This must be one of the best travel guides I've ever read. The author apparently wrote this book based on extensive personal experience since there is a ton of information contained in the book that one would not know unless one has actually travelled to those places.

Doerper's Coastal California.......2003-02-13
A very helpful guide for driving up or down my favorite coast in the world! Doerper takes you almost mile by mile - was particularly helpful as I drove from Sebastopol up to Menocino, heretofore undiscovered country for me. Galen Rowell's photographs have always been a treat. His death was a real loss, but at least you can tour the CA coast through his eyes in this book.
I liked this book enough to buy Doerper's corollary for the Pacific Northwest to use this year:)!

I bought this book before traveling from San Francisco down Big Sur (about halfway), and it has great coverage of the Big Sur coast, the Santa Cruz area, and San Francisco.
More than a guide- Beatifully illustrated and written.......1998-07-18

One good chapter, but slightly repetitive & not much new.......2003-10-10
Jacobs and Levy have assembled a body of work here centering on their stock picking techniques as well as their long-short portfolio construction techniques. Most of the chapters have their origins in various finance journals, though the articles themselves are not very heavy on mathematics. Overall, the book was interesting, though somewhat repititious. In retrospect I'd suggest that those familiar with long-short portfolios and the various market anomolies should just read chapter 2 about "Disentangling Equity Return Regularities" since that is where Jacobs & Levy's original work is outlined.
Chapter 2 focuses on the use of regression analysis to "disentangle" various stock market anomalies. The authors claim that simple rules such as "Buy low-P/E stocks" are appealing, but oversimplify the true source of stock returns. For example, low P/E stocks tend to have higher rates of return, as do small-capitalization stocks. But if a small capitalization stocks also tend to have low P/E's, then how much of their return is due to the low-P/E effect by itself, and how much is due to the small-capitalization effect by itself? Jacobs & Levy have done the analyses, and show which effects are genuine, and which effects are merely proxies for other effects. The effects that turn out to be the strongest when "disentangled" include low P/E, Earnings trend, Earnings Surprise, Residual Reversal, and Relative Strength.
The introductory chapters in the book make some interesting points. They argue that the stock market is not random, but then again it is also not simple. Although simple rules are appealing to humans, they oversimplify the complexity of the market. To gain an edge, one must use sophisticated, objective, multi-factor statistical computer models that capture the complex interactions in the market. Of course the authors are saying this to advocate the techniques they use, but nevertheless, they have some good points.
Finally, the second half of the book focuses on the construction of long-short portfolios, though there is not much fresh material here. They point out some of the logistical details of running a long-short portfolio, and give some examples. Also, they introduce the concept of "alpha-transport." That is, one can construct a long-short market neutral portfolio, then by buying buy an index (using SP500 futures, for example) one "transports" the gains from the long-short portfolio onto the gains/losses of the index position. Thus, if the stock picking for the long-short portfolio is done correctly, the total portfolio will beat the index picked. To me, this seemed like an obvious technique; I'm surprised they decided to focus on it and give it a fancy name ("alpha transport")
Overall, I found the book interesting, though somewhat repetitious. I was familiar with much of what was covered, however I did find that Chapter 2 was worth reading, since I wasn't familiar with Jacobs & Levy's work in detail.
Ultimately disappointing.......2001-04-23
As a critic once said of Henry James, Jacobs and Levy have chewed more than they bit off. There is (as another reviewer points out) no follow-up on how their factors have behaved in the decade or more since they did some of the pioneering work on factor models. Overall, the book has about 10% as much information useful to a practitioner as appears in Grinold & Kahn's authoritative text.
A collection of articles aimed at practitioners.......2000-06-23
This book is great for people who want an overview of the opportunities available in numerical evaluation of stocks. However to say that this is a book on quantitative techniques is probably not the mest description. There is extensive use of regression analysis but more hard-core 'quant' people will probabliy be disappointed. It is clear that the book is written by investment professionals focusing a lot on traditional evaluations parameters such as P/E, P/B etc. Interesting points include purification of return signals, and an extensive discussion of long-short techniques.
A Potent, Authoritative Guide to Successful Stock Selection.......2000-05-22
The most important thing that I (an individual mutual fund investor) came away with was an understanding of the reasons why actively managed mutual funds cannot consistently beat their underlying benchmarks if they take a "stock picking" approach. Since this is the approach taken by most mutual fund managers, it is not surprising that more than 50% (often much more than 50%) do not beat their benchmarks. I also found it interesting how with sufficient breath and depth, engineered portfolios offer higher return and lower risk than the S&P 500.
It is easy to see how "alpha transport", when properly used, can also help maximize returns while minimizing risk. However, I imagine there have been, more often than not, improper use of alpha transport which did just the opposite (minimize return and maximize risk). Obviously not included in the text is the "proper usage" or algorithms for "disentangling equity return regularities". I imagine the authors keep such information close to their chest and constantly update them as old algorithms become part of the efficient market.
The work provides a guide to modern methods of equity management, and for those interested in the state-of-the-art, I highly recommend this book.
Still Just a Collection of Journal Articles.......2000-04-26
The Good: It is a collection of some of the great papers by the authors over the years that have appeared in Journal of Portfolio Mgt., Journal of Investing and the Financial Analysts Journal. If you do any work in quant equity management you should know and have these papers. Buy the book and save time hunting down the papers.
The Bad: It is a collection of some of the great papers by the authors over the years that have appeared in Journal of Portfolio Mgt., Journal of Investing and the Financial Analysts Journal. If you do any work in quant equity management you know and have these papers. The introductions and "new" material that ties it all together is not worth the expense. What sort of got under my skin is that none of the work has been updated or brought current, even by using appendicies. Since some of their most interesting quant work was published 12 years ago we have no updates as to how the factors are doing. This would have been a great value to this reader.
Overall its a great body of work but nothing new.

