5 out of 5 stars Excellent scholarly biography.......2007-05-29

'The Education of Julius Caesar' is a solid biography of Caesar and an excellent overview of late republic political history. Khan writes with a lucent style and great technique to tell Caesar's story. For example, throughout the book Kahn contrasts Caesar's Epicureanism to the optimates' Stoicism; something I've never seen done in a Caesar biography before. He uses this contrast to highlight that Caesar's life was more than a political power struggle; it was also a philosophical struggle.

My only warning--if you know next to nothing about Caesar's life or late roman republic politics don't start here. While the book is extremely detailed it doesn't do a great job of showing where cities are located (there are no maps), or explaining the political curus honorum. It's easy to get a praetor, tribune, aedile, censor, consul, and everything else mixed up if you've never studied it before. I'd recommend Colleen McCullough's excellent 'Masters of Rome' before reading this.

Overall--an excellent biography of Caesar, well written, and great style.

5 out of 5 stars Vivat Kahn!.......2005-06-26

FORGET THE ALLEGATIONS OF BIAS AND LEFTISM BY SOME PREVIOUS REVIEWERS. In 40 years of studying the Roman Republic, I find this book to be the best review of Caesar and his times ever written. Kahn does a compelling job of tracing and demonstrating the people, events, knowledge, and institutions that shaped and were modified by Caesar. Especially if you are a Ciceronian, you need to read this book; no writer on Rome since Kahn's book was first published can write without reference to this work, even if to disagree.

I read this when it was first issued, and I go back to it again and again. I also recommend it to those who want a readable and full introduction to Late Republican life.

1 out of 5 stars Who's the baboon?.......2002-01-01

Why would anyone write a biography of a historic figure and use a cartoon of a baboon on the cover? Can that be the face of the author?

I doubt that the greatest general and statesman of ancient times looked like a baboon. More likely it's a leftist biographer.

4 out of 5 stars Excellence with a Grain of Salt.......2001-07-06

I found Kahn's book fascinating, although I agree with an earlier reviewer that I regret he could not keep his personal politics more out of his book - irritating, but a small caveat when there is so much of use here. It's as if Kahn is too prone to project Rome in 60 BC onto the U.S. in, say, 1935. I've read many books on Caesar (including C. Meier's rather romantic German version) and in many ways, I enjoyed Kahn's more than any except Gelzer (who is still the best). Kahn has his finger on almost every significant event in Caesar's (and the late Republic's) life and is able to work through the facts both thoroughly and logically. In fact, the book is almost overwhelming in its detail. Agreed, he is one of the "pro-Caesar" faction - which seems almost by definition to mean, he's anti-Optimate. Well, it's the rare historian of Caesar who can manage not to take sides on this subject, the very issue that tore the Republic apart. Read the book with the realization that you have a fine bio of Caesar here, accurate and thorough, but more than slightly prejudiced against the Roman Senate that so thoroughly detested and tried to destroy Caesar and you will do very well.

2 out of 5 stars Author's political biases are projected onto the pasrt.......2001-04-06

What's wrong with the Education of Julius Caesar? In a word, Arthur Kahn can't seem to keep his Leftist political biases from coloring his evaluation of the Late Republic. His prejudices seep in on virutally every page in which the Senate is discussed. This is not to say that the Senators where saints; far from it. But they were men of their time, who had been raised in a political community that indoctrinated them into it's beliefs just as every other society does. Kahn seems to ignore this in his zeal to paint the "oligarchs", as he calls them, in a bad light. This is illegitimate, as anyone who understands the structure of the Roman state in that era must know. The Romans had a nomialist theory of the state. Rather than thinking that Rome as a poltical community was some kind of larger whole, over and above it's citizens, the Romans believed that Rome was nothing but the assembly of the Roman people as private persons. This is the reason they based citizenship and voting rights on wealth. Since they did not have a very sharp and differentiated notion of political as opposed to private life, they could not find a basis for evaluating one apart from the other. Thus, a rich man was literally more of a citizen than a poor one, because he had more of the Republic than the poor man did, due to his extensive property. We regard this as bizarre, but no one in Rome seems to have thought twice about it. A result of this identification of the personal and the political is the radical fusion of the personal interests of the rulers with those of the state. That is why the Senators reacted so violently to reform attempts - they knew no vision of politics that would enable them to see any degradation of their posiiton as anything other than an attack of Roman society itself. They simply could not differentiate their own positions of power from the State. This is what Kahn ignores. In page after page, he portrays the Senate as a gang of cynical, ruthless misers out to strip everyone else to the bone while hiding their crimes under the name of patriotism. In truth, these sad little men just didn't know any better. Kahn ignores this, and thus projects his own class-warfare ridden politics onto men who lived two millenia ago.

