War From a Reporter's Persective.......2004-12-27

Newsmen In Khaki is the story of Herbert Mitgang, the author, and his experiences as a reporter for Stars and Stripes during WWII. It is fast moving and light hearted in spots and, although many of the original Stars and Stripes articles are reprinted, the book doesn't really deal too much with the blood and gore of war. My only criticism is that I found two typographical errors toward the end. Otherwise, I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in WWII.

A book worth reading.......2004-10-05

I was looking for a book like this and I wasn't sure what would work for me. So I headed to Borders and ask a sales girl there to help me look for a book, she looked up the books the store had. This book was one they had there. I took a good look at three books and I really liked this one. I haven't read all the way through it yet but (I just got it today) so far I think it will help with my recovery. So, if you need to go through recovery, I suggest you read this book.. I gave 5 stares because, I think its he best.

Great book for a book club, entertaining or if you are an English teacher!If you don't fit into any of the above categories, the recipes are quite good but the style of writing is not entertaining. A little like reading a textbook but with 'dinner and a movie' taglines with the related recipes.

Just what our reading group needed!!.......2005-06-19

I read the review for this book in Pages Magazine and purchased it for my reading group (we've been together for about 2 years.) I brought the book to our meeting last week, along with the "Vintage Junk Food" chocolate cake. What a big hit! The recipes are easy and delicious, we LOVED the book selections and the discussion questions are both fun and interesting. What a great book! I highly recommend it! I'll be using some of the ideas to get my high school students excited about reading. I also purchased a subscription to the author's newsletter, The Literary Gathering, for my school's library.

There should be more of these books with suggested reading and tempting recipes. This particular one is chock full of book suggestions for the entire year with discussion questions for each book PLUS delicious tasting recipes to set the theme of the book.

This book consists of small motifs and patterns. While the patterns are nice they are just black and white pictures. I wanted precut stencils which I could use to decorate. This book is for those who can use these patterns to perhaps make their own stencils. Not what I expected or wanted.

If you like the images shown, give this artist a look. I simply love his work. You can pick this one up cheap right now (2006) and you will not be disappointed. His vision of cows is dead right-on, but you don't have to like cow paintings to appreciate his primal, visionary blocks. Waddell comes at you like a cave painter and knocks you out with his raw power.

At first glance, this book may look like just another tediously detailed behind-the-scenes guide to picking stocks. But the delightful surprise concocted by authors Charles M. LaLoggia and Cherrie Mahon is the book's page-turner narrative and laugh-out-loud wit, which they often use effectively to nail critical points. The authors focus on how to spot and invest in undervalued companies. We from getAbstract recommend this book to investment professionals (hey, the way things are going, a few fresh insights can't hurt) as well as to anyone, including Sunday speculators in need of a good laugh.

A Humorous Look at Spotting Takeovers and Special Situations.......2001-07-18

The Superstock Investor is the best resource I have seen for legal and ethical instruction on how to spot companies that will be taken over or whose stocks will soon soar due to temporary, special circumstances. These methods can help you make money in up and down markets, but they require a lot of learning and focus. Even if you don't plan to use these investment methods, you will learn a lot of how Wall Street works from this fine book.

A Superstock is a "stock that has the potential to rise significantly in price regardless of what the general stock market is doing." This will be due to a "specific potential event, or 'catalyst,' usually a takeover bid . . . ." These stocks are selling well below their on-going value as a business but no one cares because they are small and either cyclical or slow-growing.

The book is filled with actual stocks that the authors have picked and followed in their newsletter. The case histories go back over 25 years of special situations, including cumulative preferred stocks suddenly making their payments after having been in arears.

The basic method involves watching factors like takeover activity in an industry, the ownership of 5+ percent institutions through 13D filings with the SEC, insider buying and selling, company share repurchases, and technical trading patterns discerned from charts.

The opening section points out the weaknesses of how most people try to pick stocks. The examples are quite humorous, and will provide entertainment value even to people who do not buy and sell stocks.

The authors are also cautious about making claims. They are trying to give you an additional set of tools, rather than replacing whatever tools you use now. The examples of how to pay attention differently to financial news are very well done.

On the other hand, do be aware that few people are going to have the interest and discipline to learn to use this investing method.

After you finish profiting from this book, I suggest that you think about where else the consensus is usually wrong. What about forecasts of what will happen next politically? . . . with fashion? . . . with the economy? . . . with entertainment celebrities?

Learn to take the conventional wisdom as wishful thinking or the latest, best guess . . . rather than as fact!

