ASIN: 0807824445
Release Date: 1998-11-25 |
Book Description
Union general John Pope was among the most controversial and misunderstood figures to hold major command during the Civil War. Before being called east in June 1862 to lead the Army of Virginia against General Robert E. Lee, he compiled an enviable record in Missouri and as commander of the Army of the Mississippi. After his ignominious defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run, he was sent to the frontier. Over the next twenty-four years Pope held important department commands on the western plains and was recognized as one of the army's leading authorities on Indian affairs, but he never again commanded troops in battle.
In 1886, Pope was engaged by the National Tribune, a weekly newspaper published in Washington, D.C., to write a series of articles on his wartime experiences. Over the next five years, in twenty-nine installments, he wrote about the war as he had lived it. Collected here for the first time, Pope's "war reminiscences" join a select roster of memoirs written by Civil War army commanders.
Pope presents a detailed review of the campaigns in which he participated and offers vivid character sketches of such illustrious figures as Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. Clearly written and balanced in tone, his memoirs are a dramatic and important addition to the literature on the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Two Cheers for General Pope .......2006-10-03
Peter Cozzens and Robert Girardi provided an excellent service to Civil War scholars by assembling the collected newspaper essays that General John Pope wrote in way of reflecting on his Civil War career. Best known for his stunning defeat at Second Bull Run and his bravado, a very different Pope emerges here. Often witty, Pope left excellent sketches of President Lincoln (an old friend of the family), Edwin Stanton, as well as numerous commanders of both the North and the South. Pope is excellent in capturing the chaos and incompetence of John Fremont's command in Missouri in the first days of the war. His scathing attack on Henry Halleck's torturously slow move towards Corinth reveals the extent of this wasted opportunity. But Pope is best known for two battles: Island Number 10 and Second Bull Run. His account of Island Number 10 is a bit rushed though certainly through. While Pope does an excellent job of describing the layout of his forces at the start of the Bull Run campaign, he relies on official records a bit too much and seems willing to let the matter slide. That is understandable, after all Pope was humiliated by Lee at Second Bull Run. The problem is that the Second Bull Run campaign was Pope's moment in the sun and he has little to say on it. With the large exceptions of George McClellan and Fitz John Porter, who Pope believed deliberately undermined his command, there is little bitterness. Even Nathaniel Banks, who picked a fight at Cedar Mountain against Pope's orders and was mauled by Stonewall Jackson, comes off relatively unscathed. It seems as if all of Pope's fire was being saved for McClellan and Porter, as can be seen in the memoirs as well as in a correspondence with the Comte de Paris which is included in an appendix. The memoirs reveal Pope to be much more intelligent and witty than his traditional blowhard persona would indicate though the bile is still there certainly in the cases of Porter and McClellan. One can see from these memoirs why so many men, including Grant and Sherman, seemed to like and respect Pope and while others had no use for the man. All in all, an interesting and revealing memoir to some long neglected parts of the war though be warned the main course, Second Bull Run, remains a bit bland.
A "fresh" take on an old subject!.......1999-01-24
Peter Cozzens rightly compares General John Pope's memoires with those of U.S. Grant and W.T. Sherman. This is a highly readable account from one of the participants in some of the least-understood episodes of the Civil War.
Of course, Pope's writings are not "new." As Cozzens relates, the entries which make up this book appeared in the National Tribune and other Reconstruction-era publications. However, they have spent the last century forgotten by the general public. Cozzens and his colleague, Gerardi, have done a great service both to Civil War scholars and to the casual Civil War buff by bringing Pope's reminiscences and analyses to life.
What is most surprising is the humor, candor and generosity of a man who has gone down in history as a narrow, bitter mediocrity. For example, devotees of General Lee, whose comments largely consigned Pope to history almost as a barbarian, will be surprised to read Pope's poetic evocation of the beauty of Virginia and the nobility of its citizens.
In a similar vein, readers will benefit from a "fresh" take on a wide range of issues -- such as the relationships between Lincoln, Stanton, Halleck and McClellan -- from a player very much in the know, but whose views have gone largely unremarked.
My only cautionary note would be that an appreciation of this volume depends upon a basic understanding of the events of the war, and perhaps also upon an introductory familiarity with the post-war debates on those events.

