    Book Description

From the coauthor of the million-copy bestselling Medicine Cards comes this riveting account of initiation into ancient wisdom and the healing power of a Native American shaman. Of Choctaw descent, David Carson has absorbed and sought out Native American spiritual knowledge since growing up in Oklahoma Indian country. He distilled some of that knowledge in Medicine Cards, the hugely successful divination system based on traditional animal medicine that became a New Age bestseller in the 1990s. Now, in CROSSING INTO MEDICINE COUNTRY, he tells the story of his initiation as a conjure mana ceremonial healerwith the Choctaw medicine woman Mary Gardener. For three years, he studied the arts of power plants and medicine animals, how to manipulate the layers of energy surrounding human beings, and how to use sacred tobacco in ritual, curing, and divination. Through Marys teachings, often conveyed in folk tales of the primordial healer Yellow Tobacco Boy, and through his own, sometimes mind-bending experiences, he gives us a glimpse into an alternate reality, in which health and illness express the balance between man and nature, and Western notions of physics do not always apply. A fascinating personal narrative, here is a work rich in spirit and Native American lore that will appeal to anyone interested in alternative beliefs.

David Carson is of Choctaw descent and has studied Native American spirituality since growing up in Oklahoma Indian country, but his latest CROSSING INTO MEDICINE COUNTRY is something more than spiritual reflection. Here he pursues initiation as a ceremonial healer with Choctaw medicine woman Mary Gardener, studying plant and animal forces and human energy manipulation for three years. Health and spirituality blend in a survey of Native teachings and health insights which blends a memoir with a set of special reflections.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible Storytelling!.......2005-12-07

David, Thanks for sharing your gift of Storytelling!!

The entire book was incredibly mesmerizing -- couldn't put it down. The experiences Mr. Carson writes about with his teacher Mary Gardener are quite an adventure and very thought provoking. This book helped validate for me that there is so much more beyond this 3-D world we live in and to trust and accept what we see and feel in all of our experiences.

Mr. Carson speaks to bringing back our awareness to living in
harmony with the natural world and in so doing to see and feel the sacredness in all life. Maybe in reading this book more people will be able see the separateness we as a whole have created from nature and how being at One with all of life brings forth healing on all levels-- individually and for our dear Mother Earth.

This book really inspired me and touched my heart on so many levels. Great stuff!!

    5 out of 5 stars This is a keeper.......2005-10-25

I've had some extraordinary experiences reading this book. It feels like I'm there on the journey with him and some really amazing synchronicities have popped up again and again. Something like a holographic journey, this tale strikes a chord that goes straight to the heart of the reader. Great work, David Carson!

5 out of 5 stars Crossing Into Medicine Country.......2005-10-13

David Carson has done an excellent job of sharing the life of an apprentice, and the experiences that come with earning the title of "Shaman". This book is a treasure, a deep walk with Spirit. David shares his knowledge and experiences in such a way that I too felt I was on the journey. I highly recommend this book to the serious student, and to the curious beginner. A masterpiece. Couldn't put it down. It will hold a sacred place in my library.

To celebrate turning 50, Howard Frank Mosher took a trip through the North Country, the long northern border betwixt Canada and the United States. Old Elisha in Lubec, Maine, says "Us are the stubbornest people on the face of the earth, which we've had to be to survive at all." Journeying west through Michigan's Upper Peninsula, along the Manitoba and Saskatchewan borders and Montana's Breaks to Washington's Cascades, Mosher visited the self-sufficient bush pilots, game wardens, miners, and obstinate farmers who live off the harshly beautiful land. Mosher appreciates the rugged country, but he revels in the people.

    Book Description

Howard Frank Mosher embarked on a journey following America's northern border from coast to coast in search of the country's last unspoiled frontiers. What he discovered was a vast and sparsely settled territory largely ignored by the rest of the United States and Canada; a harsh and beautiful region populated by some of the continent's most independent men and women. Mosher brings the remote North Country vividly to life, and reflects on the powerful characters he has encountered in his own life and how this land has shaped his life and his books.

4 out of 5 stars Exploring the borderlands.......2000-08-17

In honor of his 50th birthday, Howard Mosher decided to take a solo journey exploring his home ground. His chosen turf is the "north country," the borderlands between the United States and Canada. Mosher traveled from Maine to Washington, meandering a few miles one either side of the border.

