Book Description
Love has a way of making you sing. Songs like "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Stand by Your Man," "Love Me Tender," and "Livin' on a Prayer" come to mind. Three thousand years ago, King Solomon of Israel was inspired by his bride to write a love song. He considered it a masterpiece, and it is simply known as the Song of Solomon. The song is filled with passionate and insightful principles for relationships.
In today's changing culture, relationships can be incredibly challenging. That Crazy Little Thing Called Love provides relevant and encouraging reminders of God's plan for married living from the Song of Solomon. And, besides all that, it's just plain fun! The soundtrack of That Crazy Little Thing Called Love is divided into five playlists:
* Love is a crazy thing
* Thriving after "I do"
* Sex in marriage
* Fighting fair
* Making love last

Heart warming look at Alzheimers.......2006-11-30
I recommend this book for anyone with a relative that is going through alzheimers or memory loss. This book is a true story of the Auther caring for her Mother and shows that love can survive the toughest of ordeals that the disease can put you through.
Book Description
This book explains how several much-decried problems in the U.S. health system--glaring gaps in the quality and efficiency of care, high rates of uninsurance, and out-of-control costs--can be resolved by empowering patients.
Customer Reviews:
A great set of proposals for discussing the critical reforms needed in our healthcare system.......2006-01-01
This short and focused book offers five suggestions to help lower our society's overall healthcare expenses, improve availability, while putting it on a more sound footing for controlling future cost growth. Discussing healthcare is a complicated issue and much of the public discussion is distorted by various kinds of self-interest, lack of knowledge about the technical aspects of the problem (both medical and economic), and different views of what the desirable outcomes would be. This one hundred-page book is a wonderful basic foundation so we can discuss the health care issues from a common ground.
Our present private health care system suffers from several market distortions that prevent efficiencies. First, it arose from a wartime wage & price controlled economy in 1942 when companies began offering "fringe benefits" since they couldn't raise wages. The next biggest problem is that what we really have is pre-paid healthcare rather than true insurance. Insurance is based on the notion of sharing risk not the notion of no-risk no cost. Imagine if we have pre-paid lunches. Wouldn't the natural inclination be to consume bigger lunches than you normally would? Maybe even combine two meals of the day? You would not want to be paying for something you weren't getting the full benefit from, so you would over consume and costs would rise. That would spur the desire for more consumption and a vicious cycle gets worse.
The notion that healthcare should be provided at no cost is pernicious. The government has no money of its own so we have to pay for our healthcare even if the government "provides" it. But worse than the payment problems this causes is the notion that we should be free to use our income on everything else but healthcare and that somehow when we use our own income for healthcare we view it as a kind of oppression. However, we use our income for many less necessary and some very foolish things. The amount of money we waste on foolish things like diet fads, pills, patent medicines, magnets & bracelets that do nothing, and various quack treatments has got to be a large fraction of our actual health care expenditure. We need to spend our money on health with greater awareness and understanding.
So, what are the five recommendations the authors make in this book?
1) Change the tax law to reduce the preference for medical-care purchases through employer-based insurance.
This is an important change because it will allow for people to make health care purchases with their own income and buy their own insurance with PRE-TAX dollars. As it is now, everything is biased towards shifting it to the employer program because anything we pay for is AFTER-TAX and therefore much more costly. Since everything is pushed to the employer pre-paid healthcare it exacerbates the over consumption problem.
2) Reform regulation markets for health insurance.
This is about lowering costs by making national insurance pools and reforming state specific regulations that add unusual costs to the insurance market through specific popular mandates. This is the suggestion I am least comfortable with, however I do understand the notion and think it is definitely worth investigating. What we don't want is a national reform that solely benefits the insurance industry shareholders at the expense of the insured the way our, say, sugar supports keep us paying four times the world price for sugar.
3) Expand provision of health information.
This has two components. The first is to limit discoverability of information that flows between organizations with the purpose of quality improvement. The second is to rate organizations and doctors in a way that provides good information to consumers of healthcare. While I like the notion in the simple abstract, the real problem with this is, for example, that not all cardiologists have the same risk profile of patient. Nor are all the same in their approach to patients. All systems of "grading" are subject to gaming and I wonder how this will be prevented in such a national system.
4) Control anticompetitive behavior by providers and insurers.
Yes, we do need real markets for market forces to do their work in cost containment. But, yes, businesses and businessmen (and women) do want to limit competition and enhance profits (rent seeking behavior in economic terms). So, one of the very most important things our lawmakers and regulators can do is ensure that a strong market and strong competition exists. There is evidence that hospitals and insurers are working to limit competition and using their influence with lawmakers to strengthen their position and raise costs. This is quite important.
5) Reform the malpractice system.
There is no question that the lottery approach to non-economic damages has driven up insurance costs to the point that access to health care providers in some states is impaired. We definitely need to control non-economic costs of malpractice lawsuits. The other aspect of reform, since these kinds of mistakes are well known and the process well understood, is to do what we can in holding down legal costs. This is fought tooth and nail by trial lawyers because they make tens of millions of dollars from these lawsuits. However, those tens of millions of dollars going to lawyers do not help the healthcare of anyone except the lawyers and the families and their employees.
You can see that I have difficulties with some aspects of the proposals in this book and you will likely have some of your own. However, I think they make a great place to start the discussion we must have for the reform that will come one way or the other. I just hope we have the will to make it a strong, active, and constructive reform rather than a passive contraction that will do much more harm than good.

