Book Description
Compared to the dangerous, rage-filled military of today, where even the hint of homosexuality will get one badly beaten or savagely murdered, mine were almost halcyon days as an openly gay Airman First Class, where my boyfriend and I could be together and everybody in my flight knew about us.
They could have been halcyon days, that is, if it hadn’t been for the madness of the war and the schizophrenia of the American public over that southeast Asian conflict; and if it hadn’t been for the wife I left back home and the child we had. What should have been idyllic days of my youth spent proudly serving my country as a gay soldier were misspent, instead, trying to make sense of what had gone so terribly wrong, so fast: one day I was a gay college student, the next a self-loathing homosexual trapped in a straight marriage, and the next a GI in the military machine during Vietnam.
Come to think of it, I wouldn't change a thing.

Review of "My Year of Living Heterosexually..." by Cheri.......2004-06-27
"My Year of Living Heterosexually and other Adventures in Hell" is the memoir of best-selling author Ronald L. Donaghe before and during his tour in the United States Air Force during the last years of the Vietnam War.
My Year offers a different perspective of what it was like to be in the military during a war which the American people were not particularly proud. On top of that, he tells what it meant to be gay in an extremely homophobic environment. Donaghe does an amazing job of enlightening the clueless public.
This is his own account of getting married to suppress his homosexuality only to realize the enormity of his mistake. Donaghe is seduced by an older, divorced mother of two who knew he was gay before she married him. She was convinced the right woman could "cure" his homosexual proclivity. Being disillusioned by the gay scene at the time, he acquiesced. He then joined the air force to get away from his wife and marital duties. Later, he used his sexual orientation to escape the service.
Donaghe provides us with an eye-opening, honest and graphic depiction of the potentially dangerous assignments enforced by the Pentagon on the men and women of the military. He was assigned a job after basic training working long, grueling, tedious hours in a lab. This lab's only purpose was to test tens of thousands of urine samples per day for the presence of drugs. These "important" tasks were being performed at the same time men were being killed and maimed in combat. The conditions of the lab were horrendous with noxious fumes and carcinogenic chemicals. A daily working environment such as this may not kill instantly like a bullet but who knows what the long term affects on health are?
This book deals not only with coming out to the military but of coming full circle towards accepting and loving oneself as an out and proud gay man. It is a story about finding love--the love that is meant to be--and not necessarily manufactured to fit in with societal mores.
Donaghe is often funny and makes this an enjoyable read, but most of all, he teaches us to be truthful to ourselves and not let others define our self worth. Only by being proud of who we are can we achieve our greatest contribution to society. It also offers hope that maybe someday GLBT people will be welcome in the military and receive the same rights and privileges as heterosexuals and not be persecuted for who they are and who they love. Ronald Donaghe was very fortunate he was granted an honorable discharge, although without distinction. He was not treated as poorly as many other homosexuals in the military at that time--men and women whose only crime was wanting to serve their country. By writing this book he hopes to educate people so that discrimination will finally cease to exist. Don't miss this honest and open account of a man who strives to make a difference. A man who has learned from his mistakes and has shared what he has learned with others. A man who has positively influenced the lives of those who are fortunate to know him and to the many others who read this well-written, heartfelt biography.
He bares his soul, shares his life........2002-02-04
For Ron's fans from his fiction books, this book is a must read. Actually, reading this before you read his fiction would let you see from where many of his characters and settings had been derived. You'll see the father from "Uncle Sean" in Ron's father, Joel's mother and father in Ron's mother and father, Tom's caring for the garden in Ron's life, and many others. It makes his fiction even more enjoyable.
Many of us have been through some of the experiences Ron has, and sharing them with him as you read through the book will bring back many memories, some regrets, and a few laughs. His "'bad' years" in the laboratory, the friendships he formed, the search for living his life under the structure of the military, all of these will enrich your understanding of man striving to be himself.
I'm glad Ron had the courage to share his story. Also check out his "Letters in Search of Love". That book elaborates more on his life and thoughts.
Back in the Days When No One Asked, But Soldiers Could Tell!.......2002-01-23
What's a lesbian doing reading a gay memoir?
Enjoying the honesty and humor of a well-written life story.
