      Book Description

Eucalypts make up a remarkable genus as the dominant trees of Australia. This authoritative volume provides current reviews by active researchers in many disciplines, including evolutionary history, genetics, distribution and modeling, the relationship of eucalypts to fire and nutrients, ecophysiology, pollination and reproductive ecology, interactions between eucalypts and other coexisting biota as well as conservation and management. Together these reviews explore the reasons for the great success of eucalypts in Australian environments, providing a comprehensive summary for comparison with the ecology of major woody plant genera in other continents.

        Description:
Earthworm relationships with vegetation have received extensive attention, and earthworm density has been shown to be related to vegetation types or plant species. However, the factors involved are rarely known. In Congo, we studied the effect of Chromolaena odorata (L) R.M. King & H. Robinson, which invades eucalypt plantations, on soil invertebrates, especially earthworms. In order to investigate relationships between vegetation cover and soil invertebrates, four understory species, including C. odorata, were studied. Also, comparisons were made between plots invaded by C. odorata and plots free from it. The addition of leaf litter on experimental plots was made in order to check its influence. Plant remains were observed in the digestive tract of earthworms. An increased earthworm density was observed under C. odorata. The leaf litter and roots of this species had low lignin/N ratio. The size of leaf fragments found in the digestive tract of the earthworms, and the lack of short-term effect of experimentally added leaf litter, suggested that litter quality could influence earthworm through their feeding on fine particulate top soil organic matter. The amount of soil aggregates, in the size classes that fitted the size range of earthworm casts, was increased under C. odorata. More field experiments are needed to establish a causal effect in the relationships observed between earthworm density and C. odorata. If so, the major drawbacks, such as water and nutrient competition, resulting from C. odorata overrunning the plantations, could be somewhat offset by its positive effects through soil improvement.

4 out of 5 stars the miracle of space and time.......2000-06-02

"Australia -journey of a timeless land" is a great book about a surely great land. The texts by roff smith present all the territories of the continent, góing from the north to the west coast, the southern vineyards to the eastcoast. Smith writes about the historical development, the social and political status quo, every time in a interesting way, often using a personal point of view, areporters point of view. The aborigines-tragedy has room as has the cruels of Tasmanias prisons of the 18th Century Really marvellous and overwhelming are the photographs of national-geographic stuff-member sam abell. Great landscapes, the special light of morning or evening gives the land a structure. Abell is able to bring the feeling of space on a simple sheet. And he captures with his mostley wide-angle optics decessif moments, where time and space meet at an certain point. And I think, time and space, open space are specific for Australia, that i have not ever visited. Sam Abell is a great artist, more than a photojournalist. You should read his "stay this moment"-book also. This australia-book is worth every dolllar.

This is one of the 2 books that fills in all the details of Elliott Wave research and history in the time period between Elliott himself and today's Robert Prechter. The other book is the Complete Elliott Wave Writings of A. Hamilton Bolton.
In short, this book is a very necessary addition to any serious student of Elliott and Socionomics. It takes you through the history of great market calls as well as providing insight into how the knowledge of Elliott Wave has gotten to be where it is today.

                          Book Description

During the Second World War, Mary Denyer and her young son John lived in a small thatched cottage in Suffolk, England. While the war blazed around them, they immersed themselves in the wildlife of the woods, and their cottage became the home to a succession of wounded and orphaned animals. A charming, unforgettable memoir of a world within a world and a love of wildlife undimmed by time.

It's full of interesting and beautiful sweaters and even socks. The modules can be put together in many creative ways for unusual color effects. But I bought it because the design tips in "Domino Knitting" by V. Hoxbro are too vague. Ginger Luters is a bit vague too, but she does have graph paper. The only way to design is make a swatch, measure it, make drawings and calculations, and dive in. The sweater is still in progress but is coming along just fine. I'm in my 50's and wouldn't mind wearing any of the women's sweaters in Luters' book, especially "De Colores". Brilliant and vibrant yet tasteful.

