Book Description
As one of the founding leaders of the health food movement in the 1970s, and host of the longest-running radio show in America, New York Times bestselling author Gary Null has provided an inspiring voice for growing up healthy-and growing older wisely. But as Null makes clear in this groundbreaking book, growing older doesn't mean having to look it, feel it, or accept it.
In fact, it's easier than ever to fight the symptoms of age and feel as young as one wants-especially with the program outlined in this book. Based on sensible science and mind-over-body techniques, readers can:
Combine nutrition, exercise, lifestyle changes, and mental techniques
Control the visible-and invisible-signs of aging
Combat age-related conditions and illnesses
Customer Reviews:
Power Aging, or what is wrong with the NHS.......2007-08-31
The drugs you get through the NHS and by prescription mostly have side-effects, and the effect wears off. The herbal remedies you read about here do not have side-effects, and you can benefit from them indefinitely. Antibiotics now have reduced effectiveness because of MRSA and clostridium difficile, so if you boost your immune system with herbal remedies, you can protect yourself from infections more easily.
Null and Void.......2007-08-27
After reading Gary Null's book, I was disappointed, because I was expecting to learn more than what I already know. Also, the repetition in this book was obnoxious. There were a couple of things that didn't ring true and I circled them for further research. If anyone has felt that anything in this book was not exactly accurate, I would love to hear from you. On a scale of 1 - 10, I give it a 4.
Great life plan!.......2007-07-16
Wonderful information in easy to read and understand language. Puts you on your way to a healthy lifestyle.
medical self defense.......2007-05-12
Read Gary Null and you'll undoubtedly know more than your doctor, even your specialists. And you'd better know what they don't know or they might injure you without meaning to. It's happened to me.
Nothing New.......2007-03-10
Unlike books by some anti-aging practitioners who seem to publish in order to advertise their HRT programs, Gary Null's agenda is not so obvious. He claims that his book is different from the rest, but that's only because he has included a bit more information on environmental factors and their effects on aging at the beginning. Hence, he recommendations safe and organic food sources.
Apart from that, I see nothing new. The same old glossary of supplements, the same old recipes that no one has time to prepare and recommendations on exercise which only show that the author is far from an expert in this area.
However, I'm surprised that the author actually gave "natural" alternatives to hormone replacement. I'm not sure if the supplements really work, but at least he's not pushing HRT and making light of potential side effects even in expert hands.
Not a fantastic book but still quite informative for those who haven't already read a hundred books on anti-aging.

Customer Reviews:
One healthy reader.......2006-10-31
Gary Null's Gary Null's Mind Power: Rejuvenate Your Brain and Memory Naturally is a fine resource on brain chemestry and overall health. It covers supplements and conditions and offers natural solutions to mind/health related issues including depression, fatigue, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease to headaches. The final chapters on Psychoneuroimmunology and Mind Power Meals wrap up Mind Power with many healthful, motivational tools and ideas.
excellent.......2006-06-28
Mind Power is a book that everybody ought to read. As usual Gary Null is straightforward and down to earth. Prevention of diseases is the best way to stay healthy
An exceptional companion.......2006-05-01
This book is very knowledgeable, and different from other 'brain health' books in many ways. Null gets specific on certain disorders and ailments, and describes in laymens terms what everything means and why his advice works. This book does not recieve five stars from me because his suggestions for a life makeover are quite radical and somewhat unrealistic. For example, Null states how we should avoid Casien proteins, never eat meat, only eat wild fish and avoid dairy completely - he doesnt even imply moderation. I believe there can be a healthy and mututal symbiosis in all the diatary food groups, Null wont acknowledge it.
I do however VERY much enjoy his recipies for food and shakes. They are quite tasty and exceptionally healthy. I can agree with the whole concept of organic foods and excercise for each diet he perscribes. The best thing about the book are Null's exceptional understanding of suplementation. Null goes in depth and reccomends the best supplements combinations I have ever seen. The supplement listings and recipies are the main reasons I purchased this book. I am a mere 20 years old, and like Null says, "Prevention is the best medicine". I highly reccomend this book for college students and middle aged men and women.
Great Way to Stay Sharp!.......2006-03-09
This informative book is an interesting journey into improving brain functions with healthy lifestyles and natural supplementation instead of toxic, expensive chemicals that are so commonly used by millions looking for a memory boost, happiness, a solution to brain fog or other mental tasks. What a healthy, safe alternative to drugs and the expectance of diminished brain power from "old age"!
