    Book Description

By his own admission, small-town doctor Robert Douglas Spencer performed at least 100,000 illegal abortions in the era before Roe v. Wade. Although threatened with blackmail and arrest, he continued his abortion practice, committed to the principle of choice. Was he the "King of the Abortionists," as his detractors called him, or the "Angel of Ashland"?

5 out of 5 stars surprising compassion in coal country.......2002-10-02

As a resident of conservative , sleepy Schuylkill County, I was amazed at the foresight and forward thinkingness of this physician. In a county of staunch Catholics, it surprised me that this happened anywhere during those turbulent times , much less here. Mr. Genovese presents this biography in a very straight forward manor that leaves the reader to make up their own mind about this controversial man and issue. As someone who generally does not read biographies, i was hooked from page one. An easy and educational read. Thought provoking

5 out of 5 stars Controversial but an enlightening and entertaining read........2001-05-18

There is no doubt about it; Abortion is a difficult issue for a lot of people. On one hand you have the desire for justice of equal choice by all women, on the other hand you have a great desire to respect and preserve life. I am no different in that it is an issue that I've struggled with at both extremes (Pro and Con) for most of my life. I've concluded that there is no definitive answer that all can agree with. All we can do is to work at respecting life from all views and perspectives. This is why I've read this biography with a very open mind and frankly I'm glad I did!

Having grown up near Ashland, PA I had an immediate interest to read a work by a local author about a local legend. I had heard of Dr. Spencer in hushed conversations of appalling outrage and contempt and I have also in conversations of heroic praise. I wanted to find out more about this "Angel" who dared take a stand and help women through a very difficult time. Meticulously researched and expertly told it is a stroke of luck to come across this text and hold it in my collection. Of all the biographies I have read, this work is one of the best. Genovese's use of descriptive prose and convincing speculation of events he could only imagine occurred is noteworthy of praise and attention. He portrays Dr. Spencer honestly and "re-members" him for the reader in such a way you feel like you know the doctor personally.

This work is for you if you have an interest in the stories and legends of the Pennsylvania "Coal Region". This work is NOT for you if you seek to increase controversy with contempt or without an open mind. Read it as a story of a man who dared make a difference and succeeded with great compassion and non-judgmental understanding at a time where a woman's only choice was a wire hanger and certain death.

"Perfect for all of us who can never get enough time with good books. It not only urges us to indulge deeply and often, it shows us how."-Myra Hart, professor, Harvard Business School

"A worthy addition to even the most well-stocked personal library."-Ross King, author of Michelangelo & The Pope's Ceiling

Do not set out to live a well-read life but rather your well-read life. No one can be well-read using someone else's reading list. Unless a book is good for you, you won't connect with it and gain from it. Just as no one can tell you how to lead your life, no one can tell you what to read for your life.

How do readers find more time to read? In The Little Guide to Your Well-Read Life, Steve Leveen offers both inspiration and practical advice for bibliophiles on how to get more books in their life and more life from their books.

His recommendations are disarmingly refreshing, as when he advises when not to read a book and why not to feel guilty if you missed reading all those classics in school. He helps readers reorganize their bookshelves into a Library of Candidates that they actively build and a Living Library of books read with enthusiasm, and he emphasizes the value of creating a Bookography, or annotated list of your reading life. Separate chapters are devoted to the power of audio books and the merits of reading groups.

The author himself admits he came "late to the bookshelf," making this charming little guide all the more convincing.

4 out of 5 stars Read to enhance your life!.......2007-09-17

I felt this book was worth the investment of time (it's short and can be read quickly) and money (I think it's a good reference book to have). That being said I think it's wise to heed Mr. Leveen's advice and write in your books, especially this one. That way you can quickly look back at this book as a reference and find the key points that you thought were of particular interest.

I picked up some helpful hints on how to pick good books for me. I also had a few of my habits reinforced by Mr. Leveen's opinion. One prime example of this was his suggestion that if a book hasn't grabbed your attention by page 50 move on to the next book. There are so many good books that it would be a shame to drudge through a book that isn't enjoyable to you. I have always practiced this habit but often times felt a little guilty about not plowing through to the end. Below are a few of the key takeaways I got...

      * The more you read the more you realize how little you know! (Don't let this discourage you from reading)
      * The library is a fueling station for the mind.
      * The time you spend reading is an investment. Establish a process to pick good books for you. This book gives advice on establishing a process.
      * Write in books. (I picked up this habit from my grandfather and I agree with the author that it helps solidify your thoughts about a book, especially non-fiction)
      * The idea that audio books can be a great addition to your reading investment. I travel often by car for hours at a time and hadn't really considered audio books before. I will from now on.

