Book Description
In 1806 Lt. Louis Garneray's ship was en route to France when it was captured by the Royal Navy. Confined for nine years with hundreds of others in the cramped quarters of a prison ship off Portsmouth, he tells a compelling story in turns violent, poignant, dark, and humorous. Originally published in 1851 in French as Mes Pontons, the memoir is considered to be the most detailed account of shipboard prison life at that time. Translator Richard Rose presents the first full, unabridged English-language version of the classic and draws on extensive research to examine the veracity of the more fanciful elements of the narrative. As an added feature, the book is illustrated with paintings and etchings done by Garneray, who became a distinguished maritime artist later in life. This rare first-person exposé on a little-known facet of the age of sail is a valuable resource and makes fascinating reading. 30 illustrations. 6 x 9 inches.
Book Description
Jesusita Aragon earned the title "la partera," or midwife, at the age of fourteen. Apprenticed to her grandmother, she learned the traditional Hispanic methods of assisting childbirth. She won the coveted title by performing her first delivery when an expectant mother went into labor in her grandmother's absence. In the years that followed, she was often the only source of medical care available in an isolated, mountainous area of New Mexico. Jesusita was so prized for her medical wisdom that she came to deliver more than 12,000 babies in the course of her career.
This is Jesusita's story, told in her own words. She describes her early training as a midwife, her forced departure from home due to two unmarried pregnancies, and her solitary struggle to support her children. La Partera tells how she gradually emerged as a leader in her community, painstakingly building by hand a small maternity center for her patients while gaining the respect of the Anglo medical community.
As Jesusita's story unfolds, so too does the story of the women of the region. Supplemental sections by the author illuminate Jesusita's culture and past, along with a historical account of the network of medical care provided by Hispanic and Anglo female healers. Illustrated with photographs of both people and places, La Partera reflects the culture of an era through the prism of Jesusita's hard and useful life.
Fran Leeper Buss lives and teaches in Tucson, Arizona.
Customer Reviews:
A most amazing woman..........2000-02-26
This book details the life of Jesusita Aragon, a woman who has ushered more than 15,000 babies into this world. From her childhood in rural northern New Mexico to her career as the region's most highly respected midwife, one learns of the trials and tribulations endured duing a pivotal period in the American Southwest's progression from traditional Hispanic life into the modern times. As a piece of anthropological history, and as a human story, this book documents a reality little known to most people. Written from a first-hand observation and involvement, Fran Buss has captured the day-to-day feeling of the life that this most amazing woman lead. I was fortunate enough to have had her deliver both of my children, and I can attest to the accuracy and sincerity of this book. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in home birth or Southwestern U.S. history.

The authors bill it as a "truly epic journey": the voyage from pregnancy through a lifetime of parenting twins. Perinatologists Connie L. Agnew, M.D., and Alan H. Klein, M.D. (also a pediatrician) incorporate a winning combination of helpful facts, educated opinion, and candid roundtable discussions--a combination that nicely maps the journey's first course for expectant parents of multiples.
Those readers familiar with the ever-popular What to Expect When You're Expecting--a mainstay for first-time parents--will be delighted to see a similar format employed here. The pregnancy and birth chapters break down into chunks of gestational weeks, outlining basic fetal development, mom's changing body, and special "transitional" issues common to each trimester. These chapters are further enhanced by pencil illustrations of the mother's pregnant body (with a peekaboo view of the developing twins) and roundtable discussions involving the authors and a panel of twins' parents.
The book's second half delves into getting through that first, tough year. While ample information on labor and delivery overlaps both halves of the book, this second section spends more time focused on the growing babies and the challenges new parents face in their relationships with their children and with each other. Again, the roundtable discussions prove quite valuable; it's always nice to read encouraging words from those who have lived through preterm delivery, sleep deprivation, and older sibling regression. Growth charts and a helpful resource guide of organizations, periodicals, and retail outlets round out the package. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
The likelihood of giving birth to twins has shot up from one-in-90 to one-in-40 in recent years, thanks to the escalating use of fertility treatments and the advancing age of first-time mothers. Today, more than 100,000 multiple births take place annually, but despite this astonishing statistic, there hasn't been an authoritative reference that adequately focuses on the unique concerns of the parents until now.
Twins! gives parents comprehensive information on the physical, medical, emotional, and psychological issues involved in having twins. The first part of the book covers the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience, and discusses a broad range of twin-specific information such as the epidemiology of twinning, fetal and embryonic development, nutritional needs, and exercise. The second section covers the first year of life, discussing such topics as telling the twins apart, size and energy differences, and how to cope with the extra work.
Additional features include discussions with parents of twins, in which they share their experience on a variety of topics; sidebars filled with fascinating facts; a workbook for recording the pregnancies progress; and several appendices.

