5 out of 5 stars Microbiology text, It helped me........2006-06-22

I like this book. Microbiology is very fascinating to me. Parasites, etc are particularly interesting. If you are assigned this book for your Microbiology class, my advice is to read it and know the information. This book was very helpful.

I also used a study guide "Microbiology Study Guide Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This book has awesome questions for studying during the semester and really gets you ready for the exams.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of information....disorganized.......2006-04-03

I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.

4 out of 5 stars Great Service!.......2006-03-13

I ordered this book on a Friday for a class that started the following Monday and it was here first thing Monday morning. The book is in excellent condition. I would use this seller again!

3 out of 5 stars Not enough information.......2006-03-10

I believe that the best way to learn science is to fully understand all the concepts. That way, it is easier to remember details and to apply your knowledge. For some reason, less advanced science courses focus on covering the same breadth of information less in-depth, rather than handling fewer topics and putting more effort into understanding. This book follows that trend. While some issues are explained, much more is left up to the reader to simply memorize. Not an ideal textbook, but sufficient.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to read! Exciting way to teach Geography........2000-04-05

A lot of fun to read, which is why I found one exception. Nada, Texas, is a Czech word for "Hope". It is pronounced "nay-da". Which means it can't be on your pessimistic map. A small point, I know, and only someone from this 97 person community would know this. What a wonderful collection! I bought the book because it has Nada, and many other wonderful communities divided into great maps! Wouldn't it be great to write about how these different places got their strange names!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book and a good for a laugh anytime........1998-01-04

I did a whole Social Studies project around this book. It is very funny and interesting. I especially liked the pessimistic map. It had cities like Hell, Michigan. So, if you are interseted in U.S. geography and need a good laugh, I recommend this book to you.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book.......1998-12-20

This is the worst investment book that I ever bought. How the author ever managed to get published is beyond me. Example: "Way #XX: Don't buy on margin, it's too complicated." There may be reasons not to buy on margin, but come on. I honestly got the impression that margin was too complicated for the author to understand. He gave a money example, showing how you will loose on margin even when the stock price rises that was just flat out wrong. I couldn't believe it.

4 out of 5 stars tells it like it is.......1998-12-04

a very factual to the point book. very unlike most books about the markets which are mostly author biographies, war stories, and personal opinions. this one gives a good illustration of how peddlers and sharks of the business work their craft.

Cabinetmaking at the highest level is an art, a discipline, a philosophy—even a way of life—in addition to being a useful craft. In this book one of the greatest living cabinetmakers reflects on the deeper meanings of his craft and explains for less accomplished workers how the right attitudes toward materials, tools, and time can increase the joys of this complex activity. Craftspeople in every medium will be inspired by this account of getting started and developing habits that lessen the difficulties of a complex craft.

4 out of 5 stars Great woodworkers read.......2007-05-30

Not a practical cabinet making how to book, but not intended to be. This is a wonderful book of philosophy and idealism designed to inspire artistry in wood. It is easy to see and catch Krenov's passion for producing beauty.

5 out of 5 stars The Wood Comes First.......2006-04-09

As woodworking books go, James Krenov's "A Cabinet Maker's Notebook" is an anomaly. What you won't find is any detailed plan on how to build Krenov cabinets. On fact, what you will find is the reason why you won't find step-by-step instructions. This is as close as woodworking comes to a philosophy book. Krenov is sharing the inside of his head, and his head doesn't quite work like anyone else's. It is a chance to look at the why's, not the how.

Krenov's life has been a serendipitous one, living in Siberia, Alaska, Sweden, and parts in between. And holding a number of jobs while he was at it. The result is a woodworker who has had so many influences that his style has become unique and often imitated. But imitating James Krenov is a lost task unless you are willing to work and think the way he does. And, as truth would have it, if you would do that you would be a fine craftsman, but your work would be different from Krenov's, and that would be the point.

Krenov the woodworker is a careful meticulous man who does much of his work with hand tools. One who accumulates wood and makes it part of the family, waiting patiently until idea and material gel in his mind. Then, with a few rough sketches in hand, produced another of his pieces that he will be quick to tell you are unobtrusive, soft, and friendly. They are also unmistakably Krenov's in their subtlety and total commitment to craftsmanship.