Ronald L. Donaghe may be better known for his fiction (The Blind Season, Common Sons, Uncle Sean), but his own life story certainly lacks for no excitement. As an Airman First Class during the early 1970's, Donaghe writes about a slice of time in his life when he was nowhere near as comfortable with his sexual orientation as he must be now, given the fact that he has become a bestselling gay fiction writer since then.
The narrative is well-written and peppered with pithy observations. With honesty, he explains what it was like to be young, gay, and closeted from his family and friends--and even from himself. In denial, he married young and fathered a child before coming to grips with that folly. One would think that joining the military would have been yet another misstep, but instead, the military atmosphere actually assisted him with coming to grips with and accepting his sexual orientation as well as extricating himself from a bad marriage.
I found some of the boot camp description rather droll, and it was amusing to learn that so many soldiers during the Vietnam era were too high on drugs to care about Donaghe's sexual orientation. Nowadays, being "out" in the military often brings attacks and court martial. For Donaghe, it seems that the U.S. Military served as a safe place where he could come to terms with his sexuality.
Like Ricardo Brown's recent memoir, THE EVENING CROWD AT KIRMSER'S, about gay life in 1940's St. Paul, Ronald Donaghe tells another piece of the gay experience, this time from a soldier's point-of-view. I highly recommend his honest and forthright memoir and think it deserves a place in the canon.

A true story that makes important points.......2001-05-25
After reading and loving three of Ronald L. Donaghe's novels, I thought it would be interesting to read this book about a year that changed his life. Donaghe's autobiography reads like those novels, complete with vivid descriptions and frequent dialogue. It also includes Donaghe's observations about homophobia, gays in the military, and the attempts of some gays to "go straight." Donaghe uses his experiences and those of the people around him to make those observations. However, he does so without turning this fast-paced narrative into an academic essay. I agree with the points that Donaghe makes, but even people who disagree can benefit from and enjoy this fascinating document about one man's experiences with marriage, family, the military, self-loathing, and self-acceptance.
Book Description
Robert Koch's story is a stirring example of how a lone country doctor can rise above all odds to become a true scientific revolutionary. Winner of the Nobel Prize in 1905, Koch is best known today for his discoveries of the causal agents of tuberculosis, cholera, and anthrax. His vital contributions to microbiological methodology also make him the founder of the field of bacteriology and central to the establishment of the disciplines of hygiene and public health. He was also a world traveler and made numerous important research expeditions to India (where he discovered the cause of cholera), Africa, and New Guinea. Koch's postulates, a series of guidelines for the experimental study of infectious disease, permitted Koch and his students to identify many of the causes of the most important infectious diseases of humans and animals. Even today Koch's postulates are considered whenever a new infectious disease arises.

Robert Koch: a life in medicine and bacteriology.......2003-09-21
Writing scientific historical biography that is readable is a difficult task, and Prof. Brock has suceeded in this.
A great book about a great man, that in simple language communicates the excitement of a revolutionary time in medicine where a few people in the space of 20 years changed our world forever.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down, and this is in part due to the author communicating his own enthusiasm for his subject. If you are looking for a gift for anyone working in bioscience or biomedicine then you couldn't do better than this book.

the start of it all.......2001-07-09
Fit for life, and Suzanne Sommers must have read this book at some point in their career. This book seems to be the source for everything written about NH today.
good lord! He's right! Try it yourself!.......2000-07-21
This is a marvelous easy to read short guide book! Talk about a shift! Although food combining is quite widely known among nutritionists and h0olistic medicine practitioners, Western doctors know nothing about it. That's why you hear the doctors say "Take a little bit of everything in a meal" or "Drink a glass of water or fluid (milk?) after a meal". That's bull! Try that and I assure you you'll feel bloated, get stomach cramp, indigestion, fatigue all together. I respect Dr Shelton for sticking to his view on nutrition despite the attack of medical practitioners, because he knows his view is correct. Do you know studies have shown that MORE people in the West (esp America) with their 'rich' diet suffer from MALNUTRITION, compared to those in poor places in Mexico and India! Wrong combination of food in your body makes the food undigested, ferment, rot and then stick to your large intestine for months & years! That's why OBESITY and MALNUTRITION is such a problem! And Western doctors are puzzled why this is so! The regular Western meal of a hamburger with fries and milkshake breaks at least 6 rules in the food combining guideline! Breaking just 1 is enough to make you malnourished! Anyway, try food combining for a few days and see the result yourself! You'll be amazed! GOod on ya, Dr Shelton!
