Customer Reviews:
Relatively Unenlightening Guidebook.......2004-11-30
Most Fodor's guidebooks are relatively good, but I found this one to be middling at best. The sparseness of maps and total absence of photographs (although they do manage to insert a color glossy advertisement for American Express) really hurts this book. New Zealand is a unique place and deserves substantially more detail than it receives here. Interestingly, Fodor's also publishes a book titled "Fodor's Exploring New Zealand" which is quite good, provides much better coverage of matters of interest, and has numerous excellent color photographs. Of the two, I would definitely opt for "Fodor's Exploring New Zealand," which is a much more user friendly and informative guidebook.
The best feature of this book is the "Smart Travel Tips" section which briefly summarizes important travel information about New Zealand travel, such as driving and flying information, money, mail, and tax laws, etc. This section is at the very beginning of the book and is really the only reason to even consider purchasing this book as the information in concise and crucial to travelers. Most of this information is available in other, better, guidebooks, though. Because of the deficiencies in other areas of this book, I recommend either "Fodor's Exploring New Zealand" or another guidebook.
Fodor's New Zealand.......2002-01-30
This book is a must have for anyone travelling to New Zealand. The places that are listed to stay are wonderful at any price. I find that this book was extremely helpful in my travel planning for my trip to New Zealand. Full of a lot of travel facts and information you need to know. It has information on everything from tandem paragliding to information on who to call for ferry service. A very good and informative book!
Sketchy information.......2001-07-10
The information in this book is sketchy, at best. I was VERY disappointed when I received the copy I ordered. I should have stuck with Frommer's for information on New Zealand.
Poor guide to New Zealand.......1999-04-23
Unlike other Fodor's guides, this one was disappointing. The George, one of the nicer small hotels in Christchurch wasn't listed, restaurant recommendations were few and disappointing and Local destination spots if they were mentioned, contained no useful information about accomodations etc. Lonely Planet New Zealand and Rough Guide New Zealand were much more informative.

Book Description
The recent widespread availability of intraday tick-by-tick databases for stocks, options and currencies has had an important impact on research in applied financial econometrics and market microstructure. Econometric Modelling of Stock Market Intraday Activity focuses on the econometric modelling of intraday tick-by-tick transaction data (trades and quote) for stock traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Recent quantitative modelling tools such as intraday duration models and GARCH modes are presented. A survey of trading mechanisms in financial markets and a review of market microstructure issues is also included, which allows to gain a better understanding of the motivation underlying the use of the quantitative models. In the empirical applications, the link is made with the models of the market microstructure literature that have proposed an explicit treatment of time in the trading process. Other empirical applications deal with the modelling of intraday volatility and intraday Value-at-Risk. Although the models are applied to data for stock traded on the NYSE, they are not specific to this exchange and could be used to analyze other existing trading mechanisms. Accordingly, this book should be of interest to academics and graduate students involved in empirical finance and applied econometrics, regulators working for exchanges, and practitioners in banks or brokerage firms.

An excellent reference guide for animal lovers.......1998-02-06
An excellent reference guide for animal lovers to the world of Internet in six easy steps to the site of general interest, health, chats, newsgroups and on-line publications about birds, cats, dogs, fish, rabbits, reptiles, horses and even dinosaurs.
I think it is a much needed and valuable item!.......1998-02-06
I think it is a much needed and valuable item that every Internet connected animal lover should own. This book gives greaet Internet addresses. It has everything you need to spend many hours of fun and discovery on the Internet with other animal lovers!
This is a great gift for the animal lover in your family!.......1998-02-06
First of all, the cover illustration by Bonnie Shields is adorable. Aptly depicted animals gathered around a computer monitor are a visual treat. Look for the cat that is curled around the monitor's base. He is shown rather true to form. The inside illustrations by Sharon Redfield are charming and show an eye for detail. This is a great gift for the animal lover in your family or circle of friends. More so if that animal lover is yourself. Happen to have one or more grandchildren or a niece or nephew with a computer? Animal lover or not, this book would constitute a wonderful study tool. As a comprehensive, yet easy to understand manual for everything from choosing the right computer, accessing the Internet, to fossil hunting, this book excels. The author's words are friendly, warm and serve as the wisdom of a knowledgeable friend. I feel this makes for a perfect package. Well organized, with more than 500 Internet addresses for you to explore, you will find the material broken down into easy to understand classifications. Have fun reading and exploring. I did!