Love this book!.......2007-06-11
We recently had a cocktail party, and put this book on the bar so people could check it out and try something new. It was a hit with all, which included 20-somethings to 50-somethings.
Love this little book!.......2004-08-06
I got this gift for a best friend's 21st birthday (in addition to the Little Black Book for Smoothies). Such a great book! It is hardcover spiral and has an elastic band so you can store it wherever without bending the pages. Cute cover: black book (of course) with circular green label that says the title (whereas the Smoothie book has a pink label). Very chic, cute design, something anyone would absolutely love! Had to buy another set for me!
Stired, not shaken.......2004-05-20
I was really impressed with this little book. It wasn't just a cookbook for drinks. Rather, it emphasizes the elegance of mixing drinks. Some people might think this book is a little pretentious, but then again, mixing cocktails is sort of a pretentious thing to do. The book does a good job of making the art of mixing cocktails seem very grown-up and swanky.
I'm a pleased beginner........2004-01-28
I picked up this book because it's small and it's spiral bound and lays flat when open. What is actually in the book I found to be very useful.
This book covers essential barware, glassware (with drawings), mixers/garnishes, and techniques (including how to flame a drink & how to properly layer drinks). The drink recipes are broken down into these categories: Cocktails Classique, The Martini, Urban Chic, Punch Up That Party, From the Tropics, Naughty Drinks, and Finishing Touches. The drinks I have tried so far have been very good, and have a good jumping board for alcohol to mixer ratio in each recipe.
There is also a glossary with some brief descriptions of the liquors, types of cocktails (ie Sling, Rickey), and various other terms associated with mixing.
Perhaps the most helpful part of this book is the index. This lists all the drinks first by name, then by primary alcohol, and finally by color/flavoring. Very handy when you have only one particular liquor on hand. Overall, it's perhaps the only book needed for a casual at home mixing experience.