A great book for the busy gardener........2002-10-21
This is a truly wonderful book that will help you rethink your approach to gardening. The emphasis is on careful planning of your garden design and smart selection of plants, all to save you time and work in the future. The most useful part of the book is undoubtedly the "Picking Unpicky Plants" section, which includes lists of vegetables, herbs, annuals, perennials and biennials, bulbs, trees, shrubs, and ornamental grasses. The last portion of the book is "Easy Projects for the Weekend Gardener," an excellent source for quick ideas for your garden, such as "A Quick Walk," a garden path that can be created in a few hours and won't be overrun by weeds.
Despite its limited availability, this book is a must-have for anyone who enjoys having a garden but doesn't want to spend their every spare moment working on it.

This is one of the best garden project books I have seen. I borrowed it from the library and decided afterward that I just had to have it. An Escape from America's Toxic Lifestyle.......2006-09-18
America isn't a very safe place to live.
I'm not talking about crime rates, but about death rates, or more specifically health expectancy rates, which is the length of time a person can expect to live in good health, living independently and productively with a sound mind and body.
The United States ranks 24th, dead last among all developed countries.
Why? What is so toxic about the American lifestyle?
Well, the old saying goes, if you want to spot a counterfeit, go study a genuine dollar bill.
Likewise, if you want to spot what's wrong with America, why not go study the healthiest people on Earth?
Well, that's what two brothers, one a physician and one an anthropologist, have been doing for the past decade in the islands of Okinawa, studying over 400 centenarians--people over 100 years old. And not decrepit, demented shells over 100 either-- people still living in their homes, gardening, walking to market daily, chatting with friends.
Why are they living so long? Why are their bodies on almost every biochemical measure 20 years younger or more than equivalent American bodies?
That's the subject of the book The Okinawa Program, and a fascinating read it is. The authors both try to describe the health and lifestyle of the Okinawan culture, try to explain what is healthy about it, and then how to incorporate it into our lifestyle.
The distinctives that the authors bring out chapter by chapter are a healthy primarily vegetarian diet, regular exercise, a low-pressure lifestyle, use of meditation and other forms of stress-reduction, a close supportive social network, and their "spirituality" which is mostly positive and optimistic in nature.
The book itself is well-written and documented as far as this genre goes. It's only downfall (also common to the genre) is tunnel-vision. The authors' enthusiasm for all things Okinawan rarely points out anything negative at all about the culture, to the point that you wonder how objective they really are. Beyond that, they often downplay the very tenuous nature of drawing conclusions about looking backwards and trying to figure out why things are a certain way-- you can use common sense and a little science to make a good guess that eating foods high in flavinoids may extend life, but limited science plus common sense has led us down the wrong path many a time before.
Another major point to be made is that these non-Christian authors cannot perceive the difference between mere religion (which they apparently believe is generically good for both its placebo like effect on the human body and possibly tapping into some generic higher power) vs. a genuine relationship with the genuine God.
Of course, this draws a rather brutal line in the sand for those of us who do name the name of Christ. If our lives have truly been touched by the living God, then why are we dying by the droves in our gluttony and physical laziness and frantically paced American lifestyles, while people who do not know the true God over the ocean are living lives which I suspect more closely model what Christ would have us live? Food for thought, and a worthwhile book to read and ponder.

This has got to be one of the most well-researched books on health and longevity that I've read in a long time. Based on a landmark study on the people of Okinawa (Japan), the authors outline the preventative lifestyle techniques that keep the elders of Okinawa healthy well into old age and with lower rates of disease and disability than here in the West.
Also highly recommended is the book The Okinawa Diet Plan, as this is more specifically geared towards those trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy body weight. Definitely two books that belong in the home library of anyone seriously interested in health and longevity.

Excruciating Read........2006-05-30
This is one of those books that I wanted as a quick, uplifting, summer read and I have to be honest and say it was really excruciating to read. I don't like to give negative feedback, especially for authors whom I've enjoyed in the past. However, the positive reviews here, which influenced me to purchase it, need to be checked. I FORCED myself to finish this and it took months.
The book is about the author's childhood. It is so completely disjointed in it's characters, times and locations and rarely makes sense at all. There is absolutely no depth to or connections between any of the characters. It's all descriptive writing about locations, etc. and has little point or continuity. It really has nothing to do with being a builder, even thought that's what it seems the protagonist wanted to be in his early childhood. Later in the book, you find out he actually wanted to be something else (I can't even remember and i finished it this week) and mentions nothing about him wanting to be an author (which he ultimately is).
It would have helped if the author cut the descriptive text in half and delved into the relationships between the people in his life (not just describe their out of sequence comments). I was craving to know more about his father and him and his mother and him and his brother, neighbors, aunts, etc. but it just described a few of their comments and actions randomly in his life. The most character development is of a neighbor - "Mrs. Fox" who appears in one of his location changes - and that is purely descriptive as well.
I do not recommend this book to anyone - not even people who fondly remember the development communities of the 50's - today. Sorry Mr. Lisiki but i'm sure i'll give you a good review somewhere else.

Every now and then I come across a book that occupies all my free time. This is one such book! The author has accomplished to portrait his journey from middle America childhood to adulthood with great observation, introspection, and delirious humor. I loved it!

The most subversive thing that Famous Builder does is to retell family history from a queer perspective. Thus, the young narratorýs painstaking journey toward an adult queer life is implicitly compared and connected to the fatherýs movement up the social ladder. From Paul Lisickyýs point of view, both are quintessentially American acts. How refreshing to read a book in which gay identity is not THE subject of the story but one of its narratives. Every reader will find an aspect of her story mirrored here, regardless of her background. Iýve come back to it again and again, always with something new to ponder.
