page 144, 1977 reprint. Picture caption: "The walnut harvest in the Dordogne in southwestern France. Nuts are beaten from the trees with long poles. There is an ancient saying that walnuts, dogs, and w*m*n are all improved by a good beating from time to time." yeah he really spelt it "w*m*n" with the stars.

The book is a tree dictionary + alot of info a gardener might need, like times of year of tree flowering, hardiness maps, etc. So you can probably find that stuff in another book, if you want to, and avoid the "weirdo factor" of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Essential guide for a tourist or native.......2005-06-23

I bought this book when I first moved to Southern CA, and it's a staple for referencing any trip I want to take in the area. I am confused about any "political" leanings that the other reviewers have mentioned. I use this for any attraction or site I am considering visiting, and I don't dwell on Ms. Weir's personal views on the Southern CA area, ecology, or business. This is a wonderful part of the country, and don't let a few not-so-positive remarks ruin your visit. Focus instead on the practical information found in this guidebook.

When friends have seen me using this book, they've liked it so much that they go out and buy their own copy.

For each area, in addition to major attractions, the book covers little holes-in-the-wall in the form of restaurants and clubs, or seldom mentioned LA landmarks. I've learned a lot of history from this book, and it makes me a better tour guide when I have friends visit. This book is exhaustive on the subject of Southern CA, covering any area I can dream of wanting to visit. It would take years to visit all the places mentioned in here.

1 out of 5 stars When is a travel guide not a travel guide?.......2005-06-03

Why, when it's a course in left wing propaganda, like this book. I guess the left just can't shut up, but then, why should they when they have all the answers and are so superior to everyone else? The Nixon profile was really over the top, blandly asserting that he was responsible for the Pol Pot genocide in Cambodia. The left has been peddling that hogwash for decades and I'm sure they'll never learn any better, which is pitiful. But what is this sick, tired spew doing in a travel guide to southern California?

5 out of 5 stars Excelent for exploring Southern CA..........2005-04-23

I have lived in CA for the last 20 years. With this book I have found and explored many places that I had never heard of before. The information is very useful and easy to understand. I am unsure what the other reviewers "political" issues with this book were but I did not have the same experience. This book lives in my car in case we find ourselves on an impulse trip and need more information. I even bought a copy for my parents and they raved about it as well.

1 out of 5 stars Unreadable guide to California.......2004-06-19

I've used Moon Handbooks as a guide for my last few vacations, but Southern California by Kim Weir is the last one I will ever buy. The author's bias and political views are inappropriate for this type of book and laid on so thick that it's almost impossible to read more than a few pages at a time without retching. The background information doesn't even make California sound like a desirable place to visit!

The only saving grace may be Moon's rich catalog of things to see and do, but this information is rendered untrustworthy due to the extreme bias.

This guide does a disservice to California and anybody who reads it. Do not buy this book.

Get ready, investors: the graying of America, the resurgence of Japan, global warming, and six other major trends will jar the world's stock markets in the next century. "Because the changing world continually buffets the markets, we cannot blindly throw money into stocks, into mutual funds, or into a bank account," warns leading economist Todd G. Buchholz in Market Shock. Instead, investors must be prepared to capitalize on opportunities as they unfold, says Buchholz, also the author of the bestseller New Ideas from Dead Economists. For instance, with the aging of baby boomers, savvy investors should begin moving into health-care and pharmaceutical stocks. And with the prospect of global warming, investors should consider insurance companies that are avoiding coverage of homes in low-lying coastal regions. The other six economic and social trends: a boom in minority populations; the biotechnology and information revolutions; China's growing importance in the global economy; a possible jump in crime; the potential failure of European unity; and the rising fees and slumping performance of mutual funds.

Buchholz begins each chapter with a futuristic gloom-and-doom scenario and a fictional news flash. Without naming particular companies, he then describes the sorts of investments likely to flourish during those events. Market Shock can help people sidestep some investing minefields and possibly profit from some major trends that could transform the world's economies. --Dan Ring

    Book Description

In Market Shock, leading global economist Todd G. Buchholz analyzes nine trends that will turn America's economy on its head. For the unprepared, these tremors may bring about financial ruin. But for the savvy investor, these widespread changes offer tremendous opportunities to make money.

Using this book, investors can anticipate these trends, not just avoiding the coming crisis but making money by moving assets to sectors of the economy that stand to benefit from these cultural and economic shifts. Filled with lively "news flash" scenarios, plentiful examples, and helpful advice, Buchholz pinpoints the issues that will affect investors and consumers over the next several decades. This book--insightful, impeccably reasoned, and eminently readable-could not have come at a better time.

5 out of 5 stars Buchholz should be on the fed!.......2006-01-30

Buchholz is truly an economic prophet, and he brings wit to the table as well. I thought this book, in addition to his previous masterpieces, was a wonderful, informative, helpful, entertaining read. Well done, Buchholz!