Not the best, but better than most.......2007-08-31
I still haven't found the "best" twin pregnancy book -- I think a "What to Expect Twin" guide would be the best -- but this was definately one of the better ones. The conversations were completely boring and this could use some additional illustrations in my option, but the book was a lot better than some of the others.
Okay Book, but There is a Better Twin Pregnancy Book.......2007-02-12
I found this book to be okay. "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads" by Luke and Eberlein was MUCH more useful and helpful than this book. This book was boring and a slow read in comparison to the above mentioned book.
Very Good Medical Information.......2007-02-09
This books was written by a medical staff, and it is full of medical information. However, it doesn't sound very technical neither scaring. I enjoyed the clear style and simple words, without being too informal.
I didn't enjoyed the drawings, specially those showing the babies in mother's belly: I would prefer photos or more realistic drawins
Great Guide when Pregnant!!.......2007-01-12
I bought this book right after we found out we where having twins at 12 weeks. It has brought alot of piece of mind, seeing how the babies grow in the pictures and also the breakdown from month to month. It is easy to read and understand, I still have 10 weeks to go but we feel alot more prepared now.
Great for twin or multiple pregnancies..........2007-01-04
I bought this for my sister when she was pregnant with her twins and she was able to get tons of helpful info from it to assist in her pregnancy.

Loved this book.......2007-05-14
Small and sweet. No wasted words and filler talk, just great information in an easy to read format.
I brought it to work with me and showed it around resulting in 3 of my coworkers deciding to get it.
I rate this one as Awesome. It is in my top 5 on nutrition books.
The Food Doctor.......2000-03-25
I have a lot of nutrition and healing books, but I like this one the best. The layout of the book is very colorful, and easy to read. The authors are concise and knowledgeable, and they make using the book very easy. There isn't a lot of confusing data or medical terms either. Instead the authors state everything very simply, and make it easy to understand for the average Joe or Jane. There is a list of the top 100 foods, and I have found it very helpful when changing my diet. This book also has yummy and easy to prepare recipies, as well as sections on various ailments and what foods to eat to help remedy them. I found this book to be a great information source in getting healthy and fit.

Customer Reviews:
Crafts are for older children.......2007-09-17
This book had a lot of really wonderful ideas, however, most of the crafts are for older children and my party was for 6 year olds and younger. I made the fairy braclets for the girls myself as it was a little time consuming. For kids 8+ this is a wonderful book with some really cute ideas.
Cool book........2007-05-13
for all who love fairies or crafts, this is a perfect book. Great ideas, wonderful processes and beautiful products!
Beautiful Book.......2007-02-14
I bought this book, along with Sweet Pea's Garden: Special Things to Make and Do ~ A Flower Fairies Friends Book & How to Host a Flower Fairy Tea Party, to help me with my daughter's fairy birthday party. The crafts are exquisite as well as resonably easy to do. Most items can be easily found around the house or your nearest craft store. I love the crafts in both this and Sweet Pea's Garden. Both books are easy to do although I think Sweet Pea works best for our smaller fairies while this book would be perfect for an upscale girls tea party. I loved the little stories and the illustrations that were woven through the book. The only thing that dissapointed me was that there weren't any recipes. If there had been three or four little recipes that would have rounded out the book perfectly. I fell in love with the little cake in the picture of the table setting at the beginning of chapter three. The crafts included invitations, bookmarks, wings, skirts, fairy dolls with a fairy land playground, jewelry, etc. My favorite crafts were the playground and the blooming tableware. Both were made to decorate my daughters table and they were absolutely beautiful. This made for a magical day. Oh, and there are instructions for a Violet Choker by Heidi Boyd at the DIY website.
Great Birthday Party ideas!.......2005-10-24
We used this little book as the basis for a flower fairy birthday party for a six year old, and it was a huge success, and considerably less expensive than renting Little Gym or another insitutional party place.
We made several decorations and the gorgeous flower fairy wands.
All of the projects would probably require adult assistance for a child under 10, but they are really lovely and worth any effort.
Excellent book of crafts!.......2005-08-18
I bought two copies, one for my 9 yr old daughter and one for her friend. They love it and have had the most fun with these creations. I do recommend a little adult help and guidance with the different crafts.