Best yet book on making flowers from ribbon!.......2007-05-07
The instructions in this book on making beautiful flowers out of ribbon, are clear and easy to follow. I have other similar books, but this one is by far the best! Truly worth the money!
Fantastic.......2006-07-16
This is a great book on ribbon flowers. The author explains how to make the flowers so it is easy to follow and you have a flower like hers when you finish. I highly recommend this book.
book + practice = nice ribbon flowers.......2006-03-15
I've had this book for about 4 weeks and have tried making a couple types of roses and, just last night, tried making a pansy. The directions are easy to follow and, after some practice, the reader is able to make some nice looking flowers. The particular projects in the book don't appeal to me, but I could see that they would be of interest to those who like the frills and complexity of Victorian-inspired objects. The author does provide a variety of ideas for using ribbon flowers that the reader can adjust to her or his taste.
Good, but not great........2005-09-22
I have to say I was very interested in this book, but it was not exactly what I wanted. I have yet to find a ribbonwork book that is set up as clearly as possible and is really designed for a beginner. The Artful Ribbon, by Candace Kling is a treasure for those seeking old fashioned ribbonwork and is still the best reference I have found. Overall, if you are looking for how to make very realistic Roses (esp. Tea Roses) you will be absolutely thrilled with Helen Gibbs's book. Also, if you are looking for a book to teach you how to make flowers that look as realistic as possible, this is for you. Bear in mind that you are only taught how to make the flowers in the book (Pansies, violets, sweet peas, poppies, canterbury bells, bluebells, hollyhocks, fuchias, chrysanthemums, delphiniums, carnations, peonies, and gardenias). Actually, the gardenias alone may be worth the price of the book! Spectacular! You will also be taught to make only specific sizes and flowers are mostly done on stems, which makes them hard to use as embellishments on clothing. The projects in the book are not as appealing to me as playing on my own. I am still seeking the definitive book on using silk bias ribbon and, while Helen uses it when she's on the Carol Duvall show, she doesn't have many examples in this book. This is a crying shame, since I have a bunch I bought from The Store on the Corner in San Diego. I've also seen Helen's last two books and they seem to contain basically the same material. Another book to check would be A Passion for Ribbonry by Camela Nitschke.
A history, a guide, and lovely flowers, too!.......2005-05-27
Wow, what can I say? I love this book. There's a great introduction to crafting ribbon flowers which includes a history as well. The instructions are so easy to follow it's a wonder that this hobby/craft is on the brink of vanishing for good! Not only that, but it's such a beautiful craft, too. I've used the book's techniques to embellish pillows, curtains, dresses, purses... you name it! Here's the great thing: I'm usually not even good at crafts! All it takes is to buy a cute little unadorned girls' dress from, say, Target, make a few ribbon flowers to attach to the dress and you have an instant artful creation. The things I have made (or embellished) have been such a hit with my family and friends. Also, Helen Gibb is an amazing person. I've seen her a few times on HGTV (which inspired me to get this book). I went to her website and sent an e-mail saying I enjoyed her segments on HGTV and she wrote me back a letter of thanks! It wasn't a canned response, either. Great lady, great book, great craft, so go get it!