If you have a pet and a PC, this book is a must read!.......1998-02-06
The Animal Lover's Guide To The Internet includes nearly 600 Web site addresses and decriptions. In addition, Bonnie included several chapters in the book to help newcomers. The first time I attempted to get on the Net, I felt like I was lost in the twilight zone. Nothing made sense and the books I read on the subject just confused me more. This book is written in simple, easy to understand language and is focused on getting you up and running quickly and painlessly!
Book Description
"Color by Accident" is designed to be used as a workbook and reference manual for the adventuresome. Beginning and experienced dyers will find "Color By Accident" to be an inspiring guide for creating one-of-a-kind fabrics not available commercially. It includes Five Variations on a versatile method and 54 tested recipes. NOT required are expensive equipment, dangerous chemicals or specialized studio space. Other books teach how to repeat a method and reproduce colors. This book points the way to exploring new color combinations and to achieving fabric that will be unique and visually complex. But be warned! As one of Ann's contemporaries reports, this process can be addictive.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource for the Serious Dyer.......2006-08-07
I have read and used many books for hand dyeing fabrics. Color By Accident by Ann Johnston is of extremely high quality. It is written much like a cookbook, with clear measures, clear directions and ample support for further creativity. This is not a tie-dyeing manual. It will help the ardent fabric dyer create wonderful materials usable for any type of sewing project. And it is an excellent introduction for those who have never tried this process and don't know where to begin. It is fully resourced, providing information on obtaining everything you will need to proceed.
Color by Accident: Low-Water Immersion Dyeing.......2006-01-22
As a quilter, who dyes her own fabric, I was disappointed in this book. First, I think her recipe for stock dyes uses a LOT of dye. Procion dyes are not inexpensive and she recommends 2 Tablespoons of dye/cup of water. In most receipes I have used, the yellows use 1 T of dye in 1 cup of water, blues use 2 teaspoons, and reds 1 teaspoon. The author makes no differentiation between colors of dye in her measurements even though the dye companies and all of the other books I have used, do. I think 2 T/cup is overkill and wasteful.
Second, I don't understand her process for adding Soda Ash. I don't think it works well and felt that a lot of the color washed out of the fabrics as a result. Most of the books I've worked with recommend pre-soaking the fabric and this seems to work much better. (They use a lot less dye in their stocks and the colors are brighter.)
Finally, I tried some of her recipes in the book and was disappointed with the results. The colors on the top of the value parfait were too weak and none of the fabrics in that batch had the texture of fabrics dyed by the processes recommended in Dyeing for Quilters, Fabric Dyeing for Beginners, and Robbi Eklow's new book. I ended up over-dyeing them to salvage the fabric. They are the first pieces I've dyed in 6 months that I didn't like.
However, for individuals who want a simple approach to fabric dyeing this book may work well. It simplifies the dye formulas (by using large quantities of dye and omitting salt) and reduces the steps involved in dyeing value runs and color runs. If you don't mind spending the money on dyes, her approach is easy to follow and can yield decent results. I would recommend more agitation and squeezing in the value parfaits to get adequate dye and soda ash into the center of the fabric.
For folks, who don't mind a few more steps, I think the books mentioned above cover the subject of fabric dyeing much more extensively.
A MUST HAVE FOR CRAFTY PEOPLE.......2005-07-20
This is a excellent book for people wanting to do silk or cotton dying. It is easy to understand and has a lot of project to do that are quite easy. It has a lot of ideas and allowes you to use you imagination to create different colors and abstract patterns. No two projects will look identical.
A Recipe Book for Exciting Dyeing Techniques!.......2004-06-21
If you have ever wanted a definitive resource on alternative dyeing technique using Procion dyes, this is it! Ann Johnston is the authority on dyeing with these fiber-reactive dyes, and here she gives the basis for the type of dyeing that is so popular today: low-water immersion dyeing. She teaches the method using many different recipes which are revolutionary; at least to me they were! Going through the recipes, the reader will learn how to apply these same techniques using other color combinations. Most unique was the layered-dyeing technique called "parfait", which yields three different-colored fabrics from the SAME dyepot. Incredible!
All in all, this was just the book I'd hoped it would be, and then some. I've been using it now for about four years, and not once have I been disappointed with the results of my fabrics. For those interested in regular vat dyeing and direct application techniques, she also give basic instructions and recipes for these, too.
This book will hook you into dyeing for good!
Great for quilters.......2004-04-13
The author introduces her technique of dyeing with little water. She provides everything a complete beginner needs: from materials, to tools, to step-by-step instructions. It's a great book if you dye small pieces or if you like the patterned effect her technique creates on larger pieces. If you want a uniform color on your clothes, however, her technique may not work. So, it's a wonderful book for quilters who want to create unique pieces but need not reproduce them exactly at a later point. In fact, the book cover itself shows beautifully the results of her technique.

