Book Description
Throughout the course of the Second World War in the Pacific, one hundred times as many U.S. servicemen were disabled by disease rather than as a result of hostile action with the Japanese. One of the deadliest diseases encountered was malaria--a vector borne disease that even today kills as many as 3 million people worldwide every year. It is the war against malaria, along with the impact it had on military operations and personnel, that provides the backdrop for the story of Bob Michel and his time with the "Skeeter Beaters"--a small unit of U.S. Navy entomologists, doctors, and Pharmacist Mates whose efforts directly impacted the outcome of the war in the Pacific.
This is the war in the South Pacific as it really happened--the day-to-day struggles with disease, twelve-inch poisonous centipedes, poisonous snakes, starvation and the unrelenting Japanese forces.
With a renewed interest in the Second World War and the 60th Anniversary of the Guadalcanal campaign, "Skeeter Beaters" provides a unique look at a small piece of our history heretofore never detailed. After experiencing the Pacific War of Bob Michel and the Skeeter Beaters, one may likely say, "I never knew that before?."
Customer Reviews:
niche coverage of WWII.......2003-06-25
WWII is a fascinating subject. From the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact, to Germany's secret missile program, to the Manhattan project, the era is packed full of fascinating and often horrific stories of innovation. The story told by Skeeter Beaters is an example of the fascinating. What's great about Skeeter Beaters is that this is a story I hadn't heard before. There's no movie starring John Wayne or Tom Hanks, and not many bullets screaming over the head of the protagonist. Nonetheless, this is a story that should be told. As the editorial review already says, the US was losing many more men to disease than to combat with the Japanese. The US Navy showed good old American innovation by putting a team together assigned to fight the problem. This is the story of that team, and I'm happy that it has been told.
I NEVER KNEW THAT.......2003-03-13
ONCE YOU START TO READ THE BOOK, YOU CAN'T PUT IT DOWN. tHE MEDIC SHOOTING THE JAP IN THE HEAD AFTER TREATING HIM FOR HIS INJURIES. THE FACT THAT OUR (U.S.A.) ENTIRE SUPPLY OF QUININE WAS LOST WHEN THE SHIP CARRYING IT WAS SUNK BY THE JAPS. THE FACT THAT THE MEN ON GUADALCANAL HAD VERY LITTLE FOOD OR SUPPLIES. THIS TRULY IS A BOOK THAT SHOULD BE READ BY EVERYONE.

The committee approach.......2000-05-17
This is a book which, despite being written by a committee and showing it, has a definite point of view. It is somewhat superficial, but contains a fairly good review of the literature on medical error and some definite ideas about what to do. This is the book for policy wonks who are interested both in health care and in government intervention. Those looking for more in-depth treatment of the subject would do well to consider Human Error in Medicine, edited by Marilyn Sue Bogner.
Everyone should read this book.......2000-05-16
This eye opening book exposes the dangers of the medical health care system in the United States. Tens of thousands of people die and are injured every year due to doctors' errors, administrative foul ups, misdiagnoses, and incorrect prescriptions. The book gives general solutions for the system as a whole and advice to the individual to help you protect yourself when you are being treated by a doctor or hospital.
My spouse is a Medical Malpractice attorney and you would not believe the frequency of tragic and catastophic errors made by health care providers that change and end people's lives unnecessarily. It can happen to anyone without warning. Protect yourself and purchase this book today for a no nonsense look at the system you may one day depend on to save your life.

