The Truth Can Set You Free.......2002-05-10
Herb Moore left the "Island" the day I arrived from the balmy Bronx. The nexy day Sgt. Egge picked up Platoon 375. We outposted on 5 December 63. There are some dates you will never forget!! Moore captures Sgt. Egge magnificently. He is a man who is burnt not in my mind but in my soul. Fear and pain must be over come. I did not grasp this until two + years later when I went to Viet Nam, Republic of. Never saw Egge again. Strange, it is close to 40 years and I still hear the cadence call.
Herb you done good and got it like none before you.
Rows of Corn - USMC Boot Camp Book with True Grit!.......2001-06-06
Herb L. Moore, an enlisted Marine from South Carolina who served during the Vietnam era, gives an excellent account of his own USMC boot camp experiences at Parris Island.
While this book does not have quite the commercial "spit shine" of other books that address boot camp, I actually appreciated it more than other related books due to the fact that the author recounts recruit training experiences with a bit more honest "true grit" than other accounts. His description is offered as seen through the eyes of a recruit versus the eyes of a detached author as with so many other military books written today.
In addition to a very good account of daily boot camp life, Herb Moore also provides near the conclusion of his book a provoking discussion on why tough training is needed in order to have Marine's ready to handle combat experience. His words ring with an air of wisdom and truth that, again, you won't find as frankly discussed in many other books.
Herb Moore is to be highly commended for authoring this book. If you are looking for a philosophical and detailed explanation of the Corps place in society, I would recommend Thomas Rick's "Making the Corps", and if you are looking for a book that chronicles the training regimen of USMC boot camp then I would recommend Daniel Da Cruz's "Boot", but if you are looking for an engaging and honest account of what boot camp life is like when viewed through the eyes of a recruit than I would strongly recommend grabbing "Rows of Corn" first!
Semper Fi, John G. Kennedy (USMC 1996 - 1999)
Rows of Corn - The Real Story.......2001-04-24
I went through basic training at Parris Island the same year as the author. I found this book to be the only accurate description of what happened in Marine Corps boot camp. The descriptions of the DI's were right on target. The relentless stress is written between the words so accurately I felt like I was back in 1963. I wonder why no one has made a movie on this book. A great read of a real life experience!!
Rows of Corn hit every angle.......2001-04-24
I went through Parris Island during the same year as the author. I have read many books about Parris Island and recruit training, but nothing came close to this one is describing the boot camp experience of the 60's. The DI's were exactly as Moore described them, I saw members of my platoon go through the same ordeals, and I had the same pride at graduation. Boy, this is some book. I wonder why no one has made a movie about this story. Well done.
I was a Marine recuirt.......1999-11-18
I was also a Marine Drill Instructor and I find that this book tells it like it is this book is in detail and as I read the book I found myself thinking that I was back on the drill feild------ I felt a deep feeling of pride, damm I miss the Marine Corps. I recommend it to all Marines, I have tried to present all my recurits of Plt 145 with a copy,-, a "Well Done" Pvt. Moore

Looking for an alternative to our pill popping culture ?.......2007-08-30
So you're looking for an alternative to pill popping ? Now that's a change! I'm in awe of people who think it it's ok to take a pill to prevent something that they think is going to happen - for example, a friend mentioned that she needs to take a strong pain pill (I won't mention the name here) because she "may" get back pain. That's not what pills were made for. If you worry about the side effects of even the mildest drugs, then this book is for you. I hate taking any kind of medication, and am always on the lookout for alternatives to medication. Give me an herb or a fruit, or vegetable, and tell me to take that for a medical problem, and I'll happily give it a try!
I like this book because it's filled with information on various natural remedies. There's a reason God created these herbs and plants - for us or the animals to use them to cure ourselves. Sure, we can't cure everything, but this book certainly shows you how to "cure" or control many, many problems. I highly recommend it!
Another one I love is "Back to Eden" by Jethro Kloss.
Pocket herb guide.......2007-07-06
One of the best guides i have seen, covering 180 herbs and a reference on a lot of common ailments.