Book Description
* First in-depth biography of Harry Boland
* Establishes Boland as a revolutionary organizer of comparable stature to his two more celebrated friends and colleagues Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera
* Author draws upon thousands of Boland’s personal letters, diaries, police reports and other documents in Irish, British and American archives, and in family possession, many of which are previously unknown
The definitive biography of Harry Boland incorporating previously untapped archives and establishing him one of the most influential figures in Irish history. A complex revolutionary organizer, Boland is revealed as a politician of comparable stature to Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera
Apart from Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera, Harry Boland was probably the most influential organizer of the Irish Republican movement between 1916 and 1922. Already famous as a hurler before 1916, he was convicted and imprisoned after serving as a volunteer officer in the GPO. His influence later extended to almost every aspect of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and in his work as Irish envoy to America. He was intimately associated with both Collins and de Valera, but broke with Collins over the terms of the Anglo-Irish treaty in December 1921. He was the principal intermediary between the treaty’s supporters and opponents, before being fatally shot by national army officers in the second month of the civil war.
Boland’s mix of animal charm, gregariousness, wit and a dash of ruthlessness made him an influential and formidable character. Though not an intellectual in his manner he was a clear thinker, a forceful orator and a graceful writer. He was also a man about town, equally at home in Dublin, Manchester or New York, a bon vivant of varied tastes and amongst the most attractive yet elusive personalities of the Irish revolution.
David Fitzpatrick’s biography draws upon thousands of letters to and from Boland as well as diaries, police reports, memoirs and other documents preserved in Irish, British and American archives and in family possession. These mainly unknown documents record in astonishing detail the inner workings of Irish republicanism, including its personal conflicts and alliances, and reveal the critical importance of fraternity in determining the course of Ireland’s revolution.

Customer Reviews:
meticulouly researched, a great tragic story.......1999-03-10
Jim Maher has done a wonderful job of bringing to life this tragic and romantic figure of the Irish War of Independence (1916-1921). Harry Boland was a soldier and politician, and was a third part of a doomed love triangle with the beauty Kitty Kiernan and Harry's comrade in arms and gigantic figure of the time, Michael Collins. Their friendship was ruptured by the shameful Irish civil war which cast a long shadow over Irish politics and history for the rest of the twentieth century. Boland was a diplomat, fund-raiser and soldier, ahead of his time, a very modern hero, but ultimately he was destroyed by the bitterness and violence which engulfed the fledgling Irish State. This book is a fitting tribute to a man whose hard work and sacrifice shaped the Ireland of today.
Easy lucid style, good characterisation, a gripping read.......1999-02-14
This book moves at a fast pace right through. It is a light read though containing all the important historical facts. The author uses dialogue where possible to push the action forward. He includes many anecdotes to capture and maintain the reader's attention. The book details the close friendship between Harry Boland and Michael Collins and how this bond was shattered by later events. There is much variety in the narrative - sporting highlights of Boland's early G.A.A career, the armed and political struggle for Irish independence which brought Boland to Great Britain to rescue deValera from Lincoln Prison and later to America as Special Envoy of the Irish Republic. Conflicting events occur such as rivalry between Boland and Collins for the hand of Kitty Kiernan and the Treaty settlement between Ireland and Great Britain. This agreement split the Irish people and ended with Collins supporting the pro-Treaty side and Boland taking an anti-treaty stance. Much emphasis is placed on the efforts of Boland to prevent Civil War by becoming the architect of the Collins-deValera Pact. Boland and Collins fought on opposite sides in the inevitable war of brothers and were both killed within three weeks of each other. This book correctly captured the character of Boland - warts and all. The book is thoroughly researched and is a joy to read.
Well researched, tragic story ,superbly written.......1999-01-29
This book documents for the first time the life of Harry Boland and the role he played in Ireland's quest for independence. Long time friend of Michael Collins, this book charts their close relationship, begun through mutual dedication towards the achievement of an Irish Republic. The friendship suffers the difficulty of shared admiration for a woman from Co. Longford which ends in victory for Collins. They choose different sides in the Irish Civil War and die within three weeks of each other in enemy camps. Both "served their country in the way they knew best". This book is easy to read and captures much of the drama, suspence and romance usually associated with a good novel. It describes in great detail the period from 1919-1921. It is to be recommended to students of Irish history as well as those readers in search of a tragedy, romance and suspence.