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining Light Reading.......2000-06-26

The terms "Upheavals" and "Market Shock" should not be used to describe the subject matter in this book since it consists entirely of slow, gradual changes in demographics. These changes are only discussed in the most general of terms. There is not one chart or graph in this book. The lack of a timeline makes it impossible to do any serious financial planning. Most of these changes will not have a major effect on the U.S. economy until after most of us are dead and buried.

Unfortunately, the financial advice in this book is very limited, consisting mainly of common sense items, such as, "Learn to broil a trout." The useful information in each chapter can be summed up in one sentence: Chapter 1: Americans are aging. They will need health care and retirement homes. Chapter 2: Science is cool, but make sure that a lot of people will pay for it before investing. Chapter 3: Mutual fund fees are too high. (Also contains the crazy theory that all funds will collapse when people figure out they are not FDIC insured.) Chapter 4: One day, white people will be the minority in America. Chapter 5: The Japanese are getting older, too. Chapter 6: Europe needs Euro-denominated junk bonds. Chapter 7:China has a tough row to hoe. Chapter 8: The crime rate will rise. Chapter 9: There's that global warming thing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical trivia. On the one hand, I read every page in this book. On the other hand, I don't expect to ever make a dime off of anything that I learned.

5 out of 5 stars Can you believe, an economics page turner!.......1999-11-19

We all see the changes that are taking place around us (such as the graying of America). This book takes those changes and puts them into perspective with actionable information. I kept slapping my forehead and saying, "I know this, why didn't I see where it leads?" Buchholz makes sense out of our everyday observations and puts them into economic context.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and prophetic told with humor and intelligence.......1999-09-17

A rare book on the economy that is actually interesting and fun to read. Buchholz has taken a very clever approach to making his point (with mini-novellas) that are both insightful and well researched. And humourous. Raises some serious concerns about the not too distant future that we should all be looking at as we contemplate our next investment.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase for novice investor........1999-08-18

This is an excellent book for a novice investor. It offers timely advice n a witty and informative manner. I would certainly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Ideas more than instructions.......2007-02-18

This book has many ideas, but if you're more of a beginner, you probably won't be able to duplicate a lot of what you see. Still, as more of a beginner myself, I was able to mark several pages that I can go back to for ideas.

        3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2006-06-27

This book was just okay for me. I thought it would have actual step-by-step instructions, but it seems it only contains pictures, and list of items used. It's okay for reference if you want to "copy" the card as best you can.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Great Book for Tag and Card Ideas - Especially nice for Scrapbookers.......2006-02-22

I've been looking for a book that focused only on ideas for tags and cards. THIS IS IT! I am so excited and happy I purchased this book, sight unseen. Especially with the crafts books, I try to check them out of the library to make sure it is what I want, but the library did not have it yet.

Every page has something that inspires me to be creative with gift tags for my scrapbooking. I had hit a "scrapper's block" and even though I have plenty of scrap info books which show lots of pages, tags, etc., the depiction from those books were not what I had in mind. I wanted a book that showed various ideas for taking my scrap pages to another level. It's really a beautifully photgraphed book that shows all kinds of styles and projects. Everything from simple-classy (like the picture on the cover) to the more embellished tags using ribbon, raffia and other 3 dimensional objects. There are even templates in the back of the book. This book covers cards and tags of everything from birthday and seasonal items to invitations and holidays.

Each tag includes the designer of the tag and supplies used. One minor quibble is there are no specific instructions. The photos are so clear, I really don't think you will need step-by steps for most of the examples. There are a few exceptions where I think it would have been nice to know "how they did that." For example, on page 7 is a tag that uses a stamp and layered papers. The top stamped design is bordered by a wispy stringed edge. It was not clear if this was sewn on or glued. It also was not clear whether the edge was loose threads or some type of trim. In the supplies list, there is not a mention of any relavent product. For that reason I am giving this book a 4.75 for those VERY FEW projects that don't clear state the supply list or tell how it was created. The majority of the other projects in this book are clear and only a scant few could have been elaborated on.

If you can only afford to buy one tags book, this needs to be the one. I also bought Tags Reinvented by Erikia Ghumm, which is nice (see other review), but this book, "It's All About Cards and Tags" is far superior.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book!!.......2005-08-29

This is the greatest book I own. It is full of ideas and projects that I actually use. Instructions are simple and easy to understand. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea Book.......2005-07-18

If you loke to make cards and tags or are just starting out. I recommend this book. It has 55 pages with many ideas per page. At the end of the book there is 5 pages of templates for envelopes, tags, boxes and more. In the center is 2 pages of vellum quotes to rip out and use.
        Table of Contents include:
        Friendship
        Keeping In Touch
        Memorable Moments
        Terms of Endearment
        Invites

