A Splendid "I was there" account.......2005-06-09
War accounts are usually written from the top down. Here the account is from the ground-up, literally. Sgt Wright tells the story of his volunteer company, Co.F of the 1st Minnesota exactly like it is seen by the average groundpounder. Being a former Viet Nam era "grunt" and also coming from Wright's hometown of Red Wing, Mn, I was able to viscerally feel the physical discomforts of the men as they walked, froze, sweated and stumbled though the boredoms, confusions, terrors and thrills of their experiences. Wright (and the editor) did a masterful job of focusing the story from the perspective of the average participant in the war with just enough background to keep it all in context with the overall events. If you are interested in the Civil War from this sort of perspective, this is the book to read.
The story is grand, the prose simple, the details fascinate.......2002-02-22
This memoir of service with the First Minnesota recounts the sojourn of James Wright, from Red Wing, Minnesota through the battle of Gettysburg. Wright wrote the book long after his service, and his over-long monograph sat in the Minnesota Historical Society until edited and published in this book. The book starts as a slow read, but picks up and eventually begins to mesmerize the reader.
Think of any major event of the day -- September 11th in New York, for example. How valuable will first person accounts be? A first person account of a major past event is very interesting for the details, the feel, the point of view.
Company F was Wright's home. He missed the famous charge of the First Minnesota at Gettysburg, as his Company was off to the side suffering severe casualties of their own during the battle. The story is as grand, even with this "missed" moment.
The editing is good, and preserves the author's tone. The book could have been even shorter, but with some effort during the opening chapters, the reader is well rewarded.
Excellent first person account of a union soldier.......2001-11-22
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and content of this book. The author is Sergeant Wright of Co. F, First Minnesota Regiment. His writing is excellent. The editor has chosen to primarily include first person accounts while excluding most of the post war years analysis that often creep into such accounts.
This book so effectively complements "The Last Full Measure - The Life and Death of the First Minnesota Volunteers" by Richard Moe. The Moe book uses first person accounts though it focuses on the broader picture. This book, written by a soldier, effectively details the life of the soldier - including day to day activities from finding food, water, and shelter to the incredible hardships of the march and battle.
The First Minnesota Regiment fought in most of the civil war eastern battles from 1861-1863. It is noted for the highest union casualties at First Bull Run, as well as the highest casualties of any union regiment in the war (80%) at Gettysburg. The regiment has a brief appearance in the 2002 motion picture "Gods and Generals" - I was there for the filming although waiting to see the final production - fall 2002.
The book also contains interesting events not in the Moe book including a great chapter detailing the time in New York city during the draft riots and the eventful winter trip back to Minnesota.

Book Description
Raquela Prywes lived on the front lines of Israel's history. A ninth-generation Jerusalemite, she found her true calling as a hospital and battlefield nurse, delivering babies in the infamous Athlit detention camp, where Holocaust survivors were interned by the British, and literally walking across minefields to tend the wounded during the 1948 War of Independence.
Surrounded by men of uncommon bravery, Raquela fell passionately in love with the handsome young captain of one of the refugee ships and had to choose between him and the brilliant and distinguished doctor who waited for her back in Jerusalem. Upon her return to Israel, she helped to found the first hospital in the desert frontier of Beersheba, where she delivered the babies of Bedouin women and Jewish immigrants, eventually organizing the hospitals credited with saving Israeli soldiers during the Six-Day War.
Alive with the courage of a rare woman and a rugged nation,
Raquela tells the powerful and deeply moving story of an Israeli woman who knew passionate love, great danger, and shattering loss and who witnessed the darkest -- and most triumphant -- moments in the history of the Jewish people. This edition of
Raquela, which won the National Jewish Book Award in 1978, includes an introduction by best-selling novelist Faye Kellerman.
Customer Reviews:
The history of modern Israel through the telling of one exemplary life- story .......2007-06-27
When Ruth Gruber began the research on this book she searched throughout Israel for an ideal figure whose life - story could embody and best exemplify the history of modern Israel. At Hadassah Hopital in Jerusalem she was told by Prof. Kalman Mann of a woman named Rachel Prywes who had been a nurse and midwife. This was the ideal figure and Gruber embarked on telling her story.
It is that of a twelvth generation- Jerusalemite who from childhood was involved in the struggle to create an independent and free Jewish state in the land of Israel. The story is told in the form of the novel. Much of the dialogue seems simplistic and awkward. This is not great literature.
