Book Description
James W. Johnston was a self-confessed small-town youth, who like so many others patriotically stopped what he was doing and enlisted shortly after Pearl Harbor. Johnston chose the Marines, a decision that sent him to years of bloody combat through the Pacific as Allied troops fought their way toward the Japanese home islands. Many did not come back; of those who did, very few have told us what it was like. Johnston tells us directly and honestly, taking us with his First Marine Division through New Guinea, New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa.
Customer Reviews:
Good insights.......2001-12-17
James Johnston gave a vivid, poignant and heroic account of his life with the Marines fighting in the Pacific during World War II. It was fascinating to read how it life was for the Marines in the Pacific as like he said, the media tended to focus on the European theater and thought of the Pacific theater as "easy."
Using letters that he wrote home, Johnston managed to add a personal touch to his account. It was interesting to get a glimpse on how he felt emotionally, the friendship that was formed between the soldiers and how a lot of times, soldiers are fighting as hard as they did, for their friends because they did not want to let their them down. When Johnston was the section leader, he was able to show the burden of responsibilities as you were not just in charge of your life but of others too.
Lastly, how he was disappointed with the Marines. He found flaws with the system but at the same time, it was very much part of him.
Excellent Story of the Human Side of War.......2000-05-06
"The Long Road of War" is a wonderfully-written, highly-emotional story of Marine Corps combat from the "flat-trajectory" soldier's perspective. Johnston shares his own personal horrific views of World War II Pacfic combat. With stirring text, he shows the sudden transformation from Nebraska teenager to Green recruit to hardened veteran. This book is an excellent addition to any historian's bookshelf, once they can find the time to put it down.
A brutally honest memoir from a front line Marine.......1999-12-03
This was a book that I could absolutely not put down. Mr. Johnston's description of his transition from a Midwest teenager into a battle hardened, front line Marine is told with a grim honesty that is seldom found in books about war. This book does away with any glorification or self-promotion and gives you the tragic, ugly truth about the war in the South Pacific.

Depending Upon Your Diagnosis, Keep an Open Mind .......2007-01-13
Although technically well done, radiation therapy may not be the answer or at least the whole answer to prostate cancer treatment and survival. You will need to consult a number of current references on the broad subject of prostate cancer, as well as critically surf the Internet. Keep in mind that advances in treatment continue to offer hope.
A thorough and accurate diagnosis is essential to your understanding of what the best course of treatment may be given your age, PSA, Gleason Score, tumor type and stage (metastasis), etc. It is also essential that you discuss your options with your urologist, oncologist, radiologist and surgeon, each of whom may have different recommendations or options depending upon your choice of how you want to live and survive.
I have advanced prostate cancer [initially a PSA of 19.8, Gleason of 9, and (at least) local lymph node metastasis]. My cancer is presently undetectable (i.e., not hormone therapy refractive), and I just celebrated my 5th anniversary post-surgery. My choices, based on the severity of my cancer, included all recommended treatments available to me at the time, namely radical prostatectomy, external beam radiation and hormone ablation therapy. Recent studies have validated those three aggressive treatment regimens for advanced prostate cancer survival.
The side effects of those treatments were very troublesome for the first two years post-surgery. With additional medication for the menopausal-like symptoms (nausea, hot flashes, etc.) and bone calcium depletion effects (osteoporosis), I've been able to adjust to some of them. So, as you may see, the answers may be very different for each of us. Best wishes.
a truly biased view.......2005-06-18
Dr. Dattoli touts brachytherapy above all else, even though studies have shown that surgery offers surer long-term results, important especially for younger men who don't want their cancer to recur down the road. Seed implants can leave areas of the gland undertreated. Also, the idea that radiation causes fewer side effects is bogus. In fact, in addition to urinary and erectile problems, men getting radiation in any form run the risk of bowel problems.
Comments on Surviving Prostate Cancer without surgery.......2005-06-01
The book suffers from a rhetorical bias against surgery -- a bias that leads to little good being said about surgery. A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that if you see a surgeon about treatment options he/she will likely represent surgery; if you initially see a radiologist, the recommendation is likely to be radiation.