Book Description
In The Prairie Winterscape: Creative Gardening for the Forgotten Season experienced gardeners
Barbara Kam and
Nora Bryan show how to claim winter as a gardening season by exploring the different and surprising ways to create natural beauty during the "no-grow" time of year. Many prairie gardeners are unaware that their gardens can be winter wonderlands with as much visual appeal as the glorious summer landscapes they are accustomed to.
For most, the first hard frosts are a sign to put the garden to bed until spring, which in some places and some years can be as many as 260 days away. That_s a long time for an avid gardener to be "on hold," yearning to work the soil and smell the roses.
But it needn't be so.
By selecting trees and shrubs with dramatic silhouettes and colorful berries and bark, creating ornamental focal points that are enhanced by delicate rims of frost or a light blanket of snow, and leaving flower borders filled during the winter months with a collection of sturdy plants and grasses boasting interesting seed heads, prairie gardeners can redefine their favorite pastime to include the "forgotten season." It's an idea whose time has come.
Customer Reviews:
Who'da thunk? Outdoor planters for winter on the prairies!!.......2003-12-10
I love to garden and always hated our long, dreary winters. This book looks at gardening during the "off season" and argues (successfully) that it doesn't have to be off-putting at all! Now, I look outside and I see things differently. I never realized the beauty that already exists in my frosty backyard and now I know ways to improve upon it. Who would have thought that we in the cold zones could have winter containers outdoors?
This is a good book for people planning new gardens because it highlights some important considerations, for folks who like to decorate and be crafty (there's a couple of projects outlined), and to give grumpy northern gardeners something to smile about during their 4 - 6 months of winter.
This is a unique gardening book........2003-12-05
Sometimes I pick up a book and it might be okay but there's not enough new material in it to justify buying it. This new winter book presents a whole new subject. We made up some of the winter pots to add some character to the garden. It's nice to have some Winter interest relief that isn't Christmas decor. I especially liked the photos of how some common northern garden perennials look in the winter if they aren't cut down. I'd recommend this book to any gardeners who want a more attractive garden during the cold months and to be able to do it with plant material free for the taking. It's good to know what locally available plants and trees to add to the garden next growing season to keep the garden looking good year round.
I'm a happy Santa.......2003-12-03
This sure takes the pressure off gifts this Christmas. This book is perfect for the northern gardener who has everything. I'm normally a bit of a sceptic when it comes to these types of topics but this book has a lot of meat on the bones. Believe it or not I was actually looking forward to the freeze up to put some of the great ideas in the book to work.
Product Description
Parents will help children identify the beauty and hope in all cycles of life as they follow two insect friends, Lea and Nym, and the struggles one of them endures when her friend disappears. This is a tender story about loss and change, written to help parents express their views about life and death. The book may serve many purposes, such as comforting a grieving child who has lost someone close or providing facts about dragonflies to inquisitive minds. Lea's transformation into a dragonfly may even be used as a metaphor for life-after-death. The Dragonfly Door is beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson. The book is cherished by parents, grandparents and teachers. It was recently brought to life as a mini-play in Alabama to help children cope with the loss of their classmates. The following is an excerpt from the book: While Nym slept, she heard Lea's voice saying, "Follow me, Nym. I'm going to show you where I am." "Will I see you again?" Nym asked. "Only when it's time for you to die too," Lea replied. "You won't see me in the marsh ever again. But let me show you what I will look like the next time you see me. Here, close your eyes." Nym closed her eyes. "Now look at me," Lea said. Nym opened her eyes and saw ...
Customer Reviews:
The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson.......2007-09-07
The debut children's picturebook of author John Adams, The Dragonfly Door dares to confront serious topics - of loss, death, grieving, and transition. Nym and Lea are two close insect friends, but one day after Nym yells at Lea, Lea disappears. Nym searches everywhere for her missing friend, and can't find her. At last Nym falls asleep, grief-stricken, and finally hears Lea's voice one more time. "'I died and went to this special place,' Lea said, her voice full of love. 'But I didn't want you to leave,' Nym pleaded. 'I'm sorry I yelled.' 'I know you're sorry,' Lea assured her. 'I left because my water nymph body died while I was picking flowers in the reeds, not because you yelled.'" The warm, emotional colors of award-winning artist Barbara L. Gibson illustrate this highly recommended picturebook for sharing the bittersweet realities of life with young people.
Jewel's Reading Excellence Review: Helps children understand nature's life cycle.......2007-05-10
John Adams brilliantly invites the reader into the world of Nymphs and Dragonflies to explore the changes that take place when Nym's friend goes to a special place.
When I had lost a family member I had read a wonderful story called, "The Water Bug Story." John Adams adds a fresh approach to this story by focusing on friendship loss and giving a voice to his characters. With the help of Gibson's eye-catching nature illustrations, "The Dragon Fly Door" answers general questions surrounding loss, such as feelings about loss, what happens to the nymph's body when he dies, and how a nymph is transformed into a dragonfly.
Adams creatively normalizes typical friendship rivalry and takes the reader on a nature journey to discover that one chooses to resolve conflict, loss, and changes in different ways. Adams concludes the book with uncomplicated educational facts for the inquisitive science mind.
This is a great educational tool for parents, grandparents or professionals to use to help explain the uncontrollable life cycle changes and loss.