Book Description
In the 1970s, the West Coast feminist art movement coalesced around the Woman's Building in Los Angeles, founded by artist Judy Chicago. Arriving as a young art student in 1976, Terry Wolverton stayed on to become a teacher and co-founder of the Lesbian Art Project, and eventually, executive director. Her journey-emblematic of many women who sought to redefine themselves in the light of feminism-entails confrontation with the damages of sexism, the pitfalls of utopian community, and the forces of social backlash.
Terry Wolverton is the author of the novel Bailey's Beads, two collections of poetry, Black Slip and Mystery Bruise. She has also edited numerous anthologies of gay and lesbian fiction, including His and Hers (Vols I-III).
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating memoir!.......2003-05-30
What a pleasure to read. Wolverton weaves through the book personal history and her experiences at the Los Angeles Woman's Building to bring art history and feminism in LA to life. Wolverton easily evokes engaging images with just a few strokes of the pen.
I LOVED this book!.......2003-05-21
Terry Wolverton's Insurgent Muse is one of the most powerful, moving memoirs I have ever read. Once I started reading, I literally could not put the book down and stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it. Wolverton writes with insight, courage and humor about her own coming of age as an artist, her coming out as a lesbian, and her experiences with the Los Angeles Woman's Building, not only as an institution but as a vision of a creative, collaborative community of women. Anybody who is interested in the connections between art and politics, especially how artists get politicized and how political art gets made, should read this book. Though there's no happy ending to this story - in that the Woman's Building is no more - I found Insurgent Muse incredibly inspiring and an important reminder that art DOES matter and that sisterhood - however chimerical it sometimes seems - can indeed be powerful.
Excellent book!.......2003-05-12
This book is really two books in one. A facinating look at a pivitol moment in time for women in the arts woven together with the story of the author's own growth and evolution as an artist and a person. A must read for anyone who is interested in modern feminist history.
More than a retrospective.......2003-05-12
Insurgent Muse is much more than a retrospective of feminist art and history. Terry Wolverton has written a personal, honest, detailed history of the venerable Woman's Building. The discovery of self, the intensity of feminist spirit many found at the Woman's Building live on in this wonderful and courageous book.
A historical and memoir masterpiece.......2003-05-10
For those who want to learn about the feminist art movement, "Insurgent Muse" is an informative and insightful book that is deeply complex yet very accessible. This book gives voice to an important but much neglected part of American history. What makes this book so compelling is Wolverton's ability to weave her personal experiences with this political movement. With gorgeous prose and honest and courageous self-exploration, Wolverton shares some valuable life lessons gleaned from some very difficult experiences. In particular, I appreciated her insights about the nature of empowerment and how the artist informs the art and vice versa.
I'm a pretty picky reader. Half the books I begin I never finish because I lose interest. Among those I finish, there are very few that leave a lasting impression. "Insurgent Muse" not only held me captive to the very last page, but it also left me with a feeling of excitement. I highly recommend this book. Read it and you won't be disappointed.
