Peter Guttman proves, by dint of beautiful photography and evocative prose, that romance is not in the least bit dead. People say the world is getting smaller, but when you see snorkelers swimming with manta rays in Bora Bora, followed by white-robed mystics in Lalibela, Ethiopia and rail-riders living the good life aboard the Eastern and Oriental Express in Malaysia, the world regains some of its size, which is to say, its mystery and appeal. Worlds to Imagine offers, along with introductions to 29 of the world's most alluring places, the image to jump-start the fantasy that may, if all goes well, lead to the trip you've been yearning for. --Stephanie Gold

The perfect appetizer for the armchair traveler........2002-05-11
Watch grizzlies from a "floating lumber camp" or follow a silverback mountain gorilla in the mists of the Ugandan rainforest. The tiny snapshots in WORLDS TO IMAGINE are here merely to whet your appetite. There are only a few pictures -- usually only two -- of each place. The descriptions are poetic (sometimes overly so). But I really enjoyed the language and the mental meanderings. Most coveted getaway: green blue sea of Bora Bora. Biggest disappointment: only two pictures of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Least desirable vacation destination: Antarctica.
The author is really good at creating verbal imagery to make a mental picture. From Bali, he brings us the sound of "tintinnabulary gongs and xylophones." And here's an example from Burma: "Ahead, Mandalay is chockablock with meditation centers and nipple-shaped stupas that milk your attention amidst bonging temple gongs and chow lines of saffron-robed monks seeking handouts."
Still and all, it's a travel guide, conveniently listing hotels, contacts, phone numbers, prices, etc. at the back of the book. I suggest you keep this book by your bed and read only one at a time right before sleep. Pleasant journeys!
Evocative.......2002-01-15
As an art critic I repsond to both the visual and the written word. And when reading Peter Guttman's "Worlds to Imagine" I found myself carried away not only by the exquisite photography of unique destinations but the tone poems of prose that accompanied each location. Brimming with imagery and told in an original voice, the text stands to enhance the sensual experience the photography evokes. Mr. Guttman's eye for detail and story telling are found in both. Soon I was fantasizing trips around the globe, excited by the prospect of discovery and exploration. I recommend this book to anyone who dares to dream.
flimsy.......2000-06-23
Disappointed barely describes the annoyance I felt when I saw this flimsy charicature of a book. It barely deserves the title, and...one can feel little more than ripped off, even if it does contain some very pretty photographs. The dimensions of the 'book' are very small. The self described "one-of-a-kind guidebook" offers a mere one or two paragraphs of poetic, stream-of-consciousness description of each destination, with very few, if any, actual facts about the area, its culture or other aspects that may intrigue the reader. You are essentially left with a handful (or less) of photographs that you could have found in any number of books. I don't often hand out cutting critiques of other peoples creative endeavors. I am too aware of how much work it takes to pull together a project and launch it into the world. But, as I mentioned earlier, this can barely be described as a book. A colorful hardcover flier might be more appropriate. Very little effort is apparent in this project and my money would have been better spent elsewhere. I do wonder if Peter Guttman may have done a better book if the publishers would have given him the support to do so. I like Peter Guttman - I like his style, I think he is a good writer and I admire and respect the way that he has lived his life. Yet this book just isn't what it could have been. So I am left wondering if the critic from Glamour magazine who is quoted on the back cover as saying "the most inspiring book of the decade", is actually Peter Guttman's close personal friend. That said the book does 'mention' 29 beautiful places in the world to visit, some of them genuinely unusual. What a shame that the author and Fodor's didn't produce a 'real' book about them. If it existed I would certainly buy it.
An inspirational and beautifully photographed book........1999-04-29
I loved Worlds to Imagine because of its dreamy and lushous photographs and poetic, sensual editorial descriptions. It is a book that features exotic and fascinating destinations that have inspired me to not only go traveling, but I have given it to many friends as gifts. The text is delicious to read and the photographs are ones that I would like to have framed in my home. I saw Peter Guttman at a book signing and he is as vibrant in person as his photographs and words are in the book.
Inspiring photos that truly capture each destination.......1999-04-26
It is said that a picture speaks a 1000 words and that is truly the case with Peter Guttman's Nights to Imagine. One taking the time to immerse themselves in these unique and beautiful photographs will truly understand the beauty as well as the attraction of these unusual "landmarks". (Plus all pertinent details are in the back of the book!)

