I bought this book in conjunctioin with a business planning course taught by the author. I'm usually not a fan of most law books, but this book presents valuable content in a manner accessible to both law and business students.

This book is targeted towards Lawyers who are doing valuation for tax purposes (have a court case where valuation is disputed). This book is full of references court cases which is not what I expect from a Valuation book. The "and Taxes" should have given it away but I figured it had to do something how valuation changes due to taxes. I would not buy this book if you actually need to do valuation. No examples whatsoever.

Buy it if you are a lawyer working on a Valuation case. Otherwise this book not for you.

I received this book when I was a child, in the 1960s. I would pull it out on a nothing-to-do day and spend hours poring over it. I still have that copy, and still love it. The photos are delightful. This book is a must for any cat lover.

engaging combination of essay and biography.......2007-04-03

Other reviewers have singled out comparatively minor mistakes in Watson's book, and some have complained about the way he injects himself into Descartes's story. But I like the way Watson makes it personal, recounting stories from his travels and laying out his own philosophical attitudes in some punchy prose. I suppose if someone wants a cold retelling of the facts of Descartes's life, another book would be better. But as a long personal essay that aims to explain why the author finds his subject so interesting, I think it's very well done, and a good read.

The Greek poet Ovid.......2006-07-09

I have read Watson's book up till page 72, waiting for it to get better and more relevant. We hear a lot, for instance about the author's stay in a rented house in Franeker, about Dutch licorice and bread, about the family line of Descartes -his great-great uncles, and so on-, but nothing on Descartes' philosophy. That may come after page 72. I don't know. I stopped there, because Watson at that point argues that Descartes at La Flèche will have read "the Greek authors Ovid and Seneca the Tragic". That did it for me. I quitted.

a disgrace.......2005-11-30

Richard Watson certainly seems like an amiable man, a great asset for your vernissage, your cocktail party, or any other function that merits a lively imagination above actual knowledge. I won't bore you stiff by addressing every blatant error in this book: it will suffice to say that our Prof. Disney has, single-handedly, come up with an entirely new successor to Prince Frederick-Henry of Orange (1584 - 1647): a certain Henry III. All it takes is a monkey (Descartes would have loved that) with a computer, to google himself to enlightenment: that the good prince Frederick Henry was in fact succeeded by his son William II, who was succeeded by his son, William III, Prince of Orange and King of England, Schotland and Ireland. 'Elementary, my dear Watson'. (And no, Richard: Descartes didn't meet Huygens in 1630, they first met in 1635, and no, no, Richard: 'Stadhouder' is not quite the same as 'Commander-in-Chief', and no, no, no, Richard: Constantijn Huygens served two, not three Stadhouders as first secretary, etc. etc.). All this nonsense in one page (160).

In Cogito Ergo Sum, Richard Watson, a distinguished Cartesian scholar and a former professor of philosophy at Washington University in St. Louis, takes us on a grand journey across Europe as he follows in the footsteps of Rene Descartes, the Father of Modern Philosophy.
Descartes's motto was that a life well hidden is a life well lived, but after forty years of extensive research, Watson takes Descartes's well hidden life and reveals it to us as no one else has. From his birth to his death, we learn about the life and times of Descartes. We read of Descartes's skills as a card shark, of his smoking pot, the fathering of his daughter, his romances, his travels, his inventions, his math skills, and all of the good times and bad times that come his way. Watson also debunks many of the long-standing stories associated with Descartes. Even for the casual reader, Watson's clear and colloquial writing style entertains us as if he were Descartes' own friend. And through it all we learn not only about Descartes, but also of Europe as it develops during Descartes's lifetime.
Watson also describes his own amusing adventures as he travels across Europe during his research for this book. In his quest to visit all fourteen of the farms that were owned by the Descates family, Watson and his wife, Patty Jo, test their hiking skills as they tromp through the Alps and along trails with sheer drops of 800 feet. Watson is no stranger to adventure. He is also the author of the classic American cave adventure, The Longest Cave.
Cogito Ergo Sum is one of those books that you enjoy more every time you read it. With this book, Watson has raised the bar for which all other Descartes biographies will be judged.

A Lifetime's Work.......2005-05-28

This biography is a rich and wonderful achievement. It clearly represents the fruit of a lifetime's devotion to studying one of the great philosophers. Watson, unlike other biographers of Descartes -- and, remarkably, there are not many -- decides to get the life right. To this end, he not only went to the archives, but personally traced Descartes's itinerary across Europe. The result is a highly readable, entertaining, beautifully written narrative, one that corrects many of the myths and errors that had crept into earlier studies. The New York Public Library named it one of the 25 best books of the year in 2002 -- it's no wonder why.