A Message of Hope for Children Who Are Grieving.......2007-02-26
As President of a nonprofit organization that reaches out to those who are grieving, I was very pleased to read a book such as The Dragonfly Door. This book provides a much needed way to offer children (and adults) a message of hope following the death of a loved one.
Children can relate to the playful nature of Nym and Lea who are the two young nymph friends, the sorrow of Nym when Lea dies, and the comforting feeling when when Nym realizes that he will one day see Lea again as a dragonfly, when he too has made his transformation into a dragonfly.
Our nonprofit organization recommends this book so highly that we have decided to make it available for purchase at all of our events.

Beautiful and excellent for all who grieve.......2007-02-18
I received this wonderfully beautiful book on the 8th anniversary of my son's graduation to Heaven ... that evening, I was able to read it with his daughter, who is now 9... I believe she gained another understanding of her Very Own Daddy in a beautiful place that we have not seen just yet ... and though she already knew he is waiting for her, this was another good reminder of that ... I was unaware of the dragonfly's life cycle and was so blessed to see how it seemingly parallels this life and the next. Thank you, John, for a wonderful way to help us all in our continuing journey with grief and the Hope we can have.
Book Description
"I urge all parents to read Maria Trozzi's book and to be ready themselves to share their children's grief.... This book will surely help in such a preparation." --T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., professor emeritus, Harvard Medical School; author of Touchpoints
Through captivating stories and thoughtful analysis, Maria Trozzi explains how to handle the difficult job of talking with children and adolescents about loss, with discussions about: * How children perceive and interpret events such as death, disability, and divorce * Guiding children through the four tasks of mourning * Helping children face funerals, wakes, and memorial services * Children's fears and fantasies: how they express them, and how to address them * Age-appropriate responses to children's questions and concerns * Talking to children about long-term illness, suicide, family or community tragedy, and other special situations * What to do when children won't talk about loss, and when to seek professional help
"The wisdom, authenticity, and sheer presence of the author are evident from page one until the end of the beautifully written book. Terms like 'ground-breaking' and 'innovative' have been triviliazed by overuse. In this case they are deserved." --Stan Turecki, M.D., author of The Difficult Child

* Foreword by T. Berry Brazelton, M.D.
* Offers solid, constructive advice on talking with children of all ages, including adolescents

excellent resource.......2005-10-03
I just loved this book. Fantastic resource for how to talk with kids about loss. Any loss... divorce, death, loss of a pet or even loss of innocence. I recommend this book.
Required Reading For Every Adult.......2003-07-30
This book was a Godsend to me! My sister died suddenly in her sleep of a brain aneurysm, 9 days after giving birth to her second child. The oldest child, not quite 3 years old at the time, was the first to try to wake her that morning. How do you help a little child understand death and loss - what do you say? What should you not say? I needed specific answers and detailed explanations to guide my nephew through this horrible time for all of us. The author not only verified my instinct to be honest with my nephew, but also encouraged me to become a grief-model for him. She also explains how a child will "regrieve" a loss, such as the death of a parent, many times throughout their lives, and shows how crucial it is that a child learn to deal with and work through grief. Other losses that children experience, such as divorce, are also dealt with in a very comprehensive manner. Loss is a fact of life, and Ms. Trozzi and Ms. Massimini offer invaluable lessons to help you teach your child to deal with these inevitable losses. I keep several copies of this book on hand, because I give it to almost everyone I know. Don't wait till you need this book - read it now!!! I honestly think my nephew is dealing with his loss in a good way, and we've both learned to help each other. To the authors, I am forever in your debt.
Terrific Insight!.......2001-06-25
Thank you both - Maria and Kathy - for the wisdome, insight and well-defined exposures of difficult times during a loss of any kind. Whether it's a fierce injury or the untimely grief from loosing someone, children must hike through unexpected tragic events and your healthy outlook embraces this process. This informative book leads parents, or anyone, toward bonding with children may be silently suffering. These talented authors present certain steps - vividly and realistically - by restoring and achieving a nourishment of harmony after any adversity. During my years of researching head injuries, I have uncovered the fact that the second leading group subjected to a head injury are children. Since there is very little research in this area I am thrilled to locate this enormous wealth of help for them. I thoroughly recommend this book to any family struggling with grief or any painful experience. You two ladies have surfaced significantly - comfort and advice - by vocalizing the needs children feel, but may have been overlooked. Thank you for sharing all your research and knowledge.

