Book Description

In The Enchanted Orchid Max Fulcher has brought together his talent for photography and his knowledge and love of the alluring blooms. This is not just a how-to-grow-'em book. It's an entertaining read - as warm and witty as the author - interspersed with his gorgeous photographs. Armed with camera and diary, Max has tracked orchids across Asia and the Pacific for two decades. He recounts many of his orchid experiences on the orchid trail including how, in Burma, he happened upon the rare blue Vanda and why, with a $13,000 hole in his belly, he limped around New York in winter searching out moon orchids. There's also advice for the home grower. It also includes a chapter with tips on photography.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, timeless book.......2004-01-20

There is something magical about this book that stays with you long after you have read it. The photos are exquisitely beautiful and the writing is entertaining and insightful. It is obviously the work of a man who feels passionately about orchids and life generally, and has a great sense of adventure. On reading the book, you begin to believe that you are actually there with him - in Hawaii or Singapore or Western Australia - sharing the wondrous 'orchid' experience. The book is destined to become a modern classic.

5 out of 5 stars Georgeous Photographs.......2000-10-14

The photographs in this book are VERY high quality - the best I've seen - and there are lots of them. The colors are bright, brilliant even! Most photos are full page. I bought it to give as a Christmas gift to an orchid-loving friend, but I really want to keep it so I guess I'll have to get a second copy! The book is also well organized. If you love orchids, I'm pretty sure you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting But True.......2000-09-13

The book "The Enchanted Orchid" by Max Fulcher and Margaret Kelly have truly lived up to, if not, surpassed my expectations as far as the content is concerned. Photography is at its best notwithstanding the fact that the authors have carefully selected their subjects and successfully incorporated artifacts which effectively introduced the places where the orchids was said to have originated or photographed.

To say the I personally liked the book would be an understatement. I LOVE IT! The combination of humor with real life situations have proven the skill and talent of the authors. Among the chapters that I am amused of is that the one pertaining to the Phalaenopsis orchid wherein true passion for this wonderful flowers can really bring out the best in a person, let's say, a real adrenaline surge!

Once again, my kudos to Max Fulcher and Margaret Kelly for a very wonderful and educational book. I, myself, from the Philippines, where some of the photos were taken, is very grateful to the authors for further enhancing our already colorful culture and showcasing our rich flora to the world. I strongly believe the book will be out-of-stock from our bookstands in no time! Good luck and more power!

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Find.......2000-07-11

What a find...like a rare orchid itself. The story of a Queensland lad, used to the magic of the tropical rainforest, gradually discovering the delights of orchids. These days Max is a Sydney-sider, but the book follows his journeys throughout the world...as he finds orchids in their natural settings...and the people and the stories around the flowers. Loved his anecodote about how orchids to him, when a teenager, were something you presented to a young woman on a first date....and what they meant to the girl, but more importantly, to her parents.

His photography is remarkable - the repsect and enthusiasm for his subjects is enhanced by his understanding of the importance of natural light...and the time of day when photographs can capture the best of an orchid's magic - ie pretty much invariably about dawn or thereafter. Max's energy in getting up to get the right shot in the right place with the right light is astounding.

Anyway, it is very rare to find a book like this - a love for the natural world focussed on orchids, but with magically written stories leading from the flowers to remarkable people and places. Not only gorgeous pictures...but a most rewarding read.

I can only suggest it would make a tremendous gift - for anyone really - but if you have a flower-lover who is hard to buy for otherwise...this is it.

Steven Turner, Sydney

5 out of 5 stars The multi-faceted "Enchanted Orchid".......2000-06-22

A book about orchids? Yes indeed. And about photgraphy, and the people and countries of the Asia/Pacific region. All told with the author's sly humor and grand sense of adventure as he tracks down the most beautiful of the beautiful with his camera, always mindful of respecting the customs of the lands and the people who share their environment with these elegant flowers. A wonderful travelog full of personal stories and anecdotes and a great sense of tolerance and whimsy directed at those of us who have many pre-conceived notions about these "enchanting" plants. A terrific read and beautifully photographed.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Ideas, more than just stamping.......2007-05-14

This book is exceptionally great because you're doing more than just rubber stamping, it's rubber stamping and beyond.

The book is well done, has lots of ideas and explains each creation very well. It's a big book and well worth the money. I bought the Quick and Clever Handmade Cards book along with this, it's not done as well and has less ideas and doesn't explain well either.

If you like variety and something different, but easy to do, I highly recommend this book!

          5 out of 5 stars Rich Resource.......2007-03-28

Worth every penny. Packed with hundreds of techniques, variations on techniques, ideas, samples. Every time I open it I find something new. Instructions and supply lists clear and complete. I do wish supply list was printed in black ink instead of soft orange but it's ok.

5 out of 5 stars Most Complete Book I have tried.......2006-06-26

I have more than a dozen paper craft books and this is by far the best I've tried. Many paper craft books give a list of materials and a couple very broad directions. This book is dfferent in that it presents its projects by skill group, i.e. rubber stamping, heat embossing, sewing, etc. There are sections in this book that I have never even heard of before like the shaving cream method. In general each chapter starts with an in depth instruction on the topic and then offers several different projects using that process. Great for beginners and more advanced crafters.