But the story is told with a straightforwardness. It has a quality of authenticity. It tells the basic Zionist narrative in which the conflict in the Middle East was by and large created by Arab intransigence, and refusal to live in peace with Jewish neighbors. It tells of heroic chapters in the life of the country. In the course of the story the nurse Raquela also comes to work at the interment camp at Atlit where the British are holding concentration- camp survivors who want to enter Israel. They were taken at sea by the British and held in prison. Her heroic efforts there and later . The efforts made by the medical team she is a part of in saving Bedouin infants and introducing medical care to the Bedouin community , are evidence for what to my own mind has become a painful ironic truth in regard to many people's reading of the Arab- Israeli conflict today. They forget completely the great efforts made the Jews to improve the life for all citizens of the country, Jew and Arab alike. They say nothing about the way the Arabs perpetuated their own refugee problem, how they refused to settle the six hundred thousand Arabs who left the Holy Land during the War of Independence. They say nothing about the great task the Jews did in taking in and providing new lives for such a vast number of immigrants.
The book points out again the irony that it is precisely the side that has been decent, fair, humane , the Israeli Jewish one which is perpetually accused of being the oppressor.
The story of Raquela herself, her romantic struggles especially is again told in a simplistic, straightforward, and nonetheless not unmoving way.
I simply great enjoyed this book, and I think most readers who want to learn more about how the Jewish state developed, while at the same time relaxing with a good novel, would do well to read this book.
Amazing.......2005-10-10
This biography details in vivid tones the life of a ninth generation Jerusalemite. Through her life we see the history of modern Israel, joys and hardships, wars and victories, all in personal terms without any heavy-handedness. Because it reads like a novel, it is engrossing; because it is a true story it is amazing. Ruth Gruber paints a rich and vivid portrait of the woman and of the nation.
Fabulous readable account !.......2005-06-22
Terrific story, well-told, exciting, thrilling, heartwarming, and real. An eye-opener to what really went on there and just how hard the Israeli people had to fight. I have never throughout all my education and reading understood Israel the way I did through Raquela's eyes. I had no idea the British were involved in that way, and was disappointed to learn of it. I learned a lot from this book from the perspective of an Israeli-born Israeli. The internment camps were dispicable, the people who ran them disgusting and almost as guilty as nazis.
A real gem........2005-01-13
My son converted to Judaism last year, he went to study in Israel. He met an married a beautiful young Jewish woman who gave me this book as one of her all time favorites. It is extremely well written, a real page turner. I hated to put it down and would have read the whole of it in one sitting if I'd had the chance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a great read, and who really cares to understand the heart of Israel's struggles for Statehood - from the human perspective.
First rate!
An Admirable Woman.......2004-06-18
I read this book when I was 15 years old. Wow! I was SOOO impressed with Raquela's courage and integrity that at that point I decided if I had a daughter I would name her Raquela. Nine years later, I had a baby girl and her name is Raquela. I read this book again a few years ago and was once again impressed. Just a month ago my husband, daughter, Raquela, and I were able to go to Israel and I saw Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus. My daughter was able to see and walk the same places as her namesake. Ruth Gruber beautifully laid this story out and I agree it reads like a novel and is very hard to put down.

High Quality Choice if interested in Alt Med AND mainstream ways.......2007-09-30
I got this book a year ago -- I was lucky to be in a pretty progressive bookstore at the time that we decided to start 'trying', and the staff there said they'd heard good things about it. Without that rec, I doubt I would have bought it because it doesn't have that name-recognition or reputation. I'm so glad I did. All the basics of pregnancy are here, in the same depth as a book like Dr.Sears's, etc, but in addition you get really thorough explanation of alternative medicine applications. It's a perfect resource if you really try to straddle both worlds. So don't be put off just because you may not have heard of this book! It's excellent! It was my only pregnancy book all thruout and I never felt that I needed to look at anything else.
Excellent !.......2007-04-04
I love this book. The author combines conventional medicine with alternative therapy and the result is fantastic. I asked my traditional ob/gyn many questions and he had no knowledge of alternative views and I found it very frustrasting. This book proves thoughtful insight to pregnancy that is often over looked by traditional ob/gyn.
THE pregnancy book.......2007-01-04
We've collected a shelf full of books during my wife's (first) pregnancy. While all serve a purpose, the Whole Pregnancy Handbook has become our go to book for just about everything. It's great information written in an easy to digest style that makes sense from a holistic and conventional medical point of view.