Bold book that shatters old beliefs.......2000-06-12
This book challenges our daily eating habits of mixing different type of food in one meal. New research has shown that mixing different kinds of food in one go can rob you of energy instead of giving you energy! Do you feel fatigue and sleepy after that big meal of rice with meat with eggs and fish during lunch? You bet! Then after that you constipate! I've made a guinea pig of myself and found it to be true! If I combine my food properly, I don't feel sleepy after lunch, even if it was a big meal!Today, more and more people are discovering the importance of food combining, and many authors are recommending it. See books like "The Tao Of Health, Sex and Longevity" by Daniel Reid. Food combining is one of the most important thing Tony Robbins did to make his vitality explode! Here's a way to see for yourself that it works. Try the strategies of this book a few days, note your energy level and how you feel. Then go back to eating egg with meat and rice or steak with potato, and you'll see the huge difference. Remember this, you eat to gain energy, not to lose it! I recommend this precious book to anyone who wants to change his health and vitality.
The missing cornerstone to healthy eating........1999-01-07
This is a must have simple book for anyone wanting to change there health, weight or attitude with diet. His clinical work shows that what foods you eat together make a huge difference between a meal's constructive or a destructive effects on your body. When I started following his guidelines I got clearer, more energy and alertness in days. When I stray (holidays etc.) the body feels heavy, slugish in and hour. A wonderful simple essential book.

Sensible Eating.......2005-09-18
When I first heard of the Hay Diet, I thought it provided the ultimate answers to all the questions I had asked over many years of experience in practical eating but had never found elsewhere.
As a student of experimental science at various levels over a quarter of a century it always amazed me that we ordinary mortals daily shove virtually anything down our throats and never seem to worry if the items involved are compatible with one another or if combining them is conducive to good health.
Jackie Habgood's book recognises the sensible reality that all foods are not friendly to all others and she explains the basic theory of keeping proteins and carbohydrates apart and of the probable undesirable effects of not facing the facts.
But her book is a gem in turning the theory into an easily digestible programme for daily eating. A great book and a great buy.
Better Than the Food Combining Bible.......2005-08-21
The fact that this book was written in the UK, makes some of its language a bit foreign, however, it is still an informative book. Very direct presentation. No recipes, not much in the way of menus, but compared to The Food Combining Bible, it is, in my opinion, much easier to understand.
Searching for great health.......2005-06-23
The Hay Diet Made Easy is in english.... but not american. I think there are a few things that get's "lost in translation." The british slang was hard to follow. The writting style in this book does not "flow", I found it "choppy". But other than that.... It was informational.
Good information, but not particularly well written.......2004-01-11
I totally agree with the reviewer that said the sections tend to run together and aren't laid out real well. The information seems to come at you haphazardly. It reminds me of getting information second-hand from an aunt. One is always left wondering if she's remembering to explain it all.
I understood the Hay Diet before I read this book, and I think that may be a good thing. While the basic diet is shown in a single chart on page 12, it is so basic that I wonder if readers will understand. The really helpful chart is on page 98, which again breaks down the basic diet.
Chapters 2,3 and 4 are about using the diet to treat various ailments. While that may be true, I felt that the diet wasn't yet satisfactorily explained. Those chapters, it seems to me, should have been at the end of the book.
On the other hand, the book is chock-full of really practial advice for implementing the diet as a lifestyle. There are many menus, with an emphasis on creating your own menu ideas.
I suspect that I will refer to the book again and again as I search for more food ideas.
new start.......2000-05-22
This book makes the hay Diet easy to understand and it really does help. I have had major allergy problems for years and when I stick to this diet and take some vitamins from my naturopath I feel fine. It gives recipes and examples of menu planning. Try it to improve your health!

Customer Reviews:
I'm very pleased with this book and the ordering of it........2007-02-03
I'm very pleased with the book and the promptness of the delivery. I've no complaints at all.
