Inspiration for a Complete Makeover.......2007-07-21
While South Central Texas (San Antonio) isn't a coastal area (and isn't exactly a "moderate" climate, either), Latymer's book has proven to be a good resource for our area. The pictures helped me to visualize what could be, and the plant lists have been invaluable for choosing plants. While I've always loved "digging in the dirt," no one ever would have accused me of being an accomplished gardener. But that didn't stop me. Thanks to the inspiration I found in Latymer's book, I've been working steadily at replacing my grassy front yard with a Mediterranean-style water-wise garden. And now, many of my neighbors are interested in doing the same. They think my yard is gorgeous. And so do I.
Good Reference Work.......2006-08-10
This book is a good reference for moderate coastal areas (we are on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in So. Cal.) The reference area (2/3 of the book) is well organized with lots of photos. Latymer has divided Mediterranean plants into sections on trees, palms, sbrubs, etc. The reader can look at a choice of plants for a particular application, which are grouped together.
Valuable plant information.......2005-08-10
The most valuable thing about this book for me was the extensive plant list which contained good information about size, growing speed, minimum temperatures, water need and descriptions of the plant itself sometimes including information about propagation. The list is devided in different chapters for trees, shrubs, climbers, palms, cacti and succulents, perrenials and annuals which made it very easy to use while planning a garden.
The information chapters are mainly oriented on style and design though even some chapters about soil and water are included which contain valuable knowledge.
Our Best Gardening Book.......2004-09-17
Can't beat this for our climate (So. Calif. by the beach) for trustworthy info. Hugo is dead-on! We own zillions of gardening books and this is by far my personal favorite.
The Mediterranean Gardener.......2000-06-09
This book is an absolute delight, as much for the prose as for the glorious photographs. As well as recommendations for planting in various Mediterranean conditions, the author gives splendid professional advice on local problems such as water shortage, salt air damage and so on.
If you have had failures in your ex-pat. garden through trying to acclimatise plants which only thrive in more northerly regions, this book will help you never again to make those mistakes.
No-one should be without it; I have two of them. Yvonne Gregson.

Book Description
“a significant contribution to the continuing exploration of the issues surrounding the learning potential of young children’s play. Holland’s writing is engaging, her subject is of considerable interest, and her approach succeeds in challenging many of the taken-for-granted assumptions in several areas of the debate. Early childhood educators, those preparing to become early childhood educators, and those who accompany them on this journey will find much that is worthwhile and provocative in this book.” Discourse
"This book will be a valuable support to all practitioners who do not enjoy 'policing' children's play themes." Nursery World
War, weapon and superhero play has been banned in many early childhood settings for over 30 years. This book explores the development and application of a zero tolerance approach through the eyes of children and practitioners.
The author challenges the key rationale for linking aggressive play themes to violent behaviour. She examines play where children are allowed to construct weapons and enact goodies/baddies and superhero scenarios with sensitive adult guidance, and explores the generally positive experiences of children and practitioners. Rather than reading this form of play as the beginning of the slippery slope towards anti-social behaviour, readers are invited to view it as an entry point to imaginative play and social development.
We don't play with guns here is a fascinating and insightful contribution to this area of much debate in the early childhood community. The book is key reading for early childhood practitioners, teachers, students, parents and policy makers.
Book Description
Readers looking for an introduction to the Netherlands, will not only find this book interesting, informative, and practical, but amusing, many-sided and easy to read.
It stimulates visitors to take advantage of the unusual variety of possibilities this unique country offers. They will be led not only to what they should see, but off the well-trodden tourist route to what they will enjoy visiting. From its historic and exciting cities with their beautiful architecture and world class museums, to its cutting edge educational exhibits and recreation parks; through the canal-ribboned country-side to its folkloric villages, extensive unspoiled beaches, and more.
After explaining how the system works, each of the thirteen provinces is given its own full chapter. A particularly useful section lists special yearly events not to be missed, while another answers most questions new residents will have.
What makes this book unusual is the wealth and practical presentation of it contents; its maps, addresses, telephone numbers, hours of venues, and its amusing illustrations.
If you are looking for the real Holland experience, this book will be an invaluable guide.
Customer Reviews:
good for those planning to live in Holland.......2005-05-14
This is a detailed guidebook, almost too detailed for someone trying to get a country overview for initial trip planning. Providing good coverage of even smaller towns and issues such as pregnancy or education, it is most helpful for those living in or spending an extended time in the Netherlands. Try another book to get your bearings, then use this one for helpful and detailed information about places, museums, and interesting cultural facts.
A "Must Have" book for visitors to Holland.......2000-08-17
This is a "must have" book for visitors to Holland I only wish I had owned this book from day one, or even before I came to Holland. Its format is very clear and easy to follow and I can imagine I shall be dipping in and out of it for a long time to come. Part I, the main section, is dedicated to sightseeing, museums and amusement centres. Each of the twelve provinces is given a separate chapter. At the beginning of each there is a small useful map showing main towns, major roads and the borders of the provinces. These do help the geographically challenged (like me) to become more familiar with the layout of this relatively small country.
An introduction to the history and folklore of each province makes interesting reading. Every chapter, with its extensive coverage of museums, galleries, historic sites, cities, towns, villages and picturesque countryside, definitely gets the message across that there is more to Holland than Amsterdam.
Part II, entitled "Living in Holland" provides a wealth of information, advice and contact addresses. It covers the culture, gives an insight into "the system", education, sports and entertainment. It also includes a useful calendar of yearly special events. This section provides the newcomer not only with a vast array of specific information, but also presents it in a very practical manner, clearly written by someone with a close understanding of Dutch life. It is without a doubt an excellent aid to the newcomer, to help them settle quickly into this unique little country.
Customer Reviews:
She's been looking over my shoulder---.......2005-04-16
This was the first of Holland's books that I read, and it caused me to search out several more of hers. She has the ability that only the best writers have, to put into words emotions that we've all had, but better and clearer. To use a teeny-bopper expression, "Yeah! What SHE said!" Never superficial, her books can also move you to tears at times. Just a fine writer, when you agree with her, AND when you don't.
Boy, can she write!.......2000-02-12
Barbara Holland's book, "Mothers Day", also reissued under another name - which I forget (maybe an uncommon life) by A Common Reader press, is one of the best books I've read in the past couple of years. She tells the tale of her day-to-day life with achingly funny accuracy, and makes us appreciate the absurdity and preciousness of our own lives. Her style of writing is effortlessly and unpretentiously witty and sophisticated. I would recommend this book to everyone, but especially to mothers of young children and cats!