Some 10 million Americans use full-commission stockbrokers today--and most of them are overpaying for under performance, writes analyst John G. Wells in Kiss Your Stockbroker Goodbye: A Guide to Independent Investing. However, Wells argues, a series of widely accessible alternatives now makes it easier to forego this always costly and often ineffectual investment route. He outlines the steps needed, and the resources available, to all investors who would rather serve as their own brokers.
Book Description
It's a personal-finance mutiny: record numbers of individual investors are taking their portfolios into their own hands. Now that ordinary citizens can easily access investment information and trade shares, the magic wisdom of a broker is becoming an outdated myth. In this brilliant call to arms, John G. Wells exposes the truth: most brokers don't even match the average return of the stock market.
Wells's clear, accessible advice takes the mystery out of buying stocks and provides a detailed plan of action. For beginning and experienced investors alike, Wells simplifies the process and introduces all the tools needed to execute your own investment activities with tips such as:How to find and work with discount brokers Where to find the most reliable information, including hundreds of print and electronic sources Who to ask when you need advice, how much they'll charge, and why their advice will be less biased than a broker's A detailed directory of financial products and services A sound, easy-to-implement system for selecting stocks, bonds, and mutual funds Kiss Your Stockbroker Goodbye finally puts your finances in the hands of the one person who has a totally vested interest in your success: you.

Author Comments.......2005-07-08
In my classes and talks, I am often asked about the advantages of my book, QuickBooks 2005 QuickSteps. As I answer those business folks, the biggest advantages are the color screenshots, step by step approach and the huge variety of tips as found in all the QuickSteps books. The 10 chapters are laid out in the order that most people need them:
Chapter 1 - Stepping into QuickBooks 2005
Chapter 2 - Creating a Company File
Chapter 3 - Working with Lists
Chapter 4 - Set up and Use your Bank Accounts
Chapter 5 - Entering and Paying Bills
Chapter 6 - Selling Products and Services
Chapter 7 - Managing Inventory Items
Chapter 8 - Customizing and Maintaining QuickBooks
Chapter 9 - Paying Employees and Taxes and Tracking Time
Chapter 10 - Creating Reports
If you have any comments about my book or QuickBooks in general, I'd love to hear them!
Take care, c.

Inaccurate information and bad advice.......2006-08-12
I spent many hours re-doing a Quickbooks file after a client used this book to learn how to enter transactions and set up Quickbooks. When she showed me the book I was surprised at the number of wrong instructions and terrible advice about handling transactions. I always thought publishers had experts check their books, but I guess this publisher doesn't. If you want to learn to use Quickbooks correctly and efficiently choose another book.

