Informative and entertaining.......2003-02-05
I live in Tucson and get a lot of out-of-town friends and relatives passing through. I put this book in their hands and turn them loose. It covers just about everything a tourist would want and need to know, and then some, and the writing is pretty funny, but not stupid. The book is organized very usefully, with restaurants and attractions and motels listed by what section of the city they're in. Even I didn't know some of the things in this book, and I've lived here nearly 30 years. I just wish they'd come out with an update, because some of the restaurants have closed since this was published.
A good overview.......2001-10-01
I bought this because I was going to Tucson on vacation, with an eye to perhaps retiring there eventually. I found the book useful, although a bit superficial. Still, it's worth the price.

As a longtime private pilot, Frank Reick believes that he has utilized the learned experiences of aviation to connect many other abilities, such as the skills necessary to perform successful investing.

Outstanding.......2007-01-10
Relatively unknown but a solid approach to the stock market. This book modified my approach to evaluating stocks so I can't reccomend it too highly.
I gave it 4 stars because I'm not a pilot; after a while I found all the flight anecdotes wearing but that's just me.
Learning to invest means taking bits and pieces from here and there and pasting together what you find valuable. No one will give you all the rules perhaps becaus there are no rules. Awful thought but possible. I also suggest "Fooled By Randomness".

Customer Reviews:
After 13 years continues to be a good read..........2005-05-30
For fun, pleasure, and practical know how this is by far the best herb book I have in my library. I first discovered this book at our local library when I was young married and living on a very tight budget. Thirteen years and several books and magazines later, I continue to turn to Shaudys book. Through the years I have not always had an herb garden either and you don't need one to enjoy or use this book! There are YUMMY recipes that call for either dried or fresh herbs and crafts galore. The info on growing herbs is very helpful too. I love the month to month format; there are no glossy hyped pictures, just lovely quotations introducing us to the month followed by a bounty of non-intimidating information on growing using and enjoying herbs.
Wonderful herbal.......2002-01-13
I've read and re-read Phyllis's books, this one is a keeper! I've been growing herbs for years and I refer to this book alot. There's wonderful recipes, hints, crafts, and information that the common herb gardener can use. Nothing fancy, just every day, every month common sense. I highly reccomend this book, and her other one as well, Herbal Treasures. Phyllis is currently working on a third book, but as far as I know it's not out yet.
THE BEST herb book - for beginners or old-timers alike!.......1998-08-12
This book is apt to be overlooked in favor of glossy pictures, and what a shame!! It has so much useful information to offer, and the unique format of organizing info monthly is helpful. I own a shop and reccomend this as my favorite book, and everyone comes back to tell me how great it is. When my copy arrived in the mail years ago, I never went to sleep that night (my husband will attest!!) and now I have an eleven year old herb shop that is going strong. And this is due in no small measure to this wonderful lady and her great book. A must have for anyone interested in the wonderful world of herbs!!
This is the best book for beginners-bar none!!!.......1997-06-26
This is definitely the best herbal book for the beginner or the experienced, to plant, grow harvest, cook, craft, it's all here. I have a hard time to put it down, in order to get anything don

Great text. Easy to read.......2004-10-30
I've referred to this book on many occasions over the years. Now working on my second degree, several classmates and a professor have used it as the basis for discussions on family stress. It covers a variety of topics and the resulting ramifications. The topics apply in all life situations and allow you to see families in a whole new light. An easy, yet very informative read. Working toward my first degree, it was the only text I read cover to cover.

new look at Santa.......2003-01-27
While van Renterghem does give his readers a heavy dose of neo-Paganism, and makes some overgeneralizations(for example: he suggests Coca Cola invented the red suit, but evidence exists that Santa in red was probably a part of the Christmas culture before the ad campaigns began; he suggests that Celtic and Nordic cultures are so similar that it is difficult to separate them, but in reality the two cultures are unique and independent of one another),his hypothesis is not without merit. Early church leaders did Christianize earlier pagan symbols and celebrations, and I thought the association of Santa with Odin (who did serve as a shaman in Nordic myths) eye-opening. In short, I found this book to be entertaining and a very easy read. Whether you like it or not, it will make you think, and for that I give it four stars.
Hmmmm..........2002-08-01
A rather egregious example of political correctness and anti-Christian polemic. Still, if one is willing to wade through the cultural marxism it becomes a rather charming study of European preChristian folk traditions. Anyone interested in the history of Christmas traditions will find this a good read.
Great Book.......2000-09-19
I loved this book! I would recomend it to anybody. It makes you think about things in different light then I have previouly looked at them before and I conider myelf a very open minded person. The reading is fairly easy. The information eems to much to be shoved in a 208 page book. Authors opinions sometimes clouds the facts and meddles them up a bit. But all in all a wonderful book! Great gift giving for anyone willing to open the mind some. Merry Xmas to all!
Thought provoking, and thoroughly enjoyable.......1999-04-26
Mr. van Renterghem's - spelled correctly, with a small "v" - presentation of Santa's ancestors, arguments of religious beliefs aside, are certainly thought provoking. Even though not specifically cited argument by argument, the research appears to be extensive and thorough --judging by the number and variety of sources (12 pages of references!)used, and leads one to further study.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I even bought extra copies for gift-giving, most particularly to my friends and acquaintances of the religious persuasion -- who lament the "descent" of the secular American Santa Claus of today, from the Saint Nicholas of yesteryears.
Provides a good basis for further study.......1999-01-21
I enjoyed reading this book. I was fascinated by the links our Xmas rituals have to so many varied cultures and religious sects. Arguments to the validity of the "anthropology" notwithstanding, this is a good read with solid information on the twisting path that celebratory rituals take.