My favorite quilting book.......2005-11-22
I really like this book. Whether you are a machine or hand quilter the patterns are fun and challenging. I am just beginning to machine quilt and the stitch in a ditch patterns help alot. I still like hand quilting better though. Each time I look at this book I think of different color combinations I could use. If you're a quilter you know this could be dangerous.
Great on assembly, but less than three pages on Machine Quilting!.......2005-11-05
I would like to give this book two separate ratings. As a basic how-to-make-quilts book, it deserves perhaps four stars. It's got nice, clear instructions on the basics of how to assemble a variety of simple quilt blocks.
However.
As a book on "New Techniques for Machine Quilting," as the subtitle says, it barely deserves one star. There are precisely 2.75 pages devoted to how to quit your quilt, and most of that is devoted to stiching in the ditch. That's it! There's talk about how this book will help you quilt sections of the quilt before it's assembled, but the info on that part is sketchy, wordy, confusing, and short (3.25 pages) - I really need some pictures or summaries to make sense of it better. I bought this book for help on the quilting, not the patchwork, so I'm a bit disappointed.
GREAT BOOK.......2005-07-19
At the time I purchased Block by Block, I also purchased two other "quilt as you go" books. This is, by far, the ONLY book I would have needed!!!
You are able to quilt one block at a time...so I am able to really get into machine quilting.
Then, there are instructions for connecting the blocks...to make any size quilt from a wall hanging to a king size!!!
I am really impressed with the clear directions and the ease in machine quilting! I LOVE to hand quilt...but with this technique...I will be able to make some faster quilts from time to time...and we all need a "fast quilt" now and then!
WOW.......2002-08-27
This book is GREAT! The instructions are very clear. I love the yardage chart, it takes out the guess work. These instructions on how to quilt block by block can be applied to any quilt pattern. This was the best purchase ever.

Wally the mole, a natural expert on the earth beneath the soil's surface, introduces kids to the wonders of plants and gardening.
After a lifetime spent tunneling through the hidden roots of backyard gardens, Wally engagingly teaches kids about the amazing and often magical world of plants. He describes the different types of plants according to how new ones are created; explains why plants need water and sunlight to thrive; differentiates between herbs and weeds; and provides information on unusual species, such as cacti, plants that are mobile, and those that consume insects. Finally, our aproned host invites kids to get started on gardening, advising which basic gardening tasks can be accomplished in each of the four seasons and what tools young gardeners will need for the job.
Combining thorough, informational text with hundreds of color illustrations and diagrams, this colorful book gives kids 8 to 12 a strong introduction to the world of the green and leafy. Young readers not only learn to identify a myriad of plants but also discover the miracle of nature happening in their own backyards. Dangerously out of date.......2007-08-26
Although the current printing is from 2007, this book was first printed in 1998, the year Viagra came out. Although it covers all the vitamins, minerals and over-the-counter supplements, from gingko biloba through yohimbe to zinc, it does not mention Viagra! It does cover the use of testosterone replacement in detail, but the information is too old to be trusted. Beware!
For me depression was the huge issue.......2007-08-25
For the past year and a half I have suffered from delbilitating major depression. I am 49 and I was being treated with antidepressants with no success whatsoever. I have taken maximum doses of just about everything in the pharmacy and it would have little or no effect on my mood. This wasnt mild depression, it was the most horrible experience I have ever encountered. I couldn't work, eat, sleep, I literally wanted to kill myself and very nearly did. I was seeing more than one physician, had batteries of tests and still no relief. After the most recent episode my regular doctor (an angel) gave me an injection only saying that it was her "potion" and wanted me to call her the next day if I noticed any significant improvement. I had no idea it was testosterone. I had previously had a blood test and it was extremely low (290 as I recall). I think that's lower than normal for a 70 to 80 year old man. In any case, I imagined I was feeling better even before I got home. By the next morning I felt more upbeat, happy, cheerful and motivated than I had in years. I was stunned and just prayed that the black hole wouldnt come back. I called her and she had me come in that day. She explained to me what the injection had been and that it was still not being widely accepted for the antidepressant effects that it is capable of producing.