Book Description
Charles Baker has created what is perhaps the greatest armchair drinking book of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Classic, but a word of caution.......2007-02-26
Many of the recipes in this book vary considerably from how the drink of the same name is prepared today. The author often calls for ingredients which can no longer be procured, but that is to be expected. For the serious cocktail enthusiast, this book is a must-have, and this inexpensive reprint means you won't want to kill yourself if you spill grenadine on it.
The previous person to review this book makes a good point, too. This is not simply a formula book of recipes, but THAT is exactly what makes it a great read. Another perfect example of this is "Cocktail Recipes from the Nineteenth Century - The Flowing Bowl", by Spencer (another recent reprint of a rare old cocktail book.)
The Gentleman's Companion.......2003-11-26
It should be noted first, that this book is a faithful reprint (all except the title and cover :-) of the classic "The Gentleman's Companion", first published in 1939. That first edition came as a two book set: "Exotic Drink Book", and "Exotic Cookery Book". The former is the book here in question, the latter has been likewise reprinted under the title "Knife, Fork, and Spoon : Eating Around the World".
If you are expecting the same old "wad-o-drinks" type of book here, then you will be quite surprised in what you find. Mr. Baker has a dry wit, as well as a cunning charm about him. And he exercises it well as he relates to his readers the various drinks that he has collected through his travels and adventures. The recipes often consist of more prose then raw ingredients, which makes them both more interesting to browse through but at the same time slightly more difficult to work from.
For a taste of his style, here is just one of the drink recipes from this book:
SANTIAGO NIGHTCAP, from a STAY in SANTIAGO de CUBA,
in the EARLY SPRING of 1930
------This is another favour passed along to this field
representative and wine tester by the late Senor Facuno
Bacardi, it being his primary thought to donate something
to woo sleep and restore the slightly frayed physical
assembly. It is a simple drink, and would also make a
fine picker-upper. . . . Take 1 1/2 jiggers of Gold
Seal Bacardi rum, add 1 pony of orange curaco and the
yolk of 1 egg. Shake hard with cracked ice and strain
into a large saucer champagne glass.
While the formatting of these recipes may make it a bit more difficult to glean direct recipes from them, they do present a provocative and insightfull snapshot of the cocktail world of those days. Few books, before or since, have even approached this wonderfully eclectic performance.
I highly recommend this book for anybody who has an interest in classic cocktails.

Book Description
A healthy dose of nonsense from the Caldecott medalist
Uri Shulevitz has taken on the tricky task of weaving several nonsensical stories together into one picture book, and the result is both magical and hilarious. Set in the empire of Pickleberry, which boasts a population of 26 1/2 citizens, the tales revolve around a parrot named Lou, the emperor, his twin brother the janitor/ambassador, a traveling salesman, and a bear who loses his tail as a result of an earthquake caused when the invisible half-citizen of Pickleberry dropped a saucer. Confused? That's the point. But behind the delightful absurdity are a few dollops of wisdom. Incorporating collage in his buoyant pictures, Uri Shulevitz continues to show himself as one of the major innovators and most talented author/illustrators in the field of children's books.
Customer Reviews:
High praise from a lover of all things silly.......2003-10-25
The little gnomish people on the front cover encouraged me to open it up, and I was pleasantly rewarded with a tale that is as engaging as the colorful illustrations. The tale is indeed silly, with a few tales of its own tucked inside. I liked the way that Shulevitz didn't villainify the emperor - I find that most children's books have a clearly defined "bad" and "good," and Shulevitz allows children to see the traditional "bad guy" character as a person who has some flaws rather than evil incarnate. Great imaginative use of words. Most importantly, this book answers the question that has plagued mankind for centuries: "If one had an itch on a Sunday at 3:16 in the afternoon, should one scratch with the third finger of the right hand or with the second finger of the left hand?" You'll have to read the book to find out what answer this wise bird gives.
Marvelous!.......2001-03-05
What do you get when you take a strange land called Pickleberry, inhabited by an emperor and his brother, the janitor, a very wise bird named Lou and Lou's, Aunt Millie, a half invisible man with half a large mustache, a traveling salesman and a bear who's lost his tail? Easy...a charming, creative, laugh-out-loud picture book by award winning author and illustrator, Uri Shulevitz. And Mr Shulevitz has done just about the impossible, woven three seemingly unrelated nonsensical stories together and made it work. His wonderfully absurd text, full of imagery, made-up words and wild, ridiculous events is only outdone by his truly inspired and magical artwork and youngsters will be mesmerized by the colorful, detailed, expressive illustrations. What is a Wise Bird Like You Doing in a Silly Tale Like This? is a very special story, really three special stories, that's perfect for children aged 4 and older. Uri Shulevitz never disappoints and he's not starting now!