This book is about many aspects of Krenov's like - his love for wood and cats, his personal history, and his philosophy. There is one sizeable section where he talks about several of his pieces - quick tours that may very well leave you stunned when you realize the completeness of his vision. If I just once accomplish something as beautiful as a Krenov cabinet what a proud wood shaper I will be.

5 out of 5 stars an inspiration to an age..........2006-02-17

I just read the book. It is a personal statement, and an inspiration to those who wish to do fine woodworking, and learn attitudes that will help you excel at whatever you do. Just as weightlifting helps your strength overall, this book helps you improve your outlook on life, your work ethic, and most importantly, how to deal with the struggles of frustration and finishing long difficult projects. I was surprised to read that he was plagued by self-doubt regarding his ability for many yrs. He talks here about his childhood, parents, and how he met his wife, so it's more personal. His cabinet work is astounding in its attention to detail, and he can literally work with thousandths of an inch by hand...as well as design beautiful pieces, work with wood grain, types of wood, etc. This book covers the personal, emotional, ethical, environmental, and even spiritual aspects of fine craftsmanship and personal fulfillment. Does it have all the answers? No, he himself says he can't tell you whether or not to "sell out" and do fast, cheap, commercial work. But his insights, intelligence, and experience can go a long way to help you work out these issues for yourself, as we all must do at one time or another. Read this book, then "The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking" which discusses details of how to sharpen planes, chisels, select wood, etc. A must-read for any thoughtful craftsman....

              5 out of 5 stars Another Essential.......2005-12-08

Another of the essential books for woodworkers. Even if you don't like the style of Krenov's work you can't help but be touched by his philosophy and be a better woodworker because of it. This is the authors most philosophical work but don't let that scare you - there's noting dry or academic here - just good advice on loving what you do. Another classic.

5 out of 5 stars The most influential modern book on cabinetmaking.......2004-09-03

The most influential modern book on cabinetmaking, July 9, 1998
              Reviewer: A reader
First published in 1975, The Cabinetmaker's Notebook is a modern classic for those who wish to pursue cabinetmaking as a mode of sensitive self-expression. That may seem like a mouthful, but you either build cabinets because you need to store things, or for some less practical reason. As Red Green says "If your wife doesn't find you handsome, she should at least find you handy". That is one reason beyond the practical, A kind of I want to impress people stage. But when you get beyond that; the house is full of furniture, and your wife actually wishes you would come in from the shop once in a while, what keeps you out there? If it is a desire to do your best work, with the best tools and wood you can find then this book may be for you.
Why do I call it the most influential book of its kind? Well partly because it influenced me, but it also struck a cord when it first came out in the seventies and the woodworking revival was underway. It is pretty much as valid today as then. Krenov, who grew up in the U.S., wrote these books while living in Sweden. They proved so popular that a school was created stateside at which he still teaches. Krenov's insights are of some use to people who pursue other crafts.

The most likely volumes to share shelf space with this and other Krenov books are; George Nakashima The Soul of a Tree (worth it for the pictures alone) and Sam Maloof Woodworker (ditto)

                          Book Description

Now in its third edition, this classic guide is expanded and updated to feature new material on dealing with trauma and devastation, addressing violence in schools, helping grandparents cope as caregivers, and an enlarged quick-reference "Crisis Section" with scripts, answers, and messages for young ones. Dr. Daniel Schaefer, working with child psychologists and trauma experts, and drawing on more than three decades of experience with families in crisis, has put together a practical guide for anyone who works or lives with children-parents, caregivers, counselors, or teachers-for dealing with children's inevitable questions about loss and change, life and death. He informs adults how to help young ones cope with the trauma of loss and offers time-tested, valuable advice on how to explain and console children in a language that they can understand. The book includes sections on what children think about death; explaining death to children; fear, confusion, and sadness; grief and healing; the funeral and saying good-bye; talking about AIDS; and talking to children with mental illness.