The Superstock Investor.......2001-05-11

This book provides a unique insight into investing in the stock market. For most "get rich quick" investment books, only the author gets rich. This is not that kind of book. Mr. LaLoggia provides a wry and witty review of what's wrong with most investment "news" and "research" available to the public today. The book sets forth a proven system to search out and identify undervalued stocks that have been overlooked by Wall Street and the main-stream press. To Mr. LaLoggia's credit, he acknowledges that his approach is not easy and requires research and analysis by the investor. The fact that it is not easy and requires work may be the book's main virtue to the intelligent investor who realizes that there is no "get rich quick" formula.

A Fun Read.......2001-04-24

This book was really fun to read. It sort of swings back and forth between a light-hearted view of how the stock market really works, and then gets very serious and detailed when it comes to LaLoggia's methods for picking takeover stocks. To get the most out of this book I think you have to take the market seriously and accept that picking stocks takes effort and hard work. Most of the book deals with things you should look for when reading the financial news. What I like most about the book is that it is so different from any other stock market book I've read. It's also quite humorous in parts. All in all, I highly recommend it.

There are some well thought out insights in this book, especially in regards to potential takeovers. It is clear that Ms. Mahon has thoroughly researched her subject and offers numerous real life examples of what to look for in spotting takeover opportunities, most of which is conveyed in a clear and concise manor... A fast, easy, worthwhile read.

Not thorough enough.......2003-12-26

LJ's book is mostly a regurgitation of Warren Buffett's letters combined with a few exerpts from the Enron and other shareholder letters. She's clearly fallen under the spell of the Oracle from Omaha. I wish there were new insights here about evaluating people for business partnerships, but there isn't anything of the sort. Rather, we get a childlike and skin deep analysis of a few shareholder letters spliced into a sparse review of Buffett's letters. Very disappointing.

A European perspective on a US problem.......2003-01-19

Laura Rittenhouse has done us all a great favour in her book "Do Business with People you can Trust". It should be required reading for all CEO's and corporate communicators. At last we can see the propects for creating shareholder value by full and honest disclosure and she has created a useful technique for assessing the value (or lack of it)implicit in the shareholder letters published by CEOs.
All those who have had the uneviable task of writing reports or letters to shareholders know the temptations of the fashionable phrase or the piece of internal jargon. They are easy to write and get the job done - but we should all learn to stand back and ask "exactly what does that mean?"
Disclosure requirements are increasing in all countries but no amount of rules or legislation will prevent the use of meaningless phrases or words. The author helps us understand what works and what doesn't.
I only have two suggestions for improvement. First, I think we are benefiting here in the UK from additional disclosures about risk management and many companies are now reporting on the major risks they are taking and how they manage them. More on that would have been helpful. Second, She has focused on the "goodies" strongly represented by Berkshire Hathaway, and the "baddies" represented by Enron. The emphasis on these two companies is heavy and I would have preferred something a little more balanced.
Other than that I enjoyed the book immensely, it is well and intelligently written with a mischievous sense of humour. I hope Ms Rittenhouse will persevere with her theme and continue her analysis for an update in a year or so.

Mining the Nuggets of Knowledge from Shareholder Letters.......2002-09-15

Tru$t should be required reading for anyone interested in leadership, communications or investing. In fact, many Wall Street analysts could offer significant added value in their reports by applying the lessons in Tru$t to their research. My hope is that in subsequent books Ms. Rittenhouse builds on her analysis of success to provide more insight into the art of creating new businesses - or leading any worthwhile organization.

Do Business with People You Can Tru$t involves readers in the possibilities of trustworthy and ethical business practices through entertaining and illustrative analysis of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letters. The premise of this analysis is that these letters do not just represent a unique and interesting form of communication - they are also the best barometers of the qualities of the manager that writes them. This premise is illustrated with examples of how Berkshire approaches its business issues and needs contrasted with other approaches and the relative success of each.

A fascinating new approach to doing Business with principles.......2002-06-14

Drawing on examples from extreme ends of ethical spectrum in todays's bussiness world--Berkshire Hathaways and Enron--Ms. Rittenhouse puts forth a compelling argument about the benefits of remaining principled in one's business dealings.

Thanks to this book, I no longer believe that good CEOs must live in an ethical gray area in order to turn a profit in today's business world. This book should be the basis for a complete reevaluation of current accepted business practices.

The author also illustrates how an average person can thoughtfully gauge the ethics of a company through careful analysis of its annual report.
