Worth the price, but has its flaws.......2001-06-21
Here we go. I am a naturalist who is trying to increase my fungi knowledge. I found this book for $5 at a national book selling chain, and grabbed it up quick. The book itself is worth the $20 Amazon asking price, but it has a serious drawback that I find most depressing. There is basically NO information on distribution, and since the book covers the mushrooms of the northern hemisphere, that is definately something that should have at least been attempted to include. I know that numerous mushrooms are found all over, but come on, give me some type of clue as to where it is actually found!! Now, for the higher points, excellent photos of each species, good habitat descriptions, the author points out species that may be confused, and details on each species edibility. The lack of distribution for an otherwise excellent field guide will only allow me to give 3 stars. Mrs. Polese, if you took the time to write such a good field guide, why didn't you make it GREAT by including the distributions?

If you're living a hectic lifestyle, Quiet Places of Massachusetts will make you want to pack your bags immediately and head for New England. If you already live there, this book will help you get to know its peaceful secrets even better.
With several New England guidebooks to his name, Tougias is an able and experienced guide to his home state. His tour of Massachusetts's pastoral areas is organized by region and includes western, central, and eastern Massachusetts as well as Cape Cod. For each region, he includes itineraries that wind through historic towns, along rivers, and across covered bridges, as well as a hand-drawn map that makes it easy to follow the route he lays out. Phone numbers for parks and other local attractions are listed, as well as a few lodging suggestions. Outdoor lovers especially will appreciate this book, which points out good places for hiking, biking, birding, and watching wildlife.
Tougias blends history and personal anecdotes with his travel information, making this first-person guidebook a pleasure to read even if you only get as far as your couch. --Rebecca Agiewich

Interesting book, but ebook restictions limit its value.......2001-07-29
A different style of book with a unique approach to traveling in Massachusetts. The content is worth 4 or 5 stars. But this book does not allow printing! In the case of a travel ebook, this is unfortunate. Are we expected to take a PC with us on our travels? Until such tight restrictions are lifted, this book's value is limited.
Interesting and charming.......2001-04-20

Customer Reviews:
A Great Contarian Indicator of the Busted Internet Bubble.......2000-12-21
When books about the best 100 Internet stocks to own come out, you know you are near the market peak. Sure enough, as I write this, these stocks are down about 50 percent since the book was published. Yet, you will look in vain in this book for suggestions about selling overpriced Internet stocks short or watching cash levels and cash burn rate to see if companies will survive. By this time next year, many of these companies will be out of business.
Every new industry, every new technology, and every new way of competing enjoys a brief period of euphoria on Wall Street. Usually, the end comes within five years . . . or sooner if major disappointments creep up before then. The surest part of the Internet development was the inevitable cataclysmic fall, which was scheduled for either 2000 or 2001. It looks now like both years will have this characteristic. Again, there is no mention of this phenomenon in this book.
Why then did I give the book two stars, rather than one? Well, it's near Christmas, so I wanted to say something nice. I think you can use this book as a guide to web sites that might be worthwhile visiting, at least until the companies go out of business. I graded it two stars for its web site information. I found a few that had good material that I had not visited before.
If I could, I would rate it a zero or as a negative number for investment advice.
Now, there may be a good day to buy Internet stocks in the future. But this book won't help you figure out when or what to buy.
To the best of my knowledge, there is yet to be a good book written about investing in Internet stocks. So continue to be careful. One thing I can guarantee is that the day when there are 100 good stocks to buy related to the Internet is well into the future.
Avoid overpriced stocks and books about them, unless they are guides to short selling. Buy a lottery ticket instead. You have about the same chance of winning, and you'll lose less money this way.
Solid advice.......2000-08-23
As a financial advisor it is very often difficult to keep up with all aspects of all stock categories available to my clients. Most especially internet stocks. This is a class of stock that both frightens and excites my clients and often brings the most questions.
It is comforting to know that this book, "100 Best Internet Stocks to Own" by Greg Kyle, is now available so that I can recommend it with confidence to my clients as a very solid tool that will help them to understand and identify the strengths, weaknesses and pitfalls of this market catagory.
It is my belief that this book can be used as one of the key guidebooks when contemplating an investment in internet stocks. The feedback from my clients confirm this.
Good for beginners.......2000-06-29
This is a good introduction to Internet stocks. It contains 40 page explanation of Internet and how to invest in it. The next 210 pages are all company information, with author's opinion on the companies. One thing the book misses is to cover Cisco, Sun Micro, Oracle, EMC, and so forth. The author claims that they don't belong to the new Internet era stocks (not the correlated group), but any investor who would like to invest in the Internet should know about Cisco and Sun Micro too, as the investor probably care less whether they belong to the correlated group than whether they can capture a good Internet-related investment.

