A wonderful book.......2003-10-18
This amazing book will hold the attention of anyone who is interested in dogs, Anthropology, and the fascinating partnership between dogs and humans in many different cultures and climates. It shows how dogs have adapted to Geographical conditions, to cultural expectations, and how time and again dogs have literally kept humans alive in our struggle for survival. The relationship between dogs and humans, even working dogs like the greenland Huskies, are often cemented by affection on both sides, no matter if the dogs are not "pets". The photos are absolutly beautiful, the descriptions fascinating, and even though the text was translated into English and suffers some awkwardness in word choice in a few places, this does not detract from the book- I though it added to the uniqueness and charm.
In this book, dogs act as "guides" so to speak in an exploration of many exotic locations, interesting people, and diverse lifestyles. All I can say is "wow!- even people who are not "dog people" like this book if they are interested in travel and different cultures.
Take a step back in time.......2000-08-20
I agree that the title of this book does not do it justice, but the subtitle does. It's written like a series of National Geographic articles as they explore the role of dogs in somewhat primitive cultures around the world. Beautiful photos, great read, lousy title! I own hundreds of dog books; this is a favorite.
A journey in understanding the history of some noble breeds........1999-10-09
The title of this book doesn't do as much justice as the subtitle. What a wonderful tribute to some lesser known breeds. I found their histories with man fascinating, and the photos excellent. I heartily recommend this book to true dog enthusiasts. What I found most valuable about this book is the information about man's influence on the developement of the featured breeds. The photos of the dogs in their homelands are a history lesson in themselves.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this book, but was pleasantly impressed immediately with the extreme high quality prints contained within! This should be billed more like a coffee table book, but the information it shares is too good to pidgeonhole as a picture book. I'd class this as a class act entry level book for detailed directions @ starting the process of growing veggies and plants in their infancy. The only negative I'd comment on is that I wish it was bigger. Its hard to cover it all with just one book though.

Just what I've Desperately Needed!!.......2004-08-02
If you don't feel closeness with your child, can't get them to open up even with the kindest efforts, feel like you can't imagine why your relationship isn't good because of all the love you give, and your child would rather spend time with the computer than with you, and they won't listen to you....YOU NEED THIS! I was able to understand instantly the unintentional messages I have been sending! I've read MANY parenting books, never have the results been so immediate--almost magic, and so simple to understand and use. In four days, while still reading, I used/practiced the techniques described--and my 15 year old has responded with profound openess and helpfulness. Because I am respecting his needs as a person (and have learned how to comunicate this), he is in turn respecting my needs! Brilliant! Buy it at ANY cost!!
A Must Read for All Parents.......2002-06-03
I believe all parents or would be parents should have a copy of this book. It would be a great baby shower gift. Helps you understand yourself and children, and actually makes you like yourself and children. I can't say enough on this book. It brings the best out in you, and also makes you feel like you are not the only parent on earth who goes through tough times in your home raising kids. The book was written over thirty years ago but still works in this day. I use the skills almost all the time with my daughter who is fifteen and I have had the most conversation I have ever had with her since applying the skills the book suggested. Truly the most effective book on parenting I have ever read.

I read this book in a communications class in junior college. I do not have kids, but it is the foundation of the way I relate to people and to my students. So many people do not know how to talk with others without blaming. This book shows you how to own your power and let others have theirs, too.

Tom Gordon's communication and problem solving based approach to raising children is undoubtedly one of the most powerful aids ever devised. The book alone is not enough. Communication and solving problems is behavior and it has to be learned and practiced.

To anyone who admires and enjoys the informative images of Paul Hogarth this book is an absolute must ! I personally bought this book as a valuable guide for an aspiring illustrator such as myself. We all aware that this man is a genius when it comes to interpreting places around the world. This book allows us to follow his foot steps in achieveing his goals in a colourful exciting read.
The book includes images that Hogarth has created all around the world through his many visits abroad.