Great reference for my second time around.......2006-10-30
I checked this book out of the local library to look a up a couple of things before my first OB appointment. I had loaned out most of my own pregnancy library and just needed a little information. Any old pregnancy book would do, so my selection was kind of random. I ended up reading it almost cover to cover. Now that I have to return the library's copy I need to purchase my own.
I thought, in contradiction to the earlier reviewer's statements, that the book was highly detailed and very informative. What it lacked was the hysteria making format of other popular books on the subject. It was certainly organized differently so that might have thrown her off.
The information was well balanced and fairly comprehensive. I really enjoyed the section on nutrition and the chapter on prenatal yoga has certainly motivated me to find a class. What I liked most though was the reassurance that even at my advanced age (over 35) that I had a really good chance of having another healthy, uneventful pregnancy. Wonderful book!
Clarification.......2006-09-16
To clarify something the last reviewer said, there is in fact a chapter in this book that describes the month-by-month development of the baby and the physical and emotional changes a mother might experience. Full disclosure: I wrote the book with Joel Evans (so I had to give us 5 stars!).

Book Description
An entertaining and witty guide to ordering, buying, and collecting wine -- from a trailblazing, mystique-busting, straight-talking wine expert.
Wine is Judy Beardsall's passion. She believes that wine is a life-enhancing gift from the gods. And she believes that wine is meant to be savored, not sipped, at any meal except breakfast, whether on a special night or with hamburgers.
For twenty years in the wine business, from her first job at New York's elegant Sherry-Lehmann wine shop -- where she later became the first woman manager -- to the creation of her very own wine at a vineyard in Tuscany, Judy Beardsall has followed her bliss and united her work in the wine trade with her love of wine. Now, in Sniffing the Cork, Judy Beardsall shares her passion with readers in a wise, witty, and wonderful guide to wine that will delight both connoisseurs and those daunted by wine shops and wine lists.
Sniffing the Cork is an iconoclastic wine book. It seeks to demystify and de-"mythify" much of the pretension that surrounds the world of wine and intimidates the casual drinker. Banishing the confusion of "winespeak" -- describing wine with phrases like "candied fruit," "gooseberries in autumn," or "flinty" -- Judy Beardsall urges reader to develop their own wine language, using words and phrases that describe the feeling the wine gives them.
She takes the reader on a tour of the world of wine, stopping off in the foremost wine-making countries -- where she reveals which reveals which red or white wines are the best of each region and which ones are surefire winners to try at home. Judy guides the reader through the typical wine shop where they learn, confidently, what to ask for and how much to spend. And for readers who have always wanted to master the restaurant wine list, Judy Beardsall has the answers to every question: what to look for, how many bottles to order, how much to spend, how to communicate with the sommelier or waiter, who should get the wine list -- and why it needn't always be the man! And of course the explanation of why you should never, ever sniff the cork!
Judy's expert wine suggestions appear throughout the book, along with lists of recommended wines in the ten-to-fifteen-dollar range (as well as the greater, pricier selections). There is information on glassware, care, storage, collecting wines, pairing wine with specific foods, and wines for special occasions. One chapter explores the nutritional and therapeutic benefits of red and white wines and how wine can be good for the body as well as the soul.
"Drink in moderation," says Judy Beardsall. "Enjoy and share the pleasures of wine and good food with your friends and family. Give yourself the gift of good health and work at it every day. Let wine help you do so." Sniffing the Cork is that rarest of wine books: one that helps you make wine a part of your life.
Customer Reviews:
WHO KNEW WINE COULD BE THIS FUN!.......2004-05-15
"Sniffing the Cork: And Other Wine Myths Demystified" is not only very informative but really fun to read. Judy Beardsall uses a lot of anecdotes and work stories to illustrate her points, usually with hilarious results and you think to yourself, "Thank God that didn't happen to me!" It also breathes with the passion that Ms. Beardsall has for wine. This passion is easily transferred to the reader and makes you want to go to your nearest wine store ASAP. That is saying a lot if you knew me.
I am a single woman in my late twenties and have never understood much about wine. Nor did I really have an interest to find out. I have always relied on other people to pick out the wine at dinner, etc. Reading this book was almost like getting run over by a truck, but in a good way! I was immediately transported into this world of wine that always seemed so elusive, so far away, so out of my league. Ms. Beardsall makes it clear from the start that this line of thinking couldn't be further from the truth. I was constantly breathing a sigh of relief when she would demystify a common thought, practice or fear. For instance, if someone asked me to describe what a wine tasted like, I would usually keep it simple for fear of not saying the right thing, fear of not using the right wine speak. This will happen no more! Why? Because Ms. Beardsall, who has earned and deserves a prestigious reputation as a wine expert, says in her book that any words can be used to describe a wine as long as you choose them yourself. Basically, anything goes (insert sigh of relief). Ms. Beardsall also takes you through the whole wine process from the choice of land to the corking to the serving it with a meal be it at home or a gala.