As other reviewers have pointed out, a man facing treatment options must determine if surgery that is right for him. IMRT/seeds is a great approach but many patients aren't eligible due to the progression of the cancer. Similarly, expansion of the cancer beyond the prostate gland may mean that surgery is not feasible. But surgery is, in my experience, one of the best options for a T2a or T2b diagnosis. Obviously much depends on the skill of the surgeon but if the surgeon manages to excise all the cancerous tissue, you will be in great shape re recurrence of cancer. The same cannot be said about hormone therapy.
I would make two points about surgery versus other options (all the while emphasizing that the best option depends on the state of your cancer). First, I found that men facing the treatment decision often recoil in horror at the idea of being cut open, nerve bundles being severed and a Foley catheter in their penis for two or three weeks. A tough call. But remind yourself that once the surgery is over and the catheter is out, you are done. Hopefully the surgeon will save enough nerve bundles that you will be able to function sexually, with a little help from the blue pill. I had the surgery and have not taken one bit of medication or treatment since. Luckily for me, the surgeon got it all and my PSA remains zero. You will also have the psychological relief of knowing that the cancerous object is gone from your body. (I was influenced by a certain famous football coach who said, 'as soon as I got the diagnosis I wanted this thing out of me')
Second, surgical techniques are getting better. Robots, cryogenic techniques and other technology are starting to move into the mainstream. Many surgeons have done hundreds of these operations. Success stories are increasing. The same cannot be said of radiation -- it still is likely to devastate surrounding tissue. Hormone therapy can be useful but the patient really needs to talk at length with his doctor about how long the course of treatment will take and the side effects, which can be terrible.
A final bonus re surgery. If it does not succeed, ADT therapy remains an option.
To all prostate patients: evaluate every option carefully and develop a good sense of the prospects for success of each option. Hang in there.
A potentially lifesaving book brimming with information .......2005-05-07
Radiation oncologist Michael J. Dattoli, M.D., Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Jennifer Cash, and prostate cancer survivor and executive director of the Dattoli Cancer Center and Brachytherapy Institute Donald Kaltenbach present Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery, a potentially lifesaving book brimming with information on the treatment options for those diagnosed with prostate cancer. In addition to possible choices of radiation, radical surgery, or some form of hormonal therapy, Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery offers the latest medical data on state-of-the-art radiation therapy such as seed implants and IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy). From its title, Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery may appear to strongly advocate non-surgical approaches, but in fact the title is simply a reaction against the long-standing favoritism of surgery to the extent of perpetuating myths concerning how effective it truly is. Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery gives an evenhanded assessment of various options, including statistical data with an eye toward possible contradictions or innacuracies hidden within the numbers. The goal is to provide the reader with as much information as possible, in clear, easy-to-understand terms, concerning prostate cancer, how it can be treated, why some men are more or less likely candidates for surgery than others, the risks involved in different types of treatment including risks of temporary or permanent incontience or impotence and how to get help - not only medical help, but also emotional and financial help. A "must-read" for anyone researching or personally grappling with difficult questions and problems concerning prostate cancer, the better to confront one's doctor and discuss options with as much knowledge about the situation as possible. Highly recommended.
Excellent For Men and For Women.......2005-04-21
This book gave both me and my wife hope and direction. It helped us to understand my prostate cancer diagnosis (PSA 6.4, Gleason 7) and it clarified my doctor's advice about the best treatments. For us, it's on a par with Dr. Susan Love's breast cancer book. Both are really excellent because they give you the kind of information you need to ask your doctors the right questions. They're the gold standard of cancer books. This is our second time having to face the 'Big C' together and we're going to beat it again!!

Bread Machine Magic Helpful Hints.......2001-04-09
Of all the bread machine cookbooks I own, this is the one I use the most. It's not just a cookbook, but full of hints and techniques that are useful for any machine. It tells of substitutes you can use. Such as applesauce for fats, etc. And the recipes are foolproof, as are any of the recipes in the "Magic" series. A must have for a beginning or advanced bread machine baker.
