The period advertisement reproductions are excellent.......2004-12-04
In the era when railroads were the primary method of arriving to a national park, railroad companies encouraged the designation of national parks and were the allies of preservationists, though their motives were not altruistic. The railroads sought more passengers and in turn, more profit. National parks proved the ticket to achieve their aims. Though not driven by preservationist aims, railroads had a hand in raising ecological awareness among their passengers and even magazine readers, with striking, sometimes full-color advertisements in periodicals nationwide. In Trains of Discovery: Western Railroads and the National Parks Alfred Runte looks not only at history, but shows the price the nation has paid, both socially and environmentally, for its love affair with the automobile.
Runte details the crucial role railroads played in the establishment, protection and improvement of national parks. The Northern Pacific was at the forefront of efforts to designate Yellowstone a national park. Other rail lines played similar roles, such as the Great Northern's vociferous campaign to designate Glacier National Park. Railroads unwaveringly supported the National Park Service legislation, looking forward to working with one government agency committed to promoting national parks (49). Stephen Mather, the first director of the Park Service, teamed with railroads to promote the national parks. The railroads rarely portrayed environmental consciousness in their guidebooks, but dependence on unspoiled scenery to sell national parks as a destination restrained more extractive aims, such as logging and mining (24). Railroad support of Yellowstone as a breeding ground for big game heightened awareness that the West was a refuge for wildlife (29).
In the 1960s, rail transportation to national parks and the NPS alliance with the railroads dimmed. As early as 1916, automobile passengers exceeded train passengers in Yosemite National Park (66). Opponents of the Yosemite Valley Railroad were misguided into thinking the line would have a negative impact on the valley. By 1945 the Yosemite Valley Railroad ceased operations and the NPS was given no choice but to accommodate more automobiles to please the surmounting hoard of tourists. At first, preservationists sided with auto accommodation, thinking it would be better than alternatives such as reservoirs and power lines. It is clear the automobile has degraded the environment more than any rail line ever could. The National Parks have intensely suffered from Americans' desire for greater independence behind the wheels of their cars.
Runte advocates public transportation as the only way to serve both access and preservation (7). He details how the shuttle service instituted in Yosemite in 1970 became popular once tourists realized the convenience and lack of auto congestion. The mandatory shuttle service in Zion National Park has seen similar positive reception.
Though the narrative is engaging and informative, Runte's treatment is light. He leaves the reader wanting more. The volume lacks thorough detail, such as the perceptions of the national park railroad experience from its early passengers. The narrative clearly utilizes a "top-down" approach. The book's main strength is its reprints of period railroad advertisements and photographs. The reader can actually decipher the text of each advertisement and get a feel for the romanticism of the age - a romanticism Runte hopes will resurge so national parks will be better preserved for future generations.
An imaginative look at passenger trains and National Parks.......1997-11-27
Trains of Discovery does well what few books seem to do today -- it looks into the texture of American's past for hidden lessons important for our future. The author has done a masterful job educating readers about how and why America's railroads contributed to the development of the National Park system, a unique story about an industry electing to connect itself with America's spectacular natural landscapes. It examines the railroads' commercial objectives, their sponsorship of unique artwork that captured the spirit of the age, the mobility and development issues at the time, and how all of this affected our national cultural identity. This book, with its clear writing and rich illustrations, also makes learning about all this fun. The author looks to the future and passionately and effectively conveys the need to restore passenger rail service to natural areas as an alternative to auto congestion and pollution. He concludes, "Trains and the national parks just naturally go together." He has me convinced, and as an author and public speaker I've found myself quoting Mr. Runte's book many times.

An interesting view of a curious land........2005-03-28
As a frequent visitor to the Middle East, I have made it my business to learn something about the various countries, the peoples and their customs in addition to the local flora and fauna. Of course, my main interest is the underwater world in general and it's many outstanding shipwrecks in particular. Whilst there is plenty of published material about both the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea, finding other information - that is both accurate and up-to-date, is not always easy.
In this book, the author skilfully avoids the conflicts which have beset the region for the past 100 years or more and concentrates on the ecology. Portraying the haunting deserts with their unique flora and curious creatures alongside mountains bedecked with juniper and inhabited by even more curious - and often dangerous, creatures, this author has done an excellent job of bringing the various habitats to life.
With the inclusion of chapters on both the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, this is as complete a work on the subject as one would hope to find and is also a most interesting read.

Engaging history........1998-10-07
Interestingly, the author views World Wars I and II, and the Cold War, essentially as one extended conflict of the North Atlantic peoples, rooted in geography and climate.
Using the adventures of a World War II infantryman of the U.S. 66th Division, a busy Liberty Ship, and a peripatetic bottle of rum as unifying elements, Hatcher inventively reinterprets the conflict through themes of sky, sand, snow, sea, and shore, more specifically, the turning point battles of Britain (air), North Africa (sand), Stalingrad (snow), North Atlantic (sea), and Normandy (shore). Along the way he touches on some old traditions of the British Navy, assesses in passing the personalities of leaders, notes the function of music and the arts in the war effort, and traces the contribution of Humphrey Bogart!
