Book Description
This quintessential guide for aspiring, student, and new pilots answers the questions most often asked about obtaining a pilot's certificate, including: Airplane anatomy, flight theory; GPS navigation and operation; Piloting techniques; Weather: Icing, services, reflight advisories; Instructors and flight schools; costs, time, and more. There is no better guide to the nuts-and-bolts of learning to fly than this classic book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent technical details.......2001-09-18
As other reviewers have alluded to, this book is not a riveting account of bomber combat along the lines of Crosby's "Wing and a Prayer" or Smith's "The Wrong Stuff". That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the book for the extensive technical information on equipment and navigation processes used by B-24 navigators. This title is not simply full of dry information, it contains several interesting anecdotes about the 467th BG and life at Rackheath.
While other reviewers complain that this book is not "exciting" enough, I completely disagree. I have read several "exciting" memoirs written by WWII aircrew members, and to be honest it can sometimes be difficult to differentiate one book from another. The details Stewart provides are what separate this memoir from others out there, giving today's reader a glimpse of the technology and practices of the day.
If like me you have already devoured the "exciting" memoirs, do yourself a favor and pick this one up for a change of pace. While this book would not make a good introduction to 8th AF operations for the uninformed, it more than satisfies for those who enjoy the subject.
give the guy a break.......2000-12-12
Not the most entertaining book but not bad either. Some reviewers have come down a little hard on it.It's a little too technical for some readers but not so filled with errors as some reviewers here claim.Stewart corrects at least one error later in the book. Put it this way:if you want to read just ONE book about bomber crews this isn't the one. It's a little too dry.If you are interested in the subject and can afford to buy several books then this one can be included.
A welcomed addition to any book collection.......2000-05-22
Although there have been several disappointing reviews of this book I personally found it informative from several points. First off my father was a crew member on B-24 Liberators and this gave me an insight as to how a "Liberator" crew flew their missions. As far as being to technical and boring I didn't find it so, there are some missions that were "Milk Runs" but the author points these out prior to reading them and makes up for them with experiences he and his crew had while not flying combat missions. This is also the first book I have read that mentions the "Davis Wing", which I personally found very informative.
Don't spend the money........2000-01-26
There have been a spate of first person accounts of World War II action in the last few years, spawned, I suppose, by the fact that the veterans of that conflict are aging and want to leave a record behind. How disappointing that a young man's war experiences in the extraordinarily dangerous skies of Europe should be so badly presented. There is no life in the narrative and a large (too large) portion is devoted to technical matters and equipment. Perhaps time has diminished the emotions that a 19 year old in flak filled airspace felt and that is too bad. Rather than presenting the survival of his missions -- no mean achievement in itself -- in the fashion he did, it would have been better to have shared a few memories with his family. Don't spend your money on this if you expect the drama, excitement and fear of air combat. If you must read it, get it from a library. I salute the author for his service but not for his writing.
A different perspective of life on a World War II B-24 crew.......1999-06-18
From my perspective as a former Strategic Air Command (SAC) B-47 and B-52H radar navigator (bombardier)who went through nav school in 1950, I found Stewart's book more interesting than the casual reader might, but I can understand the disappointment of the non-professional reader. Nevertheless, his explanations of navigation and his duties were well done, and I especially enjoyed his candid description of life on and off a bomber base during his combat tour in England. .
One glaring mistake was his statement that there were no B-17 units in the 15th Air Force. There were six, including the 98th Bomb Group, which I was later in myself as a B-47 nav in Lincoln, Nebraska, from 1958-60, when it was a wing. I was also surprised to find so many spelling errors, e.g.,intervalometer, especially for a Ph.D. who taught at the University of Michigan, my alma mater. Navigators such as Stewart was in B-24s are indeed relics, as he says, but I don't think the B-52H radar navigators and navigators on crews that operated so successfully in Desert Storm or in Kosovo more recently will agree.

Product Description
Lullabies and Nightmares is a semi-fictional creation. It deals with the practice of Pediatric Medicine as the author lived it. It covers more than fifty-five years of dealing with children and the sweeping changes that took place in the years that he practiced. Dr. Roberts has taken great pains to tell these stories so that real events are portrayed, but the families do not appear as identifiable individuals.

Book Description
Written by the wife of a man with Asperger Syndrome (AS), this book will provide the answers to many of the questions asked by the increasing number of people in that situation. Ashley Stanford explains how behaviors that may have appeared odd - or even downright irritating - are the manifestation of AS, and shows how understanding can lead to change, or to greater tolerance. She provides a wealth of strategies for living successfully with characteristics that cannot be changed, pointing out that AS brings also enormous strengths to a relationship, and emphasizing the value of understanding. Including numerous quotes from people in long-term AS relationships, the book describes many positive solutions that have worked for other couples.