Mumming Revived.......2004-06-08
Mumming isn't solely the New Year's tradition that is performed in Philadelphia's streets. In Ireland, it involved masking, music making, storytelling, and folk drama as mummers visited neighbors in holiday celebrations. Henry Glassie's book is a study of the folklore and oral history of mumming within a small community in the border area of Ireland and Ulster. Although the mumming tradition had died out by the mid 20th century, current residents who remembered the mumming tradition describe what one might experience when celebrating a typical evening of the old tradition. The book is a highly readable and insightful study of Irish folklife, and a fine presentation of mumming's memory culture.

Customer Reviews:
I wish there were more Christmas stories like this........2007-10-13
My stepfather David is a writer and he knows Kevin Major. David was able to obtain a copy from Kevin for a Christmas gift for me. It has Kevin's autograph in gold ink. I like to read it every December. I read one chapter per day from the first to the twenty-fourth, which is what Kevin wrote the book for. I feel for Jesse and his mother, living alone, no close family around, and no stability. I like how Jonathan was teasing Jesse at first, but the two became friends. The scene when the two boys come in after playing in the snow and Jonathan's mom serves them macaroni and cheese - home cooked, not Kraft - is so warm. Macaroni and cheese is one of my favourite dishes.
Mrs. Wentzell was an old plum pit. Nothing could please her. She didn't appreciate it when the boys gave her a Christmas stocking filled with goodies. I would have felt extremely touched at something like that, because I love children. But at least her ways were mended on Christmas night at the church service, and Jesse and his mother had some friends to spend Christmas Day with. It has a touching ending.
A gripping tale for children.......2003-12-17
This book is an absolute treasure. No matter how busy life gets in this crazy time of year, my daughter and I sit down every evening and read one chapter of this wonderful Advent-style book. When we finish, she begs for more and I say, tomorrow evening will come soon enough! Thank-you Kevin Major for creating some of the best Christmas memories ever for this working Mom and her daughter.
Wonderful Pre-school and Kindergartem Kids Story.......2002-07-22
This book is a wonderful story for reading to young children , particularly during the Advent season at Xmas . One chapter a day durng that season made our Grandchildren eager to hear the next 'episode' the next day. Best time is just before bedtime.
I have discovered also it can be repeated the following year as the children become more interactive with the story line. The story with its Canadian background on the East Coast and the illustrations of the actual wooden Santa Clauses appeals to all ages.

For the scholar, not the layman.......2007-06-10
Although subtitled "The British Government Plot to Assassinate Queen Victoria", this book is really about the fight for Irish home rule from 1858 to 1891. If that's a subject that's of interest to you and you like your history full of facts, dates, names and places, this book may be for you, but I found the going tough and eventually was skimming more than reading. It's a scholarly piece of work, but I prefer my history a lot less dry and more digested.
Fenian's Fire meets Tom Clancy.......2003-08-26
I had no idea that Queen Victoria had been the subject of a serious assassination plot. Sure she had had potshots taken at her but this was SERIOUS. The Fenians (Irish) were out to get her - or were they? In a style reminiscent of Tom Clancy, Christy Campbell reveals the characters and plot. A criticism of the book is that the story is not linear and jumps around. The historical characters are also brought in at different times to suit the author and do not come into the story in a logical fashion. Or not to me anyway.
The Dirty War.......2003-08-04
The world's only global superpower is faced with terrorists in its greatest city, trying to destroy its major landmarks. These foreigners were born in one nation, a backward, oppressed land with an alien religion which, however, is of great geographic and strategic importance to the superpower. They are financed from another country, an immensely wealthy, so-called ally and friend of the superpower. To defeat these desperate men and their heinous ends, the superpower must engage them on their own terms, and fight a dirty war, which will prove corrosive to freedom and democracy at home, and only increase the hatred of the foreign land.
The United States in 2001? Er, no, it's Great Britain in the 1880s, faced with Irish-American dynamiters who attacked Scotland Yard, the House of Commons, and, in spectacularly unsuccessful fashion, London Bridge. The British response to this threat is like John LeCarre rewritten by Flann O'Brien. The chief counter-terrorist securocrat in Gladstone's Liberal government, Jenkinson, is a convinced Home Ruler. With the aide of his double agents and informers within the Irish-American organizations, he sets a phony bomb plot to assassinate Queen Victoria in motion. By demonstrating the danger of Irish extremism, he hopes to convince British opinion of the need to conciliate moderate Irish nationalists with Home Rule. However, Gladstone's government falls, and Lord Salisbury's Tories take over. Vehemently opposed to Home Rule, Salisbury sees an opportunity to use the phony bomb plot to discredit Parnell's party, by linking Irish terrorists with Irish parlimentarians. Meanwhile, another Irish-American faction in Chicago decides to set up its own Jubilee plot, this time for real...
Fenian Fire is an engaging and original history which (quite deliberately) reads like a thriller. I found it fascinating stuff, but like the spymasters and their convoluted and perplexing plot(s), the narrative occasionally threatens to run out of control.