This is such an entertaining and useful work that it seems churlish to mention typos and errors ("Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is indelibly identified with the Andrews Sisters, not Bing Crosby, and who could mistake the immortal Spike Jones hit "Der Fuhrer's Face" as the work of Vaughn Monroe?). These quibbles aside, Hatcher's work is recommended as an original and highly readable contribution to the understanding of World War II, which even old buffs will find worthwhile.
(The "score" rating is an unfortunately ineradicable feature of the page. This reviewer does not "score" books.)
Enjoyable reading by a consummate historian-storyteller........1998-09-08
North Atlantic Civilization at War The World War II Battles of Sky, Sand, Snow, Sea and Shore by Patrick Lloyd Hatcher, M.E. Sharpe, Publishers, 1998
In this slender, 150 page, volume, Hatcher has created a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience. He leaves the reader with a feeling of having gained perspective on a subject which tends to overwhelm one with a wealth of information. This is accomplished by focusing upon those major campaigns, the air battle of Britain, the desert battle of El Alamein, the Russian Reversal, the Atlantic Supply Route and the Anzio and Normandy Landings, which proved to be turning points of the war. By foregoing the attempt at a complete history he spares the reader the numbing effect of detail so common in military history.
This avoidance of detail is amply compensated by a very extensive reading list which reflects the wide ranging research which has gone into this work. This reading list is complimented by extensive footnotes, which mercifully appear at the end of each chapter, sufficiently elaborated to make them meaningful additions, rather than testimony to the hard work of research.
But what makes the book so enjoyable, is the skill of Hatcher the Historian, as the consummate storyteller.
"The Snow. Russian snow is unlike ordinary snow, which consists of individual flakes that descend and, sooner rather than later, melt. Rather, Russian snow drops in shovelsful - seemingly unstopping and unmelting. Like swarms of winter locusts, snow squalls swoop down. Forget flurries swirling around Alpine ridges; think blizzards blasting across Soviet steppes. Once having crossed onto Russian frost, it is almost impossible to avoid at least one Russian freezing. ----- When Hitler ordered the attack on the Soviet Union, he overwhelmingly committed German power to that campaign. Of 3,800,000 men in the army at that date, Hitler sent 3,200,000 against the Red Army, assisted by 3,500 tanks and 7,184 pieces of artillery. ---- The impression lingers that this force rode into battle. Not so; most had to walk. And if something had to arrive by transport, often the transporter had four legs - over 600,000 horses accompanied the invaders. Of their number, half died in the first winter.---- Cruel, cold death under a white blanket; folly of the highest order had taken a generation of innocents on both sides to death's deep freeze. And then there was the snow, always the snow."
Another laudable trait of the author is his willingness to offer an opinion; for example, his occasional thoughts on the necessary ingredients of a successful strategy. This provides a frame of reference for the strategic decisions of the involved commanders and the conflicts produced by the political issues facing their superiors.
Finally, I am left to wonder about the use of the word "Civilization" in the books title. Popular entertainement is surely part of a "civilization" and provides insight into the attitudes of the peoples who stood behind the war effort. It is a very effective device for readers to identify with this history, to the extend of their personal experience. But if such encompassing considerations are deemed germane, how can one completely ignore the German preoccupation with racial purity which allowed influential and otherwise well educated (civilized?) people to endorse, accept or ignore the excesses of German policy, which dealt the most devastating blow to "Western Civilization" ?

Don't attempt the table.......2007-03-23
I have been working wood for a few years, and have followed a good many plans. However, I have had nothing but problems with this book. The table inside that is laid out in plans requires about [...]in materials, and thousands in headaches. It seems as if the plans were measured by a 5 year old high on kool-aid, then written down the next morning after he's forgotten most of the measurements. The carriage doesn't fit right, the plan causes the router to become locked into the table, unless you wish to remove the upper piece that holds the rod to raise the router, and the rod. By the way, that piece isn't included in the plans, either. It just assumes you figure to build it. It doesn't detail assembly, and includes grossly incorrect measurements for some pieces. After purchasing this book, it has become a great method of collecting sawdust. As a matter of fact, so has the table that is outlined within. I strongly do not recommend this book unless you are just looking for a few common sense jigs.
Customer Reviews:
Of interest to would-be specialists.......2007-01-29
This book should be of interest to people who are interested in becoming specialist growers, and especially breeders, particularly if they are interested in one of the few plant types covered: Hostas, Daylilies, Roses, Antique Fruit Trees, Herbal Arts, Dwarf Conifers, Peonies, Wildflowers (of the Southeastern woods), Lilies, Peppers. One does learn what it takes to be such a specialist, and the pros and cons of various plants, but there are better sources for info on each type of plant.
There is beginning info on propagation of most of these plant types, and on setting up the landscape and work areas for growing and propagating them. It is not especially helpful for general horticulturists looking for tips on various types of plants. Perhaps "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden" is the best resource for most such gardeners, and/or whichever book best covers a given genus or other category (there are books exclusively on most of these plant types).
