Book Description
Finally, a book that speaks to the heart of anyone seeking a true understanding of how the Vietnam war unfolded in the lives of those who fought in it.
Not your typical war story, Searching for the Good is a sincere and very human account of one man's journey to war and back. Without policies, position statements, or rhetoric, it offers a clear and compelling picture of the day-to-day experiences of a combat veteran--his thoughts and feelings, his fear and pride, his recovery, his enduring friendships with other soldiers.
While a story of one man's journey to war and back, the book tells the story of that multitude of anonymous men and women who served with honor in Vietnam, came home, and went on with their lives, in spite of much pain and torment.

Best book I've ever read about Viet Nam, the real deal........2005-07-18
This book takes you on the whole ride' a mans life and his journey there and back. A must read for anyone who wants to know the real story, no gloss just the real deal, a mans conclusions on war.
Searching for the good by Thomas Brewer.......2004-04-24
This is the finest Vietnam book ever written for folks who were in that war. The last chapters are the best.
Read This Book To Feel What It Was Like In Vietnam.......2001-02-24
I received this book from a friend who had met the author and thought I'd be interested, since I was a Vietnam Vet also. Tom Brewer's book was a wonderful read. It brought back many memories, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it was written. There is no stumbling through this book; you're quickly drawn into Tom's life and his experiences. And though all of us have unique experiences in life, Tom's memories are often similar to mine. I felt myself agreeing with Tom's expressions of patriotism in the 50s, the desire to "serve our country" for what it had given us, the need to "make up" for a relative who hadn't served in World War II, and the desire to help others and follow a code of behavior which was admired. I, too, was an officer in the US Army, stationed in the Mekong Delta, in a combat branch, though fortunately not in face to face combat. Tom helped me to feel what he felt and I strongly recommend the book to anyone wishing to participate in the Vietnam war and times through his first hand experience.
Though I respect Tom's experiences and commend him for his service, I can't say I agree with his conclusions about the War. However, that is what made the Vietnam era so very interesting and challenging. Every soldier's experience in Vietnam was somewhat different and each person's war was different, too. Some soldiers came home saying as Tom did, we could have won "if only", and others came home saying this war wasn't ours to win or lose, it was the South Vietnamese's. The same issues argued about in the United States were often spoken by the soldiers who served there. But the overall feelings of this war were well expressed by Tom.
We have every right to be proud of our service for most of us went to Vietnam because our country asked us to do so. We wanted to serve our country and we did it proudly! Thank you Tom for sharing your life with the rest of us.
Recommended for military buffs & political science students........2001-01-05
In Searching For The Good: A Young Man's Journey To War And Back is the intense personal story of Thomas Brewer's personal sojourn from the unreflective patriotism 1950s, post-World War II childhood, to the font lines of the Cold War in Germany, to lethal and political ambiguous, controversial combat in Vietnam, to his post war struggle to build a life in a society that just wanted to forget it all. Highly recommended for military buffs, political science and social science students, as well as the non-specialist general reader with an interest in late 20th Century American history, Searching For The Good is part military memoir, part social/political analysis, and offers a unique, comprehensive, compelling perspective on the times and the events that shaped a generation of young men just like Tom Brewer.
A first hand history lesson.......2000-11-20
I am giving this book to all my friends who were in Vietnam as a thank you. My high school and college years were spent debating the pros and cons of our involvement in this war that wasn't a war. Contemporaries were dying while we questioned and protested. Tom Brewer tells his story with such ease yet it is packed with poignancy. We didn't appreciate then how lucky we were to have such heroes. Worse yet we didn't recognize them for all their sacrifices on their return. There is no changing the past but I'll make a point of thanking all those that I know and making sure that my children read this book so they never forget a generation of men who are often forgotten.

