Book Description
The Civil War in general, and Oliver Cromwell in particular, is enjoying a significant revival in academic and general study; television docu-dramas, films, battlefield tours and the appearance of Cromwell in the 'Great Britons' and 'Men of the Millennium' polls demonstrate this. Here, Alan Marshall concentrates on the man's military life, for it is certainly true that it was Cromwell's battlefield skills, tactical astuteness and command capabilities that helped him attain his political goals. His efforts were not without controversy and this wide-ranging assessment will cover his strategic failings as well as his attributes. The book will surely come to feature in the personal and academic study resources of anyone seeking to gain a deeper knowledge of Cromwell as a military man.
Contents: Origins; The Road to War; The Face of War, 162; The Local War, 1643; From Marston Moor to Newbury, 1644; New Modelling, 1645-6; The Road to Preston, 1646-8; Ireland, 1649; The War Against the Scots, 1650-1; Conclusion: A Genius for War?
THE AUTHOR Alan Marshall is a Principal Lecturer in British and European history at Bath Spa University and is an expert on the 17th century. He has written and lectured extensively on this subject. He lives in Wells, Somerset.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-10-05
This is an excellent analysis of Cromwell's life and development as a soldier. And, only one of a few ever done (Frank Kitson's being one of the others -- it too is excellent).
The title says it all though, it is the Military Life of a Revolutionary at War, not a general biography.
Highly recommended.
*Not* a biography. Very focused on his military campaigns........2007-09-13
If you're looking for a good biography of Oliver Cromwell, this isn't the book for you. Marshall's description of 17th century battle techniques and his empirical analysis of Cromwell's battles are excellent. But for those (like me) who purchased the book to learn more about the man and his subsequent impact on England and English history, look elsewhere. Mr. Marshall's effort here is quite focused, and a bit more than dry in its literary flair.
A self taught Soldier.......2005-09-02
Cromwell has been mostly remembered for his politics. Politics that made him Lord-Protector of England. But before he was Lord-Protector, he was a soldier and general. This book details Cromwell's life as a self taught soldier and describes his campaigns in some detail.
This book is for any serious students of Cromwell or of Early Modern warfare.