By far the best "Interviews with Money Managers" book.......2003-06-12

Tanous's effort is far superior to the other collections of interviews with money managers. Most books of this sub-genre fall into two categories, depending on the author. The first type of author is usually a journalist who knows little about the disciplines of stock picking and running investment funds, and you are usually hard pressed to find any new insight in their books, because they don't know how to ask their subjects the really insightful questions. The second type, which I'll call the John Train style, has a sophisticated investor/fund consultant doing the interviews, and can often produce real insight from the interviewees. The problem with many of these books, and Train's in particular, is that the author is often not trying to interview the successful money managers. Instead, authors like Train are often trying to play gotcha! with their interviewees, subjecting them to asinine questions and frequently diverging from the topics that made you buy their book in the first place. The Money Masters by Train is so full of political tangents and Train's forcing his opinion on the likes of Peter Lynch and Warren Buffett that I've wanted to scream at him at some points.

In contrast, Tanous knows how to ask questions that are of interest to professional and serious amateur investors, and he knows how to stay on topic. He does ask every interviewee about the efficient market hypothesis, but that's a theme of his book and can be excused. What you get from Tanous is an interviewer who knows how to ask really penetrating, really revealing questions of the world's best money managers, and the humility to realize that his readers don't want to know what he, Tanous, thinks, but what his interviewees think! What's more, he managed to get interviews with at least two money managers--Bruce Sherman of Private Capital Management and Scott Sterling Johnston of Sterling Johnston Asset Management--that have excellent track records but who speak very, very rarely to the press. There is real value to Tanous's book, and I'm a better investor for having read it. Serious investors should still read Train's books for their revealing interviews with Buffett, Templeton, Lynch and others, but in Tanous's book, you have all the strengths of the Train books without any of the that author's obvious, glaring shortcomings as a writer and interviewer.

Very amusing!.......2001-05-25

Most of the interviews in this book appear to have been conducted in 1996.

I checked as many of the managers/funds as I could on Morningstar (some of managers have private equity funds, and therefore are not available on Morningstar), and it appears that most of the managers described here have underperformed the market since 1996. Some of the funds (e.g. Linder) have gone out of business or dramatically restructured due to poor performace. Since one of the major themes of the book is to pit the efficient market theory/passive manager (Fama/French/DFA) types against active managers, and the author seems to side with active managers over passive, this is very amusing. It seems that time has proven the contrary of the point the author chose to make.

Peter Tanous features interviews with 18 individuals he identifies as top, common stock investment consultants - or "gurus." His choices are based on his work as a consultant identifying investment advisers for corporations. The consultants he selected for this book represent the major stock investing approaches as growth, value or momentum investors. The interview format lets them speak for themselves. He briefly introduces the book with a primer on basic investment terms and principles, and a summary of major themes. We at getAbstract find the range of views shown very helpful, but note that the book suffers from overwriting and a lack of focus and editing. Some tightening would help highlight the main points in the long interviews. The introduction and conclusion are long and general, and a clearer, more detailed summary would be very welcome. Yet, the book offers a lot of information for the average serious investor, much of it straight from the mouths of some very important horses.

A terrific book, full of conservative, sensible investment advice, on both growth and value investing on ordinary shares. The overall information provides the need for a complete review of many small investors speculative/gambling approach to investing, and replacement with a conservative yet successful trading plan.

Concise and Insightful. A must read for any manager........2003-09-25

This book is the one place to get all the information you needed for Performance Management. The author outlines how combining the traditional role of CFO and CIO, into the Chief Performance Officer can increase business value.
If you try to get this information from other books or industry analysts (ie. Gartner, Meta, Giga) there is no clear methodology on how to implement a program like this. This book offered the one-stop shopping for perormance management.
I like the short case studies in each chapter, since they drive home how people are really doing this.
It is a detailed enough book to get the right information, but overburdened with academic theories which can never be applied in business.
I would love to see a follow-on book for more case studies and the CPO in action.

Although recognized as one of the greatest French composers of the twentieth century, Albert Roussel (1869-1937) has been frequently overlooked in recent years. However, the publication of this bibliography coincides with a renewed interest, especially in Roussel's native land, in recording his compositions. While the majority of English-language works on Roussel have concentrated on the details of his life or attempted to define and analyze his compositional style, this first annotated bibliography and discography focuses on his opus and provides copious information about specific works, performances, recordings, and reviews. Born in Tourcoing, France, Roussel received recognition for his compositions as early as 1897. His productivity soared during the 1920s, when his work was influenced by Impressionism, and his neo-classical compositions of the 1930s achieved national recognition. The work commences with a biography, and then presents a listing voice, and includes a directory of publishers. A discography, broken into similar divisions, follows. The annotated bibliography covers books and articles about Roussel, program notes, and writings by the composer.