It is indeed magic and a delightful innovation to tempt long-time knitters. These authors have brought this technique alive within the knitting community and this beautiful book is as a good a place to start as any. A few things you need to know - (the K.I.S.S. rule of Keep it simple) modules are easy and fun to make but they extend the time a project takes - maybe even by double. Also, this book presents too many riches for the beginning knitter, who can come away believing this is too complex to master. As with any new technique, everyone can learn this technique and most will love it, providing you pick one of their easier projects and keep it simple until you learn the properties of the modules: e.g. they don't all end up exactly the same size even if you are careful to check gauge, properties of different yarns will change not only the size but the 'squareness' of modules, you can't substitute yarns and stitches unless you do swatches. To their credit, the authors of course advise you to check gauge, do swatches, etc. but they don't give one piece of advice needed to prevent heartache: do a simple project or two before attempting the mouthwatering, expensive, and complex beauties in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Dated, but of interest to garden historians..........2000-12-08

                            E. A. Bowles book, MY GARDEN IN SUMMER, is part of a several part series of books he wrote describing his garden at Myddelton England during his tenure in the early part of the 20th Century.

I bought this book because I enjoyed books written by Beverly Nichols, an English writer who moved to the countryside after WWII and rebuilt the garden surrounding an old house. Nichols has the help of an excentric gardener, and all sorts of adventures with his cats and kooky maiden neighbors. I thought Mr. Bowles would prove to be another Brit gardener with a wry sense of humour but he is not -- at least in this book.

I am also a fan of Elizabeth Lawrence, a horticulturist with the N.C. State government who practiced her craft in the latter part of the 20th Century, beginning in the 1940s. Ms Lawrence referred to Mr. Bowles books in her own books. I love Ms. Lawrence writing because she not only provides the scientific particulars of each plant, she shares the gardening experiences relayed to her via her correspondance -- with Mr. Howdyshel in Ohio and gardeners in other parts of the country. Ms. Lawrence also provides the reader with many anectdotal bits about the plants, as well as the history of the plant. Ms. Lawrence is factual, sometimes amusing though not funny, and I find her books entertaining.

If MY GARDEN IN SUMMER is a fair sample of Mr. Bowles writing, his book will appeal to no one but the avid historical garden enthusiast with an in-depth knowledge of plants and curiostity about another gardener's experiences with various plants at different times in the last century. Or, someone who intends to visit Myddleton Garden in England, or has visited it might enjoy the book. Being able to see the real thing often helps, and the gardens are being restored--probably why the book was republished.

Mr. Bowles book contains a dozen or so black and white photos of mixed quality. For some reason, about half of them appear in the section he wrote on sedums and succulents. One photo in particular is very pretty, showing a long terrace with about 30-40 pots of various succulents. I'd like a blow-up of that photograph for it's aesthetic properties. You won't be able to identify many of the succulents in the pots, however.

An appendix in the back of the book provides the reader with the current names of the plants Mr. Bowles discusses. In spite of this update, I found the sections of greatest interest to me a bit deficient. On my next visit to England, I will visit Myddleton Garden, and then I'll reread the book -- or sections of it. That should help me better appreciate it.

Oft quoted but seldom credited,Charles Dudley Warner’s My Summer in a Garden is a classic of American garden writing and was a seminal early work in the then fledgling genre of American nature writing. Warner—prominent in his day as a writer and newspaper editor—was a dedicated amateur gardener who shared with Mark Twain, his close friend and neighbor, a sense of humor that remains deliciously fresh today.

In monthly dispatches, Warner chronicles his travails in the garden, where he and his cat, Calvin, seek to ward off a stream of interlopers, from the neighbors’ huge-hoofed cows and thieving children, to the reviled, though “propagatious,” pusley weed. To read Warner is to join him on his rounds of his beloved vegetable patch, to feel the sun on his sore back, the hoe in his blistered hands, and yet, like him, never to lose sight of “the philosophical implications of contact with the earth, and companionship with gently growing things.”

This Modern Library edition is published with an extensive new Introduction by Allan Gurganus, author of Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All and The Practical Heart.