Book Description
Contemporary and artistic approaches to crafting trendy felt-bead jewelry are offered in this comprehensive handbook filled with detailed instructions for novices and more advanced tips for seasoned fiber artists. Techniques for creating the felted equivalent of lampworked beads, turquoise focal beads, and mokume gane look-alikes are presented along with inspiring design possibilities. All aspects of the feltmaking process are detailed, such as handling special fibers, dyeing wool, and beading on felt, as well as what types of tools are needed. Step-by-step instructions walk feltmakers through the needle-felting and wet-feltmaking techniques—including flat and three-dimensional work, inclusions, and texture applications—that are used to create wearable works of art.
Customer Reviews:
Falls short of the mark.......2007-08-20
When you think jewelry-making materials, let's face it, handmade felt isn't going to appear high on many lists. We tend to think shiny and delicate. Felt is matte in finish and can be bulky. Of course, it has potential for jewelry - but design is crucial to achieving a contemporary look with broad appeal.
I'm a feltmaker and I love beading and polymer clay jewelry-making so I was eager to get my hands on this book ... but disappointed that it did not meet my expectations. The project samples aren't my cup of tea: I just wouldn't wear most of those items myself. The photography isn't great compared to other craft books I have and there are not enough step by step illustrations. Beginners will struggle with this book. I was perplexed that the round felt ball beads were needle-felted, with a vague reference to the wet feltmaking technique which is so popular for this particular item.
If you are a keen needle-felter then this book might appeal to you more than it did me. And while Carol Huber Cypher does present some good tips and innovative design ideas, my personal preference is for Candice Cooper's 'Felted Jewelry' book. (But hey - maybe there is room on your bookshelf for both!)
Wonderful designs and ideas......if you know how.......2007-03-29
I felt and have for years so I found this book wonderful. Beautiful ideas, covering everthing from brooches, earrings, belts, scarves, necklaces, beads and lariats, this last one in particular had several designs using a focal glass bead and creating a felt version of the glass bead, looked stunning! Gorgeous "botanical" pieces - loved the flowers and variations, accompanied by great photographs.
Huber Cypher uses lots of techniques to showcase the beads, such as beading and wiring and it is clear she loves to "borrow" from other traditional techniques such as mokume gane and lampwork to add beauty and diversity to the pieces. Natural beauty also features heavily with felted representations of natural gemstones. So, if you already know how to felt grab this book and you will be very happy.
If on the otherhand you are a complete beginner then there is a problem. The instructions are certainly minimalistic and the step by step process could be a lot clearer. The photos or drawings of steps are not nearly detailed enough, they are "still" showing you the objects used but not necessarily how to do it. (Try Candice Cooper's Felted Jewelry for a better technical explanation).
Overall though I would still buy this book and I recommend it to my mixed media students, even if you are just starting out the projects are delicious and certainly what you can aspire to in your journey with felt.
Needs more instructional photos.......2006-09-29
This book has some really nice and inspiring projects to do, but for anyone who has never worked with felting, but wants to, it is very hard to visualize the process. Step by step photos would be a big help. Otherwise, it's just frustrating.
Just need a little more.......2006-09-13
photos and descriptions of the sample art are wonderful - very inspiring. and very frustrating - diagrams or pictures of the felting process would be helpful. I just can't envision what is being described but I guess I just need to leap on in...
Yum, Yum!!.......2006-04-26
I got my book last night and had to force myself not to stay up all night reading!! Today, I had the fun of carefully reading thru the whole book. Tonight, I'll get a felting needle! I can't wait to start my projects. The pictures are wonderful, artistic and informative. The introduction is not a history of felting per se but just enough to let you know you are trying an art form that is both ancient and modern. Her color sense for the projects is great and the items look so tactile and sensuous. Having done some felting in the past, it was delightful to see Carol combine lampwork beads and seed beads into the projects to give the items a sense of modern elegance. Not a huge reference section but enough to satisfy the beginner. A book I know I will refer to again and again.

OK, so those days of wine, roses, and boundless lust are just a bit of dusty memory, off in the hinterland of youth, before kids, stress, and that most deadly foe of romance--routine--derailed the passion. Sex experts Pepper Schwartz and Janet Lever offer no magical elixirs of youth, just a weekend guide to re-ignited love, road-tested by diligent researchers, with specifics on how to partake of a weekend away that's devoted to recovering intimacy and the pleasures of the flesh. Plan your getaway together and fantasize about it; declare a moratorium on work talk and focus on one another; break old patterns and experiment with new techniques (all delineated in the book). Age may not be a state of mind, but good sex certainly is, and it's a state that can be recaptured.--Stephanie Gold

