One was a robust charmer given to fits of passion, whose physical appeal could captivate women as easily as cajole colleagues. The other was a frail, melancholy man of quiet intellect, whose ailments drove him eventually to alcohol and drug addiction. Born into different social classes, they were as opposite as men could be. Yet these sons of Georgia, Robert Toombs and Alexander H. Stephens, became fast friends and together changed the course of the South.
Writing with the style and authority that has made him one of our most popular historians of the Civil War, William C. Davis has written a biography of a friendship that captures the Confederacy in microcosm. He tells how Toombs and Stephens dominated the formation of the new nation and served as its vice president and secretary of state. After years of disillusionment, each abandoned participation in the government and left to its own fate a Confederacy that would not dance to their tune.
Davis traces this unlikely relationship from its early days in the Georgia legislature through the trials of secession and war, revealing how both men persevered during the war and developed a deep animosity for Jefferson Davis. He then chronicles their postwar lives up to the emotional moment when Toombs stood eulogizing his long-time friend at his funeral, just four months after Stephens was elected governor of the Georgia they had loved as much as one another.
Drawing extensively on primary sources, including Stephens's voluminous letters and Toombs's widely scattered papers, Davis tells how two men of different temperaments remained friends, out of step with all but a few and occasionally even with each other. He concentrates on their Confederate years, when the fraternity they shared had its greatest impact, to show how they embodied both the strengths and the weaknesses of the Confederacy.
While there are biographies of each man, none convey the significance--or the depth--of their friendship. Davis shows us how they loved the South as it once was, the Union as they thought it ought to have been, and the Confederacy of their dreams that never came to be. They lost all three, but through five decades of crisis, they never failed each other.

DaVIA Ha qritten many books and this is one of his better. Robert Toombs and Alexander H. Stephens are both important figures in the Confederacy and in American political history of the ante-bellum period. The book points out the intimacy of these two and gives an insight into the background of the Confederacy. It should not replace a biography of either of these two statesmen.
Narrow and personal focus help ruin the Confederate Govt........2001-10-22
Toombs and Stephen examplify the problems within the Confederate
government. These incredibly close friends of the strong Georgia delegation were powerful national political figures whose bitterness over personal issues, Toombs, and Stephens' strict constitutional views undermined the Davis administration. Stephens never seriously worked with the dominating Davis and was later opposed to the administration over constitutional issues in the face of bigger war emergencies. Toombs loses the opportunity to become the first President by his bellicose enthusiams for the office coupled with drink which lowers his place in the new government and raises Stephens' star. Excellent description of both men including Toombs rise as Secretary of State, his anti-Davis stance and his mercurial and short military career. The author also covers the end of the era of both men including Stephens' attempts to rewite history in a light more favorable to him then his actions were in reality. These two powerful men and closest of friends could not see the big picture of the war seeking their narrow views in spite of the war effort. Together with Governor Brown of Georgia, they represented a crisis of independence within the Confederacy that no doubt contributed to the fall of the Confederate government.
What a Delightful Little Book!.......2001-08-09
What a delightful little book! And frankly, I don't often use the term "delightful" in a book review. *The Union That Shaped the Confederacy* is a swiftly-paced, lightly written work that details the friendship of a pair of Georgians - Robert Toombs and "Little Alec," Alexander Stephens.
It is very important to know exactly what you are not getting with this book. You will not get a standard biographical treatment of Stephens and Toombs, and author Davis makes this abundantly clear from the outset. You will not receive great insights into the minds and thinking of these two men, but will come to appreciate the antebellum, war-time, and post-bellum periods of American history as these two men saw it.
William C. Davis does not attempt to make his subjects either heroes or villains on the Confederacy's stage. They were what they were - friends who for the most part held similar political beliefs, worked for the same ends, and became, as the war progressed, more and more bitterly opposed to the administration of Jefferson F. Davis.
Because of the nature of the work, the reader receives a slice of Civil War-era history from a perspective he or she would not likely get. Along the way, one receives insights into the functioning (and dysfunction) of the Confederacy's Executive Branch, as well as the building of the "loyal opposition" to Davis's administration. We see the strengths and weaknesses of these two prominent Georgians, as they struggled to establish a new nation out of the old.
Davis's writing style is loose and fast, and almost reads as if a good friend is telling a story of another pair of friends. To some, this may be distracting, but I found it to be just part of the story. *The Union That Shaped the Confederacy* can be read quickly, with a great sense of satisfaction. This book comes highly recommended.
Confederate Founding Fathers.......2001-03-30
This book documents the friendship and political careers of two of the Confederacy's most important statesmen. Davis does a nice job of providing historical detail while also weaving a readable story. However, at times, the prose is too informal and almost needlessly dramatic. Moreover, much of the history is quite derivative, as I learned very little new information about the men in question or the political tenets of the Confederacy. His previous book, "A Government of Our Own," is a much better historical treatment.