The love of dirt is among the earliest of passions, as it is the latest. Mud-pies gratify one of our first and best instincts. So long as we are dirty, we are pure. Fondness for the ground comes back to a man after he has run the round of pleasure and business, eaten dirt, and sown wild-oats, drifted about the world, and taken the wind of all its moods.

                                  Product Description

In 2003, My Little Pony collectors had something to celebrate as Hasbro reintroduced their beloved brand of brightly colored ponies for a third time. For collectors, this third generation (commonly called G3) has not only recreated the thrill of the hunt, but also offered a chance to pass the hobby of collecting down to the next generation.

Summer Hayes has compiled the first guide to these new MLP items, complete with hundreds of full color photos of all ponies, accessories and playsets both with and without their packaging. With in depth coverage of each MLP item released since 2003 until today, online sellers or collectors will find on each page not only detailed photos for easy identification, but also handy checklists to keep track of accessories and other items that originally came with each set.

Covering all sets, variants, and special offers throughout the My Little Pony Celebration, Friendship Ball, Butterfly Island, and Crystal Princess sets, The My Little Pony G3 Collector s Inventory is designed to assist the collector of any age or experience level to identify, organize and complete their collection!

5 out of 5 stars My Little Pony Guide: Complete, User-Friendly, and Fun Fun Fun.......2007-08-23

This inventory is a toy collector (or kid's dream) come true! Each page is full of high quality, colored pictures with the name and description of the ponies IN YEAR ORDER of when they came out. A picture of the new in box ponies of EACH one is also featured at the bottom of the page!

This guide also feautres EVERY pony and My Little Pony piece from 2003-2007 when the book was published- If your little girl (or boy) loves the ponies, you would be at a loss to not purchase this book for them.

Can't afford to buy or purchase every pony out there? Well this would make a great addition to the pony collection and doesn't take up as much space and money as owning all the ponies!

5 out of 5 stars Book is a WONDERFUL tool to have for collectors!.......2007-08-06

The pictures are nice and glossy with excellent descriptions of each item. SO many pages from the past few years of all the pony toys and playsets and she provides checklists next to each item! I was personally excited about getting this book and was lucky to get to meet Summer in person and have her sign it for me. :) I highly recommend this book. I will definitely be using it for years to come. Thanks so much Summer for a fantastic product!

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC Resource for G3 Collectors!.......2007-06-22

This book is DEFINITELY worth it if you collect the current release My Little Ponies. Everything is very organized, with pictures of the different ponies both in their original packaging and removed from the box. Some even have detailed Cutie Mark pictures. There are notes about special European released items and the peculiar Mexican and Brazilian ponies, as well as those available for general distribution worldwide.

The only error I caught was a picture mix-up involving Fancy Hair ponies Royal Beauty and Rainbow Treat on page 112. Other than that, everything was perfect!

It is a fabulous paper resource to organize and catalogue one's collection.

This could also make a very good gift for children who like the My Little Pony toys, due to the pictures and interesting information, but beware--they could fall in love with one of the RARE ponies like Rosey Posey! ;) Of course, perhaps that would create a budding collector!

I can't wait to see a second or third edition as the My Little Pony line continues! Heaps of thanks to Summer Hayes for taking the time to get this guide together!

5 out of 5 stars just got it today!!!!.......2007-06-22

this books even better than i thought it would be. my sister and i collect all these ponies since they came out in stores and we didn't know which ones we were missing. my mom wants us to sell them so we got this book so we could figure out what went with what because everything is all messed up and mixed up lol. this book is good for that because it tells you what comes with each pony and all their names and that stuff. The pics are all really nice and the whole book is in color with pictures of all the ponies both and in out of their boxes so its nice to just look at them. its a really big book , you could totally hit someone with and do some damage lol.if you love my little pony, this book is really fun!

                                          Book Description

Warner was an American essayist in the late 1800's. This volume contains two works. In My Summer in a Garden Warner strays from the usual how-to book. He gives helpful gardening advice, but his humor and serious talk about plant life gives the reader lessons in daily living. Calvin was a character in this book and a short memoir is added showing what an exemplary life he led and how his humble life is an example for us.

