A Must for Fans of Mountain Photography.......2007-06-06

This is a thoroughly beautiful book, and it's unfortunate that it has gone out of print. One expects John Fielder's landscapes to be spectacular, and they are. I especially enjoyed seeing his takes on scenes that I was familiar with and had photographed myself. The surprise is the turn-of-the-century photos by Enos Mills, who almost single-handedly got the park established, and achieved wonderful results with his primitive camera (shown in one picture). Mills' writings are also fascinating, even more so than T.J. Barron's rather new-age musings. Well worth searching out, if you love Rocky Mountain National Park, or mountain photography in general.

This is an extensive, advanced study of the plants found in Rocky Mountain National Park. It includes an identification key, color photos of specimens, line sketches of plant anatomy, descriptions understandable both by laymen and botanists, and essays on the severe environment, vegetation zones and plant succession. Gives plant classifications by family and latin names, which are necessary for the serious student and often lacking in plant guides.

This unique and authoritative study of the investment management business focuses on the use of capital requirements for investment managers as a means of investor protection. Commissioned by the Investment Management Regulatory Organization and drawing on extensive discussions with investment managers themselves, it provides an account of this burgeoning sector that is both comprehensive in its coverage and penetrating in its analysis. The authors review the way in which the investment management business is organized and its inherent risks; they examine the causes and incidence of market failures as well as the dangers to investors through mismanagement and malpractice. The book includes an extensive treatment of fraud, with a full listing of fraud cases in the UK since the early 1970s. The report concludes with a summary of the evidence on the nature and scale of the risks faced by investors and recommendations for appropriate forms of protection; and, on the basis of existing regulatory structures in the UK and USA, sets out a proposed structure in accordance with the thrust of the authors' analysis. A Look at Design Philosophy.......2006-08-30

This is not a book of track plans nor is it a book that spends much time on how to lay track. Instead, it attempts to teach broad design considerations to make a model railroad operate better and seem more realistic. It considers such matters as modeling an imaginary line as opposed to one from the real world. It talks about making scenes plausible in their context; this is not always the same as real. It considers how to pick rolling stock and how to choose graphic and model elements to make the miniature model world more like the real one. Most important, though, it tries to teach how to make a layout reliable.

None of these objectives is specifically accomplished but the book goes a long way in teaching things to consider. It is a book about design philosophy as opposed to design criteria. It is worth the time.

At least 30,000 people kill themselves in the United States alone, most leaving behind shocked siblings. Yet, too often, the grief and bewilderment of surviving siblings is simply ignored, leaving the bereaved siblings feeling even more abandoned. The accounts of siblings' experiences in this book are based on interviews with more than thirty people from all over the United States, as well as the author's own experience of losing a sister to suicide. Just as sibling relationships are varied and complex, so the feelings and experiences of sibling suicide survivors run a long and complex gamut from deep grief, to anger, to guilt, to relief. Often these feelings are intermixed. The survivors are often bewildered by the complexity of their feelings, including reactions that may seem shameful or inappropriate. These moving accounts will help other sibling survivors of sibling suicide see that they are not alone. No matter what their feeilngs and reactions are, there are others who have shared them.

Swan-Miller writes sensitively and knowledgeably about the impact of the suicide of a family member on the surviving sibling(s). Using her personal experience as a starting off point, she explores a variety of sibling relationships and feelings about the suicide of a brother or sister. Through interviews with sibling survivors she exposes the wide variety of emotions that these survivors go through and the unique aspects of their experiences. Straight-forward prose, well organized chapters and an underpinning of psychological expertise help the reader understand and digest this difficult topic. Clearly there is a need for greater support and understanding of sibling relationships within the family dynamic- especially when there is a suicide. Though I think that a bibliography/list of resources for survivors would have been a useful inclusion, this book is an excellent resource for lay and professional alike.

An excellent look at a unique designer........1998-10-23

This is a well-written and beautifully produced book. It is a combination biography/retrospective on the work of Claire McCardell, a fashion designer popular in the 1940s and 1950s. She is virtually forgotten today, which is a shame--her work was unique and truly American. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in fashion design.