3 out of 5 stars And Then What?.......2006-07-28

Although I was excited by the premise of Repacking Your Bags, I didn't feel that it lived uop to my expectations. The book is well-written and has interesting examples of people making life changes, but somehow the process never becomes completely clear. Perhaps there's not enough in there about how to unpack the bags and how to decide what to leave behind. Perhaps there's comething amiss in the organization. Despite some excellent information, this just never comes to gethe as a process.

5 out of 5 stars Window of Opportunity.......2005-07-13

I was stuck in a government job for 13 years - budget restraints meant few if any raises over the years - but as a manager/director the responsibilities piled on. I read this book as and most importantly found it easy to apply! I looked at my skill sets using their tools, prioritized what was important to me and rated my risks. I took a job that was to last a year which lastest 3 and tripled my income the first year of leaving Government. I've continued in the vein over the past 6 years. I have recommended this book to everyone I know who is wondering what to do with the rest of their life!

          4 out of 5 stars Highly Readable.......2003-02-20

This book dares you to have a "Time Out" from the busines of everyday and examine your life. It reminds you that life is a journey and as such, you have to continually pack and repack to lighten your load. Although it caters more to couples, everyone can benefit from it. This is a must read for someone who's standing at the crossroads of life. The exercises at the end of every chapter are very helpful. Read it, it might help you to throw away some unwanted stuff in your life.

3 out of 5 stars Thinking about your baggage?.......2002-11-21

Simply put, this book is about considering the choices you've made in life, and making decision based on this idea: "Live in the place you belong, with the people you love, doing the right work, on purpose."

Leider and Shapiro use the metaphor of repacking your bags for the journey ahead, mindfully considering what you need to carry with you for your vision of a happy, joyful, purposeful life, and what you can unpack and leave behind.

The book contains some inspirational stories, and a number of soul searching exercises. I was challenged by some exercises, which promote dialogue with others as part of the process. Figuring out a life path can be easier with the help of others.

Why only three stars? I grew weary of the repacking metaphor, found some exercises too simplistic to aid me, and lost interest once the focus moved on past finding purpose (about 1/2 the book) to other related topics. I give the parts that spoke to me five stars, and less to the rest of the book.

5 out of 5 stars I'm ready to start repacking after reading this book!.......2005-12-14

This book is amazing. This is a great book for someone that is in a transitional stage of their life (as I am) or someone that is looking to change careers. Some of the things that it talks about (i.e. getting rid of the things you no longer need, asking yourself what you want to do with the rest of your life) are things that I had already thought about before reading the book, however, the authors gave me a more structured way to think about it.

          4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2004-02-01

"Repacking Your Bags" provides me with great pointers in how to 'Live passionately for today & purposefully for tomorrow'. It is greatly engaging, & has inspired & guided me to align the four essential elements (relationship, work, place, purpose) of a happy life.

4 out of 5 stars Generally helpful, but very couple-oriented.......2002-02-27

This book is a pleasant, amusing, readable way of addressing the major issues that confront one at midlife: Am I living a life that accords with my values, ideals, and talents? If not, what specifically needs to be changed so I can achieve this? I found the "unpacking" metaphor especially appealing because (as an ardent traveler) I well know the real-life value of traveling light; it was rather astonishing to me to discover how much of a pack rat I've been in other aspects of my life! On the other hand, as a single person with many friends but no life partner (and no desire for one), I found that the authors' couple orientation rendered many of the exercises virtually useless for me. I agree that love is an important part of a full, satisfying life, but defining love as marriage, or the equivalent, seems ridiculously confining! Otherwise, the book is a pleasure to read, and most of the exercises gave me useful insights, so I recommend it with reservations.

4 out of 5 stars What does success mean to you now?.......2001-11-09

Lots of us are now facing career and life changes whether through layoffs or a sense of "It's time." This book can help you crystallize your own goals, your own vision for what you want to be and do. It's different for everyone.

But what do you say when you get that interview question, or one like it? A successful answer is one that differentiates you from other candidates while striking a chord in the interviewer that speaks to the employer's own goals and values.

I've had similar questions--"Where do you want to be in 10 years?" Twelve years ago I had the answer, and I've done most of it and more in my career, and was proud of it. Lots of my achievements have furthered the business of the companies that employed me.