In this account of his odyssey, Mosher intersperses short anecdotes from his life as a resident and traveler in these areas, combined with mini-sketches of the people and places he encounters. Nobody and no place merits more than three pages of Mosher's spare prose. Mosher voices himself in the taciturn manner of the hardy border people. He strives for a rough-and-ready effect, implying that his itinerary was haphazard, and that his encounters were primarily ones of chance. I suspect that a lot more planning went into the trip than Mosher suggests.

My favorite chapter was the one on "fresh starts," in which Mosher profiled people who had left one life for another. For Mosher, traveling through places both familiar and completely new was its own form of fresh start.

5 out of 5 stars An example of literary art that engages the imagination!.......1999-04-27

Howard Frank Mosher is a gifted writer. His descriptions provoke the imagination into painting landscapes and portraits that the human eye ordinarily can't see. I found it literally impossible to put this book down, and I will definitely be reading the rest of Mosher's stories!

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful journey across America!.......1998-08-03

Howard Frank Mosher has crafted a warm, inviting story of his journey across the America via the backroads border of Canada. This book invokes the wanderlust... Read "Stranger in the Kingdom" and "Northern Borders" for superior fiction. Warm and intriguing.

    North Country by Howard Mosher.
    Review by Jules Older

Howard Frank Mosher celebrated his 50th birthday by taking a trip. With his wife's blessing, he loaded the car, got himself some letters of introduction, and started across country, alone.

As autumn was approaching, a southern route might have made the most sense. But not for Mosher. Since childhood, when he and his uncles spent their summers fishing the rivers of Quebec, he'd been fascinated by the north country. So deep was his borealphilia that he'd settled down and raised his family in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, just a few miles south of the Canadian border. And now, as a 50th birthday present to himself, he set off to explore that border from one end of the country to the other.

In late August, he headed east into Maine, where "farmhouses still sport brown wreaths on their doors, left over from last Christmas." He drove past "listing, bullet-pocked drive-in theater screens no Technicolor presentation or titillating coming attractions have flashed across for years." He wistfully noted "semiabandoned main streets running quickly into the interchangeable edge-of-town commercial strips that the boarded-up downtown stores have defected to."

From the coast of Maine, Mosher pointed the car west. He'd stop whenever he found a reason to. The reasons included flying a light smuggling run with a Quebec bush pilot and learning tricks for catching poachers from an Acadian game warden. They included gaining a new perspective on gambling from a Mohawk leader and hearing local history from old-timers on both sides of the Canadian border.

Mosher also got some unwanted lessons. He was stopped by the U.S. Air Force near a missile silo marked, "Use of Deadly Force Authorized." He was kept awake all night in a cheap motel by a pair of extremely loud newlyweds through one thin wall and an irate trucker banging on the other. And in the mountains of northern Idaho, he was stalked by a camouflaged survivalist armed with a hunting bow and deadly steel-tipped arrows.

Sometimes, Mosher would come across people or places that reminded him of events in his past. On those occasions, he'd slip back for a chapter or two, either to the dying Catskills town where he was raised or to Vermont's Northeast Kingdom where he wrote his five previous books and raised his own two children.

Not every writer would choose to record some of these events, no matter how forcefully they came to memory. One Mosher might have preferred to forget was the response his first book, Disappearances, drew from reviewers. The Montreal Gazette headline put it succinctly: "VERMONT WRITER SHOULD DISAPPEAR."

Over the years, Howard Frank Mosher seems to have hardened up. Two weeks before the trip, Harper's rejected one of his stories as "too linear and old-fashioned." Mosher "nailed the note to the side of my own weathered barn and blasted the living hell out of it with my shotgun..."

Though he shot the review and not the reviewer, it does make one consider one's critical words with care. Still, two things could make this very good book better. One would be a longer tarry with people and places of unusual interest. When you're traveling, it's often hard to slow down, but I'd have liked some longer rest and reflection stops along the way.

But the thing that's really missing is a bloody map. Even better, a bunch of bloody maps. Why Houghton Mifflin didn't see that a travel journal demands charts of the places the author takes readers is a mystery. They could have used the endpapers, could have inserted a center-spread-could, if they were really ambitious, augmented the journey map with detail maps at the beginning of each chapter.

Without maps, the reader faces the choice of staying in bed and trying to imagine exactly where Minnesota's Mesabi territory and Montana's Sweetgrass territory really lie, or trudging downstairs to get the atlas. A warm bed is a terrible thing to leave.