Customer Reviews:
Must Have.......2007-05-13
This book is a great addition to furniture maker's library. The designes are classic and a delight to peruse and use. It requires a user to have some skill, but that is OK.
The introduction or "how to" accomplish certain tasks in the beginning is very useful.
great.......2007-01-11
I bought it for my husband who is a big fan of the stickley/craftsman style. i can't wait for him to build me "stuff"!!!
Woodcraft antiques.......2005-09-06
Great and very historic book, can't wait to get busy building some of the furniture shown in this book. Very clear diagrams, explainations, and items were shown in model rooms.
Plans Without Frills.......2004-07-06
By happenstance I came across this volume before encountering the first volume. While it provides the minimum basic information to build some 30 pieces of furniture based on Arts & Crafts designs it failed to inspire me to purchase the first volume. The primary reason is that while the information provided is good, there is nothing to inspire me to build or adapt any particular piece. Why? Because Robert Lang relies a bit too much on my imagination.
I'm a bit of a free spirit in the wood shop. I like combining features I like, adding a few twists of my own, and taking a few, judicious risks. Lang seems to have unerringly chosen the simplest, and often the dullest work of a carpentry movement that was anything but simple and dull. Perhaps this should have been titled 'Craftsman Furniture for Beginners.' It would have captured the approach more accurately.
This is a book that would have been improved immensely by the inclusion of a handful of glossy pages with photographs of the completed designs. Something to fire the imagination and make a few of the mysteries a bit clearer. A few pieces (all china cabinets oddly enough) exhibit some of the grace of Stickley's best work. But other than some details of construction, there are other sources that capture the essence and style better.
That being said, it is a good start for a beginner who wants to get some straightforward work underway before tackling the complexities of which Arts & Crafts work is capable. But I would still recommend spending the time perusing a few coffee table books of the movement. Arts & Crafts wasn't just a style, it was an aesthetic movement that continues to have an influence on modern furniture making.
Great Book of PLans, But Beware of Errors!.......2004-02-08
I have both of Robert Lang's books on Craftsman Furniture. They are perhaps the best books of their type that I have seen. I am on my third project from his books and look forward to completing many more. The plans in the books are not for the novice as there is no project-by-project advice or guidance. You must figure-out the cuts and details for yourself. There are 16 pages of general information that is quite helpful to those who know how to apply such information to specific situations.
Unfortunately, there are some dimension errors that lead to cutting lumber too short, wasting both time and money. For example, on page 130 there are two errors that cost me dearly. Apparently the book was not reviewed closely enough. Still, I would like to thank Mr. Lang for his books and look forward to his future contributions!

Customer Reviews:
Good book for managing pain.......2007-08-13
I bought this book hoping it would help with my delivery. It had some good tips on managing labor pain. However, the more I read, the more I felt that to use the tips, you have to have a good labor coach that believes in hypnosis as much as you do. My husband is a skeptic, so it was hard for me to use the tips, knowing that he didn't really "buy into" hypnosis. I used some of the tips for the first part of my labor but did not use any of them during hard labor. I would suggest this book to anyone interested, with the above caveat.
pain free labor.......2007-02-20
I bought this for my daughter. She found it interesting & was able to use one thing from it for sure. Finding her "happy place" when in labor helped her get through some of the pain.
She ended up giving birth with not one single drug!
Wonderful book!.......2006-01-07
I highly recommend this book!! I researched many books and techniques and the ones that I learned in this book worked the best for me. It allowed me to have a natural childbirth, without drugs, of a 9lb, 5oz baby! I will admit that the labor was not "pain-free", but it was certainly very manageable. I have experienced much greater pain from back problems. The book is written in an easy to follow manner, with many excellent scripts to read during delivery. I especially liked the section that tests to see if you are a good candidate for hypnosis as well as identifying which techniques will work best for you. Great Great resource!!!
Great and very useful book.......2005-10-17
I'm so glad that I bought this book. It has helped me tremendously with preparing for labor. I plan on using the techniques taught in this book when I go into labor (in the next few weeks!). They are really easy to learn and work well for me! I recommend this book to anyone who is planning on having a natural labor, and espcially to anyone who is going to have a home birth. With practice, these affirmations that you learn can help put your subconscious mind in a different place, and not feel any pain. Five stars, GREAT BOOK!

Etchings and more.......2000-12-02
This fascinating book presents in loving detail the work of an artist who subtly commingles beauty and horror, angels and beasts. Traian Filip was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1955 and experienced the repression of the Ceausecu regime. In 1989, he arrived in New York and then settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where his work took on a new grace, but with an evident loneliness for his family in Romania. He took his own life in 1993. For most of his life he concentrated on intaglio etchings, later producing paintings on found materials. The book poignantly relates his personal history to his artistic production. It gives exellent renditions of many of his beautiful and intriguing etchings and paintings.