A Surprising Tale of Literary Nonfiction.......2007-05-29
Dr. Murray sews together his stories seamlessly. The stories are both quaint and hysterical. His eye for detail gets down to the last inch of the scene. He has a way of drawing you into the story so that you won't want to miss a beat. This book is great for the summer beach bag.
Share this book with your loved ones..........2003-11-24
I must confess that my initial interest in "Come Reminisce with Me" was one of local history. But what I discovered was something deeper than descriptions of Lima, Ohio in the 1930s. Murray's simple style and delicious imagery of youthful experiences took me back to a time in my own life when each day was a new adventure. These memories are intricately woven with humor and humility, joy and compassion, leading the reader through youthful rites of passage on the road to evolving maturity.
Share this book with your friends, kids and grandkids and watch what happens. It's sure to spark dialogue about some of life's most endearing and enduring experiences and values.

A book of many Special Stories........2003-11-24
This is a book of many Special Stories. So well written you feel you were there. It is one of those books you cannot stop reading till you finish that last Story.
Those were the good old days........2003-11-23
This book transforms you back to a simpler time in life and one where neighbors really cared about each other.Life at the time might not have seemed so easy but loyalty, manners, patriotic spirit and faith were essential ingredients to a wonderful childhood in the Midwest. You can almost picture yourself in the middle of the neighborhood the author describes and can visualize the characters he describes. It is so pleasant to read.
Small town life, lived with a big heart........2003-11-22
Although Dr. Emmett "Duke" Murray's book "Come Reminisce With Me" is specific to the place of his hometown, Lima,Ohio, and to the time of his coming of age, the 1930's & 40's, this compact collection of memoirs is as broad as life itself. I eagerly picked up my copy to read one evening because I know Lima as my own hometown, and am familiar with Dr. Murray as my father's partner for 38 years in the practice of medicine. I anticipated some interesting historical insights into our provincial little corner of the world. Instead I found a rich collection of images that captured the essence of life itself as seen through the experiences of one bright and curious young boy. I laughed ("Some of My Best Friends Were Dogs"), I cried ("What I Learned From a Boyhood Chum")and I did wax nostalgic ("Some Day I'll Live There"), but most of all I was touched by the beauty of life lived honestly, openly, and with a sense of humor. When my copy arrived in the mail I casually paged through it before supper, became hooked, and literally could not put it down for the rest of the evening. By the time I went to bed late that night, I had read through the whole book. If that's not the definition of a page-turner, I don't know what is. No matter where you are from, or when you grew up, this gem of a little book will find a warm place in your heart.

Tailored for 13- to 19-year-old girls (sorry, guys) The Diet for Teenagers Only dishes up a sensible balance of recipes, weight loss strategies, and straight talk about food. Writing partners Carrie Wiatt (Eating by Design) and Barbara Schroeder convey all the messages nutrition-wise moms want their daughters to hear--in an informed, best-friend voice their teens will actually listen to.
Trust builds as readers discover "Things They Never Told You;" like how puberty naturally increases a girl's body fat, diet soda promotes weight gain, and carbohydrates aren't all bad. No mention of ideal weight spoils the fun, here; rather, Wiatt and Schroeder utilize an age-appropriate BMI (Body Mass Index) to help judge who's truly overweight and who simply needs "a better body image reality check." Doodled stars and hearts further enliven the book's chummy tone, but never upstage the important stuff: food portion guides; nutrients for healthy bodies; calorie requirements based on BMI ranges; low-fat cooking techniques and recipes; weekly menus and shopping strategies for weight loss; and discussions about how a teen's emotions often drive her eating cycle. Q & A sections slip between meatier chapters, allowing tough issues like fasting, cravings, and eating disorders to be addressed with empathy and pragmatism. Surprisingly helpful are the restaurant and vending machine guidelines, featuring side-by-side substitution lists, titled "Eat This" and "Not That". Brimming with loving encouragement and the wisdom of gals who have been there, The Diet for Teenagers Only sends a clear message to girls: form good habits now.--Liane Thomas
Book Description
Here's the deal. You are in the biggest, most important growth spurt of your life. This is the most critical time for you to learn to eat right and treat your body with the respect –– and the nutrition –– it deserves.
––from The Diet for Teenagers Only
Teenage girls face a relentless assault on their self–esteem: television, the Internet, and magazines all barrage young women with images of perfection –– and that perfection is closely linked with being thin. Sadly, research shows that only 14 percent of teenage girls are happy with their body shape and size. More than half of them think they should lose weight. And most shocking of all, obesity among teenagers has tripled in the last decade alone. Young people are victims not only of poor self–esteem and eating disorders, but also of larger health issues.
In The Diet for Teenagers Only , Carrie Wiatt and Barbara Schroeder give teenagers the dietary weapons they need to fight back and make smart, independent decisions about nutrition. Written in a conversational, lighthearted voice, but filled with practical tips and must–have information, The Diet for Teenagers Only is a breakthrough diet plan specifically tailored to fit teenage needs and lifestyles. Among the essential ingredients of this diet you'll find:
- color cutouts of favorite foods that clarify what portion sizes should look like;
- recommended 7–day meal plans for different calorie needs –– and create–your–own–menu options;
- easy–to–follow recipes and grocery shopping tips that inspire teenagers to take nutrition into their own hands;
- a complete illustrated exercise program to complement weight–loss efforts, boost energy, and strengthen young bodies; and
- a personal food diary for charting daily progress.
For teenagers who struggle with food and their weight, or for those who simply want a head start on designing a smart and satisfying food lifestyle, no other diet book will do. The Diet for Teenagers Only serves up fun, safe, and inspirational ways for teenagers to lose weight and be healthy, while never losing sight of the larger picture: While striving to improve your body can be a very healthy goal, learning to love your body is a far more important achievement –– and one that will last a lifetime!

