.
Travel Just Became Fun Again! .......2006-02-24
I always get excited about going on vacation...the fun, the adventure, the relaxation, the discovery of new and exotic destinations...sadly, those feelings last about 20 minutes and then it all sinks in. The stress, the anxiety, the planning, the organizing, the scheduling...we've all been there. I've even found myself saying, "Am I just better off staying home?"
Worry no more. Finally, along comes a travel resource that let's you relish in the excitement and forget about the stress. Kaufman's writing is fun and easy-to-follow..with well-organized chapters and well-researched ideas, tips, and travel suggestions. Obviously, this is a woman who has logged her fair share of frequent flier miles and seen the best and the worst that is out there...from hotels to highways.
Setting herself apart from just the average travel guide writer, Kaufman goes beyond the not-to-miss highlights of Walt Disney World and the must-have-meals in New York and successfully tackles what's important to her audience....how to relax, enjoy yourself...and most importantly create memories with your friends and family.
Kaufman is always a leader in family travel...from her website (www.thetravelmom.com) to her TV appearances, and now this publication. This is a valuable resource for moms, dads, and anyone leaving home with a rolling suitcase in tow.
Excellent "Insider" Jumping-off Point.......2006-02-23
Anyone who's ever taken a family vacation knows how complicated and misdirected things can become if you don't have a game plan. Even just chosing a destination can be daunting. This book is such a great jumping-off point to get an overview of so many family-friendly vacation ideas, and then get you pointed in the right direction. She's done the research for me!
A Mom's Best Friend.......2006-02-18
This book is a very handy resource for family travel, and reads like advice from a trusted friend. Not only is it filled with tons of family-friendly destinations, there are a lot of ideas on planning and handling sticky situations. If you have kids, you need this book!

In his groundbreaking bestseller, Real Boys: Rescuing Our Sons from the Myths of Boyhood, Dr. William Pollack delved into the issues that today's boys face, from violence to the limiting notion that boys don't cry. In his follow-up book, Real Boys' Voices, Pollack, a clinical psychologist and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, lets readers get close to his source--the boys themselves, ages 10 to 20, from all around the country. The voices he presents are searingly authentic and eager to be heard. Pollack's basic premise is simple: Despite what society might tell us, boys want to talk. Furthermore, they have a lot to say on a wide variety of topics, including gender issues, friendship, sex, fear of violence, and relationships with their mothers and fathers.
The first and longest section of the book, "The Secret Emotional Lives of Boys," is the most powerful. Boys talk about homophobia--their secret terror that they might be called gay--and of the double life many say they lead: strong and brave on the outside, yet full of worries and angst on the inside. With violence all around them, many boys fear becoming violent themselves. They also describe the intense pressure they feel to lose their virginity and the conflicting feelings they have about sex. "Your virginity is what determines whether you're a man or a boy in the eyes of every teenage male," muses one thoughtful boy, who adds, "It is almost inconceivable to think that your virginity, your one and only innocence, could be your worst enemy." Throughout his book, Pollack offers helpful and concrete suggestions for parents to help their boys lead better lives, including tips on how to deal with bullying behavior and how to recognize signs of depression. While this advice is useful, the true power of this book lies in those very real voices. This is a must-read for parents and for anyone who wants insight into the minds of today's boys. --Virginia Smyth
Book Description
Pollack describes the secret struggles and passions of America's adolescent boys in their own words.
Download Description
In Real Boys, William Pollack took readers into the inner and outer worlds of boys today and explored how to help them break out of society's outmoded "Boy Code." In this new book, the boys speak for themselves on a wide range of topics as Pollack teaches them how to understand their true voices.
Customer Reviews:
It's a very good book!!!.......2007-05-08
This book is really good for us to understand what goes in our boys' mind! They're full of feelings and this book help us how to listen to them.
Not that good.......2004-06-14
I have read about three quarters of this book and my biggest problem with it is that the testimonials by the boys seem really contrived, as if their words have been doctored up or forged. He has interviews with twelve year olds that flow so beautifully and articulately that it actually comes off as very inorganic and makes you wonder whether or not these kids' words have been doctored up. The vocabulary these kids use is often too sophisticated sounding for their age.
Guys Will Talk it Out or Act it Out. HIGHLY Recommended!.......2004-03-07
Real Boys' Voices is a powerful journey into the minds of guys who have been raised to `hold it in' `be a man' `don't show how you really feel' and this sad list has haunted growing boys well into their painful adult years.
Pollack offers EXCEPTIONAL guidance to show us all, parents, peers, teachers, colleagues, and society as a whole to change the paradigm and start to allow boys to be REAL HUMAN BEINGS.
MEN HAVE FEELINGS! One topic that is touched on is that guys are actually being manipulated, and molded to follow, rather than to BE who they authentically are. It is imperative that boys, teen age guys, and all men are honored and ACCEPTED for who they really are, and not what others want them to be. This book brings pivotal advice to anyone who is in the presence of a young man to honor that man, for who he is.
It is a well known fact in psychology that either a person is going to talk it out, or act it out.
We owe it to the guys in our society to allow them the freedom and acceptance of honoring their own truth, and allowing them to express it, even if we may not agree.
By giving guys unconditional love, acceptance, and support on all levels, they WILL grow into men who are whole and complete, and will thus have the capacity to express that in the outer world, which includes being able to be authentic in intimate relationships. If boys are taught to hide their real feelings, how can they EVER know how to be REAL?
This book plays a crucial role in our society for males of all ages. It gets to the heart of the matter, and that is being loved and accepted for who they are. Only then will they know HOW to express their authenticity in their outer life.
BUY THIS BOOK! Highly recommended from my heart, Barbara Rose, author of "Stop Being the String Along: A Relationship Guide to Being THE ONE" and 'If God Was Like Man'
Editor of inspire! magazine
Testimonies to augment theories.......2004-02-03
This is a jarring and eye-opening collection of voices often unheard in our culture. It is highly recommended that this book NOT be read until one has looked at his first REAL BOYS offering. The first work povides the theorectcal context within which these testimonies are most powerful. This is valuable reading not only for counselors and parents, but for pastors, teachers, and all who work with or care about boys and their lives.
Don't bother.......2001-10-10
There have been a dozen or more "boy's books" lately, most notably the exceptional Raising Cain, by Kindlon and Thompson. Most of them are not worth the bother, and this compendium is at the top of that list.