An interviewer may look for an answer that reflected the kind of job you do. If it's sales or production, then your answer may be "Consistently beating my daily, weekly, quarterly and annual forecasts." If it's design, "Consistently stretching the boundaries of what is possible while keeping my feet firm in what we can plausibly implement with high quality standards." If it's customer service, you might be mentioning similar high quality standards while keeping people happy. And so on. And you elaborate.

But that's not all there is, is there? Right now I'm ready to follow the advice in the book:

"Living in the Place you Belong,
          with the People you Love,
          doing the Right Work,
          on Purpose."

Defining and elaborating each of the four is up to you, but it's a good starting point for those kinds of questions. Periodically reviewing your vision of success is also supposed to be a good way to avoid mid-life crises. Because you will grow in your work and life, you will change your mind about certain things. The idea is to define your life for yourself.

I recommend this book to get you to ask yourself the right questions, identify unnecessary baggage, and embark on your journey.

I just finished making the Banana Cheesecake, and it's possibly the best dessert I've ever eaten - and only 130 calories! This book has some really great recipes, from wonderful spinach dips to salad dressings to various desserts; yogurt cheese is truly an amazing food - I've never eaten better and I'm losing all kinds of weight! Draining the whey reduces the tartness of the yogurt a great deal - the cheesecakes do not taste like gobs of yogurt (not that there's anything wrong with that) but taste like a lighter version of regular cheesecake. Not to mention the very high calcium and protein content - everyone who loves to cook (and eat!) needs to explore yogurt cheese, and I highly suggest this book along with the Goldbeck's "Eat Well the YoChee Way."

The author starts out by explaining the miracle of yogurt cheese & how to make it. She also discusses other ingredients & how to make the recipes even healthier. Nutrition information is provided along with dietetic exchanges.

Recipes include dips, spreads, appetizers, salads, dressings, snacks, chilled soups, & breads. Many varieties of cheesecake, cookies, cakes, pies, puddings, frostings, & fondues are also included.

There are even recipes for many flavors of frozen yogurt that only require a blender. Some of my favorites are the crescents, soft pretzels, & no-cook cucumber soup. I also enjoyed the scrumptious oatmeal kiss cookies.

5 out of 5 stars ADD? You Need This Book!.......2003-04-18

This guidebook is an essential reference for teachers, parents, and anyone who deals with kids on a regular basis. The prevalence of ADD diagnoses should lead us all to question what the bigger picture is. Allergy problems are one of the most important consequences of our modern world. This guidebook is designed to help laypeople spot allergies in kids, especially the kids who act up. It's a shame to drug kids with Ritalin when dietary or environmental changes can give better results without turning children into zombies. To ignore the accomplishments of Environmental Medicine would be foolish.

There is a lot of detail packed into this small book to help parents and teachers understand food, environmental, and chemical allergies, and to spot them on their own. Helpful advice is provided for different diets that can reveal a lot about a troubled child's behavior. Diagnostic diets (elimination diets) are detailed as well as rotation diets to minimize food reactions. Descriptions of children's allergic responses are detailed and accurate, making it easier for you to know how to spot allergies in kids.

Though this low-budget publication is written by a doctor and not a writer, it is not overly technical in style. The writing is to-the-point, a how-to manual for your potentially allergic kid, full of suggestions, case studies, and references. Dr. Rapp is an expert in the field of pediatric environmental medicine in the tradition of Theron Randolph MD, and her experience is apparent. Though I know there are better treatments than extracts for allergies (her recommendation, in addition to dietary and/or environmental changes), it is still a vast improvement over drugs and allergy shots. Her diagnostic methods are also not the best known, but still better than the more mainstream methods she also details in this guide. To be critical, this is not a guide to the most cutting-edge diagnosis or treatment in modern allergy medicine, but it's a vast improvement over more mainstream approaches of Ritalin, steroids, and other drugs. Every parent of an ADD-type child needs this book!

Don't drug 'em first, see if there is another way to deal with the problems - this book offers alternative reasons for poor behavior and alternative methods to help or cure them. Take a look before you reach for heavy drugs.

5 out of 5 stars great gift for teachers and parents.......2000-11-12

Easily read and understood book. Kids don't like being bad and this book explains why, because of their reactions to their environment, they can't help it. It addresses the reasons, not the symptoms, of poor performance. Great book for parents who care to give their children the best possible chance in life. Not for parents who just want to give their child a pill. This book's content will become common knowledge in the future as parents demand more out of the medical field.