Too bad I don't live in LA.......2007-08-28
While reading this book I'll admit I got a bit excited. But when you get down to it, they really didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I felt the diet plan was very "LA-esque," the requirements of which I couldn't always meet in my NYC suburb. On top of that, a lot of their meal suggestions go against the new and updated food pyramid, and many of their recipes have A LOT of fat in them. Bottom line, there are better choices out there to learn how to eat healthily.
great.......2007-04-10
this book is really nice, good way to help teens see what kind of foods they should be eating.
Very Good- Combine with Toning For Teens.......2007-02-26
I bought both "The Diet for Teenagers Only" and "Toning for Teens" by Joyce Vedral about 10 days ago, and I have already noticed a difference. Combining the healthy eating plan with the exercise program is already affecting me. I feel stronger (but a little sore) and I have more energy. Also, I have lost about 5 pounds! So I would call that a good start, if you do the math 10 days/5 pounds = 1/2 pound per day. The Pom tea recipe in this book tastes pretty good to me... and makes great popsicles! If it's not sweet enough for you, add orange juice or apple juice (both unfiltered with no sugar added). Also, the diet is pretty easy to stick to, make sure to keep a food diary because it does help! Even on days where I overate, I was still only eating about 1700 calories. These are two very smartly written books and they can help you on you goal to a healthy lifestyle!
P.S. A great way to make raw or cooked vegetables taste better without adding fat or even many calories is to dip them in vinegar-balsamic, white wine, distilled white, or many of the flavored vinegars on the market. Also, drink those 6 glasses a water per day. You will need to go to the bathroom more, but you feel... lubricated? I don't know. It just feels nice.
Pretty Sweet.......2007-02-19
I'm 13, almost 14, and my mom bought me this book because I was concerned about my health and body image. I'm not overweight, but I know how important it is to eat healthy and maintain an ideal weight for my age. Unlike most dieting books I've read, this book is low pressure and actually makes me feel good about myself. Just knowing that I am a girl and I deserve to look and feel beautiful. It's easy to understand and to follow, and also easy to stick to. I love how exercise is encouraged along with making healthy decisions. Along with health information, this book also features easy recipes and dieting plans from experienced nutritionists. Pretty sweet. I'd definitely recommend it.
great for teens!.......2007-02-13
I'm 14 and I got this book after finding out that diets like Weight Watchers and South Beach are not for teens. I read the whole thing on a sick day from school and it taught me how to find good portions are and how to read a nutritian lable on foods. It also taught me how to loose weight safe and with helpful tips for exercise and diet. This book is the best thing for teenagers looking to loose weight or just learn how to eat healthier! I have only been on it for 2 weeks and have already lost 7 lbs!

