Don't bother with this book.......2006-12-29

I'm a graduate student (Ph.D. level program) and was looking for materials I could use for references in my school psychology class. I also have a child with delayed social skills, so I had a more personal interest in looking at this book.

I found this book to be of little use, professionally as well as personally. The research was sorely lacking, and the tips and suggestions were fairly rudimentary and geared toward lower elementary school youth.

There are far better products out there, so save your money. I sent this one back.

Lots of good advice and skills to teach.......2005-02-24

I checked this book out of my son's school libruary in an effort to help him interface more successfully with his classmates. As an eight-year-old, he's just begining to learn how to deal with the many social/emotional issues that arise in the classroom and on the playground. McEwan's book gave me some excellent ideas on how to help my son improve the way he communicates with his peers. It's a good reference for helping my son solve social problems and improve his friendships.

I bought this booking looking for some tools that I could use to help my son with making friends. The bottom line of the book seems to be that the parents are modeling bad behaviour or your kid isn't really having problems. The book was not helpful.

Predock is the George Jetson of our day. He ia a prime speciman of a spaceman. The man knows space. This is not so much a review of the product I received from Amazon as it is a prelude to a Predock. As you move yourself toward the crafting of your space and before your space craft blasts off, go for a test drive with Predock. He will put the rocket in your proverbial pocket. He will put the capital D on your dreamhouse. Predock is not the product but all props to Amazon for hooking me up with the man and his work. I am feeling deeply satisfied and inspired.

a stunning book.......2001-02-23

This is a beautifully produced book with wonderful photographs that capture the essence of Predock's work, the magical interplay of light and shadow. A characteristic of Predock residences is the interdigitation of the house and the land so that it appears as if the house almost grew out of and/or grew into the earth (pp.46-7, 82-3). The siting of the Boulder House (pp.46-7)against the majestic barren New Mexico environ is bold and assertive but at the same time is pitched in perfect harmony with its surroundings(pp.38-9). It embodies the primordial purpose of a domicile, a shelter from the harsh elements of nature and a haven where the inhabitant inside feels snug and protected. A unique feature of Predock's buildings is his almost metaphysical approach to design so that the structure seems to morph into a kind of mythic place, evocative of some distant place/ancient times/primordial culture. This is exemplified by the Fuller house as illustrated on pages 86-7. The Fuller house is classical without appearing derivative. It is timeless in its suggested monumentality. Predock's designs should withstand the vagaries of time. Though he is a gifted master of modernism, he is a universal architect of all times and all places because of his almost mystical reverence for the land and his profound appreciation of the "geological strata" of culture encoded in the place where his building is situated. Because he also understands stage craft from his background in dance performance, he is a clever stage master and understands the emotional impact of well choreographed presentations. (See the boulders spilling down to the pool on pages 100-1.) He is also a brilliant colorist, as exemplified by the elegantly tinted exteriors of his houses which blend in so seamlessly with the background landscape without the artifice of mimicking nature (pp. 86-7, 104-5, 120-1). This book does an admirable job of capturing these special attributes of Preodock's designs.

In this book one will find dramatic buildings and spaces of amazing beauty and grace, especially nice are the many color photographs of the Spencer Theater for the Preforming Arts, and many other important projects as well. Accompanying the photos are wonderfully written, almost poetic texts describing the architect's philosophy and process. This book will not be put away and forgotten but read and viewed over and over. Predock's forms are elegantly simple, but rich in texture, color, material, detail and meaning.

I Need Something More Substantial.......2001-02-25

This book, from the outset looked like a scrap book. In fact, it contained drawings (sketches, probably a better word), clay models made by Antoine Predock during his many trips overseas over the years. It also contained sketches of architectural buildings designed by him. FYI, the sketches were more like outlines composed by a confident individual rather than technical drawings. Artists would relate more to those. Antoine wrote a brief introductory essay mentioning that it was essential to get both the feel of a place & what he had read about it before undergoing with the design. The end result, ie. the building would remain pertinent to its environment. Antoine is well known for his sensitivity & his inclination towards the spiritual aspect of the place & it showed tremendously in this scrap book. Antoine also stated that he had to sample collages of the place so that his colleagues would utilise them onwards for the design. I can't say I learn a lot about this great architect from this book but I suppose readers who are fond of him would find this book complementary to other architecture books about him.