Customer Reviews:
Great Asperger Marriage book.......2007-02-12
This book is outstanding. Anyone living with someone with Aspergers needs to read this book. I am sure this book will help to save many marriages.
Best AS Relationship book I've read.......2007-01-03
I read this book 4 years ago, when I was in a very desperate search for information to save my marriage. Ashley Sanford gave me a lot of hope, where other books on the subject offered little. This book made a big difference in my approach to issues in my relationship and I highly recommend it to anyone in a relationship with a partner on the spectrum.
The author is real sweet but she doesn't know much or wright it great!.......2006-11-15
With this book had a few pages I really liked but other then that as the author says at the end she wrote this mostly for herself (That's not so great) and it defiantly showed. The little she wrote I liked like the one page on sex and the disorder isn't found anywhere else but almost all the rest of the info is and is delivered elsewhere better. She states she was pretty ignorant before her limited research and I could tell prior to her statement of it and frankly now she may be more informed but she still has along way to go and some of her assumptions which she states as facts are also wrong. But, she is right that a book like hers is well needed and the fact she acted on that is great. The fact that she deals with someone like her husband as well as she does and her commitment to her kids with it and without are also admirable. But, couldn't someone tell her stuff like that 70-75% of the people with this also have ADD/ADDHd? Which IS a fact.Ask the leading guy on the topic who she admires so much Tony Attword. She needs to know the area better herself and needs to do better research on it especially with her job being what it is in life and as a mother with 3 kids and a husband with it.
Well written book.......2005-07-25
Well written book by one strong woman. What about a woman like that for me too? I have Aspergers. Ashley Stanford really lays out good arguments about why people with Aspergers can marry and not believe garbage that Aspies should be forced celibates. She said being told you shouldn't marry is like telling Rosa Parks to sit only in the back of the bus. Fact is Aspies just function differently than the normal person and the rules of marriage are altered. People with Aspergers just communicate differently. The best communication is on a phone, text messaging, or talking to your partner in the dark where body language is useless. Body language is the key to understanding the opposite sex, we Aspies just are worse than the average guy at understanding it. Should be required reading for psychiatrists and pyschologists who think Aspies should live lives of forced celibacy. Perhaps I bought the book because I had a female friend in high school named Ashley, and she was gorgeous, too.
Aspie (and all) marriages are works in progress.......2004-04-12
In this book a woman tells of the joys and struggles of living with a husband and children who have Asperger Syndrome. She also draws on the experiences of others who have had lived with "Aspie" partners. She honestly describes her own difficulties understanding and translating her husband's reactions into her own more emotionally demonstrative frame of reference.
I got the impression that she would have liked her husband to write more about his perspective on their relationship. He does give some information but he is not an "express your emotions" type of guy.
I have refered several people to this book. It is good for individuals who are learning to appreciate and deal with a family member with Aspergers. At the same time this book has something to say for any couple who despite vast differences, strive to understand each other and make a long term relationship work.

Huge about of information, easy to read. One weakness is coverage of the sparkling wines from areas such as Australia / New Zealand / USA
An affair to remember.......2006-11-10
This is a great book for anyone - from those who have the resources to buy some of the top names and remarkable vintages noted in this book to those simply in love with this beverage. I fall, sadly, under the latter category with the fervent hope that someday I will fall under both.
I derived hours of enjoyment from flipping through the different producers, although I found that after an hour I had a tremendous taste for anything Krug. Odd, that.
One of the "features" of this book that I appreciate the most is the "Why is [Krug/Salon/etc] so Special?" Books that extract essential information from the text and display them in sidebars usually help the reader gain a better understanding of the topic. It certainly does so in this case.
Excellent overall with many minor glitches.......2005-11-07
He has a thoroughly enjoyable writing style (especially the puns) with superb information. I use the book very frequently when purchasing. These errors are minor but the sheer quantity of them seems inexcusable, especially in an encyclopedia and in an edition that has been "fully revised and updated".
*The book does not explain the difference between "organic" and "bio-diversity" and the glossary makes them seem to be the same.
*He uses the term "stone-fruit" to describe flavours and/or aromas but does not break this down. Stone fruit can include cherries, chokecherries, peaches, apricots, plums, dates, nectarines, etc. (each being prevalent in some wines) - what does he mean?
*He uses the term "foursquare" frequently in describing a wine but provides no definition. I realize it is probably a British phrase but the book is sold world-wide.
*He alludes to bottle shape possibly having some influence on the development of a wine's character but does not develop this thought.
