    Book Description

Seaweeds of the Southeastern United States offers a definitive manual for the identification of the seaweeds that inhabit the deep offshore waters as well as the near shoreline and shallow sounds from North Carolina to Florida. The volume provides a natural key to the class, order, family, and genera with detailed descriptions, 560 illustrations, and an artificial key listing simple characteristics for quick identification of the green, brown, and red benthic marine algae (or “bottom growers”) that inhabit the region.
The southeastern Atlantic coast is home to 334 species of seaweed flora. The greatest diversity occurs along the North Carolina coast between Cape Lookout and Cape Fear. With the exception of a few additional species south of Cape Fear, there is not a marked change in the flora until the more tropical waters and seaweeds of southern Florida. The barrier island system of the region and the enclosed shallow water sounds extend the miles of shoreline available for study.
This book, the product of a twenty-year collaboration, is the first comprehensive guide to appear in over seventy years and includes the addition of nearly one hundred species to the region, including twenty-five described by the authors.

    Book Description

A complete adventure guide to California's astonishing array of national parks features 92 road and mountain bike rides through the state's most spectacular natural areas. From the snowcapped peaks of the Sierras to the towering coastal redwoods of Muir Woods, California's national parks are renowned for their splendor. Touring these national treasures by bike has become a favorite way to leave luggage-laden cars and busy roads behind and enjoy the hidden byways of these parks more fully. As Edward Abbey wrote, "A man on a bicycle will see more, feel more, enjoy more in one mile than the motorized tourist can in a hundred miles." Bike along the rugged coastline to the graceful beaches of Point Reyes, spin through the wild dunes of Death Valley, or pedal past the rock formations and climbers of Joshua Tree. Rides range in length from a 2-mile warm-up in Manzanar Historic Site to a breathtaking Yosemite tour of nearly 100 miles. Each ride description includes a detailed map, tour directions, information about the trail or road surface, sights along the way, and the length and difficulty of the ride. In addition, a trip-planning appendix for each park tells you where to stay or camp, do your laundry, eat, buy supplies, and repair or rent a bike.

    * The first and only guide to bicycling California's national parks and wilderness areas
    * Bicycling is becoming an evermore popular option as some national parks are closing roads to cars
    * Nearly 100 rides are described and mapped in detail
    * Part of the new national series: Bicycling America's National Parks
    * Includes professional color photographs of the parks

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but beware ..........2007-09-13

I agree with the other reviews that this book is informative and engagingly written, with excellent and thoroughly researched paved and back road routes. However, I noted two cases in the Yosemite descriptions where the author confused left and right. In ride 74 at the bottom of page 264 he writes that you "turn left (south) and then xleftx RIGHT! immediately again onto narrow Crescent Meadow Road. That one is obvious when you're there, but the other is crucial: In ride 70, in the middle of p. 258 "...before arriving at a meadow. It seems like you should go left, but stay to the right of the meadow." Nope--you must indeed go to the LEFT of that meadow to follow the described route (and the overall loop is to the right), while the right fork soon turns into barely recognizable cowpaths that eventually dead end in the woods. I mention this mainly because he makes such a big deal of it, and want to warn cyclists using the book to take the directions with a hint of caution.

    5 out of 5 stars Walk, don't run.......2005-01-10

This book "Bicycling America's National Parks" is part of the Backcountry series. Even thought I like bikes I prefer to go on foot. The same trails lend their selves to foot also.

Many a time I have been able to locate ranger stations where you can check in and be loosed on the back country trails. Luckily many people are not aware of these areas. Some trails you can go all day without running into a soul.

David Story should be ashamed of him self fore giving away the secret. But I am glad I found this book.

The book is divided into 15 locations and in each location there is a description of where you can stay and where you can rent bikes along with other relevant information.

There are also trail maps and photographs from the area. Most important is inclusion of addresses for more up to date and more detailed information.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique, Concise, Thorough, endlessly Readable Guidebook........2001-02-28

I just returned from a mountain biking vacation to Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave National Preserve, and Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area and this guidebook proved indespensible. It contains almost all information necessary to plan your trip and somehow manages to be both concise, thorough and readable.

Story introduces each chapter with a brief description of the geography and history of the park. Then Story lists several rides within the park, each accompanied by detailed descriptions (including technical and aerobic difficulty, best time of year to ride, overall length of trail, etc.) and maps. Though some road bike routes are included, most trails are for mountain bikes. Each trail I rode was accurately described. Each chapter also contains boxes describing the fauna (animals) and flora (plants) you'll likely encounter within each park.