A solid, well written book........2000-03-29
This book gave sound examples and concepts regarding the process of grieving. This book has helped me discuss and answer questions about death, to my 4yo daughter. With this books guidance, I know that dealing with the loss of her grandparents will be easier on both of us. If for no other reason than the level of understanding the grieving processes. Additionally, I have been able to use the concepts to help my child deal with a close family friend's distant move. A great "reference" book to have around.

A fascinating, engaging, candid, informative autobiography........2000-04-04
Effie Marquess Carmack (1885-1973) grew up in the tobacco-growing region of southern Kentucky known as the Black Patch. She married at an early age and, because of economic necessity and religious commitments, moved with her husband to Utah, back to Kentucky, then to Arizona, and finally to California. Along the way she became committed to preserving the rural, southern folkways she had experienced as a child. She became a folk poet and self-taught artist. In the 1940s she began writing her autobiography. Effie's story is a charming memoir of her spirited childhood on a poor tobacco farm. She describes a wide variety of folk practices from healing and crafts to children's games. A convert to the Mormon Church, her account of southern Mormon missions contributes to the little-known record of the Mormon church's attempts to establish a presence in the South. Out Of The Black Patch is a fascinating, engaging, candid, informative autobiography.
Book Description
Los Angeles came of age in the 1920s. The great boom of that decade gave shape to the L.A. of today: its vast suburban sprawl and reliance on the automobile, its prominence as a financial and industrial center, and the rise of Hollywood as the film capital of the world. This collection of original essays explores the making of the Los Angeles metropolis during this remarkable decade. The authors examine the city's racial, political, cultural, and industrial dynamics, making this volume an essential guide to understanding the rise of Los Angeles as one of the most important cities in the world.
These essays showcase the work of a new generation of scholars who are turning their attention to the history of the City of Angels to create a richer, more detailed picture of our urban past. The essays provide a fascinating look at life in the new suburbs, in the oil fields, in the movie studios, at church, and at the polling place as they reconceptualize the origins of contemporary urban problems and promise in Los Angeles and beyond. Adding to its interest, the volume is illustrated with period photography, much of which has not been published before.

Book Description
Once known as a great commercial port and pork-packing center, Cincinnati developed a diverse industrial economy in a bid to remain the West's Queen City. It is a community familiar with change as new transportation systems evolved, commercial activity shifted, and poor race relations periodically erupted in unrest. For over 200 years, however, enterprising citizens created a vibrant, if at times volatile, urban culture that frequently harkens back to its remarkable past in an effort to shape its future. Ý

Book Description
Bridge over troubled water? In the summer of 2000, 'The Bridge' - linking Southern Sweden and Denmark across the strait of Øresund - was opened after nearly a century of heated discussions and continuously changing plans.
In this book, the excitement surrounding the planning and construction of the bridge is analyzed, and the dreaming and scheming involved in the attempts to create a new transnational region across the water are examined.
The authors, an interdisciplinary team of Danish and Swedish scholars from the areas of Ethnology and Strategic Management Studies, use the Øresund regionalization processes as a case to discuss how transnational cultural, political and economic integration takes place in a world where the global and local as well as pasts and futures meet in novel ways.