Customer Reviews:
This Book has nothing to do with Gene Wilder the Actor!.......2004-10-27
It struck me as odd why Gene Wilder would be interested in Internet Stock - maybe it was his hobby, or perhaps in the passing years he had found himself a whole new career via his computer. But no.
Amazon have credited Mr Wilder incorrectly as being the co-author of this work; they even have it linked to his DVD's and his (genuine) writing. You wouldn't know this unless you opt to go look at a huge scan of the book's cover where all will be revealed to you: the co-author is Gene WALDEN.
Poor Mr. Walden, his one claim to fame snatched cruelly from his hands by a typographical error. Never mind. With any luck, Amazon will credit you playing Willy Wonka.
Peggy's Follow-up Review-3 years later.......2003-10-20
The Dot.com has dot.bombed--and this cipher selection stands as mute testimony to the reality that these two "rang the bell at the top" of the internet bubble by rushing this embarrasing collation into print.
Of their "Top 10" THREE are no longer in business, or are barely able to stay listed on exchanges, and the other 7 are equally ugly.
When Walden wrote his self-aggrandizing review, he stated there would be the potential for a 75% swing DOWN in a stock. HE A) wrote that after the bottom fell out of internet stocks, B) failed to warn that the "upper number" was closer to 98% swing down, not 75%, and C) failed to give eBay its due, a very very successful internet stock "to own."
And they BOTH missed PayPal, the young internet upstart--in business when they wrote this tout, who blew eBay's Billpoint in house payment service plumb off the race track as well.
Those who want to know what to short and when to short should be the only ones to buy Walden's advisory books...he's rung the bell at the top more than once by his cookie cutter, rush to press, just as the "game" is over and the momentum players surge to a new gambit tack. A review of his titles bears out this historic reality.
Better book exists elsewhere.......2000-07-28
I agree with Peggy, this book doesn't have much meat even just for surveying the internet stocks landscape. "100 Best Internet Stocks to Own" by Greg Kyle does a much better job in this respect by providing more information on each company's background, major turn points of stock prices in their history, analysis of business challenges as well as opportunities. More informative and more insightful. Put these two books side by side, you'll notice the difference in no time.
A reader from New York..........2000-06-02
Peggy Mannix has completely missed the point (and value) of Walden's latest book, and apparently didn't read his introduction. Yes, many of the stocks have gone down in value due to the correcting marketplace, but the point of the book is to provide guidance for those of us who want to include Internet companies as a part of our portfolios. I found the discussion about the many facets of the Internet marketplace extremely helpful in understanding how the new economy operates. As the title says, these stocks are "for the long run." If you're looking for get rich quick picks, look elsewhere. If you're looking for solid advice about incorporating internet stocks into your portfolio, Walden's book can be of tremendous help.
A Great Source For Internet investing.......2000-06-02
What a find! This book lays out in clear, easy to understand terms the important points of Internet investing. I learned the ins and outs of how to invest in Internet stocks, and was able to get a real understanding of the key sectors of the Internet economy. The profiles of these 100 top companies were concise and well-written, as I've come to expect from Gene Walden's other 100 Best Stock books. And the tables and graphs in each profile provided a good perspective on the 100 companies. It's the best source yet for Internet investing! I would recommend it for any investor who wants to make big money in the Internet market.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book!.......2006-08-24
Thank you Barb Chainey for a wonderful technique book. I'm so tired of project books that give you projects but no meat as to how to do it(Quilt as desired). Even if you're a machine quilter, this book is wonderful. Her other book, The Essential Quilter, is also a must have in my opinion!
You'll love it.......2004-12-04
I think this is my favorite of all the quilt books I own. (lots of 'em)If it drives you batty when your piecing patterns say "quilt as desired" because you don't know what that is, this will really help. Chaney offers lots of ideas and illustrations so you can decide what you like and what you don't, some instruction and hints/tips on marking, and some quilting patterns for some of the designs in the book. There are loads of piecing pattern books and "basics" books out there, but most really skimp on the effects the quilting will have on your finished product; That's the main focus of this book!
Great Variety.......2003-03-01
Even though I am a relatively new quilter I find that I have accumulated a number of quilt tops that get stalled because I cannot figure out how to quilt the finished product. Nothing in my imagination seemed to be good enough for the work that already went into the quilt top. This book opened my eyes as to what patterns work with what. I couldn't imagine putting curves on a fence rail! The book shows examples of the same background quilt top with a variety of quilting patterns applied to it. There are also pictures of actual quilts that the author "critiques" which is very helpful. I might be able to tell that I don't like the "finished" product but I cannot tell what I don't like about it. Her comments and instruction are all very useful.
I would recommend this book to anyone that gets stuck on what type of quilting pattern to apply to your quilt top.
A must have book for your quilting library.......2001-06-30
When it comes to the quilting part of making a quilt I usually struggle to find designs that will make the quilt stand out. This book has been a tremendous help for me in this area. It is well worth the price.
Excellent Resource Guide.......2000-06-15
As a faily new quilter, I had found little to help me plan quilting designs. Chainey's book has pages & pages of illustrations, showing several quilting designs for many traditional quilt blocks. Additionally, the text gives helpful principles in chosing designs. I'm feeling much bolder & more imaginative as I plan new quilt projects. This is an excellent resource book that I will use many, many times. Well worth the money.