Book Description
A handy trade paperback that presents thousands of appealing names from which parents can make a suitable selection for their newborns. Each entry gives the origin and meaning of the name and suggests one Hebrew equivalent. Includes Anglicized forms of the latest and most popular names used in Israel. A must for prospective parents.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting approach, but not great.......2006-03-16
If you are looking for Jewish names that start with a particular letter (which I think is how many people go about naming their babies, especially if they have a particular family member that they would like to commemorate) this book is not convenient to use.
It provides names with origins that are not necessarily Jewish and then offers Hebrew equivalent which most often begin with another letter entirely. Perhaps if there was a separate section that offered a way of looking up Hebrew names alphabetically as well, and then offered information on their meaning, it would have been more usable. As is, I found it to be inadequate.
A good shem is better than good shemen.......2001-05-20
As it is said, `a good name is better than fragrant oil (tov shem mi shemen tov)." A straightforward good guide, and listings of male and female names, selected from Kolatch's other works which date back to 1948. Also includes about 200 unisex names, such as Ari, Avi, Dodi, Ariel, Doron, Lior, Sharon, Tzipor and Zohar. For each listing, Kolatch provides a meaning and a Hebrew equivalent. For example, Larry is Latin and directs the reader to see "Laurence." Laurence's listing states that is is latin meaning `laurel crown.' The Hebrew equivalent is listed as Kalil. Mario's listing is akin to Marcus, meaning warlike as in "Mars.". The Hebrew equivalent is listed as Mordechai. ZIPORA will direct the reader to TZIPORA, which, when found, states that it is from the Hebrew, meaning "bird." It's Hebrew equivalent is naturally, "Tzipora." Listings for Tzipori (my bird) and Tziporit and Tzipi occur close to Tzipora. George is listed as Greek, meaning farmer; its Hebrew equivalent is listed as Choresh. But there is no listing for Choresh. The book is fine for 98% of readers, but if you are wondering whether you should name your child Gilad with an Aleph or an Ayin, then you need to consult a book with Hebrew characters or a local Hebraist. I would like the book better if it included Hebrew spellings, and if it listed some famous personages for each name listing. For example, the listing for Boaz should mention where he occurs in the stort of Ruth; or Jose should mention the Aramaic speaking rabbis by that name

Book Description
French architect Auguste Perret (18741954) was a pioneering precursor to the Modern Movement. His career is inextricably linked to the constructional technique of reinforced concrete: in works such as his 1903 apartment building in rue Franklin, Paris, concretea material that previously had been perceived as common and industrialwas reinvented, handled artistically and given its own idiom. Le Corbusier described this building as 'a foretaste of the modern world'.With his projects in France and abroad, such as the MusZ#157;e des Travaux Publics in Paris, the Church of Notre-Dame at Raincy and many other domestic, industrial and urban projects, Perret caught the attention of a generation searching for a new architecture appropriate to the twentieth century. A committed constructor and innovator, Perret simultaneously adhered to structural classicist principles, continuously resisting the more transitory aspects of the avant-garde.This monograph is the first sustained study of Perret in English, richly illustrated with new colour photography as well as drawings and photographs from the Perret archive. It also includes an appendix of Perret's aphorisms and other writings, which provide an insight into his craft and its artistic social priciples.
Customer Reviews:
a forgotten master.......2005-03-09
I was first drawn to Auguste Perret when I saw an exhibit of his work in Paris and have since been searching for a book which can convey the beauty of Perret's life work. Although this book has many great pictures, I miss the quality exhibited in the actual renderings. The book however, has much more to offer, and goes into depth about Perret's philosophies, the effects of his work, and his relationship with the infamous Le Corbusier. The style of writing coveys all of this information in an interesting fashion by incoporating specific stories. I particularly loved the cartoon that Corb drew with Perret sitting in front of a ribbon window (the commentary behind it is equally funny if you know architecture). The portion of the book on housing gives to architects a valuable lesson on how a building should not only serve a function but should make the ordinary daily routine much more interesting and enjoyable. I am struck with this quote from the book given by a man living in the pavillion for Madame Mela Muter: "The elements of this house are of such a fashion that to live there is pleasurable. It is pleasurable to open a door, pleasurable to close it, pleasurable to go from one room to another. What is marvellous, is that it remains as pleasurable at the end of two years as on the first day." If only we could learn from the work of Perret, a truly unique and gifted man who stood stubbornly by his vertical Parisian window while the austere architecture of Le Corbusier's strip window took hold of our concept of modern architecture.
Auguste Perret.......2001-12-29
A valuable addition to a series of monographs from this publisher. Karla Britton's account of the great French architect-engineer, a master of concrete construction like Breuer, but one who straddled two eras, combining boldly expressed structures with rich surface ornament. The Theatre des Champs Elysees was completed before the first world war, and its "nudity" shocked Parisians as much as the barbaric rhythms of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, which provoked a riot when it was premiered here. Now, Perret's masterwork can be seen as a perfect balance of grace and daring--the greatest theater in the city. A couple of apartment blocks were even more ahead of their time, but Perret, like Breuer, stayed around too long and the later work, particularly the rebuilding of Le Havre, diminished his standing. Books of this quality and importance deserve much better production values. The series is overpriced and poorly designed; the bindings are fragile, the illustrations drab, and there is not even a proper title page.