The way to best enjoy North Country is to read it alongside Howard Frank Mosher's last novel, Northern Borders. Together, they are fiction and faction, historical and contemporary, about one place and many. What they share is a celebration of the North Country and a fair sampling of the work of a leading northern writer.

As I read North Country and recalled Northern Borders, I was warmed by the fact that this chronicler of up-country tenacity and grit didn't take the advice of that Montreal reviewer. I'm thankful Howard Frank Mosher didn't disappear.

    Book Description

A highly personal memoir of exile and homeland, filled with the wit, melancholy and distinctive voice that have charmed readers of her fiction.

My Invented Country is a memoir about her native Chile that acknowledges the role of memory and nostalgia in shaping her life, her books, and her very connection to that most intimate place of origin. Allende revisits the imaginary Chile of her childhood and young adult years as well as the real one that exists today. She evokes the magnificent landscapes of the country, a charming, idiosyncratic Chilean people with a violent history and indomitable spirit, and the politics, religion, myth and magic of her homeland that she carries with her even today. The book curls itself around two life–changing moments. The assassination of her uncle, Salvador Allende Gossens, on September 11, 1973, sent her into exile and transformed her into a literary writer; and the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, on her newly adopted homeland. It speaks compellingly to immigrants, and to all of us, who try to retain a coherent inner life in a world full of contradictions.

5 out of 5 stars plain, honest style.......2006-06-13

She has a great way of making you feel like you are getting to know her personally; like you are having a conversation with someone that is going to become a your friend. "Paula" gave me the same impression. You can really identify with her emotions and see her perspective like she is some one you already know.

    5 out of 5 stars Poetic Journey.......2004-09-06

My Invented Country is Isabel Allende's best book yet. This amazing biography takes the reader on a poetic journey though Ms. Allende's young life. Her writing is stellar and poetic. This book is to be savored for its beauty of language. Writers dream of crafting sentences like these. Lovers of language will adore this book for its symmetry and grace. Readers of all ages will love it for its beautiful and absorbing story.

    4 out of 5 stars A Chilephile's delight.......2004-08-19

I guess one could describe this book as a beautiful woman's description of a beautiful country and its charming people. Let me get my prejudices out right up front: I have been fascinated by everything Chileno for over thirty years. The country has an amazing history, an incredibly varied topography (when God finished creating the world, he had a little bit of everything left over...so it He put it all in Chile) and wonderful people. Isabel Allende's nostalgic reminiscenses about her family and homeland are insightful, poignant and witty. The author commendably keeps politics to a minimum, but consequently barely touches on her country's troubled recent past and the healing process that is still a work in progress. Moreover, since Ms. Allende writes as an exile, one wonders whether her characterizations remain accurate in the aftermath of the rise and fall of Pinochet. Be that as it may, this is a delightful glimpse into the Chilean persona. This slim volume is not literature, but after reading Ms. Allende's paean to Chile, I was left with only two desires: to visit the country again as soon as possible and to meet the author. Fortunately the former is always an option.

    4 out of 5 stars almost Faulknerish.......2004-05-18

Allende's original work must be beautifully and well written in Spanish or else the translator did an excellent job. Seems to me that her writing is almost Faulkner-ish... a kind of classical ranting while accounting for family history and characters through personal experience and skewed perspectives... almost what is called stream of consciousness with many threads off tangent. Her style comes across more like she is thinking out loud instead of just telling a story. Sometimes it seems as if she is singing. Her words boast of a personality stronger than cultural traditions and expectations. Allende displays a personality ready to face the world, yet unwilling to forgo a staccatto past.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of Allende.......2004-05-14

This book tells us the story of the author's life in a short version. I personally liked the way she portraits Chile, past and present. But I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who has already read "Paula". In "Paula" she writes the story of her life while she is taking care of her daughter, who has a fatal disease, in "My invented country" she tells us the story of her life (again), because of the nostalgia she feels when her grandson asks her a question about being old, only in a shorter way and contributing with facets about her country. So when I read this book a lot of times I thought "I remember this" or "I knew this already". As another reviewer said, "she is loosing her touch". I hope she comes up with a brand new idea next time.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Historical Classic.......2004-10-29

This book is not a how-to on the modern methods of Point and Figure charts, as Tom Dorsey's book is. It is however an important historical classic, which makes you think about the psychology behind the buyers and sellers and gives some insights into trading the point and figure charts that the more modern books don't. Well worth the small price for the paperback if only for the sections on the fulcrum.

