Good reference book but too vague for me.......2001-08-30

First of all let me say that I am in the securities business and I only bought this book because it was a required text in a class I was taking. I have some fundamental differences of opinion with the offer on some of the advice she offers. Mainly I disagree with the chapter on life insurance and stocks. The author endorses purchasing stocks and for the average investor mutual funds provide the added diversification that most people need, especially in this market with some stocks down 80% from their highs last year. She also says you should only buy annual renewable term insurance and only buy term it if you need insurance for less than 10 years and THEN buy convertible term. Why would you want to convert to cash value insurance? You buy 20-25yr level term and invest the difference if you don't smoke and are reasonably healthy you can get three times the coverage with level term for less peer month. Then you can invest the difference and be self insured by retirement. Now maybe she sells this stuff, I don't know.
I also think that it gives you a lot of information but due to the format it can't give you any sort of in depth information.

I do have to applaud the calender in the front of the book though. It is a good tool to help you keep your financial house in order.

The most comprehensive, easy-to-use book of its kind.......2000-01-27

Since becoming an investment professional in 1988, I've been purchasing this book regularly for my library since it caught my eye in the early 90's. Dunnan employs a simple, easy-to-read style in compiling an investment sourcebook that serves simultaneously as a "how-to" manual and a reference guide, without implying that the reader is some kind of dummy.

Each of the 36 chapters contains easy to understand, practical information interspersed with helpful hints and cautionary asides (denoted by a checked box and a little cannonball bomb, respectively) that add a clever dimension to the financial discourse. What impresses me most about this book is that Dunnan has no bias (unlike other noteworthy publications) when it comes to the topic of investment advice and fees. She provides encouragement and insight as to how to get the most out of your own efforts, if you feel comfortable on your own, or out of your investment professional, if you don't. Topics range from beginning to complex investment vehicles, choosing financial professionals, financing major purchases, on-line investing, and considerations related to insurance and retirement. There's even a chapter on the tax status of your investments, arranged alphabetically by subject. All throughout, there are numerous listings of alternative information sources (e.g., organizations and publications) to bolster your education. In the back of the book you'll find a decent glossary (conspicuously absent in other books) of Wall Street jargon. Unless your goal is to day-trade, this book is for everyone who has a question involving the world of money and investments.

This book does a good job teaching the basics of flower arranging. I am now able to read other books about flower arranging that I didn't understand before

A good solid beginning.......2006-02-07

This isn't the longest flower-arranging book in the under-$20 category, nor the most profusely illustrated, but Judith Blacklock's TEACH YOURSELF FLOWER ARRANGING has considerable merits of its own. The British series of TEACH YOURSELF books covers everthing from learning Afrikaans to practicing Zen, and this is a worthy, relatively short (120 pp.) work that doesn't stray too far from its promise to teach just the basics.

One aspect of this book I noted in particular -- and I wish the several other flower-arranging books I own had tried to do as well -- is cover the guiding principles of form, balance and symmetry when it comes to fashioning any particular arrangement. Other books in this price range roll out the technique and sometimes mention that such-and-such a bouquet embodies such-and-such a principle; but this isn't as useful, IMO, as Blacklock's considerate approach that teaches the theory first and then immediately puts it into practice. This is not to say that TEACH YOURSELF FLOWER ARRANGING is hung up on "the rules"; photographed arrangements run the gamut from a simple flower-and-eucalyptus setup in a vase to a boundary-pushing and quite striking display of a field of roses perched atop a regiment of identically red chili peppers. (In this case it's the texture, not any color differential, that lends drama.)

Since I am a firm believer that one must know the rules even in order to flout them, I appreciated the Blacklock approach. I really did "teach myself" the beginning techniques of the art, and better yet, learned to think for myself. Those looking for strict floral "recipes" should go elsewhere.

Everything in a Nutshell!.......2000-02-05

I have several books on floral arts and this tiny book is the most concise. While taking a class at the NY Botanical Gardens, I found it to be a more effective resource that the course book! This book is small and to the point. It contains design techniques and many illustrations. I also love her book Flower Arranging Style, which is much more elaborate.

This is the most helpful book in my flower-arranging library. The author explains the nitty-gritty detail of selecting and conditioning the flowers, the mechanics of holding the arrangement together, and the development of traditional floral designs. I bought copies for three friends.

Sally Court is one of the bright new British garden designers, and in The Modern Garden Makers she explores the wide variety of gardening ideas and trends coming out of English gardens and flower shows. This oversized book is filled with color photographs; some focus on the familiar brick walls, formal ponds, and mixed herbaceous borders we think of in connection with British gardeners, but there is nothing quaint or traditional about most of these images. Showcased is the work of a dozen avant-garde designers, from tiny courtyard gardens in London to huge estates with naturalistic streams and ponds, stucco walls, and jungle plantings.