Regarding sense of betrayal and confusion over LG's end.......2007-05-15
The sense of bewilderment and confusion many of LG's readers experience by the contrast between the latter books and her most popular book, EMYLIW, simply rests in the lack of recognition by her readers that the key concepts and ideas in the former were simply not hers. In my opinion, having read EMYLIW I was saddened to discover that virtually the entire book was a plagiarism of the Abraham-Hicks material (an opinion I also share regarding The Secret). She attests to this herself in a rather patronizing acknowledgement of the Hickses in the forward to the book. Her readiness to excuse herself from the ethics of ownership -- like her violation of the principle of anonymity espoused in Alcoholics Anonymous as she did in her first book -- is not realized by most of her readership. Her last two books, alas, are at least primarily her stuff. I would encourage her saddened and disappointed fans to read and listen to the Abraham-Hicks books and CDs which still unwaveringly, and authenticly, apply the Law of Attraction to our everyday life experiences.
WOW.......2007-05-15
Lynn Grabhorns explanation of how we got here, why we are here, and what is going on, Is a real eye opener, and all makes perfect sense. I love her down to earth style, and her honesty. She has made her journey home, and I look forward to the moment when I can tell her just what an impact she had on my life. I have no doubt, I'll be seeing her!
It was ahead of its time.......2007-04-16
I am a big fan of Lynn Grabhorn, especiall her book, Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting. When this book first arrived I began to read. It wasn't for me. I was lost. I thought she was crazy for writing this. I thought she might have been smoking something.
Now four years later. I picked it up again. I was getting ready to donate it to the local library. Then I sat down and began reading again. Whoa! It made sense. It was still a little wild but it began to make sense.
They say that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Lynn was ahead of her time when she write this, however, its time now.
When is enough, enough? When do we have a modern-day tea party? When do we stand up for our rights? This book gets you thinking even through its unique conversation.

Courageous, Excellent Work.......2007-04-13
Personally, I am grateful for Lynn's courageous effort in writing this book and making sure it was published. From my own personal experience and study, the information she is sharing in this book is accurate, valid and helpful. The naysayers who ridicule a woman they've never met, attack and slander and slur her are very amusing, and they speak loud and clear about who and what they really represent, stand for and which side they've chosen.
After this read, Lynn's first book, "Excuse Me Your Life Is Waiting" has even greater meaning, relevance and importance. Like any true representative of truth and Light, who have been mocked, ridiculed and even killed (Jesus the Christ, Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr.), Lynn's detractors and critics can join the millions who were & are misguidedly wrong and greet their dark, shallow, pious demise as they so choose.
READ THIS BOOK! Your life and all of Life are waiting on you...
This is what The Secret will do to you.......2007-03-22
The dangerous side of New Age is often mental illness, psychological distress, and distorted view of reality. There is a side that The Secret and Conscious Creation junkies don't tell you ... and it is that the spirit world is composed of light and dark. Playing with negative entities is a recipe for disaster. Yes Lynn Grabhorn had a nervous breakdown ... a direct result of her being spiritually tampered by the woo-woo. Beware of things that tickle your eyes for they will blind your eyes and much much worse.

I love the allrecipes web site and this book is a great companion to it. You can find a lot of their more popular dishes in this book and they are very good and easy to make. Some of the stand outs: Angel Chicken Pasta is one of their 1000+ reviewed recipes and its included in this book, as well as Iced Pumpkin cookies (yummy!!). The best thing is that you can check the Allrecipes' web site to see what other people suggest as helpful hints for the recipes in this book. Great gift for people who like to cook or just starting out to cook. Love this book!!!
Incredible cooking made easy.......2003-06-26
I love to cook but have a hard time picking good recipes. I have totally been in love with the All recipes website for over a year now. I'm now in love with their cookbooks. We always rate every recipe in our home on a scale of 1 to 10 and only cook the 10's again. I have more 10's in the allrecipes cookbooks than in any other on my shelf.
My family thinks I'm an incredible cook, but All Recipes makes it so easy. This is the BEST! (Great for brides and grooms getting their start. A good meal on the table will make for a better year or so getting started!)

The Painted Kitchen, Henny Donovan demonstrates how with some paint and basic tools anyone can transform a drab, dated kitchen to the most welcoming room in the house. Add new doorknobs, maybe some gold leaf or colored wax for embellishment, and the heart of the home is once again stylish and a pleasure to use.
Organized by color -- naturals and off-whites, yellows, reds, blues, greens, black and gray -- and complete with comprehensive step-by-step instructions and photographs,
The Painted Kitchen offers the principles of color, choosing color, and working with man-made finishes. Full of inspiration and eminently practical, this book shows how to:
prepare old or damaged natural and manmade surfaces for painting
work with laminates, raw and painted wood, melamine, and fiberboard
choose colors that work with the room's lighting
co-ordinating colors to create ambience
choose the right faux finish for your cupboards
create the most popular faux effects: colorwashing, distressing, glazing, dragging, combing, stippling, sponging, rag-rolling, spattering, craquelure, crackle glazing, relief stenciling, textured combing, stamping, and decoupage
use luxurious embellishments: gold leaf, colored waxes, metallic paints, molding and polishing
work with exciting products: venetian plaster, texture paints, liming wax, graphite varnish.
mix universal tints
More than 16 innovative projects, each with four variations, offer choices for everyone, including:
blue-and-white Portuguese-style folk art
vinegar-glaze fingerprinting
birch wood graining with faux ebony and ivory inlay
terra cotta polished plaster with copper squares
liming over a marquetry-style woodwash
vine-leaf stipple, gingham checks, duck-egg speckle
distressed paintwork and hand-painted script.
An extensive list of North American sources rounds out this excellent how-to reference.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-09-29
I really liked this book. The ideas were original and creative and I hadn't seen them in other books of the same genre. The step by step instructions were good although the finish I chose required a lot of special tools that I had to purchase. It would be nice if there had been an indication of cost for the various ideas, although once I picked my favorite, it wouldn't have mattered.
Great Kitchen Cabinet Ideas.......2006-01-10
This is a good book that provides lots of ideas on ways to paint your kitchen cabinets. The first chapter discusses preparing the surface and things like matching door styles with the paint effect you want. The rest of the chapters are divided by colors. Of course, any of the techniques could be used with alternate colors.
One of the chapters includes a step-by-step description, with photographs, that show how to turn flat doors into paneled doors. Some of the instructions are incomplete and appear to assume some knowledge. For example, "make sure the rectangle is aligned "square" to the door", even a brief description of how to make sure it's square might be helpful to some readers.
I liked this book because there were some very inventive ideas for decorating doors including decoupage, hand-painted script, combing and relief impasto stenciling (using impasto, a thick textue paint that produces a raised finish). Even though some of the steps don't include all the details needed if you are a beginner, I think for the most part you would be able to complete the projects by using both the text and photographs.
The Good, Bad & Not-So Ugly.......2001-11-06
It wasn't what I was expecting but maybe what I want doesn't exist. With that explanation out of the way - I must say it's really one of the better kitchen cabinet idea books out there. It has great photos, a large quantity of ideas and is very informative about various products, equipment and necessary prepartion. It's chapters are broken down by color which makes it easy to skim through the book and find what you're interested in without having to read every chapter to learn what you need to know. The "bad" part is that the technique directions are sometimes not too specific or clear so it's best to just use the book for ideas and refer to a book on painting techniques for more explicit directions if you're very dependent on step by step directions. Other than that, I'd really recommend this book to anyone who is looking for cabinet update ideas without the expense of buying all new ones.