Ten Stocks that Could Change the World.......2001-02-07
An amazing book featuring companies that have fascinating products. Certainly a "field to watch" of tech savvy, smart companies.
An invaluable resource for the smart investor..........2001-02-07
This book has already provided me with excellent guidance and I anticipate relying heavily on the wisdom Larry Waschka shares in this book as I further refine my long-term investment strategy. No informed investor should miss this book.
The "lightbulb" lit up several times -.......2001-02-03
I enjoyed reading the book. I now understand some of the complexities of the revolutions in technology ie. photonics, e-learning, and fiber optics. The chapter on photonics was particularly interesting to me. Thanks for taking the mystery out of those technologies that at one time I thought I would never get my brain around! Kudos!!!

Book Description
This is a key textbook for specialist readers of accounting and finance, either undergraduate or professional, taking a first course in auditing. In this third edition the authors continue to provide a refreshing, imaginative and thorough introduction to the audit process, with a rational and coherent foundation for the appreciation of auditing practice. The text is entirely brought up to date with changes post-Enron, with new auditing standards including IAS, and with changes in UK company law. With the aid of numerous examples, case studies and questions, The Audit Process: Principles, Practice and Cases provides a realistic and thought-provoking insight into the individual components of the auditing process in the context of the entire audit. A major strength of the book is its questioning approach, designed to encourage the student to interact with the material.
Customer Reviews:
The book lacks any system.......2000-10-19
Most importantly, the book lacks any system and after reading it you do not really get the big picture and systematic view of hte auditing process. Many chapters are long winded: it takes the authors long time to say something. The cases are not as many and do not give very good examples of the auditing process as I was expecting before buying the book.
The Best book for learning auditing.......2000-05-15
First, the book begins with a case of small business (Andrew and James, two friends, are going in a busines of selling of a bunkrupt stock; James stays out of active business due to a accidental broken leg till the end of the 6 month period where this the time for sharing the profit of this joint-venture.) which is the clearest one telling the very concept of the subject (auditing in this case). And also the presantion is very good, case studies, activities are very good and subject is clearly explained around those. The small notes at side of each page are also very informative and they accelarate the reading and understanding of the subject. The questions and answers at the second part of the book (actually 30 pages at the end of the book of total 650 or so pages of the book)is very helpful. And each chapter contains at the end a useful list of reading materials as referance and further reading. If you want to learn auditing process both in theory and practice this the book where you should look at first.