There is many ideas, tecniques, quotes, tips and more in this wonderful book. I get scrappers block and this book really helps out. I totally recommend this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Superlative.......2004-01-20

This book is a guide to gardening techniques to maximize the nutrition you can get from your garden. The book begins by explaining how nutrients begin to disappear the instant a fruit or vegetable is harvested. Minnich describes how a green pepper, for instance loses much of its potential nutritional value as it is plucked in the field and shipped to the warehouse, and then trucked across the country, then stored in a refrigerator, then sliced to appear on an appetizer plate and made to sit for several hours. Minnich also points out that Americans are eating far fewer fresh vegetables and fruits than ever before, while consuming many more processed foods, from which the vitamins and minerals have been oxidized or cooked. After reading this chapter, it becomes crystal clear why health food enthusiasts talk so much about the importance of buying locally grown produce in season- -by the time "fresh" fruits and vegetables reach a far-away supermarket, nutritionally, they're hardly better than the plastic they're wrapped in. (But they're still better than highly processed food likes chips or canned veggies.) Minnich argues that if you want to enjoy the highest levels of nutrition, you should eat produce within hours of harvest, the harvesters should be careful how and when they harvest, and there should be a minimum of processing, including slicing.

In a chapter on building soil for nutrition, Minnich points out that soil scientists have rarely taken up the question of how to prepare soil to grow fruits and vegetables that are nutritious. There has been quite a lot of research devoted to plant nutrition, how to make a plant grow vigorously and have large yields. There has been a small amount of research on how to grow crops to provide the nutritional needs of cattle. But nobody has investigated how to grow crops that provide a maximum of vitamins and minerals needed by humans. Minnich suggests that in order to maximize human nutrition rather than plant nutrition, the most important factors are soil structure and micronutrients. He argues that these can best be supplied by organic composting and soil building techniques rather than with chemical fertilizers, which may feed the plant, but won't necessarily result in more nutritious products for humans.

Later chapters cover such topics as planning (choosing the most nutritious things to grow and the best varieties), harvest, storage, and preparation, and growing for nutrition. One of the best features of the book is its high quality comparison charts for nutrition. Using these charts, which list values for such things as iron, calcium, and vitamin C, Minnich points out some surprising facts. For example, a serving of watermelon has more iron than a serving of spinach; and if you grow turnip greens, you should make a point of eating the greens, since they are quite nutritious, while the turnips themselves are almost nutritional zeroes. Sources are very well documented with endnotes. There is also a short list of recommended reading items and an index.

I have found this to be my most important gardening resource. In fact, even while living in an apartment where I had no opportunity to garden, I still found much of the information in this book about such things as how to prepare foods for maximum nutrition (or not prepare them) invaluable. The book has helped me choose the best plants to grow in my garden and enabled me to become almost nutritionally self-sufficient. I would recommend it to anyone who gardens, cooks, or eats.

My grandmother gave me this book about 6 months before she passed away. It helped her through my granfathers death and now it is helping me through hers.
This book is very short, to the point and not a bunch of psychological mumbo jumbo. It is refreshing, easy to read and interesting. You don't feel like you have to have a psychology degree in order to analyze your feelings to work through them. If you are looking for a difficult, heavy read, this is the wrong book for you. Expect to feel enlightened when you are done not analyzed.

              Book Description

A great artist offers every young ballerina an invitation to the dance.

The dance paintings of Edgar Degas are beloved around the world. For the first time, here is a book that reveals the intriguing world of ballet dancers behind the scenes-as shown exclusively through the life and work of Degas.

Observing the young students, called petits rats, Degas discovered that ballet training is much like creating art: it takes hard work and practice. As the "little rats" repeated their steps, Degas drew their poses again and again, for like the ballerinas, he was determined to achieve perfection. More than 30 Degas paintings and drawings capture each step of the journey from little girl to prima ballerina in this absorbing picture-book biography.

              1 out of 5 stars Dissapointment.......2007-10-17

This book has neither fulfilled my expectations on Degas nor provided his most distinguished paintings. The dance theme is not properly supported with the paintings. Additionally the quality of colour separations is very poor. I have also found the page designs unsatisfactory. A typical rough American approach to European Art.

5 out of 5 stars A review of the BOOK...........2006-01-04

I see the other reviewer has reviewed AMAZON's delivery service and not the actual book... Which is a pity. Because the book is truly gorgeous and an amazing source of knowledge to those who's interested in Degas. It has an incredible amount of picture documentation, as well as tons of interesting written material. It shows in particular how Degas to some extent understood the world of ballet so well he was able to correct the petite ballet rats if they showed an imperfect technique...

It also displays much interesting info about the two old Parisian opera houses Rue Peletier (destroyed in a fire) and Palais Garnier (still existing and in use).

And last, but not least, it shows Degas's various motifs, techiques and ideas. I love this book most of all the arts book I have, and though sligthly expensive I found it to be worth every penny.