Book Description
A safe, effective, and revolutionary program for lowering homocysteine levels and cutting your risk of heart disease
In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Kilmer S. McCully explains what is really behind the epidemic of heart disease. For many years, clogged arteries have been inaccurately viewed as the cause, rather than a symptom, of heart disease. Now, McCully shows you how to cut your risk of heart disease by controlling the real culprit, homocysteine. Considered one of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent years, McCully's findings have been validated by numerous large-scale studies. The Heart Revolution:
- Challenges the long-held assumption that lowering cholesterol is the key to preventing heart disease
- Explains how eating vitamin B-rich food can control homocysteine levels
- Lays out a plan with menus for putting more B vitamins in our diet
- Discusses how food processing and additives compromise our health
- Explains how costly cholesterol-lowering medicines can actually harm our health
Eat Your Way to a Healthy Heart
Pork Chops with Potatoes and Onions, Veal with Wine and Mushrooms, Guacamole, Omelettes. This is not your typical diet program. Dr. McCully offers real food choices with fresh ingredients available just about everywhere. The focus is on delicious foods that will leave you satisfied. The purpose is to make sure you're getting enough of the vitamins needed to prevent heart disease—B6, B12, and folic acid, as well as essential, phytochemicals, fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential oils. It's easy to follow this plan as it relies on foods you want to eat with little preparation time and tons of variety.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ !.......2006-11-07
This book is a must read for anyone concerned about his/her cholesterol level.......especially if your medical professionals are solely focussed on lowering them as the only rational strategy for good health. Kilmer McCully does a great job of adding balance to the medical community's current enslavement to the cholesterol=heart disease theory, and in the process demonstrates again how the world of science tends to banish those whose breakthrough insights don't fit the mainstream mold. Fortunately for us all, McCully's insights about the role of inflammation in heart disease are finally being more fairly considered by the
medical establishment.
Important Information About Treatment for Heart Disease.......2005-11-30
The book logically presents information suggesting that there is a simple preventative treatment for heart disease. The author writes to the lay person, explaining the lack of information supporting the status quo - the supposedly heart-healthy low fat diet - and supporting his homocysteine hypothesis. The only short-coming of the book is in the final chapters, where the author over reaches the information presented and suggests control of homocysteine levels may be a cure all for a wide variety of conditions, including alzheimers and cancer.
Still reading.......2005-05-25
I just received my book and have yet to read more than 30 pages. So far, I find the material interesting and the arguments convincing. More than anything, I wanted to comment on the review by "a reader"...and his or her suggestion that readers would be better off skipping the book and instead seek established medical advice. Just go to quackwatch.com, well known debunker of less than scientific studies and bogus health and nutrition theories, and read how much credence they give to the same ideas espoused in this book. I would add, who better to present the medical evidence than McCully himself, who in 1969, first described the vascular pathology [of heart disease] as it relates to homocysteine levels?
Not Worth The Money.......2004-03-15
This book does a disservice for those who really want helpful information about diet.. Dr. McCully did not do himself any favors by allowing his daughter, Martha, a Fashion Magazine Beauty writer to co-author it.. just very badly written.. and it undermines his medical crediblity..
Don't waste your time or money.. if you need advice.. go to a reputable medical web site....
Heart-health without cholesterol fear -a best read!.......2004-01-03
This book gives easy, doable and simple prevention solutions to heart disease, including increasing B vitamins that lower a natural blood-vessel toxin we all -without exception- make, homocysteine.
Dr. McCully discovered the vital role of this molecule in heart disease [now with roles in over 100 diseases] but his insistence that it is NOT cholesterol or fat that cause bad arteries got him fired from and black listed and disgraced by Harvard University, in 1978 -only to be re-offered a professorship 25 years later [he graciously accepted].
Four new studies about homocysteine now appear daily and a Nobel Prize for single handedly discovering, proving and popularizing such toxic player and risk-factor in health should be in the works.. He now shares that life-long body of wisdom with the public. The good news is that ANYONE can lower his/her homocysteine with a high strength multi-B vitamin pill, the only therapy. Easy to read and well edited, this is the FIRST book you should read, and as a bonus, it will make you feel better about cholesterol.
Heh, any heart-health book with a high nutrient but high cholesterol recipe for chicken-liver spread with egg and butter deserves notice. Not only that -McCully was as right then as he is now, it is a lack of micronutrients that is so dangerous, and this includes omega-3 oil and the '"B" healthy' B vitamins.
This book is as vital for your doctor or cardiologist and buying them a copy too may be one of the smartest things you could do. Their life is a hard one with the drug-interests dominating much of the landscape. They should appreciate scientifically sound data about non-toxic non-drug nutritional prevention options, and it is here that Dr. McCully filled in much of the puzzle picture.
I add my voice to the very first reviewer, Dr. Willett, Chair of Harvard's Nutrition Department, in warmly recommending this important yet easy to read book, Eddie Vos Sutton Qc Canada www.health-heart.org E-mail: vos@health-heart.org

Customer Reviews:
Not even healthy!.......2007-09-20
I received this book and was shocked that the recipes aren't even healthy! They use butter, sugar, flour, etc. I guess they mean healthy compared to fast food?
Recipes are so-so!!!!.......2005-05-03
I bought this book when I was pregnant hoping that it would help me eat right. While the recipes might be healthy, the actual recipes itself aren't too tasty. Also, the pictures don't do it justice. I think I found about three recipes that I actually liked in this book. And these three recipes weren't super great. The times I did make them, I made them mostly since they were healthy and not so much for taste. For me, this wasn't the best book of recipes for pregnant women and if I had done it again, I probably wouldn't have purchased this book. My advice for anyone looking to buy this book is that you should go to a bookstore and look through it. That way you can see for yourself whether you would really like the recipes in this book and if this is something you would really want.