*There is superb, poor and inconsistent punctuation throughout the book. There are incorrect verb tenses. There are hundreds of places where commas would clarify meaning and ease the reader's experience. There are many double spaces between words within a sentence. Any word processing program should have caught this, and most of the spelling and grammar ones.
*In a few instances, he disparages plastic corks. Yet, in other instances, he laments that bad corks ruined some wonderful Champagnes he was sampling. Readers would benefit from a more detailed explanation.
*Sometimes he harshly criticizes a label design but he doesn't reproduce it to illustrate his point. Since labels are important to his rating system, this would be instructive. I realize space is at a premium, but it would be more beneficial than seeing another photo of another vineyard.
*It would help a great deal if he noted the date he tasted a wine. Readers could extrapolate from the copyright to the products they have available.
Extremely useful for anyone who buys sparkling wine regularly.......2005-10-20
In 1986 Tom Stevenson released his "Champagne" and established himself as a premier expert in bubbly wines. In this volume, he expands his range beyond the French region and considers other fizzy grape juice, both in France, and worldwide. This is a welcome release by an author who is thoughtful and makes positive contributions to wine scholarship, criticism, and appreciation.
Critics of Stevenson often take issue with minor errors and typos in his trade paperback books (pocket buying guides). My observation is Stevenson's bookshelf reference works have all the careful editing you would expect for a premium product. I still find myself frequently reading his original tasting notes and information in his now 20 year old "Champagne."
Stevenson's critics often take issue with his palate, selections, and emphasis. My own view is these critics are unfair. A serious wine drinker, who reads and thinks about wine, should keep first and foremost in mind their own preferences, while also developing ability to distinguish grapes and terroir. These objective skills, then coupled with self knowledge, let one understand and appreciate another wine critic's points of emphasis and preference. Almost anyone understands that Robert Parker's early views were heavily emphasized by a preference for sweet fruit, low acid, and his abiding love of stickies. Only after years have Parker's criticisms of dryer and more tannic wines become more balanced. Stevenson deserves similar sympathy and respect.
A fundamental question then is: is this book worth it? For those who both like to drink, read, and think about wine, the answer is an unreserved yes. In addition, even for the casual consumer this work can help you save money on purchases. But the primary audience is wine geeks who like to try everything and think about it. Stevenson's notes are now more global, and hence slightly less detailed than his earlier works. Make no mistake, Stevenson's preferences are not mine, however I often find myself turning to him for advice on selections when I need to entertain and have competing goals of budget and food matching. Worth every penny.

A pamphlet for the Prairie.......2000-06-27
Creating a Wildflower Meadow is quite short, more of a pamphlet than a book, but what it lacks in length, it makes up for with information. The text is simple, direct and informative. It is divided into two sections: the first describes the process of creating the meadow. The second section is a flower-by-flower description of North American wildflowers. There is a detailed line drawing of each plant. The drawings are black and white.
This book is well worth the small investment required.
Creating a Wildflower Meadow.......2000-06-22
Concise and informative, this thirty-two page book is certainlyworth the ..[money]. It contains useful charts and lists to guide thereader in choosing meadow flowers and grasses appropriate to their region and design scheme.
Customer Reviews:
Not Intended for Parents.......2005-11-10
This book is interesting and has useful information about one teacher's experience with integrated playgroups in an academic setting, but it is written like an academic thesis or research paper rather than a layman's book. It will not teach you how to set up playdates in your home or how to structure a playdate so your child will play with other children.
For those hoping for a how-to book with guidelines for setting up playdates and teaching playskills to autistic children, I recommend you look at Melinda Smith's website and/or book, "Teaching Playskills to Children with ASD" which has lots of advice and ideas for teaching basic playskills.
For another book which emphasizes the importance of play and how to use play to improve a child's cognitive and emotional skills, I recommend you peruse "The Child With Special Needs" by Stanley Greenspan. This book gives parents lots of practical ideas for trying to engage an unresponsive child, establishing 2-way communication, helping a child understanding feelings and ideas, and helping a child to think logically.
Not a how-to manual :(.......2001-06-13
An interesting book about the author's experience with integrated play groups, but I was hoping for more of a how-to about setting up such playdates/groups myself with my mildly autistic son and typically developing kids around the neighborhood, etc...
There are only three case studies too, making this book more valuable to teachers than parents, because if your child isn't similar to one of the three cases, then the book won't be as relevant.
A "must have" for teachers........2000-09-05
...It is very thorough and gives insights to help betterunderstand how and why children with autism play the way they tend to, and, how to break them out of unproductive/unhealthy play habits. A very good book!