Great quick projects.......2007-01-03
Eleanor Burns is one of my favorite quilt authors. Not only is everything explained well but good illustrations are used to guide one if a problem does arise.
I have just finished doing a quick project from this book. It is called Cold Hands, Warm Heart. Now, if I should need a special gift for someone I have it. I am getting ready to work on another project from this book ASAP.

If you like country..................2006-10-05
then this is a book for you. The book runs 207 pages not including the many templates. It contains instructions for tree decorations, stockings, tablerunners, placemats, pillows, 7 wallhangings, 3 quilts, 4 projects for children and even a christmas jacket for Fido! Twenty-eight projects in all. However, because I don't do country, there is only one project I would consider doing. I ordered this book through the mail and had I seen it at a bookstore I wouldn't have gotten it. I gave it 3 stars because I'm sure that many of you country quilters would find it appealing.
Note: I've decided to give it 4 stars!
Excellent Book.......2006-08-15
I always enjoy using the patterns by Eleanor Burns. They are very explicit and easy to follow, especially for beginners. The directions and pictures really make it easy for quilters.

True bonsai.......2003-04-18
Full of examples of excellent bonsais, the results of techniques which are almost lost in the present profit-basis world of bonsai. This book is an accumulation of true masterpieces which an amateur can never attain.
Those who criticize this book for the lack of explanation are making the same mistake as saying "no explanation of how to paint!" looking at the book of Leonardo da Vinci; besides, bonsais in this book are grown for tens of, sometimes hundreds of years. So it would be impossible to explain what time does to the plants.
In front of this book, all I have to do is to sigh for my lack of skills. But I believe this is an agony by which all creators are haunted.

Wounderful, but..........2002-01-18
As you go trough the book you will discover some wonderful pictures, but that's it. Because the information that comes with the photos is very limited and in some cases inexistent, except for the name of the species, of course. Unless you are an "advanced" bonsaist, you better buy another book as this, only gives you lots of visual information, that beginners, as me, won't see at first glance. So, if you are a beginner, you better grab your hands on another book, but if you know enough, I would rate this book as four-five stars.
what kind of four seasons?.......2001-11-28
If you think you are going to see pictures of the same bonsai in four different seasons do not buy this book. Except for one plant there is no such a thing. And it is a pity. The book has four different chapters, one for each season. But they do not repeat the same plants. That is to say that they just select good plants to be photographed in each season as most books do. Therefore one cannot see the richness of a bonsai throughout the year. The book is beautiful but if you want good pictures there are many other better books i.e. Classic Bonsai of Japan, also by Kodansha.

Amazon.com Reviews
Sonia Choquette is an internationally acclaimed spiritual teacher who has taught individuals as well as corporate staff members to claim and understand their intuitive and creative potential. (Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way, considers Choquette her personal mentor and teacher.) Over the years, students have often asked Choquette how they can foster their children's innate intuition and creativity. This book is a welcome answer to this parental quest.
Choquette has divided this outstanding resource into three sections--each part representing the three stages of nurturing intuition. The first section teaches parents how they can awaken and commit to their own intuition, spirituality, and creativity. The second stage focuses specifically on "Embracing Intuition." Choquette discusses energy fields, children's auras (and the need for after-school aura cleansing), and fostering children's imaginations and inner guidance systems. Lastly, Choquette offers parents specific tools for gaining support from spiritual guides, teachers, healers, and helpers. Parents who long to discuss and learn more about raising spiritual beings will be greatly satisfied with this intelligent and altogether wise family resource. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
"Connecting to our intuition unites us with both our soul and the soul of the Universe, Divine Spirit. It takes away our fearful sense of isolation and inadequacy. It replaces fear with a sense of spiritual direction and safety. The world becomes friendly, nonadversarial, and welcoming. Life becomes joyful, amusing, generous, and abundant. This is the divine plan. The intuitive life is one of confidence, inner peace, and creative expression. What better gift to ourselves and our children?"
How can I help my children to thrive and prosper? How can I ensure that they will not become unhappy and frustrated as I have been? These are the questions that inspired Sonia Choquette to write this profound and accessible book explaining--through spiritual principles, modern-day parables, and practical exercises--how even busy parents can help children connect to their own source of divine guidance.
Customer Reviews:
Teaching Children to Turst Themselves.......2007-03-20
This is a book from a many generation psychic on how to cultivate a home where children are trusted and are taught to trust themselves. Choquette herself was raised in a nurturing home by a mother who honored the six sense. If you have a sensitive child then this can help you create a supportive environment so that a child learns to trust themself and stay out of trouble. Children who are allowed to grow in their inner wisdom are more likely as adults to choose wisely compared to counterparts who are cut off from their gut.
On the flipside: Do you due diiligence on the credentials, even at the Ph.D. level of other more woo-woo writers on this field of energy and intuitive healing .... before you listen to their counsel. Many of them have Ph.D.'s from unaccredited places ... which means they didn't go through the same kind of rigor. Sonia is one of many popular New Agey type writers along with Doreen Virtue, Carolyn Myss, John Gray, Barbara De Angelis, etc .... who are examples of Ph.D.s whose source were unaccredited universities. Please keep this in mind when venturing out to learn from an inuitive healer ...