Customer Reviews:
Not sold on this book.......2007-09-29
Annie is a great designer whose knit patterns I've come to love, so thought I'd give this book a try as well. Although the photography is second to none and inspiring the patterns, for me, lacked indepth directions. They need to be more complete. I also feel that its the basic same pattern over and over just extended to a greater width and more beads with slight variations, primarily cuff/choker designs. Actually the pieces look uncomfortable to wear.
I like this one..........2007-07-05
For as long as I have crocheted, I never really considered doing jewelry until lately when I started doing kumihimo braiding. As in many crochet books, patterns are recycled and predictable. But I have to say this book has provided me with a reason to rethink and maybe give the craft a try. The explanations and directions are not over explained, the photography is lovely and the designs inspiring. You shouldn't use this book to learn to crochet, have a better than beginner understanding of how to knit or crochet and doing a little research at your local bead store (we have some great ones here in DC) and handling some tools at the local hardware shop (not all needle-nose pliers are equal) wouldn't hurt either.
Beautiful book, great inspiration and instruction.......2007-07-03
There are some really nice designs in this book, and just a few which are a little over the top that I probably will never make. Most of them are quite 'wearable'. The book is filled with amazing photography where you can clearly see the details of the wire pieces.
Plus, there are great chapters on how to knit with wire, and how to crochet with wire--very informative. The book is made up of the following chapters:
Necklaces
Bracelets
Sets
Earrings and Pins
Knitting with wire
Crocheting with wire
Finishing wire pieces
Resources (great recommendations on where and what to buy)
If you like this book, you might also look at "Wire Jewelry" by Kate Pullen. Very similar subject matter, but completely different designs.
Great way to start.......2007-06-14
This book has beautiful projects to make. The instructions are fairly simple and helpful. Though there are some areas where I wish that they had better pictures to explain, I did find that the descriptions are pretty accurate (especially when telling you what the wire should feel like and how you should feel like you are over-exaggerating your movements). I highly recommend this book to a beginner, but even more so for an intermediate wire-knitter who just wants to be inspired by some beautiful projects.
Disappointed.......2007-06-07
There weren't dozens of products. There were several errors in patterns. And these are expensive little things to make.

Customer Reviews:
Viking Knit.......2007-09-04
This book was very helpful to me for learning the viking knit. This is a knitting technique to make wire jewelry. The projects are easy to follow and made with inexpensive artistic wire.
Addictive.......2006-03-20
This book is wonderful. Frugal as I am, I must have checked it out of the library five or six times.
The instructions for viking knitting are wonderful. And I've read many online instructions that were hopelessly confusing. But I was able to complete very nice projects with the aid of this little jewel of a book.
The projects are wonderful, and they provide a good sample of ideas which get your creative thoughts going.
I wished that I owned a knitting machine.
This book should be highly recommended!
Better books are out there.......2006-02-25
I agree with the two previous reviewers. This book is not about using knitting needles, much of it involves machine knitting. The title could have been more descriptive of the contents.
For the Viking knitting, there are several better books.
On the other hand, if you aspire to making aluminum jewelry for your pre-teen this may be a good book for you, especially if you have one of those little knitting machines.
I'd suggest visiting the library to look at the book before buying it, however.
3 types of knitting - needles, weaving, machine.......2005-09-28
A small book, about 6x7 inches and 90 pages. An interesting book with unique projects - jewelry, boxes, and the knitted scarf on cover and flowers (both require knitting machine).
The findings section demonstrates several types of closings. This is important as colored wire cannot be soldered as when making silver jewelry, therefore "cold" connections must be used. Nowhere does she show how to add those findings to the jewelry.
Hand knitting section has 9 projects, much of the jewelry w/ beads,
Viking knitting (this turns out like the spool knitting we did as kids)is the weaving of the wire around an allen wrench. As allen wrenchs are inexpensive (a set can be had for under $2) this is accessible to those who wish to try the technique. Here there are 9 projects.
Machine knitting - this requires a knitting machine and is therefore not easily accessable to all. I would guess there is not much written on the subject. For those who would like to try using wire with a machine, it would be a godsend. 5 projects are made w/ the same knitted flower and there are 4 other projects.
While interesting, if I were to do it over, I would only buy her crochet book.
misleading....deceptive...not for hand knitters!.......2003-08-26
I knit a lot and was interested in a book to bring my skills to wire. I bought this book thinking, reasonably, that this book would help.
You should know that the lovely pieces in this book were almost all machine knit. There are only a few pieces that were knit by hand....and none of the great pieces.
Absolutely skip this book unless you have a knitting machine and are interested in this technique for that purpose. Had the book been called "Machine Knitting with Wire" I'd have had no complaint. I'd have not bought the book.

really excellent.......2007-01-16
This book is so interesting and unique, I bought it for my boyfriend's mother who has TONS of gardening books, but she didn't have any quite like this one. It's called medicinal herbs, but I feel like it would be more accurately named holistic or complete herbs, because it really covers the whole range from planting and gardening to identifying and using herbs. And it's perky and interesting throughout.