How to Raise a Lady is an invaluable resource for parents who hope their little girls will grow up to be the kind of women who know which fork to use, how to treat others, and will generally make their parents proud.

How to Raise a Lady focuses on real-life topics such as sleepovers; sex, religion, and politics; and saying "please" and "thank you." The book includes:

I was looking for true, refined etiquette here. This book was only stating the obvious. It is for someone who is starting from ground zero (don't run around yelling on an airplane, don't talk with your mouth full, say please and thank you.)I started to doubt the entire book once I read something like "a lady spits out her gum before she goes into the theatre" or something of that sort.
A true lady does not chew gum in the first place, it is considered crass. This book didn't even know that. I was disappointed.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-11-16

It pointed out a lot of great manners and discipline in a way that's not ordinarily easy to explain, and it's great for all ages.

4 out of 5 stars basic, but some items were "wake up" calls for me........2006-10-11

I grew up in a average middle class home 40 years ago and found most of this information to be common sense. The book did offer some suggestions on how to deal with specific issues, that I found helpfull. My daughter is grown. But my boyfriend has 2 small kids. I benifited most from points such as; teaching kids how to act when they invite a friend over (while the info was, to me, common sense, the book made me realize that I actually have to teach this stuff). I also liked all the reminders of how adult behavior impacts kids (if you want kids to show respect to adults or people in positions of authority is it smart for you to be disrespectful to our political leaders that you feel are doing a bad job?I know I often bad mouth them). This book helped me to think about what I want to teach (respect, honesty, caring) and how my daily actions can be seen by young minds.

5 out of 5 stars Do the World a Favor: Raise a Lady.......2006-06-17

We can't all be graduates or send the young girls in our lives to Miss Porter's School or luxurious finishing schools in Europe, but since children model their parents until they establish their own identity .... a few good manners is all it takes. A great book to help anyone with a young girl in their life be a positive role model and mentor. Being a lady opens alot of doors throughout one's life.

For generations, Thomas Eakins--whose famous paintings include "The Gross Clinic" and "The Champion Single Sculls"--has been regarded as a 19th-century American hero. In Eakins Revealed: The Secret Life of an American Artist, art historian Henry Adams offers a radically different view that allows us to better understand "the intensity and emotional desperation of Eakins' art." Eakins' brush with scandal--he was dismissed from his teaching post at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1886 for removing the loincloth from a male model posing for a class of women students--is generally described by admiring art historians as a brave attempt to modernize stuffy old rules. Adams reveals that the artist was a life-long exhibitionist who appears to have preyed on vulnerable young women. Drawing on the Bregler papers, a cache of revealing documents from Eakins' studio that surfaced in the mid-1980s, Adams describes a man whose sense of masculine identity was thwarted by a deep identification with his mentally ill mother and an inability to please his father. Reviewing the major Eakins studies, beginning with the landmark monograph by Lloyd Goodrich, Adams finds that many aspects of the artist's life were suppressed to establish him as an all-American hero.

Adams presents his case with the mesmerizing power of a star attorney-at-law, painting a detailed picture of the artist's troubled personal life before launching into correspondences between the life and the art. Although readers may question some of Adams' interpretations--whether of Freudian theory or the emotional effect of a specific painting--the author's direct, probing style makes Eakins Revealed as riveting as a courtroom drama. In his concluding arguments, Adams proposes that the subjects of Eakins' late portraits, almost uniformly pensive and hollow-eyed, are in fact multiple versions of the brooding artist himself. Ultimately, the author's new assessments endow Eakins' work with an anxiety about the body and gender roles--issues that preoccupy many artists of our own time. Readers new to Eakins may be disappointed to find only small, black-and-white reproductions of the works in this book, and a few of the works discussed (such as "Crucifixion") are not illustrated at all. But skeptical specialists will be pleased to see that Adams includes copious (and often fascinating) notes and a full bibliography. —-Cathy Curtis