Not So Easy Food Combining.......2005-08-21
This book was written and published in the UK, with some terms, language, and measurements being unfamiliar to those of us in the States. The diet is complicated enough without those little problems. I felt some things were contradictory, and there is still, even after a month, a rather distracting and disagreeable odor to the book. The recipe photos are lovely...amazing really, considering the contents of some of the recipes!
a beautiful, fantastic book!.......2005-04-23
This book is exceptionally well written. The author/s are as clear as a bell, and very fact oriented. They update hay and sheltons outdated theories with current understanding of human anatomy and physiology. On top of that, it is gorgeous to look at, a big book loaded with professional (often contemporary-especially the recipe pics) color photographs. It is selling for $15, it probably cost more to print it! I recommend it very highly!
The only discrepancy is that the one that shipped to me has a different cover than the one pictured, expect to get an artistic close up of a lemon or something. It is not a big thing I actually prefer the one I received to the one amazon has a picture of.
a real bible for a healthier life.......2005-02-11
This book is perfect if you are looking for a book that promotes healthy food. No protein powders, diet pills, supplements, but just clean fresh food. The author explaines really well how the digestive system is working, all beautifully illustrated.
Montignac's system in fact was based on the food combining principles.
The book includes a vast amount of recipes and lots of practical quideliness for a healthy lifestyle.
This book is not about a diet, a quick fix to loose weight, but a complete change of lifestyle. Gradually i became convinced this is the way to go. I feel much more energetic since i started following the principles explained in the book. The fact that this book is not followed by a lawine of special marketed products you should buy, tells you that this is a genuine attempt to advocate a healthier lifestyle.
It's careless!!.......2003-05-11
Lots of colour pictures, nice layout etc make this book easy on the eye. But they've made such a 'negligent error' that you should think twice before buying. The whole idea about food combinations is represented by a diagram on pg 45 which uses arrows to show the foods you can and cannot combine. The problem is THEY'VE MISSED OUT HALF OF THE ARROWS!! It's just silly. OK you can piece together the rest of the diagram if you read the book but, hey come on, we're paying money for this.
food combining bible.......2002-05-06
This is a wonderful book and I love the recipes. This book along with exercise has lowed my blood pressure. I wish I had read it along time ago. It has opened up a new world for me. Thank you Jan and Inge Dries.

It's a Dog's Life.......2000-04-27
At first glance, browsers will think this is a children's book. Children will enjoy it, but so will dog lovers and probably anyone who has encountered these dogs on visits to Provincetown. I think you'd buy this book as much for the art work as for the telling paragraphs about each of the 14 dogs featured. The book will appeal to dog owners who enjoy sharing stories of their own pets. They'll wish their 4-legged housemates had been immortalized with the Provincetown cast.