She is teaching me to inject myself and yes, I will need to be monitored for proper levels and so forth but I am here to tell you, none of that matters. With depression that severe you dont care what it takes, you just want it gone. I understand that it is relatively common among men to suffer from that kind of depression and be unresponsive to antidepressants. If that description fits you, dont walk, run to your doctor and inquire about it. I hate to think of anyone suffering the way I have for so long when the answer may be a painless injection away. I was running out of options with the ADs and was just about convinced that if that was the best I could expect for the rest of my life, it wasnt worth it. I truly believe this therapy has saved my life. Learn about it. This book is a great place to start. Good luck to you all.
Aging, Testosterone, anti-aging medicine, longevity and quality of life.......2007-05-21
Eugene Shippen has done a great service in writing this book. There are many reasons for reading a book about testosterone therapy. Testosterone therapy has gotten a bad press in the past; physicians use it for hypogonadism in aging males and some rarely for post-menopausal females and/or hysterectomy patients; and very few physicians care enough about quality of life issues to worry about the role of testosterone in preserving not just libido but heart health, bone density, vascular integrity, emotional and/or psychological well-being, muscle retention, endurance, strength, etc., and even preventing the wasting away that accompanies AIDS.
Urologists often repeat false or questionable claims when counseling patients about testosterone therapy: "It's controversial," "Testosterone is just 'fertilizer' for the prostate," "Testosterone increases the risk of cancer," "Testosterone won't help an aging male dealing with ED if the problem is 'mechanical', etc., etc." Similar questionable claims are made when gynecologists counsel female patients about either estrogen therapy or androgen-estrogen therapy.
At least Dr. Shippen has some counterarguments to offer, based on some credible scientific studies.
Not many physicians are putting the anti-aging concerns of patients into a perspective that allows them to make intelligent choices about hormone therapy. For example, that Proscar and Avodart block DHT might mean at the very least one would need a pharmacologist to sort out the issues related to choosing which trade-offs are most important when deciding whether to treat prostate enlargement with these drugs while taking testosterone.
Read this book along with Ray Kurzweil's "Fantastic Voyage" to get a different and more wholistic approach to aging. These books are must-reads for men and women who care about quality of life issues that are not being addressed by medical practitioners too narrowly focused.
But, before one thinks that hormone therapy is just a quality-of-life issue, one must look at all of the data relating to how hormone therapy can be used to treat depression (the common cold of mental illness), mood swings, bloating, obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypotension, poor circulation, etc.
Books like Dr. Shippen's are for patients who want to work collaboratively with doctors to treat diseases and avoid the resulting ravages therefrom.
Great book.......2007-05-18
I loved this book. I've been thinking about HRT/TRT for awhile now and this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to know the benefits and how to do it the right way.
A must read for men over 40.......2006-01-20
This book is highly recommended reading for both men and women who are entering their "menopause years". It provides a very easy to follow explanation of the role that a proper balance of hormones (including, but not limited to, testosterone and estrogen) play in the health of both men and women. Diminishing amounts and improper balances of hormones during the onset of "middle age" are major factors in our health and vitality, including stamina, strength, physical fitness and (of course) sexuality. I became aware of this book while reading "A Private Diary: Our First Year in Swinging" by Jerry Moore. Mr. Moore disclosed his own personal reduction in stamina and sexual performance, which was corrected through hormonal modulation as described in The Testosterone Syndrome, as well as that of a number of others encountered within the Lifestyle community. Many men tend to accept their declining sexual performance and overall health as an inevitable part of aging. Doctor Shippen's book is a must read for men nearing 40, arming them with knowledge of what is happening to them and of the alternatives available to them if they choose to do something about it. "The Sexy Years" by Suzanne Somers, aimed at women on this same topic, used Dr Shippen's book as one of her sources for research and quotes him throughout her book.

Book Description
Naomi Mitchison, Scotland's grand old lady of literature and celebrated left-wing political thinker, kept a wartime diary at the request of Mass-Observation, a social research agency. From the day Hitler invaded Poland to the day America dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, she recorded this picture of how one (extraordinary) family and their friends lived...and what actually happened. "She writes enviably, with the kind of casual precision which...comes by grace."--Times Literary Supplement.