                                            Book Description

Thomas Eakins is widely considered one of the great American painters, an artist whose uncompromising realism helped move American art from the Victorian era into the modern age. He is also acclaimed as a paragon of integrity, one who stood up for his artistic beliefs even when they brought him personal and professional difficulty--as when he was fired from the Pennsylvania Academy of Art for removing a model's loincloth in a drawing class. Yet beneath the surface of Eakins's pictures is a sense of brooding unease and latent violence--a discomfort voiced by one of his sitters who said his portrait "decapitated" her. In Eakins Revealed, art historian Henry Adams examines the dark side of Eakins's life and work, in a startling new biography that will change our understanding of this American icon. Based on close study of Eakins's work and new research in the Bregler papers, a major collection never fully mined by scholars, this volume shows Eakins was not merely uncompromising, but harsh and brutal both in his personal life and in his painting. Adams uncovers the bitter personal feuds and family tragedies surrounding Eakins--his mother died insane and his niece committed suicide amid allegations that Eakins had seduced her--and documents the artist's tendency toward psychological abuse and sexual harassment of those around him. This provocative book not only unveils new facts about Eakins's life; more important, it makes sense, for the first time, of the enigmas of his work. Eakins Revealed promises to be a controversial biography that will attract readers inside and outside the art world, and fascinate anyone concerned with the mystery of artistic genius.

                                            1 out of 5 stars A Shameless Trashing.......2006-07-02

The book is a swamp of innuendo and distortion and half-truths. Example: go look at a good color reproduction of Eakins' "William Rush Carving His Allegorical Figure of the Schuylkill River" and decide for yourself if the nude figure looks like a boy. Adams says it's the figure of a boy and proves Eakins' repressed homosexuality. Huh? Upon such unsupported assertions is this book built. And Eakins' famous "Swimming Hole"--yes, the painting celebrates the young male body, and childless Eakins was like a father for some of his students. One can't, as a male, celebrate the male body without raising questions about one's sexuality? I think my two sons' bodies are beautiful, as is my daughter's. And the lack of photos of Tom and Susan supposedly says something dark about their marriage. What the lack of photos speaks to is the lack of photos. To indicate a problem in a marriage requires positive evidence. And then there's....well, you get the point. Fortunately, I have faith that Eakins and his work will easily survive this shameless and self-promoting trashing. It would be fun to play Freud with Adams as he does with Eakins but let's not stoop to the author's level.

3 out of 5 stars Superbly Written, but Freudianly Boring.......2005-12-20

The book is extremely well written, and while it chronicles a pivotal American artists life, it quickly digresses far too deeply into the unconscious of Thomas Eakins. Eakins sexual preferences are alluded to at the turn of every page, and how it shaped his life. Every symbol and pose in the artist's photographs or paintings is considered homosexual in nature and at times stretched just a little too thin. Hidden phallic symbols pop up all over the place throughout Eakins paintings and the relationship between Eakins and his mother is repeatdly psychoanalyzed and refered to page after page. The book gets extremely repetitive, very quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Reading, But Does Biography Inform Art?.......2005-08-17

There is no question that Henry Adams scholarly book EAKINS REVEALED: THE SECRET LIFE OF AN AMERICAN ARTIST is an important tome in the already extensive library of the life and works of Thomas Eakins, an artist still considered by many to be the greatest American artist who ever lived. And if many Eakins' devotees find this information as gathered and regaled by Adams as an attempt to push Eakins of his historic pedestal, then I think the chosen title for this treatise has been misleading.

Adams has poured over countless reams of notes and letters and documents and oral histories (all well documented and scrutinized in his extensive bibliography) and presents another aspect of Eakins' life - that of a crude, exhibitionist, sexually ambiguous vs disturbed, depressed man obsessed with nudity and body functions and a man whose family history of cruelty, incest and madness informed his paintings.