5 out of 5 stars How to Help Grieving Children.......2001-09-15

This is a clearly written book by a funeral director and psychologist. It provides helpful suggestions to parents and caregivers on how to inform children of death in many different situations. It respects the child's need to know what has happened in a way that is appropriate for his or her age. It discusses listening to children's thoughts and feelings and addressing common misperceptions. There is an excellent quick reference crisis section at the end of the book that clearly outlines various kinds of deaths, suggestions as to how to explain them to children in different age groups, and how to prepare them for what comes next. This is an excellent book to guide parents whose own grief may be interfering with their thinking about how to help their children. As a grief counselor at the Barr-Harris Children's Grief Center, I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars good advice, narrow perspective.......2000-04-28

This book has excellent information about what children at each stage of development are likely to think and feel about the death of someone close to them. However, the suggested ways of dealing with those feelings were somewhat limited, and allowed little flexibility for differing family circumstances. For example, the book is extremely critical of ways religious families may choose to explain death to children, claiming that many religiously based explanations may lead a child to believe the person may be coming back someday. The book also asserts that a closed casket is the ultimate form of denial of the death, and that even young children should attend funerals. Many recommendations, like the three mentioned above, might or might not be right for a family trying to cope with a death. Overall a good resource for understanding a child's possible perceptions, but not so good for determining how to address them.

In his ribald autobiography, Hallam, an internationally famous artist living on Nantucket Island, leads us on a delightful journey through his artistic escapades in England, France, Italy, and the United States.

Getting To Nantucket: An Artist's Journey is Kerry Hallam's lively and funny autobiography. Beginning in a frigid industrial town in northern England and ending on a picturesque New England island, Hallam's is a personal success story that engages the total attention of the reader as his perceptive eye and artistic spirit takes us from his dead-end job in London, to an accidental music career on the French Riviera and in German, followed by life as an itinerant artist across the United States. Like his watercolors, Hallam's biographical vignettes are vivid, memorable sketches. Getting To Nantucket treats us to an amusing account of an artist's evolutions; a series of hilarious predicaments involving celebrities, aristocrats, and steely-eyed gendarmes, along with a little light-hearted and insightful social commentary. Getting To Nantucket is greatly enjoyable reading from first page to last.

I read this book because it referred to Nantucket---the place I now call home. What I hadn't anticipated, though, was learning from its pages that much of what makes Nantucket seem so special derives from what all those of us who discover it had to go through in order to arrive here. Mr. Hallam's tale truly is no mere "travelogue", but that of a journey, which both forms and reveals character by the sheer requisite of living through it.

And what a journey he describes! From the bleak, dismal North of England, Mr. Hallam managed to pull himself up by his bootstraps, shake off the dreary prospects of living the life expected of him, and embark on an odyssey of self-discovery through art and music. No matter what the circumstances, Hallam seems never to have lost a sense for what is sensual, what is vibrant, what is most human about the human experience.

Although the context of "Getting to Nantucket" deals with overcoming all of the challenges that daunted him, Hallam's witty narrative is utterly bereft of "doom and gloom". In fact, it is not only amusing, it's often hysterically funny. This is not a book to be read in a public library unless you are prepared to deal with hearing "shush!" repeatedly as you laugh out loud.

I wouldn't recommend "Getting to Nantucket" to my close friends... for the simple reason that I'll probably just get them each a copy. I will, however, have to keep mine in the car---so if I recognize Mr. Hallam from his photo on the dust jacket I'll have it on hand for him to autograph.

5 out of 5 stars Beacoming an artist: what hard work!.......2000-03-29

Anyone who thinks that becoming a "real" artist isn't hard work has never read Kerry Hallam's earnest and funny book, "Getting To Nantucket: An Artist's Journey." He takes us from his youth in northern England's rust belt, through his life as a workaday designer, and then shares his epiphany: the decision to throw caution to the winds, sell everything he owned, and set off to become a successful artist. What inspired me was the fact that no matter what else he had to do to grub a living -- which included singing at restaurants for tips -- Hallam never deserted his first love: painting. This book is a "must read" for every aspiring artist -- and even more importantly, for every artist who, as Hallam often did, feels as though their artistic career has run into a roadblock. Hallam never gave up, and yes, he made it to the artistic "big time." But he never lost his down-to-earth values, his kind heart, or, thank goodness, his wicked British sense of humor.