Best Paperback Book on Herbal Healing.......2006-10-21
I found Earl Mindell's 'Vitamin Bible',at the Paperback Corner,in Princeton,Illinois. And i found the 'Green Pharmacy',at the Dollar-Store,for only a buck.I was amazed at how much information that small paperback had to offer, for just a buck.Dr.James Duke gives excellent scientific stats and uses of various herbs. He reveals the full skinny on every herb of value and interest, for everyone's prime health-care and preventive care.He also has a similar book called,'Renewel',that i would also recommend.I would have gladly paid the full-price for his book. This guide sadly got bumped to the discount shack. Yet,the mall-herd want their fast-food literature, that offers mostly 'empty ideas',and no food for thought.State governmernts could buy-up the copies,at discount bulk-rates,and hand-out the herbal books to all medi-care users.Have them take a 100 question multiple-choice test, over what they read. The ones who scored a 100 ,could collect their aid-money.The ones who did not pass ,were allowed the re-take until they passed with a perfect score. It would relieve alot of the health-care cost, that has grown so prohibitive ,for most local and state relief public aid offices. But,it seems business-as-usual from the pharmco-companies,who charge outragous sums for their re-formulated herbal product.Consumers Beware!
A great starter text and layman's index.......2006-07-14
The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook is an informative and concise resource on the medicinal value of herbs written to the layman yet of value to the practitioner. Dr. Duke's no-nonsense approach to demonstrating the therapeutic value to useful herbal preparations as well as potential adverse reactions provides the reader with a useful index of commonly used herbs. This book is an easy read, and it is written in a straight-forward manner that makes it easily understood by those new to the ageless use of plants in our environment to ease and cure disease.
DUKE'S BEST EFFORT BELONGS ON EVERY BOOKSHELF.......2005-08-04
I have read all of James Duke's books and this one is the best and most essential. Every common medicinal herb is described and rated for its value medicinally and for safety in a uniform and formulamatic way in alphabetic order. This makes this book both concise and incredibly valuable for quick reference. No matter how many times I have read this book I find myself going to it daily for quick information and in this regard it has no equal. The only shortcoming is really by design it excludes "non-herbal" though related information. For instance, you may find information on bromelain, but no reference to using it with quercetin since quercetin is a flavonoid. Duke's newer book on "anti-aging" does take this into account, but it is not neatly or usefully organized for quick reference. Lastly, many books of this type are quite expensive, "The Green Pharmacy" is the exception with new copies available for around $10. and used for around $6.

The simple path to great dinner party memories.......2004-07-17
I love this cookbook and have used it for years to throw small themed dinner parties. The recipes are all simple, healthy and quick, and there'll be no shortage of food with the robust menus it provides. The decorating ideas are inexpensive, easily obtainable, and fun, and each theme even comes with a short list of mood music recommendations to create a completely themed atmosphere. Perfection!
The book breaks down step-by-step how to put each themed party together, so that it has two added benefits: One, each theme's menu can be easily broken down and assigned to different guests for "pot luck" parties (for example, one person brings the bread, the other brings the theme dessert, another brings a CD, etc.) Two, it has such a wide variety of ideas, and the ideas are so flexible, that there's plenty of room to be creative. If you don't like the theme's dessert, you can find another recipe on the Internet easily and the "spirit" of the idea is kept intact.
User-friendly, thorough and flexible, this is the only resource for themed dinner parties I'll ever anticipate needing. Whether you're having 3 or 30 people over, dinner parties never need be boring or stuffy again - the ideas in this book are sure to delight and impress your guests and make your life a LOT easier.
Perfect addition to any cookbook collection.......2003-09-26
Karen Brown's book offers a terrific format for throwing parties. The recipes are easy to follow and delicious. I like the fact that the ingredients are common so you aren't searching various specialty stores to complete the ingredient list. The themes are spread out throughout the year so it's easy to plan a party at the drop of a hat. Not only does this book have lots of recipes, it goes into everything from suggested invitations, appropriate music and decorating ideas. My only complaint is no pictures. I admit I'm a fan of the glossy books and like to see the author's interpretation of what was said versus my ideas. However, the book is so well done that I think you will refer to it over and over like I have.