Another great section of this book is on the health benefits of wine. I have always heard that wine was good for my health was never quite sure why. That is until I read Ms. Beardsall's chapter on it and I was not only enlightened but downright convinced that wine is essential to a long and healthy life. That whole chapter is simply amazing!
This book, most importantly, has given me the tools and the confidance to get out there and try different varieties of wine on my own and not be intimidated.
I highly recommend this book because it is great for those who think they know about wine, those who don't know anything about wine and want to learn, or those who are just looking for a good read (I was in this last category). You'll learn something and laugh at the same time despite yourself!
I'll take that wine menu please!

Book Description
A third-generation traditional bookbinder gives easy-to-follow instructions for making all the major, historically important styles of Japanese bindings as well as traditional book cases—the custom-made folding boxes that afford handsome protection for Japan's exquisite books. The authoritative text, written by one of Japan's leading professional bookbinders, has been fully adapted for Western readers. Both American and Japanese suppliers of traditional tools and materials are provided and substitutes are recommended for items not readily available. For centuries the West has admired Japanese books, but only now can we make them ourselves and take full advantage of their creative possibilities. Stunning and practical, these bindings are ideal for preserving calligraphy, letters, artwork, and poems, for adding a distinctive touch to limited-edition books, and for use as diaries or gifts.

Nothing New.......2006-08-17
I bought this book hoping for a new spin on Bookbinding lit. It turned out to be more of the same: lots more stab bindings. The explanations are vague as well. The chapter on Scroll-making was interesting, but overall, this book is not worth the price. If you have other bookbinding books, there's nothing new here.
At the Master's Feet.......2005-01-30
As an amatuer bookbinder with varying levels of attention span, I found this book really useful. The illustrations and directions are very clear and can be followed very closely or used as a jumping off point. It covers many styles of binding, tools and paper. I especially enjoyed the pictures where the bookbinder's foot is used to to hold something down leaving the hands free to work. Ever read a craft how-to book and thought...well I could do that if I had 3 hands?
Lots of choices, clear directions.......2004-07-12
This is an excellent introduction to the varied forms of Japanese bookbinding. As with so many other crafts in Japan, it is both like and very unlike matching Western craft.
First, there is the wide variety of different binding styles. Some are very distinctive. In the accordion and 'flutter' books, the first and last pages are bound to the covers. The rest of the pages are fan-folded, either one long strip or sheets pasted together. Other bindings, whether Chinese, Korean, or uniquely Japanese in style, tie or glue the pages into a more Western stack. The end of this book shows traditional outer covers for books, partial or complete boxes. The are made uniquely for each volume or set, to give it additional protection.
The tools, materials, and techniques are laid out clearly. The authors show first show the traditional craft, as it has been practiced since the Heian era (ca. 1000 AD). They also show how modern materials can be used instead of or in addition to the older ones. The technique for each binding or box is spelled out in clear pictures and text.
Clear technique is what makes this book. It gives the scholar a good understanding of how a master artisan would prepare or repair each artifact. It also gives the home crafter the ability to adapt classic techniques to modern uses, from keepsake albums to collections of a child's art. The structure of most Japanese books is simple enough for a child to imitate with some kind of success, even though the book's examples approach museum quality. With a little thought, the techniques can be adapted to almost any level of skill.
This is book is very enjoyable, even if you just read it. If you go ahead and try some of the techniques shown, you'll enjoy it even more. You may even get results that you'll enjoy for years to come.

Japanese Bookbinding an excellent teaching tool.......2002-04-10
As a professional artist I found the step by step instructions and black and white photos and drawn illustrations to be exceptional. Each part of the craft of book making including the proper tools and glues for the job are described in easy detail. A variety of Japanese style books are included in this book. A valuable addition to the library of a paper craftsman.