Helped me get closer to my children.......2006-08-01
At first I thought this book would be too "fruity" for me. I am not particularly New Age, and the talk of aura cleansing and energy fields was a little offputting to me. But I decided to give it a try anyway. My daughter, who is almost 3, has an almost eerie insight into the way others in our family are feeling, and I wanted to explore and nurture this facet of her personality. I am glad I did. I have reread this book several times now (something I rarely do) and the exercises at the end of each chapter have led me to do a lot of personal reflection on the way I was raised and the way that in turn affects my relationships with my children. I feel that as a result of those reflections I am not only nurturing my daughter's intuition but I am closer emotionally to her, and a better parent to her, as a result. Pick up a copy and give it a read; you may be surprised at what happens in your family.
Learning to Trust Comes From the Start.......2005-02-22
It is said that before children are trained to become human beings they are so truthful. Why? They are not yet trained in the art of denial. Their minds are clear enough to know an innate truth. Children have a wisdom all their own. Kids may be little but they are far more in tune with the what's so than adults. The Wise Child is a a program about nurturing this gift because the payoffs for a heightened awareness is positive. Being in tune is about going towards the positive and getting away from danger fast. Parents who believe in having an intuitive child will love this book.
I've also considered this a book for those who were somehow taught to shut down their intuitive abilities at a young age. So if you feel like reparenting your inner child towards a state of inner knowing ... this may be for you too.
Learn how to create an environment that honors intuition!.......2001-04-04
The author has written such a beautiful book - filled with information, tools, reflections, and "exercises" -sure to help you (and your child) expand your awareness of intuition as well as how to embrace and share those "gut feelings". My favorite tool in this book was learning how when I'm apart from loved ones, I can imagine a protective light surrounding them, that keeps them safe and sends them my love. This book is truly a powerful, nurturing guide. Enjoy!
An outstanding book for parents!.......2001-02-01
This book has truly changed the way I am interacting with my children. I originally bought it because people have told me my second son (of three) is extremely intuitive and I should learn some special techniques to use with him; however, what I love most about this book is that it applies to ALL CHILDREN and will help any caring parent create a more loving environment for their family. And, I have read it twice already (something I rarely do...) I have pages marked, paragraphs underlined, and notes in the margins. I even made a "cheat sheet" to hang on the fridge for quick reference. I was going to loan it to a friend but I don't want to let go of my copy, which is why I am on this site; I am ordering it for three friends!!! This book is worth every penny and more. Read it!
Book Description
Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) and Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) became friends in the mid-1930s in Paris. Both were seeking a way out of surrealism that would lead back to reality. Giacometti returned to life studies, Cartier-Bresson exchanged his brush for a camera. The content of this volume revolves around the many mutual resonances in the work of these two great artists. The book opens with shots of Giacometti taken by Cartier-Bresson over a period of three decades. At the same time, the inner workings of the artists' friendship is illuminated by a comparison between the two as draughtsmenboth searching for the 'instant décisif'and by the question of how the photographs of one and the paintings and drawings of the other are used in por-traiture. This is a unique encounter of two giants of 20th century art and photography! In their essays, Tobia Bezzola, curator at the Kunst-haus Zurich and Yves Bonnefoy, poet and writer, not only follow the traces of this exceptional friendship with accuracy, but also place the work and visual dialogue between the two creative voices within the frame of the history of surrealist and Modern Art.This book was produced in collaboration with Henri-Cartier Bresson, the Alberto Giacometti Foundation and the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris.