Funny..........2007-01-04
This book is the follow up to "So, You are going to be a Dad?" from the same Author. ANd the first book was awesome, this b second one is also really funny and the sometimes sarcastic humor is just great !!
Enjoy !!
the dirty goods for new dads.......2002-03-18
As a 46 year old father of 2 young children, I have found this book to be very informative and very humorous(actually at times horrifying for fathers to be). The book could be classified as humorous horror for fathers. Peter Downey touches on all important aspects of childrearing in a down-to-earth, easy to read, practical, "lets get our hands dirty on this" fashion. Fathers with children will really identify with the problems discussed in this book. He doesn't shy away from touchy topics like sex, nudity in front of the children or physical discipline. He's obviously read the "professionals" on childrearing and his advice on how to deal with the many problems we dads encounter reflects this, but is also heavily flavoured with his own personal strategies developed on the frontlines of being a dad to 3 children himself. Of course, if you're a perfect dad, doing everything right or if you're not a dad you may want to read the book for it's humour, with which Peter is not stingy.
Laugh out loud funny and very helpful!.......2002-01-11
A great book! Mr. Downey entertains while delivering important, every-day advice to new dads. Dad's will laugh out loud and feel re-assured that they're not total failures at fatherhood. With his unpretentious writing style and unique brand of wit, Mr. Downey covers everything from baby's first steps to "permanent" birth control options, and he never fails to entertain. Dad's can only hope that Mr. Downey continues to share his thoughts and experiences through his children's pre-pubescent and teen years.
It's about time!.......2001-12-29
Finally, a down-to-Earth, no-holes-barred reference book for new Dads. No fancy terminology - just creative terminology. No detailed psychological analysis from a group of doctors who pride themselves on using 10-syllable words - just the blunt facts from an everyday-Dad's point of view. An extremely humorous, yet insightful view into Dadism.
A perfect follow-up to Downey's "So You're Gonna Be A Dad". I could only hope he continues his wizardry of words addressing prepubescent teenagers!!
A MUST READ for all Dads: Old and New.......2001-12-09
Downey's book is a must read for all dads, old and new to this game of parenting. I was the fortunate recipient of this book, and having read Downey's earlier book, "So You're Gonna Be A Dad," I knew immediately that Downey would deliver with hilarious material that would make a difference in raising my two daughters. I have not been disappointed.
One significant diifference between Downey's book and others is that his approach diminishes the anxiety that comes with being a dad. He lets you know that there's a lot of other guys going through the same things, and they're all doing just fine.
Perfect holiday gift--better yet, the PERFECT gift to give Dad when his son or daughter turns two. I give Downey's book, "Dads, Toddlers, and the Chicken Dance" the highest rating possible: *****.

Book Description
Frederick Law Olmsted is famous for his urban landscape designs: Central Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and Franklin Park in Boston. Olmsted devoted much of his later life to this work. What was the source of this creative energy and imagination in his fascinating years? Melvin Kalfus is the first author to examine Olmsted's troubled, sometimes tragic childhood and adolescence in a search for the inner sources of his creative imagination. Kalfus argues that Olmsted's distressing early experiences fired his ambition and led him so obsessively to seek the world's esteem through his works. Kalfus also looks at Olmsted's varied early career during which he worked as an apprentice merchant, a seaman, a farmer, a manager of a mining plantation in California, a journalist, and author of three istorically important books on slavery, and as the General Secretary of the Civil War's Sanitary Commission, and enormous project organized to provide medical aid to Union soldiers.