The tops for bread machine bread.......2000-10-06
I am not a bread maker, but my son loves bread so I decided it would be worth it to get a bread machine. I was pretty lukewarm about the loaves it was turning out until I got this book. This book is amazing, just knowing about the "peek and poke" method helped my bread 100%. The recipes are fantastic and I can guarantee my loaves will turn out 98% of the time. I also own the "More Bread Machine Magic" which is fantastic, but if you just get one book get this one. For someone that didn't know beans about bread I can now turn out beautiful and tasty loaves. If you are an experienced bread maker you may already know a lot of the info in this book, but for the novice or previously disappointed bread machine owner this book is tops.
Don't waste money on other books.......2000-02-27
This little book is small but believe me it is one of the *best* books on baking bread in a bread machine you will ever buy, especially considering the price. The authors have covered everything here, and then some. A must have for the adventurous, and for the beginner too!
A Bread Machine Must Have.......1999-12-13
In the 3 years I've owned my bread machine, I seldom used it. That was because everything I'd made was disappointing. Since buying this book the machine now gets used every other day. The recipes are wonderful & turn out perfect every time. The book tells you how to convert your favorites (which is great if you're an old do-it-all-by-hand bread baker like me). And the substitutions section is really helpful if you'd like to modify the recipes or use your favorite ingredients. Everyone I know has an unused bread machine sitting around & since I've told them, enthusiastically, of the success I've had using the book, they're using their machines again (and asking me what the book says!). Guess I'll be ordering more copies as gifts!
IF YOU OWN A BREAD MACHINE, YOU CAN NOT DO WITHOUT THIS BOOK.......1999-07-13
WHEN I PURCHASED MY BREAD MACHINE I READ THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLET, AND I HAD DOZENS OF QUESTIONS IT JUST DIDN'T ADDRESS. THE HELPFUL HINTS BOOK ANSWERED EVERY QUESTION I HAD. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A NEW MACHINE. CHAPTER ONE-THE VARIOUS BREAD MACHINE FEATURES-ALSO INCLUDED THE 800 NUMBER OF THE COMPANY WHO MADE THE MACHINE I WAS INTERESTED IN. I TELEPHONED THEM AND ASKED ALL THE QUESTIONS I WOULDN'T HAVE KNOWN TO ASK WITHOUT THE HELPFUL HINTS BOOK. I PURCHASED THE NEW MACHINE WITH CONFIDENCE; KNOWING THAT IT HAD ALL THE FEATURES I WANTED. IF YOU HAVE A BREAD MACHINE YOU CAN NOT AFFORD TO BE WITHOUT THIS BOOK.

A Workshop in a Book.......2006-03-03
Ever wonder what it would be like to have your very own personal workshop in your home? One that you can walk away from and return to at a better time? Are you at least an intermediate quilter who is looking for more of a challenge than the old "tried and true"? Well, look no further. Gail Garber has delivered all that and more in Stellar Journeys. The instructions are precise and easy to follow, one step at a time, using all of the diagrams which are well done, and there are a lot of them. While this book is not for beginners, it is a wonderful text workshop with bright photos of quilts that will inspire the best of us. A great way to use up those scraps from the stash, too. The reader is encouraged to use a wide variety of fabrics without getting too concerned as to "will this fabric go with the others?" dilemna that sometimes plague us. Ms. Garber covers everything from soup to nuts in this book about making stellar stars, including valued information about thread and many other issues that revolve around making a quilt successfully.
stellar journeys.......2006-01-30
this is a wonderful book which will help you drafting stars. I found this book very helpful.
Beautiful quilt design book.......2005-08-27
This lovely book shows you how to draft your own patterns for quilts using curved flying geese designs, and large circular stars.
It's an enjoyable book to browse through with plenty of inspirational photographical material - many of the quilts in the photographs really are artworks rather than simple bed quilts and I particularly loved the one of the tiger in the jungle.
Full instructions are provided on how to draft the circular stars and create your own designs with the techniques in the book. The author also discusses the technique of paper piecing as this is the logical method for the complex construction of the patterns in this volume. Three patterns are provided at the end of the book for you to practise learning the techniques discussed and all in all I thoroughly enjoyed browsing through this well laid out and carefully produced volume.

Book Description
A single mother's friendly, no-nonsense guide to balancing dating and parenting.