5 out of 5 stars great book, very helpful ideas.......2007-03-10

I loved the book - found it via David Allen ("Getting Things Done" fame). Helpful in that it gave me permission to buy, but not immediately read books, to read parts of books, and how to get more out of books. Thanks Steve!

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Insights for Book Lovers & Readers!!.......2006-10-30

This is a book written by a book lover for other book lovers. Short, sweet and packed with practical advice on how to get more books in your life. Author Steve Leveen reestablishes the prominence that reading and books can and should have in our lives. The book is worthwhile on many levels, including its kernels of insight, including the 50-page rule; if after 50 pages you're still just not "into" a book, you should give yourself permission to abort the reading process.

Leveen is also a fan of people starting their own book collections and lists of books that they want to acquire and read. He also presents a cogent defense of audio books as warranting legitimacy and being nothing for other people to look down their noses upon.

I found myself marking about every other page for some flash of insight or reference to another book that I wanted to pursue. If you enjoy books or reading, you will find this a delicious treat!

5 out of 5 stars Finding Time and Space to Read More Books!.......2006-04-03

I just finished reading The Little Guide to Your Well-Read Life, by Steve Leveen. It is indeed a little guide - I read it in about 2 1/2 hours, while taking extensive notes. But I think it's very high yield, and I recommend it to you if you would like to read more, or would like to get more out of what you do read. I think that it's worth the cover price for the quotes about books alone. For example:

"Never force yourself to read a book that you do not enjoy. There are so many good books in the world that it is foolish to waste time on one that not give you pleasure". -- Atwood H. Townsend.

"A library is a fueling station for your mind." -- Steve Leveen

"I think it's an essential need of the human being to hear another human being tell them a story...it makes us feel there's somebody else here with us." -- George Guidall

Mr. Leveen is a strong believer in keeping lists of books that you have read (your Bookography), want to read (your List of Candidates) and own but haven't yet read (your Library of Candidates). I found this concept highly validating, as I have for the past couple of years maintained my lists of Read and Liked, Want to Read, and Have But Haven't Read. I break mine down further by children's books vs. adult books. It's the same idea, though Steve Leveen has cooler names for his lists than I do. This book encouraged me to be even more detailed with my own lists, and also gave me some ideas for new lists. I'm currently brainstorming on "books that I expect to re-read regularly for the rest of my life."

The The Little Guide to Your Well-Read Life also includes discussion about how to process and remember more of what you read, the benefits of audiobooks, the pros and cons of bookclubs, and whether or not it's a good idea to write notes directly in the book that you're reading. All of these discussions come back again and again to two themes that are clearly important to the author. First, be active about what you choose to read, rather than haphazard, making the best choices that you can. Second, accept the fact that the list of best books to read for you will be unique, tied in to your own interests and experiences and attributes.

I personally would have liked to see the book talk more about raising children who love books, rather than focusing purely on adults, but I know that I'm just bringing my own biases to the table. I still enjoyed the book a lot, intend to implement some ideas from it myself, and recommend it to you.

This book review was originally published on my blog, Jen Robinson's Book Page, on January 14, 2006.

2 out of 5 stars Not a lot of Substance.......2006-03-06

Leveen's book is much like the products he is famous for: slight, expensive, and possibly overblown.

Which isn't to say there aren't kernels of knowledge one can derive from the book. Unlike many Levenger products, the book is about achieving a deeper relationship with reading and not about looking good while doing it.

To achieve a well-read life, Leveen suggests that you 1) make a list of books you want to read and keep them in categories (Leveen is fairly insistent that you buy the books you want to read - he obviously hasn't considered how expensive that might be); 2) practice the SQ3R method (survey, question, read, recite, review) and preferably write in your books; consider audio books as an addition to, but not replacement of, "reading"; join a reading group.

And that's the book in a nutshell. There are no a-ha moments unless you're one of those people who doesn't believe in audiobooks, and shame on you if you are. There is little here that anyone who has ever asked him or herself the question "how can I read more?" hasn't already considered.

In fact, the book made me a little uneasy for two reasons. First, Leveen's overwhelming need to "possess" books he has or might want to read. There is little discussion of public libraries and the value they provide to those who cannot afford personal libraries. Second, Leveen's insistence that writing in one's books is important. Yes, such an activity can improve one's understanding of the book, but frequently one can't write in a book (library) or would prefer not to (expensive/valuable, such as a first edition). Writing marginalia is often not nearly as effective as taking real notes.

5 out of 5 stars THE most AMAZING book EVER written!!!.......2007-06-28

This is the sweetest book I've read, recounting the adventures of Bevie's human "pack" and their newest animal companion, a four-month-old wolf, and how he bonds with her husband and children, as well as their cat, 200-pound Great Danes, and chimpanzees, racoons, skunks, and other unusual animals. It's entertaining, but sweet and sad, recounting the losses that Chakka and his pack had.