Easy And Delicious Ideas For Your Own Perfect Dinner Party!.......2002-10-29
Karen Brown's third cookbook is a winner, with 21 themed and ethnic special events, from Superbowl Parties, Romance Dinners for Two, Academy Award Dinners, Backyard Barbecues to Italian Feats and New Orleans-style cuisine.
The recipes are simple for the most part, and usually feature easily obtainable ingredients. Each recipe features numbered steps which are not difficult for the cook with even average cooking skills.
Some of the delectable recipes include Pesto Cheesecake, Butternut Squash Soup, Potato and Vegetable Salad, Spareribs, Watermelon Sorbet, Caramel Brownies and the easiest Chocolate Truffle recipe I've ever seen!
Along with recipes, the author gives clever ideas for invitations, place settings, centerpieces and other decorating ideas, as well as recommended beverages and even the sort of music that would work best with your own special bash.
This light-hearted, yet elegant cookbook is highly recommended, and the glossy stain-resistant cover of this over-sized softbound book is likewise appreciated, as one of the little details that will having you "wow" lucky guests with your own special events.
Straightforward, Easy & Delicious.......2001-11-04
I normally wouldn't have the time or really care to right a review but I felt I owed it to the author. I am an Executive Chef and often do private dinner parties. Most cookbooks I am ususally satisfied with 25% of the recipes but I have tried about half so far and every single one is fabulous! I like that they are simple and give great decor ideas as well. I only wish there were more menus to choose from. Just my two-cents.
Wonderful book! Five-star rating!.......1999-07-10
Had everything I needed with step-by-step guide--menus with recipes, inexpensive centerpiece tips and decorating ideas, even background music selections! I've tried two of the dinners so far: Southwest theme with fish and mango salsa with a quick black bean and corn salad, and the roast pork loin with cherry relish and praline cheesecake menu, and am going to try more. Highly recommended!

Read This Book and Make Values Stick!.......2000-06-16
The Values Book is an excellent source of information and activities to encourage values in your child. The authors cite changes in modern culture and use fun, creative methods to instill traditional values. Each chapter begins with a familiar rhyme recognizing a particular value. The authors then define the value, and discuss why it is important in a child's life. Ways to talk about the value are included, and activities to reinforce the value are suggested. At the end of each chapter, extra resources are listed concerning the value discussed. In an easy-to-read format, the book discusses 16 values like loyalty, respect, patience and cooperation. Parents will appreciate advice for ways children may react to values, and teachers will be pleased to find helpful hints to celebrate values in the classroom. Children will benefit from the home activities, like growing a garden and making up new solutions to problems seen on television. In addition to improving their grasp on teaching specific principles, parents themselves may find they have gained a better respect for values. Through helping children incorporate values in their everyday lives, parents will play a key role model for making the teachings stick with their children for years.

Beautiful book.......2007-05-30
Rewald's biography of Cezanne is a very fine piece of work. It is beautifully written with substantial information about the artist & his work. As for all reputable art books, the paper quality is very good to render lovely reproductions of the paintings.
It is very nicely presented & a pleasure to read. . . or just look at the paintings.
Gorgeous Cezanne Biography.......2003-02-26
This is a wonderful book about Cezanne. Every artist who is studying art history and esp. the impressionists and post-impressionists should own this book.
Well-Worth The Hefty Price.......2000-12-10
I have read many books on Cezanne over the past 10 years and in my opinion this is the best. For a combination of well-written text and excellent reproductions of the paintings this book cannot be beat. The text is jargon free. Mr. Rewald was a wonderful writer and he gives you a warm and sympathetic biography of a great artist and complex and difficult man. Cezanne was very neurotic. He had a fear of women and would not use nude models. His famous bather series was worked up from photographs and plaster casts, etc. He could be very anti-social: he sometimes would cross the street to avoid meeting someone he knew. He was very emotional and struggled to keep his emotions under control. This was reflected in his work. His early work was full of violence and shadows and you feel as though he barely was able to keep himself in check as he coated the canvas in a thick impasto. The later, carefully controlled and beautifully harmonized works are the more familiar to the general public. The cover gives you some indication of the beautiful reproductions which are inside this book. This is a great addition and in my opinion a must have for anyone's art library.
Bravo! Bravo!.......2000-05-09
I really enjoyed this wonderful book about a wonderfully delightful artist. I would recommend reading it if you are a Cezanne admirer, absolutely a wonderful book!