Brain Food= Better Memory, Better Focus, More Energy!!!.......2006-03-06
Mind Power is a very informative and fascinating look into the brain and how it works. It includes real stories by real people struggling with the challenges of everyday life and the more life threatening diseases.Insomnia, depression and Alzheimer's are just a few of the afflictions discussed. I am a visual artist and sometimes I have to work with toxic materials. For many years now I have had spells of insomnia, memory loss, lack of focus and energy. Sometimes, it was hard just to get out of bed each morning. I was in awe while reading this book because I felt like it was really talking to "Me"! I have been following one of the protocols for 2 months now. I already see and feel a tremendous difference in my memory, clarity and focus. I have renewed energy and I no longer suffer from insomnia! Mind Power helped me to understand the biological and chemical reactions which were taking place in my brain and body from all the toxicity in my life. Dr.Gary Null clearly illustrates the true meaning of "cause and effect". I will always continue my work as an artist, but I now feel like I have the tools to prevent any further damage. From the physical to the mental to the emotional and to the spiritual, this book beautifully covers it all. An inspiration for life! Thanks Gary Null.

Book Description
Soul food embodies the best of American cooking-it's tasty, homegrown, and redolent of the country's multiethnic history. In New Soul Cooking, the Food Network's Tanya Holland redefines this much-loved cuisine, introducing fresh and healthy ingredients, modern cooking styles, and global flavors.
From Africa to the Caribbean, Brazil, and the American South, Holland shows how African flavors fused with existing cooking traditions created the basis for soul food. She combines this now traditional style with fresh flavor combinations and cooking techniques, to create soul food cooking for a new generation of home cooks and chefs.
The 90 delicious creations in New Soul Cooking-from Black-eyed Pea and Country Ham Chowder to Pecan-Crusted Boneless Chicken Breasts and Confetti Cornbread-reinvigorate the concept of soul food. Luscious color photographs of many of these dishes introduce new presentation ideas, reinforcing Holland's belief that a color palette is as important as a wonderful flavor palate.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional cookbook for novices and beyond!.......2005-10-04
I am a novice who was given this book as a gift. I have to say, this book is perfect for beginners like me, as well as cooks that are more experienced. As someone who is intimidated by most cookbooks, I'll tell you why this book put me at ease:
Beautiful color photography! I don't know why some cookbooks either have no pictures, or bad illustrations. I like seeing what my goal is. And frankly, the pics look so tasty, it
was quite motivating.
Short list of ingredients. This was key for making me feel like the brown sugar and pineapple glazed ribs are obtainable. Let me tell you, they SO are!! And, I didn't have to search high and low for the ingredients. Whole Paycheck had everything I needed.
Anyway, this cookbook put me as ease, and the result has been several dinner parties where my friend's jaws clearly dropped below the dinner table.
Thank you, Tanya Holland, for inspiring me to cook more, and taking my flavors to an entirely new level!!
Recipes don't work.......2004-12-26
I got this book to cook a traditional Christmas dinner for my family and friends, and I was so disappointed. I would not recommend this book. The recipes were not great. The photographs can be very deceptive. The banana pudding was mere mush. The 'yassa' chicken was disappointing and not to mention demoralizing. As a black woman, I am trying to get away from the 'yess sah' notion. Go elsewhere for true Southern cooking. No wonder there are so many of her books in the 'used' section for under $6.
NOT GOOD AT ALL, if you want southern cooking...........2004-12-20
go for Frank Stitt's Southern Table which is what a real Southern cooking book should be. This book is very pretty, but not well written. It's simply kitschy, and the recipes are not good at all. I made several things from this book, and they did not work. I would not advise buying this book. I'm sorry, but Tanya Holland is not a 'real' chef, maybe one of those many people who write cookbooks and put in pretty pictures to sell it. Just my personal opinion.
TERRIBLE FOR THE PRICE!!!.......2004-10-09
I ordered this book through a bookclub and returned it. It was terrible! Tanya Holland is a beautiful Black woman, but I feel has gone too far out of the way to create "innovative and different" recipes so much that they are not appealing and certainly should not be categorized as soul food. The price is outrageous for the handful of recipes that were chosen for this cookbook. I collect african american/soul food cookbooks among others. If you are really into soul food cookbooks and what they really represent, your money would be better spent on "Essence Brings you Great Cooking" by Jonell Nash, "The Ebony Cookbook" by Freida DeKnight or "The Black Family Reunion Cookbook" by the The National Council of Negro Women. If you are interested in healthier soul food try, "The New Ebony Cookbook" by Charlotte Lyons or "The Family Dinner Quilt Cookbook" by The National Council of Negro Women. If you are interested in diverse, cultural flavors, I would recommend Vertamae Grosvenor's cookbooks or "Iron Pots and Wooden Spoons" by Jessica B. Harris. I have collected over 50 african american soul food cookbooks. They cover the gamut. That is why I can give an honest opinion on Tanya Holland's book. I just wish that she would publish an african american cookbook that the average African American can relate to. One that would be useful to families in their everyday cooking.