5 out of 5 stars A verry good book which tells a lot about a wolf as a pet.......1999-02-23

When I started to read the book, I knew little about wolves. This book showed that wolves are not those bad animals at all. I've learned a lot about the character of wolves by this book. The book is verry nice to read

5 out of 5 stars Touching, shows wolves are more than some people think.......1999-02-10

This is one of my FAVORITE books! It was very touching. This book shows that wolves aren't blood thirsty monsters, but are just as caring as compassionate as humans can be. Through the example of Chakka, we can see how much wolves care for their "pack", their intelligence, loyalty, and beauty. After reading this book I hope to read Chakka: My Wolf Child also.

I love Hostas, and I love this CD-ROM. There are so many hostas out there and this CD talks about just some of them. It is really neat to see photos and videos where Allan Armitage tells you stories about some of the hostas he's grown over the years. And if you didn't know, Allan Armitage is a Hosta-Nut!

                          I loved the videos!

Contrary to what some of the other reviewers have written, I did not find this book to be negative at all. For example, one reviewer said, "...the writer suggests that most marriages end in divorce so fathers should bond with the child while they can!"

What the writer actually does is mentions the well-known statistic that half of all marriages end in divorce. He then suggests ways for men to improve their relationships with their wives and ways for them to strengthen their families! This is not a negative book at all. This is an honest look at fatherhood with helpful advice and important information. My husband got a lot out of this book and I recommend it for any fathers-to-be.

4 out of 5 stars Read Nearly Cover-to-Cover in One Sitting.......2005-09-11

While recently visiting a first-time-pregnant friend, I picked up this book and couldn't put it down. And now that I'm expecting, it's the first book I thought of to give to my fiance. The advice is practical, the insights honest, and, while the same can hardly be said for most books I've seen that are aimed at MOTHERS-to-be, it never felt judgemental. Feelings are validated, multiple viewpoints are covered, and the author doesn't compell you to buy out a furniture and/or toy store to feel that you will be a successful parent. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars My husband loved this book.......2005-04-15

I had to write this review as I saw this was being totaly badmouthed by other wives. The book is honest, to the point and easy to understand. My husband does not want to hear all the medical terms but he wanted to know what was normal for him and I to be going through. I agreed with most of his comments and advise.
As far as the negative comment from other reviewers about the dad going home to rest, it is just a suggestion, and not always a bad one. These books open the dialog for the mom and dad to discuss how they want to handel it. I did not feel like the author was insensitive at all. This really helped my husband and it was a quick painless read for him and made him more involved in the process.

1 out of 5 stars Fathers should go home to sleep while mom stays in hospital?.......2004-07-23

I just glanced through this book last night, and I have to agree with the other review. I couldn't BELIEVE how it told a new father to ditch his wife in the hospital and go home and get a good nights sleep! How much sleep do you think your wife has gotten since getting pregnant between morning sickness and getting up to pee every two hours?!? And then to go through hours of labor, just to have you leave and go home to sleep at the end of it, leaving her to take care of a newborn by herself? Sure there's nurses, but they wake you up to check your vitals every few hours, and even if a nursery does keep the baby overnight, they will wake you up to breastfeed! And then your wife has months to go with no sleep again! And the husband is the one who gets to go home that night and get a good nights sleep? That statement is going to get a lot of husbands/new dads in a LOT of trouble, IF they are dumb enough to listen to it. There is no way my husband will be leaving me in the hospital to go home and sleep. Course I will be having a c-section so I will need him there. My last c-section the nurses chose to watch TV and socialize than take care of me and help me to the bathroom. So I doubt I will be passing this book along to my husband to read. I would suggest She's having a Baby- And I'm Having a Breakdown, or What to Expect when Your Wife is Expanding. This book also is not sorted into months of pregnancy or trimesters even, but one chapter is dedicated to sex during pregnancy! I would steer away from this one.

                            Book Description

                            Hello there,

Micah here. I’m supposed to say something that gives you an idea of what this book is about and try to convince you to buy it. So let’s start with a simple statement, shall we?

This book is filled with comedy, drama, action, suspense, and sheep.

                            No, really…it is.

But, more than that, this book is about cutting the crap and getting to the point. So, why not start at the description?

This is a book about an artist struggling to come to grips with adulthood, marriage, divorce, family, friends, love, mental illness, and society in general. In short; life. I know, it sounds depressing. But really, it’s filled with humor as well. I mean, how many biographies involve spontaneous indoor rain? Airborne yogurt? Random public nudity? Oh, yes, and a complete discussion on the proper use of profanity?

These pages detail the story of my journey through life. Oft-times a bumpy and scary ride; but filled with discoveries great and small. Everything in here is true, as unbelievable as some of it might seem.

So why don’t you crack the book open and have a closer look?

                            -Micah P.