This book isn't just a cycling guide, it contains virtually all the information you'll need to plan your trip. Story concludes each chapter with information about local lodging, camping, bike shops, grocery stores, and restaurants (his recommendations are first rate). He also provides helpful contacts (park visitors centers, etc.) which should be able to provide any other information you might need. Story has also eliminated the extraneous elements so many other cycling guidebooks seem to contain (elevation maps might be visually enticing, but let's face it, they aren't necessary).

What is really remarkable about this book is Story's terse, engaging writing. The abundance of information this book contains is presented in readable, often witty language. He doesn't just describe, he gives the reader a feel for each park and the surrounding communities (when applicable). Unlike most guidebooks I've read (which usually contain flat, predictable humor), Story's humor actually works; it isn't "laugh-out-loud" funny, but wry, witty humor that always relates to and never detracts from the subject matter.

The only improvement I would suggest for future editions is to provide a general map of each National Park. The trail maps only feature a small segment of the park where the trail is located. It is sometimes impossible to decipher where each trail is located within the entire park itself. This is particularly difficult for visitors not familiar with the area (like me). It was sometimes impossible to tell from the maps where the most convenient place to stay (closest lodging to the trails) is. The next edition should provide a map showing where each trail is located relative to the entire park. Before visiting a park, you should obtain a complete map from the National Park Service (Story does tell where to obtain these).

Story has set high standards with this guidebook, the first in the "Bicycling America's National Parks" series. It's the kind of book you'll enjoy reading even if you don't plan to hit the trails anytime soon. Story's writing is so engaging that finishing the 300-pages is effortless (300 pages may sound long, but it really isn't). This book is a must read for any cyclists interested in visiting the National Parks of California. I can't wait to read the subsequent guidebooks for other states.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide and an even better read!.......2000-09-30

This book must be the first of its kind--a guidebook about bicycling in the national parks. The author shows that the common misperception that bicycling is not allowed off-road in national parks is just that-- a misperception. This book features some outstanding road rides as well as mountain bike rides. I think the descriptions of the parks themselves and the rides therein are well-written and clear. The author gives the kind of information you'd want to know before setting off on a ride, and does it in a colorful, sometimes very deadpan funny way. There's also some cool trivia about the parks and good, useful information about where to buy supplies, repair your bike, do laundry, take showers, camp, and other stuff like that. I think this is a book that shows you how to take part in the most fun sport in the world (bicycling) and do it in some of the most spectacular places in the world (the national parks of California). A must for any travelers to the national parks who want to get out of their cars and explore. (By the way: it's not just for hardcore bicyclists--there are numerous family and beginner-level rides as well.)

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the market.......2006-01-07

I'm a professor at a large state university. On the rare occasions when I teach this course, I always order the Edmonds book.

I believe the purpose of introductory or fundamental financial accounting is to teach students how to read and use finanacial statements. If used properly by the instructor, this is one of only two books on the market (the other is for MBA students) that can be used for this purpose.

I whole-heartedly endorse the horizontal model used by Edmonds, et. al. Most text book writers use a form of it. I even use it in my writings.

Some students want to learn debits and credits. In my opinion, this is best left to technical courses in accounting for those interested in the nuts and bolts.

However, for anyone who want to get something long-lasting from the course, this text book combined with the right professor, will be about the only option.

If this or any text book is used to teach technical aspects at the fundamental level, you won't have a good experience. Techinical aspects are best covered in Intermediate Accounting.

1 out of 5 stars Better download the PowerPoint®.......2005-08-01

This text is abysmal. It is riddled with errors and omissions, gives incomplete examples, and presents information unsequentially. It relies too much and for too long on the horizontal model without practical applicatoin to journals and statements. If your college uses this text (as Medaille College and Finger Lakes Community College currently do) run away!

Fortunately, many of the gaps are filled in by the PowerPoint® presentations they make available on their support site: http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072472960/student_view0/ Note that these presentations are more extensive than the ones on the Topic Tackler CD that comes with the book. You must download these presentations if you want to have a chance with this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good book with the right instructor.......2002-08-02

I've read the reviews stating that this is a confusing book. I disagree completely. Although the author does not immediately delve into traditional T-accounts, the introduction of the "horizontal model" serves as a good foundation for building the awareness of the accounting equation that should be second nature BEFORE tackling T-accounts. The text's preface states: "A horizontal financial statements model replaces the accounting equation as the predominant teaching platform. The model enables students to VISUALIZE THE SIMULTANEOUS EFFECTS OF A SINGLE BUSINESS EVENT on the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows." I felt as though this methodology was very effective for my learning style. Recording transactions in T-accounts came almost as second nature after mastering the horizontal model.