3 out of 5 stars the point&figure method of anticipating stock prices........2000-03-27

The content itself is good and useful in making some profits in stock or currency trading. However, there is one major problem about false signal (either buy or sell signal), about which the author never mentions and never gives any suggestions to solve this obstacle. In general, the book is helpful !

An interesting historical reference. You can see how far the methodhas come since 1933. But if you want to learn and use P&Fcharting, buy the Tom Dorsey book, "Point and Figure Charting: The Essential Application for Forecasting and Tracking Market Prices." excellent for timing your entry, setting stops and forming an exit strategy as well to control risk. 3 out of 5 stars The Point & Figure Method of Anticipating Stock Prices.......2000-03-25

Is a good primer for the novice technician to decide whether or not persue further study of Point and Figure Charts. The book can be read in an hour or so, however, I found his writing style somewhat tedious but clear. Another draw back is that the print is small and poor quality in places, probably because it's a reproduction of the original. Since the book was written there have been a few improvements to the construction, recognition of more patterns, and optimization of P&F charts. None of these improvements are earth-shaking as they are only refinements that have evolved in the changing markets.

For advanced study, John J. Murphy's comprehensive book, "Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets," goes well into detail of the construction of P&F charts, many pattern examples, and suggestions how to optimize them. Although Murphy wrote the book around the futures markets, it applies to stock equites, mutual funds, options, and indices as well.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars Adorable handknits.......2007-07-21

This sweet book delighted me at first glance in December 2005, so I put it on my "Santa list." The next day I went back to the shop and bought it for myself -- Santa's usually good to me but why take chances? I'm cautious about books featuring a specific brand of yarn but Rowan's so luscious and children's knits use smaller amounts, so it seemed worth using the real thing.

I chose the Wildflower Sweater for my 2006 Knitting Olympics entry and enjoyed every second of the project. Nine months later I had the pleasure of seeing my granddaughter dig deep to find her pretty "flower jersey" and pull it on over her pajamas on a cool Australian autumn morning. Priceless!

I'd happily knit anything in this book -- the plump, abstract little animals, the gorgeous blankets, the hats and bags, dresses and pullovers. My only reservation is the crocheted picot edgings, which are perfect finishing touches but challenging for me since the crochet hook is not my friend. It's a skill worth cultivating, however, and this book is great motivation. I found all the instructions clear and fault-free.

Lucinda Guy's inspired designs are a pleasure for the knitter and a treat for the lucky little recipient.

5 out of 5 stars Great designs for boys and girls.......2007-06-30

Every time I buy or browse a knitting pattern book for children I complaint on how uninteresting looking are boy-geared pattern compared to girl's. This is nothing I can say about Ms. Guy's "Design for Kids" pattern collection.

One of the joys about this book is that boys patterns are fun and exciting to knit. Also, I found very useful that designs are classified by season, using a different yarn for each one: mohair for winter; a wool cotton mix for spring; cotton for summer and wool for fall. You may notice that the colour palette is somewhat limited, but this does not mean is boring at all. For every season there's a beautiful blanket to knit; lovely accesories: hats, scarves and bags; and toys. Another thing I liked, is that each piece of the patterns for toys are shown as they are in real life, not having to picture them in your mind (I'm very bad at that).

Finally the cute pictures by Francois Hall add a charming note to the book, making it a little more special.

                4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Designs!.......2007-06-29

I have been smitten with Lucinda Guy's designs since looking through her book, "And To Bed..." I picked up this book because I enjoy quick projects like stuffed animals, and just finished the stuffed dog. This is no book for beginners, as I believe all of the designs require the use of intarsia. I would also recommend enlarging the charts before sitting down to work, because they are TINY! My only disappointment was the emphasis on working with the charts. Charts are not my strong point to begin with, and these are really just colored squares, with no indication of what methods to use for increasing and decreasing. Otherwise, this is a great book with whimsical designs and pictures.

4 out of 5 stars Adorable kids patterns.......2007-04-01

Great book for color knitting. Lots of intarsia and detail. Not a great book for beginners but lovely projects that are special for kids and babies. The striped boys sweaters with trucks on them are the cutest projects for boys I have ever seen. Not too many small projects if you are looking for small items for leftover yarn.