Embarking on the dating scene can be a fun though sometimes daunting prospect for any single woman. But for the more than 10 million single women in the U.S. with children at home, dating is a much more complicated matter. Whether uncoupled through divorce or death, single moms face a wide range of questions:
When will I be ready to date and how do I start? When-and what-should I tell the kids? What happens if I love the guy and the kids hate him?
In Mom, There's a Man in the Kitchen and He's Wearing Your Robe, Ellie Slott Fisher, a once-widowed, once-divorced single mother of two, speaks with refreshing candor about balancing dating and parenting. Drawing upon her own experience, the stories of many other women, and the advice of family psychologists, Fisher offers encouragement, strategies, and a healthy dose of humor for the single-but-looking mom-from how to meet men in the first place to when to introduce your date to the kids, from when and where to work sex into the equation to how to talk to your dating teenagers without looking like a hypocrite. Practical, funny, and hopeful, this is the one guide single moms need before jumping into the murky waters of the dating pool.

Terrific "Real Life" Advice for Single Moms.......2006-05-11
Single moms are single, not dead. With humor, wisdom, and the insight only those who have "been there" can offer, this book helps single moms "get a life" without sacrificing the emotional needs of their chidren.
Single moms will also want to check out the completely revised third edition of The Complete Single Mother.
Words of wisdom in a cute cover!.......2006-03-20
This book, though a fun quick read, contains gems of wisdom on topics ranging from what to expect from your kids, depending on their ages, and when and whether to introduce your new flame to them, to how to handle your boyfriend sleeping over. Whether you're just recently single again, or have been out of the dating scene for years, this book offers sound advice peppered with humor. It was very helpful and reassuring to me to be reminded that there are millions of single moms out there, and we all go through similar challenges in trying to find someone worth spending time with and exposing your children to! I've already lent this book to a friend!
Excellent, engaging, FUNNY book for single moms - and dads.......2006-01-21
There are few books out there to guide us single dads in the dating scene - while we do what's best for our children too. And men generally do not like to discuss these things with each over beers or poker. Here we have a delightful book we can read in the privacy of our own homes, and even share with male friends who are going through the same experience (and we don't even have to discuss, just hand the book over!). A book that's insightful, honest and well researched - and funny too!
well done, but mostly for mom's and a bit lightweight.......2005-12-20
I read this book from the perspective of a single father who is dating because some
of the reviews suggested men would find it useful. And it was useful. It did gracefully discuss issues such as what to tell the kids, things to avoid, etc.
But it was clearly written for mothers; and, indeed, single mothers who have their
kids almost all the time. I also noted a lack of studies supporting the advice and,
indeed, most child-development advice seems to come from one expert (!?).
Very helpful.......2005-08-23
I found this book to be very helpful. I like that it was written by someone who has been there (twice), rather than a doctor/professional who has theories but no personal experience. I bought this book because I couldn't find any detailed information online regarding single-mom dating past the point of meeting someone and the initial introduction to the kids. This book goes into topics like public displays of affection, sleep-overs, moving in together, getting remarried, etc. I also like that it discusses all different age groups. Now that I've read it, my boyfriend is reading it too. It is written from the woman's perspective, but a man would certainly benefit from the information. As long as he can ignore or get past some occasional ex-husband bashing within the stories.

Book Description
This volume presents a selection of paintings, poetry, essays, and ephemeral writings by the Chinese American modernist Yun Gee (1906-1963), together with essays about the artist.
Yun Gee arrived in San Francisco from Guangdong Province at the age of fifteen and within a few years established himself as one of the city's most daring avant-garde painters. But all of his astonishing efforts with the brush and palette ran up against an intense anti-Chinese sentiment. He seemed never to escape the high social price of being Chinesenot in San Francisco, Paris, or New York, where he ended his days. This collection of writings and images represents the eclectic interests and disappointed hopes of a man who was by turns a political revolutionary, cultural radical, social visionary, teacher, inventor, painter, and poet.
As a unique collection of materials documenting the expressions of an Asian American artist of the first half of the 20th century, this book illuminates not only the life and work of the multifaceted Yun Gee, but also the experiences of Chinese immigrants who came of age in America during the Exclusion Era. Anthony Lee's essays and the materials he has gathered here reveal the utopianism, anger, and anxiety that were the traces of an entire generation's racialized existence.