Caring Relief for Boys in Pain.......2004-09-11
Psychologist William Pollack has done an important service in talking with and listening to boys 10-20 across the country about what is important to them and what causes them pain. And they have a lot of pain. In a recent book, Undoing Depression, I learned that there is an epidemic of depression in young people, and these stories certainly underscore that observation. The sources are many: Not being able to share their emotions with others; not wanting to live up to the macho code of the strong, silent type; uncertainties about sex; teasing and being teased; homophobia; pressure to succeed; a lack of spirituality in every day life; being unsure of what kind of man they want to become; fear of causing or experiencing violence; abuse; concerns about body image; addictions; loss; divorce; bigotry; and the lack of creative outlets that are deemed socially appropriate.
I found the stories so painful to read that I could seldom do more than 60 pages in a sitting. Then I would have to take a day or two off. I feel very sad for all of these boys and young men. I do hope you will read this book and follow its lessons. Adults can make a big difference.
The good news is that the boys and young men do want to share their feelings, and they do want advice. But adults have to relate differently to them in order to get them to open up and absorb the new information. Pollack has lots of good advice along that line, and the boys themselves tell about when and how they feel comfortable talking. And talking is important to healing all of this pain, because the boys and young men don't realize that almost every other young person is in pain, as well. So they feel doubly bad by seeing themselves as deficient in some way that others don't experience.
The solutions seem to relate to reducing the stress on the young people and helping them to communicate their feelings. Then, they need to adopt a new ideal of being who they are, not what they think everyone wants them to be. "They want to find people who love them just the way they are."
Some of the many important suggestions include:
(1) Creating many accessible "shame-free" zones. These are places where mentoring can take place where a boy can "unwind, let loose, and be his real self." They need this at home as well as at school. Whenever the emotions overwhelm the young person, he has a place to go for help.
(2) The boy needs an at-home and an at-school mentor who will provide guidance, love, and support. These do not have to be men.
(3) Learn how to help the young person describe what he is feeling.
(4) Share your own doubts about the gender code of being a strong, silent type.
(5) Share you own observations about different ways that it is okay to be a real man.
(6) Build trust.
(7) Mentoring should include physical activities, especially sports, as well as talking.
(8) Help boys and young men to become mentors for others.
(9) Create effective programs to "bully-proof" your neighborhood and schools. The author does not think that zero tolerance programs and expecting the kids to work it out themselves are effective. Here's a good reason to read the book, so that you'll find out how to relieve the pressure of physical and verbal bullying -- it's what makes life a nightmare for so many of these young people.
(10) Encourage spiritual and creative epressions that a meaningful to the young person.
Although this book is about boys and young men, I think that those who are concerned about girls and young women should read it too. Basically, these boys and young men don't sound a lot different than what young women have to say, except they aren't as concerned about being unable to express their feelings and having unwanted sex being forced on them. You'll get a lot of insight into helping females deal with the young males in their families, lives, and schools. I suspect that there are parenting clues here also for parents of daughters. I certainly picked up some pointers that I think would help my relationship with my younger daughter.
Whatever you do, overcome your denial that because your son or grandson doesn't complain, that he is not in pain. Only if you and he can talk openly about his feelings can you check to see if he needs pain relief. I suggest that you assume that he does need help in this area, until proven otherwise.

Reproduced here for the first time, the intimate letters written by Stanford White (1853-1906) reveal much more about the private man than about his public persona as a fashionable Gilded Age architect and socialite. This captivating collection of candid letters, assembled and preserved by the architect's son, span nearly 50 years, from White's childhood to shortly before his untimely death (he was murdered in 1906). Many of the letters appear in facsimile reproduction and include architectural sketches and other drawings from White's travels in the United States, Mexico, and Europe. This volume, which also reproduces photographs and watercolors, adds valuable insight into the life of one of the most prominent architects in late 19th-century America. Of particular interest are the letters penned to the two people White was closest to--his mother and his wife--drawing an engaging, funny, and charming self-portrait. Writing from Paris in 1878, and reproaching himself for not having written sooner, he begins a letter to his mother with, "I ought to have my head punched and be sat on generally."
Book Description
These letters and sketches by Stanford White were left by Lawrence Grant White, when he died in 1956. He had mounted them in beautiful leather-bound books, each impetuously scribbled letter accompanied by a typewritten transcription. It was so obviously the labor of love and admiration of a son for his father that this alone made them precious.