A Treasury of Ideas for Home Design - Beautifully Illustrated.......2007-07-17
I am a professional engineer serving as my own architect and general contractor for the conversion of a three-story building into offices for my firm plus a luxury apartment on the top floor. I am also an avid collector of engineering, technology, and architecture/design books with a 1,000-volume personal library.
I wanted to be sure that I explored a wide range of choices as I selected finished for office and apartment spaces in my building. I expected and received in this book a good overview for all of the common finishes used in residential spaces. I also received, much to my delight, a treasury of design ideas in the more than 200 color photos and illustrations. This is not a do-it-yourself handbook found at the checkout stand at Home Depot, although those are valuable as well. Although written for those designing living spaces, much of the information is useful for those designing office and other commercial spaces.
This 208-page, wirebound book was beautifully designed - one of perhaps fifteen books in my library whose production qualities are so superior that I show them to friends in the publishing business as examples of a well-produced book. The design and production were by a NYC firm; the printing was done in China; the author is British.
The content is similarly excellent. The book is divided into eight sections: simple paint, paint finishes, plaster & concrete, wall coverings, tiles, wood, glass & metal, and "putting it all together."
I bought this from one of Amazon's allied sellers at a very low price. Amazon is commended for offering this service. Amazon's committment to customer value and customer service are unsurpassed.
Excellent resource for Faux Painting.......2006-06-14
A woman that is passionately in love with Italy and all things Italian writes this review. Once I traveled to Italy, I wanted to bring that look back to my home. I purchased this book about 10 years ago and I still refer to it regularly. This book covers many techniques not just those that would apply to Italy.
I am an avid do-it-yourselfer and love to do things around the house. As an amateur artist, I take photographs and paint landscapes; I think that this book is a good as taking a class in faux painting. I feel that the directions and photographs of the various techniques are very well documented.
The book is subdivided as follows:
PART I - General Information
Intro - What Decorative Painting Can Do For You
1. Color: The Flavor in Every Recipe
2. Paint and Tools: The Staples
3. Preparing to Paint
4. Mixing Paints
5. Before You Begin
PART II - Recipes
6. Metals
7. Stone
8. Fantasy Marbling
9. Reasonable Replicas
10. Textured Wall Finishes
11. Small Surface Specialties and Stenciling
If you are not an artist, the first chapter on color is very handy. This chapter is also covered in the first book in this series. It teaches about the color wheel, the colors that harmonize, classic color schemes, and color moods. The chapter regarding tools is also very helpful, but again this is covered in the first book. It explains the difference between oil and water based products and the advantages and disadvantages of both. There is also a nice discussion of brushes and other tools that is very useful for the beginning artist.
The recipe for copper verdigris is very easy to replicate. This is one of my personal favorites. Likewise the bronze verdigris is also an easy look to achieve. The faux stone requires much more of an artistic sense to get right than the book suggests. Don't be frustrated if it does look right the first time. If you keep practicing, and look at some natural stone for inspiration, you will get it. I found that much of the difference is in the shadowing and highlighting. The suggested techniques for marbling and extremely are easy to replicate. This might be one of the easier techniques in the book to master. The fresco technique is one that I have used over and over in my home. The author suggests using regular paint and glaze. I found that using lime paint (available at most larger hardware stores) makes a more convincing end result.
Regarding stencils I would recommend using acetate and a stencil burner, it works better for me that the cardstock and exacto knife that is shown in the book. I would also recommend that you buy some poster board or use large pieces of cardboard to practice your techniques. I find this to be much easier than going to the wall immediately. Also, once I find a color combination and technique that I like I replicate the process on a small (8 x 11) piece of luan plywood. On the back of this plywood I document which paint colors and glazes I have used and which tools and techniques. I also document the rooms or furniture on which this combination was used. That way if I need to touch up something I know what I did the first time.
I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to try out some faux painting on his or her walls or their furniture. If you are artistically inclined this book will inspire you to get out the paints and change something in your home. I also recommend the first book in this series "Recipes for Surfaces". There is some duplication, but it also includes techniques not covered in this volume. I have found that the most important aspect to achieving the look that you want is to have a clear idea of what you want the end result to look like. In my case, I use photographs of Italian houses to achieve a similar look. I cannot emphasize enough how important photographs are to recreating a look. Please don't skip the photographs; it will make a huge difference.
Happy painting!

Comprehensive book for the beginner and pro alike.......2002-10-26
This is an excellent book for the beginner and professional alike. Good info on how to do all the "basic" faux finishes. Perfect to add to any library.
Only problem is that it can be a bit vague on instructions - especially for the beginner or do-it-yourselfer.
Great Basic Reference.......2001-09-27
Along with the companion book, Decorative Paint Finishes Made Simple, this is one of my core reference books for faux finished paint surfaces. Pictures are useful, instructions clear . . . a must-have for the faux painter's library.

"Country gardens" are popular these days. They are distinguished not so much by their location or size as by their abundance, informality, and profusion of color. Country Garden Planner shows 19 beautiful incarnations of the country garden--water gardens, scented gardens, shade gardens, dried-flower gardens--with photographs, plant suggestions, and a roughed-in plan for each. There's also a chapter on creating your own country garden, with advice on attracting birds and butterflies, container gardening, and using structures in the garden. The plant suggestions are satisfyingly old-fashioned, and include color, size, and zone information. Country Garden Planner isn't an in-depth planning guide, but the pictures and text are pleasantly harmonious, providing gentle inspiration to would-be bucolic green thumbs.