Worth every penny. This isn't a diet book so much as it is a book about how food affects your brain, and what you can do to get the results you want. While the information is fantastic the writting could be better. If you are looking for a "just the facts" presentation of the information, see the website. The book is couched in very friendly, over explained, language, that wanders around to the point rather than just delivering the information in a straightforward manner.

I found this book to be a good read. Eliminating sugar and increasing protein is helpful but is not the entire answer the problem of depression, and learned habits. This book has the foundation of many other reduced carb books, but with its own twist. Other books that are similiar, and are just as good but without the pretense are: the fat flush, the zone, atkins diabetes revolution, and you on a diet. The experience in the radiant recovery online community was one of bullying and put-downs, even by the author herself. She does not want anyone to speak out with any knowledge except those she has hand selected, who will follow her every command. The control even exists in her radiant cat group. So unless you have no thoughts or opinions I would steer clear and find another source for your nutrition wisdom. And those hand selected people are volunteers, not paid sheep. When she finds she cannot bully you into silence, she will act as if humble and admit she is not knowledgeable about a subject. Such as the amino acid content in vegetarian foods. An area that is within her so called area of expertise.

Well, while I enjoyed the biochemical explanations for sugar addiction, the 'diet' itself is like so many out there now. Basically, stay away from sugars and white foods (except for that potato).. It also seems to embody some of the glycemic index theories.. All in all, I wasn't impressed.. It's helped so many people though, it might be worth a shot for someone else.. GOOD LUCK!
DesMaisons sold out.......2005-07-29
When I read Potatoes Not Prozac, I thought, "at last, a book on diet that doesn't focus on losing weight!" After all, food acts in the body in a much more complex way than simply making you lose or gain weight. Apparently DesMaisons decided to pick up on the weight-loss market and rewrite PnP for losing weight. I felt her style of explaining how I feel now and how I'm going to feel after doing her plan, little more than the common weight-loss testamonials you see in every second-rate diet advertisement. By the way, I have eliminated sugar from my diet and it has not "changed my life" or solved all my problems. The 4 billion dollar diet industry, which DesMaisons has become a part of with this book, banks on those types of claims.

I received this book as a gift this past Christmas. It is a collection of classic Betty Crocker recipes and some original creations. It is a compilation of mostly 'ole stand-by recipes that you would want to prepare for your family. Great for cupboard cooking...most of what you need to prepare the dishes you can find in your cupboard on any given night of the week.
This cookbook is NOT a "how-to" guide to cooking, nor was it intended to be. It is a sentimental look at how women's lives have evolved around and in their kitchens. What makes this book so invitng is that each recipe features a different "Betty Crocker" woman behind the cooking of each dish. There are also some interesting facts about Betty Crocker included throughout the text.
I would recommend this book as a gift to a seasoned cook who would appreciate the glimpses into some other women's lives. However, I definitely think that there are other titles that would offer more diverse recipes and new culinary ideas.

The stories which accompany the recipes are a nice touch and interesting to read. However, I have yet to try a recipe in this book that actually tasted decent. This book is for someone who wants to cook quick and easy meals not someone who is interested in quality and taste.