Planning the setting--home or away
Sensuous clothing, food, and toys

The most romantic getaway places
Customer Reviews:
Didn't really teach us anything new.......2007-09-10
This book is alright for people that haven't had sex in over 6 months but it didn't really teach me and my husband much. It is mostly about setting a mood and things to buy, which most people already know. The only helpful tip was to get a blue light for your bedroom.
Best way to re-jump-start your intimate relationship.......2004-02-21
I'm a therapist who's worked with a lot of couples and this is a common complaint - the spark is missing, sex is routine or doesn't happen enough, or one person is tired of always being the initiator. As long as there are no serious marital problems, this is a great approach - it really is a big boost to intimacy, and a lot more fun than the mostly "in your head" exercises in most books on rekindling desire. It's also kind of neat to plot the weekend together without family or friends knowing what you're up to. That by itself helps to strengthen the intimate boundary around the two of you. And yes, we did "road-test" the book, and it really did have a lasting effect on our relationship. Just the anticipation was enough to put us onto a different level. And afterward, we continued to be a lot more open with each other about what we like, and have been more daring and willing to try new things than ever before in our 28 years of marriage. Don't worry if you don't have the energy to do all of what they suggest, or get the order all changed around. The main thing is to make your mutual pleasure your only priority. And that carries over quite nicely into your everyday life. Also, don't worry if you have a hard time getting used to giving constant feedback to each other - that's a skill that it's hard to develop in one weekend - but it's also a good reason to schedule more weekends at regular intervals. This book can be the best gift you could ever give your partner, because just giving the book sends the message that you want your relationship to be kicked up a notch, and it does it without doing any criticizing or complaining - since any couple can get bored or busy, your partner is a lot less likely to feel defensive. (Saying it's for "bored or busy" people is a great way to make it more palatable, just like the "for dummies" series did). It's now on my small shelf of top books to recommend to clients, no matter how long they've been together, or what age they may be.
WOW!.......2001-05-09
I'm only 18, but this book truly applies to all ages and all walks of life! Finally, an author who stresses foreplay and romance, not just sex. My cousin says Schwartz's son is the best lover she's ever experienced, so I know it must be genetic! The book was great; my fiance and I truly enjoyed each and EVERY detail.
2 busy, 2 tired, 2 stressed? Find 2 days.......2001-05-08
Like many who've been married for decades, sex became a back-burner item. Stresses of work, kids, community and everyday life meant no time. We talked about missing our love life, but found little chance to do anything about it.
This book helped us put things into perspective. We took a long weekend. We got back in touch with each other. We put a lot of joy back into the relationship.
If you're in love, but not making love, get this book and follow its suggestions. You'll be glad you did.
chocolate chips.......2001-01-09
I really enjoyed this book. Great for people in relationships, as some of the instruction books are either too technical or too geared at just the act. This is a great guide for setting the romantic tone, destressing, and reigniting the sensuous feelings that got you togther in the first place. It has a checklist of goodies to bring or get like candles, music, feathers, etc. This is a great resource if you have the passion in your relationship but other things, like work or school :) get in the way. What I like is that the author's focus on relaxing, no work talk, etc. I highly recommend this book for couples. The title should say great romantic sex weekend, b/c that's what we had. P.S. I recommend chocolate chips and candles at the very least ;) and have a great weekend
Book Description
Working with Mr Wright. is a personal recollection by one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s former apprentices of his years at the Taliesin Fellowship. Curtis Besinger provides a lively account of daily life in this community of architects established by Wright in Wisconsin and Arizona. An apprenticeship with the Fellowship entailed architectural tasks, such as drafting, designing, and overseeing projects, including the actual building of Taliesin West; as well as humbler assignments - from milking the cows to harvesting wheat - related to maintaining the farm that surrounds the Fellowship in Wisconsin. The social life of the Fellowship, filled with music and film, and planned in detail by Wright himself, is also recounted with wit and humor. Through these engaging recollections, illustrated with photographs, plans, and drawings made during Besinger’s years at the Fellowship, Wright’s eccentric personality, his working practices, and his unique creative vision emerge, along with a host of personalities who contributed to the unique Taliesin experience.

A True Story.......2000-12-07
Why didn't I read this book when it first came out? It is a very well written book from a true "insider" at Taliesin. Besinger does what he says and tells it like it was, from his personal experience. It gives a wonderful look inside the forbidden city, one that is often enhanced and usually turns out to be a lauditory biography of Mr. Wright. Here is a real narrative in the best sense of the word. Besinger does not interpret he just tells what he knows and also does not speculate on what he does not see. It is the best insight to date on the evolving process that went on in Taliesin. Besinger worked on most of the important projects and gives us the process as well as the result. I am very glad he took the time to write so well and include the detail that carries it through. One only wishes for more.