Country Garden Planner.......2000-05-31
As a new garderner, I think this book is great grouping flowers together and giving a brief description of the flower/plant. The pictures of what a healthy blooming flower looks like is ideal and I haven't seen such a nice "picture" book like this before. This book would be best used as a reference tool for new gardeners or for those who already know all about gardening but really want to use it as a planning guide. I don't think it would be as useful for someone who wants to see indepth descriptions of the plants.

Potager Planning!.......2000-03-24
The concept of a potager, or kitchen garden appeals to me greatly. I very much want my garden to be ornamental as well as edible. Somewhat similar to the idea of "edible landscaping", potagers often intermingle vegetables, herbs, and flowers, sometimes planting them in geometric shapes. Sort of a more formal, yet informal garden. Colorful. Interesting. Not your garden-variety garden. I've been looking for online articles and for books on potagers, which seem to be popular in England, but hard to find in the United States. I haven't been able to find much information on them.
Country Home's Kitchen Garden Planner by Darrell Trout is just what I was looking for. It takes the reader through mini-tours of thirteen different American potagers, with text, photographs, and a plan (illustrated map) for each garden. A few of the individual plant varieties are somewhat unusual, but they described and keyed to commercial sources. The one defect that I found was that a couple of the sources seem to be omitted from the index, or perhaps there was a typo, a minor flaw in an otherwise exciting book. The last chapter talks about basic gardening in general. I only wish there was more on potagers in the Midwest where I live. Then again, where I live, there is wheat as far as the eye can see and not much else.
I really like this book. I wanted ideas for designing a potager and this book has given me lots of ideas. It is strong on the visuals, which I wanted, but also has informative text. Plus, I can just copy or modify one of the garden designs in the book to suit my needs, personal preferences, and growing zone until my own style evolves.

What a wonderful book!.......2005-06-18
I can not tell you how this book has me slow down and really appreciate the relationship I have with God. Keri Wyatt Kent says that often times others base your spiritual life on how many times you read your Bible, how often you spend in prayer etc. Not that these things aren't important but we can find God in the everyday things that life presents us with if we just take a few moments to listen and be still. I have 2 young boys so I don't have alot time for myself. This book showed me that I can worship God in the little things day to day.
A Breath of Fresh Air.......2005-02-11
Many mothers desperately want to spend time with God but lack the energy or time to implement spiritual disciplines. For those moms, Kent's book will be a breath of fresh air. By honestly revealing her own struggles and the answers God gently led her to, the author helps moms realize that we can pray through the day (while washing dishes, driving carpool, sorting laundry) and that our spiritual life doesn't have to suffer because we don't have hours to devote to Bible study. What a relief!
Somebody really understands..........2004-01-15
This was the first book (besides a children's book) that I read cover to cover after becoming a mom. As wonderful as being a mom is, I was rather overwhelmed during the first year. I began to wonder if I would ever find my way back to peace and calm. This book helped me not only to realize that I was not alone, but also to learn practical steps I could take in order to draw closer to God in this new and busy season of my life. I highly recommend it to all moms out there.
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.......2002-09-06
As we weather the more difficult aspects of motherhood, sometimes the cold winds of challenge, disappointment (mostly in ourselves), and downright struggle can drive us to a place of despair and isolation. By her vulnerable writing in God's Whisper in a Mother's Chaos, Keri Kent wraps us in the warm blanket of discovery that we are not alone...
She follows that profound gift with a cup of hot chocolate in the form of practical tips on how to hear that gentle Voice that helps us rise above mere survival and become more fully be present to celebrate the miracle of motherhood.
God's Whisper is easy to read yet filled with authentic treasures the author undoubtedly acquired by listening to Jesus.
Keri Really Does Bring Peace Home!.......2001-04-02
This book is well worth the price! Keri Wyatt Kent is a gifted writer and this book is well written, east to read, and thought provoking. I highlighed much of it knowing I would refer to it again and again. Thanks to Keri, I'm able to more fully enjoy my moments as a mother and I've learned to hear God's whisper even in the most frustrating, unexpected moments. This is a must read for anyone with small children.