FABULOUS.......2004-06-16
Brilliant, Beautiful and Bold. I know it sounds like a soap opera, but those are really the best words to describe Tanya's New Soul Cooking. It's a must - have for all food enthusiasts. Her passion is infectious--don't even attempt to read this book without a fully stocked pantry. You'll want to get cooking immediately!

Book Description
THE POPULAR FOX TERRIER By the Rev. A.J. Skinner. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. This scarce early work on the Fox Terrier was first published in 1926 and is now extremely hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and illustrations as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was founder of the Borlase Fox Terrier Kennels, and contributed much of interest to Fox Terrier literature. His terriers won many championship shows and were much sought after as breeding stock. The book consists of one hundred and forty pages containing eleven detailed chapters: The Fox Terrier as a Hobby and as a Pal. - Standard and Requirements. - Principles of Breeding. Mendels Law, Pedigrees, Out Crossing etc. - Pertinacity in Breeding. - Preparing for Show. - The Working Fox Terrier. - As an Earth Dog. - Feeding. - Ailments. - Management. - Present Day Champions and their Pedigrees. - Trimming a Wire Fox Terrier. - Breeders, Exhibitors and Judges. Etc. The contents are well illustrated with line drawings and vintage black and white photographs of champions and their pedigrees. The publishers have also retained several pages of original advertisements for Fox Terrier kennels etc. This is a fascinating read for any Fox Terrier enthusiast or historian of the breed, but also contains much information that is still practical and useful today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book Description
In the new genre of 'mommy lit,' acclaimed English novelist Rachel Cusk's A Life's Work: On Becoming a Mother uniquely combines a literary sensibility with searing emotional honesty in her quest to reclaim her former self after giving birth. In the words of novelist Helen Dunmore, it is 'a deeply fascinating read, a nakedly honest, witty, and eloquent exploration of the world of mother and child, where each of us began.'
Customer Reviews:
great read.......2007-07-26
I found this book very interesting to read, especially since I've never had a baby and was curious about what motherhood is really like. I enjoyed the honesty of the author which gave me a great insight into the challenges that you face as a new mom. None of my friends with kids have ever talked this candidly about their motherhood experience. They always just say "It's great!"
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever thought about having a baby. This book will lay out the Pros and Cons for you!
Excellent, thought-provoking book.......2007-03-02
This was one of those books that was meaningful in large part because of its timing. I read this book when my daughter was one year old, and it just really rang a lot of bells for me. I was really trying to make sense of all I was going through - in terms of the process of motherhood, staying home with babies, leaving career, and abandoning my peer groups. It was really kind of dark humor and a little depressing -- but appropriately so -- given the difficulty of the transition. The first chapter was devoted to the process of preparing for birth, and her cynical observations combined with her own fear hit home in a big way.
Cusk's analysis of the roller-coaster emotions associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and new parenthood will resonate as truth among many new, and even seasoned, mothers. Highly recommended to all those who are seeking a thoughtful analysis of the process of becoming a mother.
Great content, tedious presentation.......2006-10-13
I was looking for another new mom to commiserate with--and I found it in Rachel Cusk! BUT... my brain is fried--I have a new baby! How the heck am I supposed to concentrate to read this book?! It is obviously written for students of literature. I caught some glimpses of her in there, but mostly she was writing to hear herself talk. Which is ok for a work of literature, but I was just looking for a fun non-fiction read.
A voice not heard.......2006-09-12
I was not familiar with Ms.Cusk's work prior to reading this book. I am a new mother and A Life's Work was recommended to me.
Her voice is one that is not heard in books about motherhood. My thougths echoed in her words.
Pregnancy and motherhood has been humbling, humiliating and exhausting. I love my daughter but I never could have anticipated the emotional journey I was embarking on.
Rachel Cusk does not put a pretty pink wash on everything. It is a clean true voice.
I recommend this book to any woman trying to find where she has gotten lost in her life.
I could relate.......2006-02-26
This is a starkly honest, almost poetically written, book that made me both cringe and laugh. It will be most enjoyed by a very cerebral reader who has experienced some disappointment in birth or mothering an infant (e.g., postpartum depression, inability to breastfeed, unexpected C-section). I would not recommend it for pregnant women or cheerful people who are intent on only seeing the best in a situation. This is mothering at its worst, though infused with love. The section on men who blow the cover on women who hide the difficulties in mothering is very humorous and worth reading. For those who wonder why the author couldn't cope better, this section describes the sort of conspiracy among mothers that prevents total honesty. At any rate, it's very well-written and will elicit nods of recognition and relief from those who've "been there." You know who you are.