The book is straightforward, authoratative and easy to read. The authors are not ivory tower academics: they have had plenty of hands-on experience. As a college/university textbook it should be compulsory reading. As a professional text, it is a necessary purchase.

Book Description
Part biography, part art history -- a thoroughly engaging look at one man’s life and his phenomenal influence on the world of contemporary art.
Bill Reid was at the forefront of the modern-day renaissance of Northwest Coast Native art; but his art, and his life, was not without controversy. Like the raven -- the trickster and principal figure in countless Haida myths -- Bill Reid reinvented himself several times over. Born to a partly Haida mother and a father of German and Scottish descent, his public persona as a Haida Indian seems to have been as much a product of journalists, art patrons, museum curators and others in the non-Native establishment as of Bill Reid himself. It is clear that Reid’s art arose from the tension that existed between his Native and white artistic perceptions.
Award-winning biographer and cultural historian Maria Tippett became intrigued by this enigmatic figure who referred to his own early works as “artefakes,” yet to this day continues to inspire new generations of Northwest Coast artists, including Robert Davidson and Jim Hart. But she questions whether Reid’s status as the architect of contemporary Native art is fair and accurate, given that artists such as Mungo Martin had been keeping the tradition alive since the beginning of the twentieth century. Most controversially, she explores how Reid brought a sensibility formed through his white heritage to the reinvention of Native art.
By asking difficult questions about Reid’s life and work, and by analyzing the works of other Native artists since the beginning of the twentieth century, Tippet gives the reader the defining portrait of Bill Reid -- one of Canada’s most enigmatic and beloved artists.
Bill Reid’s work can be found in private and public art galleries and museums all over the world. The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia houses the famous The Raven and The First Men and many smaller masterworks. The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, a monumental bronze sculpture over four metres high, is on display at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. The British Museum, the Musée de l’Homme in Paris and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa also hold impressive examples of the work of this extraordinary and imaginative artist.

Book Description
In April 1816 Patrick Sellar was brought to trial in Inverness for culpable homicide for his treatment of the Highlanders of Strathnaver, the most northerly part of the Scottish highlands. In the process of evicting them from their ancient lands he had allegedly burnt houses, destroyed mills and wrecked pastures. There is perhaps no more hated nor reviled individual in Highland history. This outstanding new book, however, gives a balanced assessment of the man, a vivid account of a terrible episode in Highland history, and a riveting narration of a tormented life. Richard's book is an account of Sellar's life and times: that he was ruthless, avaricious, devious and cruel is beyond question. But his letters suggest a streak of idealism: did he really believe that the displaced highlanders would be better off, better fed, educated and housed in their new homes? Have the Highlands in the end become more productive and prosperous? In the course of his fast-moving and gripping account, Eric Richards looks carefully at these vexed questions.

Reviled and praised Patrick Sellar.......2000-10-08
Eric Richards very readable book explores the myths and the facts of Sellar's reputation as the Sutherland factor and sheep-farmer most responsible for the Highland 'clearances' of 1810-1825. Beginning with his early days as a young lawyer in Moray, the book traces his first ventures into Sutherland and his employment by the Duchess of Sutherland to 'improve' the estate. Detailed background is given for the policies of the Estate, with engrossing detail of the people, events and activity of the period. His later life as a sheepfarmer in his own right is followed from his trial for murder (among other things), his subsequent dismissal as Factor for the Duchess, to his reputation as a wealthy and successful farmer, and the largest tenant of the Estate. This Sellar is truly an extraordinary man, not at all likable nor admirable, but tremendously intriguing. Anyone with roots in the Highlands should read this book to begin know the man behind the villiany and the 'improvements' of the Highlands.