                  Book Description

The happiness of Theo van Gogh (1857-1891) and Jo van Gogh-Bonger (1862-1925) was to last less than two years. After some initial hesitation on Jo's part, they became a couple in December 1888, and were separated by Theo's mental breakdown in early October 1890. His death in January 1891 brought their life together to an end. Their correspondence, comprising 101 letters, is kept in the Van Gogh Museum and presents an endearing picture of two young people planning the necessary arrangements for their life together in Paris. They discuss finding an apartment, purchasing household goods, and the style of the interior decorations in their new home.

The correspondence also offers a unique picture of the views of a man who played an important role in the Parisian art world of the 1880s. Theo, and his brother Vincent, amassed a great number of works which are now the core of the Van Gogh Museum collection. Finally, we are given more information about Theo's life as an art dealer in Paris, his dealings with other artists and prominent figures in artistic circles, and the vicissitudes in the fortunes of Vincent van Gogh.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not Just for the Student of Art..........2003-08-03

What a wonderful book! Not just for the student of art... reading this correspondence could inspire us all. It is fresh, vivid and frank. And it is a reminder that before e-mail, we once wrote letters... before telephones, we once poured our hearts out on paper... before television, we exercised our brains and spent time building relationships.

It's ironic how often Jo and Theo mention how inadequate they are at expressing themselves on paper, when actually the opposite is true. In these letters that we are so privileged to be able to read, they are so considerate and thoughtful of each other's feelings and actually get inside each other's minds by reading and expressing thoughts on paper. In this way, their time apart is spent getting to know each other, almost as much as if they were in the same room.

Jo often writes, in her womanly way, about practical matters, true, but is so endearing as she scolds herself for being too trivial or boring and never allows herself to get too bogged down by teacups and dressing gowns. Jo seems to be quite liberated. In one letter she says she's shocked at Theo mentioning that he might want to keep her locked up inside the new apartment; in another letter, she lets Theo know in no uncertain terms that he should not delude himself that she has no opinion on a subject as important as the arrangement of the furniture - that she has "ten opinions for that matter." She's got spirit. And Theo is so sweet as he constantly reminds her that everything she does is important to him and that he loves hearing about "everyday things" in her life. We find ourselves getting to know these two and anticipating what the reply will be in the next letter.

At the same time, it is touching how Jo is so sympathetic and loving toward Theo's plight with his brother and often tries to be helpful without being too pushy or presumptuous. Reading these letters, one can see the plan and her life purpose unfolding. We can't imagine anyone else playing this part in the Van Gogh brothers' life more compassionately and productively.

Theo's expression in letters exalts his position in the van Gogh story and he comes across as literally a prophet and seems to know not only that one day Vincent will be world famous, but so much more. His own writings here show us how valuable a role Theo played in Vincent's imminent success. It's as though they were one person. On one hand, Theo understands Vincent completely and knows his soul; yet on the other, he is destroyed by the constant worrying his brother's hopeless situation brings. He wishes good things for Vincent, but knows they'll never happen.

The thing that I enjoyed the most about this book is reading Theo's thoughts on art. He was a true unmitigated art lover and a romantic soul who was able to feel and embrace the meaning and essence of paintings and the artists' expression. I love Theo's letter to Jo (27 Jan. 1889) where he compares music to art. And the poignant remark, "I realise I'm filling my page with what are probably incomprehensible flights of fancy..."

When Theo sets out to define art, it is as if he were right there with Vincent painting in the mistral winds, "What is art? ...the painter will in all likelihood have succeeded in giving us a glimpse of ourselves... he will have succeeded in touching our very soul... this concept is the purest."

"The painter can only tell us about what the world reveals to him and, if he is a great artist, he does so in a way that moves us."

Theo talking about Degas, Monet, de Haan, Gauguin... what a glimpse into a chapter in art history that has been interpreted over and over in movies, books and art classes... but never expressed in this way. Reading him describe a Monet painting is sheer delight!

But his heartfelt soul bleeds most when he talks about Vincent. He knows him as well as he knows himself and when he calls Vincent a genius, explains why he has such difficulties and knows the paradox that is Vincent; when he reminds Jo that he is "exceptional" and that there is no solution where Vincent goes, that "There's no such thing as a peaceful environment for him," Theo is, in a way also talking about himself.

Theo tells Jo he has "a marble by Rodin representing the head of John the Baptist on a platter. The sculptor chose a figure for the precursor of Christ that bears a striking resemblance to Vincent." In her introduction to the "complete letters," Jo added, "Later, when I saw the sculpture, I found it bore a perfect resemblance to Theo."

                  That about says it all.

5 out of 5 stars New insights into Vincent van Gogh and his family.......2000-09-06

In this volume the 101 existing letters between Vincent's brother, Theo van Gogh, and Theo's fiance, Johanna Bonger, are published for the first time in their entirity.

Through the letters the reader gains insights into a young Dutch couple in love in the late 19th century. The book not only presents intriguing and very personal insights about Vincent van Gogh, but is also a compelling and touching chronicle of two young people as they prepare for marriage and a life together. A life tragically brief, as the title suggests.

Much has been written about Vincent van Gogh, of course, but it's fascinating to read insights about how his own family and contemporaries perceived him. For example Theo wrote: "He is one of the most advanced painters and it is difficult to understand him, even for me who knows him so intimately. His ideas cover so much ground, examining what is humane and how one should look at the world, that one must first free oneself from anything remotely linked to convention to understand what he was trying to say, but I am sure he will be understood later on. It is just hard to say when."

A satisfying and very worthwhile exploration of three lives--forever interwoven.