Book Description
Michael Doran has gathered texts by contemporaries of Paul Cézanne (1839-1906)--including artists, critics, and writers--that illuminate the influential painter's philosophy of art especially in his late years. The book includes historically important essays by a dozen different authors, including Emile Bernard, Joaquim Gasquet, Maurice Denis, and Ambroise Vollard, along with selections from Cézanne's own letters.
In addition to the material included in the original French edition of the book, which has also been published in German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese, this edition contains an introduction written especially for it by noted Cézanne scholar Richard Shiff. The book closes with Lawrence Gowing's magisterial essay, "The Logic of Organized Sensations," first published in 1977 and long out of print.
Cézanne's work, and the thinking that lay behind it, have been of inestimable importance to the artists who followed him. This gathering of writings will be of enormous interest to artists, writers, art historians--indeed to all students of modern art.

Rilke's prayerful responses to the french master's beseeching art
For a long time nothing, and then suddenly one has the right eyes.
Virtually every day in the fall of 1907, Rainer Maria Rilke returned to a Paris gallery to view a Cezanne exhibition. Nearly as frequently, he wrote dense and joyful letters to his wife, Clara Westhoff, expressing his dismay before the paintings and his ensuing revelations about art and life.
Rilke was knowledgeable about art and had even published monographs, including a famous study of Rodin that inspired his New Poems. But Cezanne's impact on him could not be conveyed in a traditional essay. Rilke's sense of kinship with Cezanne provides a powerful and prescient undercurrent in these letters -- passages from them appear verbatim in Rilke's great modernist novel, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. Letters on Cezanne is a collection of meaningfully private responses to a radically new art.
Customer Reviews:
How to create in seeing as poet and artist .......2005-02-27
Rilke understands Cezanne as one ' who lived in the innermost center of his work for forty years'. The old man who he describes being thrown stones at by children on his way to his studio where he worked and worked, and only worked from the time he found his vocation at the age of thirty, is the example to Rilke of the totally dedicated artist. This artist has that kind of patience which slowly lets his work enfold, layer upon layer. In this as always with Rilke remarkably beautiful and haunting collection of letters he tells of his encounter with the work of Cezanne and how the true artist brings into fuller being the object he sees and creates. Rilke is quoted in the introduction as he talks of " the scales of an infinitely responsive conscience.. which so incorruptibly reduced a reality to its color content that that reality resumed a new existence in a beyond of color, without any previous memories".
This statement so suggestive is typical of the Rilkean text which seems like poetry itself to offer more meanings than any single reading can grasp.
My brief remarks comment upon a few of those suggestions. I believe readers of this work will be inspired to seeing , reading, and in their own minds through the reading, creating of their own on a higher level.
Letters about the spirituality of art.......2001-01-16
The encounter with the work of Cezanne was one of the milestones in the life of the poet Rilke. The letters which are collected here show why. Rilke, like Cezanne, was a man who was religious in an unconventional way. He was not interested in any particular concept of God, but in the process of discerning the divine in the sheer existence of things as they are: "All talk is misunderstanding. Insight is just in work." What he admired most in Cezanne's work was his "devout objectivity", the ability to let objects speak for themselves without the intellectual interference by the artist and without preconceived notions. Rilke felt that when Cezanne painted the mountain Sainte Victoire, for example, he wanted to show the essence of the mountain, the mountain pure and simple, nothing more, nothing less.
The German edition of the Letters on Cezanne contains an excellent afterword which quotes the philosopher Martin Heidegger who wrote, "we come too late for the Gods, and too early for being," meaning we do not live in the safety of believing in the Gods any more, and we do not trust in simply being yet. Rilke was acutely aware of this state of suspension, and the collection of his letters on Cezanne gives us an idea of how Rilke as an artist intended to make sense of this life in suspension.
Painting thru the eyes of a poet.......1999-10-14
This book gives one a glimpse of a painters genius as seen through the eyes of a poet. Rilke possesses the poetic sensitivity to shed some light on Cezannes paintings. This along with Delacroixs Journal and Van Goghs Letters to Theo really afford one a literary appreciation of the great European artists.