An invaluable guide to a neglected area of comics history........2005-10-06
An updated, and substantially rewritten, edition of the author's previous "A Century of Great Women Cartoonists", this lavishly-designed book covers an area of comics history of which even the majority of diehard fans remain sadly ignorant.
Charged with Robbins' characteristic blend of didacticism and fangirl enthusiasm, the forgotten heroines of the graphic art are lovingly portrayed, with copious illustrations showing us exactly why the careers of these women deserved to be more widely recognized. An illuminating and entertaining read, with a lively and colourful layout that lures the reader's eye.
A Change of Pace.......2005-01-08
This book by author Trina Robbins is a newer version of an earlier one. It is a book based generally on female cartoonists
as opposed to men.
Ms. Robbins ,referred to as a herstorian, has done a extensive
research into the history of comics for both men and women, and this book highlights women and female chararacters such as GoGirl! which she created with Artist Anne Timmons .
Very nice overview.......2003-04-20
This is a big, fun, overview of women cartoonists from about 1895 to now. It would make a great gift. Lots of full-color reproductions of the work and some quotes from the artists make this a great introduction for anyone interested in women artists. That being said, it is really kind of a "coffee table" book in that the text is secondary. There is no analysis, just a chronological introduction of each artist, and the nature of the book requires that the author can only briefly mention incredibly important cartoonists like Alison Bechdel in a sentence, or not even mention Roz Chast at all. Still, you can't do everything in one book, and some people would not be interested in heavy reading. This book should serve as an excellent appetizer for those who will seek out more about these talented women, and to check out more writing by Trina Robbins.