4 out of 5 stars YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!.......2007-02-08

Unlike so many other knitting books for babies and kids, this has creative, attractive patterns. No ugly pastels, no useless cutsie booties, no hideous hats, nothing that will embarrass the poor child in 15 years. None of that garbage. I make the stuffed toys and they are universally a hit. Buy this and And So To Bed. You will wear them out with use.

                    Book Description

A guide for the parents of the dazed and confused generation identified in the runaway bestseller Quarterlife Crisis.

Today's twenty-somethings are facing an unprecedented cultural shift in which they're feeling lost, uncertain about the future, and/or in crisis. What used to be the traditional markers of adulthood, from getting married and starting a family to earning a living, are increasingly being delayed-and it's causing as much confusion for parents as for their adult children. Quarterlife Crisis identified the difficulties twentysomethings are facing. But what about their parents? Guiding your twenty-something kid requires a whole new set of parenting skills. Here, finally, is a book to help parents navigate this tumultuous period in their adult children's lives.

Is it OK to let your kid move back in with you because he can't seem to commit to any one career-and therefore has no paycheck coming in? What do you do when your child calls you and says that her rent is due and she needs some quick cash? Just how involved should parents be in their adult children's lives? And what do twenty-somethings actually want and need from their parents? While parents are facing an urgent need for answers, few experts are talking about the subject, and there is little conventional wisdom to draw from. In this invaluable book, Gordon and Shaffer identify the complex issues these parents are facing and offer wise and effective strategies for successfully parenting a twenty-something "kid."

                    4 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2007-08-04

A good book to read to understand more of what your twentysomething children are going through.

                    5 out of 5 stars So Valuable!!!!!!.......2005-07-19

after reading Mom, Can I Move Back In.. I realized that I wasn't alone sending my son care packages at 26 years old. I'm not the only mother who speaks to her son and daughter more than once a day. It is helpful to understand my family from a broader perspective. The book helps me too understand how we got here and where we need to go. The characteristics of adulthood are INVALUABLE. I am grateful that someone took the time to look at twentysomethings and their parents so that I can have a guide now that my children are half kids and half adults.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Resource!.......2004-06-26

As a parent of an adult child I found this book to be an outstanding resource for families dealing with the realities of changing times. The concept of twentysomethings as ADULTescents is well defined and clearly developed by the authors. Using a combination of anecdotes, interviews with focus groups, and summaries of research, the book provides background information and practical strategies for parents facing the challenges of interacting with twentysomethings in a positive and constructive way. As an educator, I also appreciated the attention to the social issues and changing expectations facing young adults, particularly those related to gender roles.

5 out of 5 stars This book is invaluable!.......2004-05-17

If you have kids in their 20's or even older this book will both educate and absorb you totally. For any parent who finds themselves much more involved in their adult child's daily life than they could ever imagine, this book tells you that you're not alone! The numerous anecdotes sound like the authors must have eavesdropped at my home for the past few years. The book entertains and at the same time feels like it is well researhed and really thoughtful. Baby boomer parents of "adult" children should run to buy it.

                      Book Description

Remarkable scientific research, mapping the human genome, reveals how similar we all are to each other. Only a tiny fraction of difference separates us one from another.

Each of us says "Hello" to our individual experience here on earth, and each of us will ultimately and assuredly say "Goodbye." Between those landmark events in our lives, there are all kinds and types of "Hellos" and "Goodbyes," some happy; some sad; some funny-and all part of the amazing school called life.

This book awakens us to both the glitter, and sometimes the gloom, that life presents on an almost daily basis. It awakens a realization that life is truly important and meaningful, and that each day is a gift to be opened and treasured.

                            Book Description

This study gives an introduction into cross-border interaction and third cultures in the London reinsurance market. Due to its high share of international business, the London reinsurance market represents a field which invites a study of the legal behaviour of the global players within one specific field of business. Reinsurance so far has not conducted legal battles in public - if there were legal battles at all. First of all, disputing parties would negotiate. Dispute remained in the privacy of arbitration. Increasingly the Commercial Court in London has taken an important role in resolving those disputes put to it by UK and non UK resident parties. The book attempts to offer an explanation of the phenomenon by giving an insight into the development of dispute behaviour in the London reinsurance market during the last 10 to 15 years.