The "Working Papers" (a separate workbook) makes doing the assigned problems easy by providing a ready-made template for each problem. If you've had to draw your own T-accounts or your own journal in a notebook before, you will definitely appreciate this.

This text serves as a good introduction to the skills necessary to master financial accounting.

1 out of 5 stars Most Confusing Accounting Textbook On The Market Today........2000-10-27

This Book begins using something called horizontial statments and then in chapter 5 switches to regular T accounts thus confusing students completely, I have yet to find a student that tells me the book is easy to understand or useful. It would be helpful if there was a solutions manual. Our school will change books next semester. It's not even good enough to make dorm furniture.

5 out of 5 stars Great college companion!.......2000-10-20

This book is an excellent book to go with a Financial Accounting course. Everything is laid out in plain English, and shows you in diagrams and models exactly how each kind of transaction works. I recommend for professors everywhere to adopt this book for their clases. I'm glad mine did!

                    Product Description

Story of Miss Ima who gave back to Texas more than Texas gave to her. She was a \"Grande Lady\" and one that Texas and the United State of America can be very proud. Because of her, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts has one of the greatest collections of American furniture and furnishings. Because of her, Houston has a fine symphony orchestra. Because of her, there are great programs in Houston for the mentally ill. She did not become known for her name Ima Hogg, but as a great woman of Texas.

If you really want to learn about ovulation charting and shooting for a certain gender this book is too simplistic. Buy "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and truly educate yourself on your cycles. I was so dissappointed in this book that this is the first review I have ever written.

Very quick read! I read it all in ten mins Theres 31 pages and the text is big. We are going to try to use this method The Shettles Method. I have done other research on this Method. Which most you can find Googling Shettles Method. Overall i enjoyed this book It got right down to the point. But if your really serious about Choosing the gender I suggest you do some more research!

Knowledge of medical obstetrics has advanced to the point where prospective parents can improve the odds of conceiving the desired gender of baby by following natural methods, as explained in How To Make A Baby Girl Or Baby Boy, the collaborative work of Doctor Mark More and his wife, pediatric nurse Lisa More. When followed properly, the methods are estimated to give 80/20 odds of the desired gender, rather than the usual 50/50. The key to the methods lies in the differences between X-sperm and Y-sperm; X-sperm live longer but Y-sperm are faster, so methods for female conception involved sexual congress a few days before ovulation (giving the Y-sperm time to die off) and making the woman's interior more hostile to sperm, while the methods for male conception are the opposite. The techniques in How To Make A Baby Girl Or Baby Boy do not cost money, or require a doctor's supervision beyond the expenses or necessary medical supervision of any pregnancy. A disclaimer warns that the methods are not guarantees, and further, not all the techniques are recommended for couples who are having a difficult time conceiving; some may even hinder fertility to a degree. The simple instructions and line drawings leave no room for confusion is this useful guide.

                    2 out of 5 stars Simple Read.......2005-08-01

This was a very simple read, almost too simple. I was looking for a more in-depth read and this wasn't it. The info I read in this book may be helpful to those who are learning this stuff for the first time but for those of you looking to expand on information you already have, I would pass on this book. It is very sophomoric in writing and in illustration too.

1 out of 5 stars Cute for the not-so-serious.......2005-07-21

I ordered this book along with the gold standard "How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby," and can hardly think of making a comparison between the two. My husband and I have a son and very much want a daughter. We are responsible people who realistically can only afford to have two children in this day and age and, given the opportunity, would like to try for a girl. (We would also consider ourselves blessed to have another child of either sex, as we do for the son we have.)

This book was great for a laugh, but for someone who is serious about trying for a baby of a specific gender, don't waste your money. My husband read it in the ten minutes (or less) it took and declared it a waste - both of information and money. It contains less information than you can find out with a quick internet search - and with the "diagrams" it reminds me more of something I would use to tell me 19 month old how to choose the sex of his baby - ha ha ha.

Buy this one for a laugh and the real Shettles method book if you are really trying!

                                    Book Description

The Durham Liber Vitae (London, British Library, MS Cotton Domitian A. vii) is one of seven surviving libri memoriales from the Carolingian period, and the only English example of its date. The book, which has been notably little studied, contains several thousand names of persons associated with a Northumbrian church, probably Lindisfarne, but possibly Monkwearmouth/Jarrow. From around 1100, it was used to record the names of all Durham monks, as well as of many lay people; family groups also appear, especially the families of the last monks before Henry VIII dissolved the cathedral monastery in 1539. It casts considerable light on how the church interacted with contemporary lay and ecclesiastical society and in the process illuminates the basis of the church's position and its role in defining related communities and regions. Studies cover all aspects of the manuscript, its content and its context.