The unusual images in The Modern Garden Makers bring to mind a story, perhaps apocryphal, about British gardening's grande dame, Penelope Hobhouse, who reputedly suggested that in the future, gardens will be devoid of plants. Gardeners will be relieved to see that this book proves there is a middle ground between traditional uses of plants and no plants at all. Flowery meadows coexist with huge metal sculptures, ponds are bridged by cobalt blue decking accenting the yellow-striped blades of Iris pseudacorus 'Variegata,' and mellow brick walls are reflected in smooth watercourses ringed in grasses. Best book on true love.......2007-07-28

I was surprised by the book. Rather than preaching on how to get a mate, or what he/she meant - this book gives a glimpse into the true essence of love: self love, wholeness, respect and serenity through zen examples. It was a joy reading and learning from.
Also recommended Don Miguel Ruiz's The Mastery of Love.

Great book but..........2006-04-05

This is an excellent book but only for those who have some understanding of what Zen Buddhism is and generally agree with its priciples, ideas and 'world-view'. If, on the other hand, you think that Buddhism/Zen is not your cup of tea or find it confusing/esoteric/strange, then you really won't get much out of this book.

For those of us who are lay or formal practitioners of Zen (it doesn't matter for how long), this book is one of it's kind in that it takes specific Zen practices/priciples and relates them to challenges and struggles a person faces when she/he is in a relationship.

My only issue is with some of the stories of 'real-life' people used by the author. They are meant to illustrate some point the author is trying to make but they end up being annoying, irrelevant or worse, counter-productive.

Overall: Highly recommended

Zen and the Art of Falling in Love...A Simple Review.......2005-08-08

This book has most definetly changed my outlook on how I see myself in relationships. It has helped me to take a more realistic and responsible stance when it comes to developing and maintaining loving relationships. It was a great and easy read. It was also one of those books where I got out my highlighter and marked all of the places in the book where I really wanted to remember that particular message or lesson. This book is one that I have recommended and even purchased for some of my good friends...it has really changed a lot for me! I am so glad this book popped into my life. I know it's one I'll continue to go back and read whenever I find myself struggling in relationships. Brenda Shoshanna is an utter genius!

An Expensive way of Propping up a Wonky Table.......2002-06-01

In first chapter Arthur Chandler states that, due to Shepard's desire for no biographical books to be written until thirty years after his death, he simply offers "a look through the Shepard Archive". He then procedes to write an autobiography padded out with illustrations. Maybe I am missing a trick or perhaps Chandler has found a few:

Firstly I can only deduce that "through the Shepard Archive" is an encrypted citation of a special infringement authorization policy granted by the Archive, as I find little evidence of close examination of the Archive works and rather a lot of biography.

Secondly he entitles the book "The Story of E H shepard: The Man who Drew Pooh". He later explains rather condescendingly in Chapter two that,in actual fact, Shepard was not just the man who drew Pooh, and that the book will therefore steer away from this aspect of his work. Perhaps there will be a few disapointed buyers out there, considering the misleading title. Maybe the book should be titled "The E H Shepard Story: The man who Drew Pooh, but this is Not what this Book is About".

Thirdly (and this is the unforgivable one) it is a very poorly written book. Crucial facts which should have been brought to light early on seem to pop up out of the blue later on, reminding one of a badly told joke. And what is wrong with a good old fashioned paragraph with a general point? A lot of facts are simply laid down in isolated sentences in the style of some sort of mystic. To be fair, this aspect of the writing is in keeping with the 'pseudo-art-history' style of the book which seeks to place Shepard and his works in a preserving vacume - away from history, and the history of art, and supposedly away from biography.

I read this book in an afternoon and was pleased that its over-simplistic style allowed me to wade - or should I say paddle?- through its 174 pages. In more ways than one Chandler has his cake and eats it, and a very bland cake it is too.

Excellent Piece of Work.......2001-06-25

I thought this bok was very interesting and well written. Being from Co. TYrone myself,it was nice to see familiar towns and places in a book.Its bound to be difficul growing up in those difficult times especially being a Catholic Priest, Dr.Daly lived an interesting life an is very well respected.. Fair Play to him.You should defintley check it out. His recording of events on Bloody Sunday are interesting and truthful of the murder that happened on that day.Give him the credit he deserves.

Jottings it is.......2001-06-20

"Jottings' he says and he does not lie. The superficiality of this book was a great disappointment. Here's what I got from this book: childhood was nice. School was hard. Italy was pretty. Parish life was fine; but the Troubles were hard. There are a few moments when he's writing about the Troubles when he seems to connect with his heart--and a few where his sense of humor finds him. On the whole, though, this was utterly flat.