Excellent and complete resource on Japanese Bookbinding.......2000-02-15
After a brief history of bookbinding in Japan, Ikegami gives wonderful details of the tools and methods of bookbinding. Covering the tools and materials, he not only shows and details the classical, but lists more accessible western tools and materials that can be used as well. Ikegami begins covering the actual methods of bookbinding with a section on the basic techniques used. What follow are detailed descriptions of the construction of 19 different book styles, grouped into categories ( Four-Hole, Accordian, Ledgers, Other.) The last chapters cover the construction of book cases and the book mending using Japanese techniques. Finally appendices include an extensive Selected reading list (with both English and Japanese titles), and a suppliers list. Throughout the book the numerous illustrations are extremely clear, and used to show the step by step construction of the books. The text accompanying them is detailed and clear. 8 pages of full page, color plates show each of the books described in the text.
This book has found a permanent spot on my studio bookshelf, and has in fact prompted me to renew my own love affair with Japanese books. I have already completed two projects, with nice results, after only 1 week with copy of this book from the library. Ordered my own copy today.

Book Description
"One of the only child-raising books that does justice to the importance of genetics and heredity...jam-packed with valuable information for every parent."
Dr. Fitzhugh Dodson, Author of HOW TO PARENT, HOW TO FATHER, and HOW TO DISCIPLINE WITH LOVE
Complete, authoritative, and sensible, this excellent resource draws on four years of research, and numerous studies and interviews, made public here for the first time. From the day you bring him home through his crucial elementary school years, you will learn: how boys develop differently than girls; where "male aggressiveness" originates; how working moms and their little boys can have a good relationship; and much more.
Customer Reviews:
about real boys.......2004-09-05
This is the only book that I found that dealt with exactly the situations I was going through at the exact age with my first son. While it probably does not describe all boys (my husband was a genius who started Kindergarten at age 4 and had no troubles academically) if you have a "normal" boy, this book will help you, especially moms, understand some of the things that make him tick.
Bringing up Boys Better.......2004-04-24
Try reading Dr. James Dobson's Bringing up Boys. A GREAT book about how to raise boys!
Yes, it is fantastic to understand what makes boys who they are. That is a key component to parenting a boy (understanding what it means to be a boy), but let's also celebrate boys and raise them to be men.
Boys and girls certainly are different and I appreciate that this book acknowledges and addresses this, but there are other books (Dr. James Dobson's Bringing up Boys) that create a better balance in understanding (and appreciating) the nature of boys and loving discipline.
Let us not punish a boy for being a boy (or for being a kid), but provide loving discipline and direction when he is being naughty. There's nothing wrong with playing, jumping, running and having fun. Let boys be boys, and let us raise them to be men. The acknowledged differences between boys and girls should not be used to demonstrate how difficult boys can be, but to accentuate and appreciate the differences so that we are able to parent our little boys in the best way possible and to meet their unique needs.
There are better resources out there.
The Little Boy Book.......2002-09-18
Marvelous! A tremendous source of information from disparate authorities, put together superbly!
My husband (a professor at Tulane) and I safely guided two girls through childhood, adolescence, college and graduate school. But nothing prepared us for our son. We knew he was not like the girls-we didn't know in exactly what ways until we read this book. We recommend it to all the mothers we meet in nursery school.
Disappointing.......2002-05-04
Although there is useful information in this book, I was disappointed in it. For a book about boys, it reads entirely too much like a book about coping with a chomosome abnormality -- the abnormality being the Y chromosome. Her general thesis is that the Y chomosome causes boys to develop more slowly and to be more succeptible to many other problems. Her approach to the discussion is very biologically deterministic. I found the 1 chapter on little boys in RAISING CAIN much more useful to understanding what my 4-year-old son is going through than this whole book. She is a strong believer in holdling boys back a year from Kindergarten. If you are looking for arguments for keeping your son back, this book may be what you are looking for. The publisher claims that this is the only book of its type, focusing on the parenting of young boys. That appears to be the case, which is a shame.
My Comfort Book.......2000-04-30
This book helped me raise three little boys born in two and a half years. From Diapers to trucks and fighting, I found what I needed to know in these pages. I am now sending copies to my three neices who have just had boys of their own. Truly trans-generational!

Book Description
The achievement of Christopher Wood (1901-1930) has often been overshadowed by the legend that grew up around his bohemian lifestyle and his dramatic suicide at the age of 29. Increasingly, however, critics have come to see his work as having a pivotal role in the development of modernism in Britain. Pursuing a path between the naturalism of the 1920s and the abstraction of the 1930s, he won the admiration of such modernist giants as Picasso and Cocteau and secured his status as among the most important painters of his generation.
The author explores Wood's life and career in detail and examines the growth of a glamorous narrative of tragic genius that developed during the decades following his death. The integrity of Wood's endeavor, the combination of self-confidence and uncertainty, gives his paintings a human quality that continues to be admired today.