The book is divided into three sections: Part One - The Eakins Legacy (including Eakins family background, odd living conditions, family quarrels, the deaths and insanities of those close to him, and including the infamous Loin Cloth Scandal that contributed to his being fired from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Part Two - Life and Art in which the previous information is shown to have influenced Eakins' portraits, rowing paintings, swimming paintings and the BIG paintings like 'The Gross Clinic', 'The Champion Single Sculls', 'William Rush' etc; and Part Three - The Case of Thomas Eakins in which Adams pulls it all together maintaining that indeed because of Adams' scholarship, Eakins is still the most important painter America has produced.

The question arises as to just how much of this Freudian muck raking is necessary and whether ultimately how important is this 'new' information to the viewer of Eakins' paintings. Yes, facts such as those presented (ad infinitum!) in this lengthy volume provide smarmy interest, if not material for a movie about a strange but great man. Others have written similarly about Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Artemsia Gentileschi, Bacon, Warhol, de Kooning, Pollock etc. No artist can stand before an easel and not have his/her interior feelings and experiences influence the painted work. But does all of this innuendo-plucking make or break an artist's place in history?

The argument Adams makes is ultimately strong and deserves respect: "Eakins, far from being the most moral of American artists, was surely one of the most profoundly confused, even disturbed. By making art out of the chaos, conflict, and scandal of his own life, Eakins brought us more deeply into the world of sorrow, suffering, and despair than any other American artist of the nineteenth century. By some peculiar alchemy, he made his dark feelings beautiful, as anyone can attest who has contemplated one of his major paintings. Their effect can only be described as hypnotic".

Where Adams succeeds in making his points is in his painting by painting dissection of all of the Freudian implications of composition, exhibitionism, indeterminate gender buttocks, hidden models, etc, yet his visual examples are so poorly presented in this volume that they are all but indecipherable. Would that the publishers had devoted more space to the paintings and even used color, an important component of Eakins' works, to make the lesson more workable.

Yet as in Adams summary, Thomas Eakins is such an important painter that any additional information or perspective only results in expanding our appreciation for his greatness. Adams writes well (if excessively) and if the reader can drop preconceived prejudice that Adams is out to dethrone Eakins by prying into his psyche, this is actually a fine read. And given some time for reactionary responses to die down, EAKINS REVEALED will be an important contribution to the art libraries. Grady Harp, August 05

                                            5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2005-06-05

Like most people who recognize the name, I came to Eakins first through "The Swimmers," an amazingly perfect painting. Later, I saw similar qualities in the rowing paintings, and realized that he was not a one hit wonder. Since then, my personal discovery of more paintings and the photographys have double underscored the mastery and the mystery I detected in each work. Reading about him, however, has been of little help. It seemed that articles were all over the place, each selecting a very particular array of facts from his wildly varied life and ignoring the facts of the other. Confusing, to say the least. This book, thankfully, pulls it all together for me. It's in three sections: the first summarizes writing about Eakins to date; the second goes through his life and works chronologically; and the third (like any good scholarly work) expostulates the authors own synthesis of the available data. Perhaps most distracting to potential readers may be the heavy reliance on Freudian psychology as an interpretive tool, a tool absolutely essential to a life so full of artifacts and so nearly devoid of primary-source, prose interpretation of their significance. If you either don't buy Freud or find it difficult to 'willing suspend your disbelief' for the sake of argument, this book will be a big zero for you. On the other hand, I am so grateful to have such a rich resource that draws together the obvious mastery of Eakins with the shadowy mystery of his life that I've intuited but been unable to name before now. As with most of the great questions about the origins of art, there are no concrete answers; too much is unknown, we have to assume too much from scattered iconographic hints. But this is a damned good exposition of both the questions, as they pertain to Eakins life, and possible answers that leave me more enthusiastic about Eakins's art, and more inspired by his craft than before.

I have long been fascinated by Thomas Eakins's life and career. Over the years I have enjoyed Lloyd Goodrich's two volume biography and Elizabeth Johns's book about his art. This book by Adams has left me thoroughly confused.

A sensitively written true story by a RAF Bomber Command wartime R/T operator who talked down the crews on their return from operations, met them off duty and so often, mourned their loss within days. The book sparkles with anecdotes and humor yet has a very special poignancy as the author reiterates her deep admiration for these truly remarkable men of Bomber Command.