Published in 1998, this book features >200 classic Betty Crocker recipes accompanied by full color photos. The book features the winning recipes of 75 Betty Crocker contestants and their stories.
I found a lot of the recipes easy to make and with ingredients that were readily available. Featured Chapters include:

2. Lunch- soup, salads and sandwiches
3. Dinner- beef, chicken, fish and vegetarian meals
4. Sides/Breads
5. Desserts
The book also featured an introduction on the development of food icon Betty Crocker- from 1921 to present day. The real purpose of the book was to highlight the 75 women across America who developed their own recipes. My favorite recipes incude:
1. Strawberry muffins- delicious with a great strussel topping and suprisingly easy to make
2. Orange Currant Scones- i made this with dried cranberries instead of the harder to find currants
3. Popovers- rich and buttery

I received this cookbook as a christmas gift from my father-in-law. The recipes are easy to follow, with simple ingredients, and they are so good! There is a variety of recipes, from breakfast, to soups, to meatless meals, to desert, and everything in between! I have really enjoyed this cookbook because it doesn't strain my budget to cook from it, I am a young mom with a 13 month old baby so that is important to me! My husband has also enjoyed the recipes, we haven't yet found anything that we didn't like! I also sent this cookbook to my sister as a wedding shower gift! I would definitely recommend this cookbook to beginners and those who have been cooking for years and would like something new!

A bit out-of-date, but this well-written (if opinionated) and nicely illustrated book is easy to read and loaded with information on identifying and growing african violets, gloxinias, and other members of the Gesneriad family.

I'd still be married if only I'd found this book much earlier! Communication is all important, but you can get by without it, for a time. If you are looking to have the most incredible sex of your life, and are open-minded, this book is for you!!! My present partner and I are ALWAYS surprised at how deep and meaningful every encounter is. Even the 'quickies!!
Excellent Guide to Help Better Understand Both of You.......2000-06-17
The first 125 pages or so described my marriage to a tee! I can honestly say that if both of us had read this book we might still be married. That is a HUGE statement to make about a book, and obviously both parties have to WANT to change, but I believe this book can help. The book breaks down the typical men and women are different writings that are so prevelant nowadays. Yes we are different. But why are we different? How are we different? Dr. Scantling makes the argunment that there are four different sexual styles and each has it's own description, M.O., definition, traits and style. After reading her description it was fairly easy to figure out what I am. But, I found that I also had the traits of the other three styles as well. THAT is what is so key to this book. It provides the ability for the reader to not only identify with one's self but with one's mate. It is like having the answers to the SAT prior to taking the test. It also gives key talking points that can be used to open up a dialogue between you and your mate.
I highly suggest you pick this book up if your marriage or relationship is in trouble. As I stated in my opening paragraph, if I had this about 18-20 months ago I might have not gotten divorced. Keep the lines of communication open between both of you, don't demeen your partner, remember why you married them and most of all - BOTH OF YOU MUST WANT TO DO THIS.

This is one of the worst sexual help books I've read. She doesn't even address ISD (inhibitied Sexual Desire) which is a common problem among women my age (25-30), instead she talks about some group therapy nonsense and psuedo-animal roles via sexual archtypes. YAWN. This book educates no one. It seems like this doctor helped out some friends of hers through a rough patch and now she considers herself an expert. Kudos to the promotion people for the design and hype of the book...please DO NOT JUDGE THIS BOOK BY ITS COVER!

As a clinician, and sex therapist treating couples for over 20 years I often recommend, Dr. Scantling's book to anyone seeking more passion in their relationship. It is full of practical ideas for individuals and couples who want to deepen their capacity for intimacy .

I thought from the cover that this book would be about sex, or at least interesting. But it's a real yawn. Lots of pseudo-psychobabble that doesn't make much sense. If you're looking for something good about sex, you'd be far better off with anything by Lonnie Barbach, or (if you're into psychobabble, Dr. Judy Kuriansky). This book is a joke.

We use the term "modernism" almost exclusively to characterize the work of European and American writers and artists who struggled to portray a new kind of fractured urban life typified by mechanization and speed. Between the 1880s and 1930s, Latin American artists were similarly engaged—but with a difference. While other modernists drew from "primitive" cultures for an alternative sense of creativity, Latin American modernists were taking a cue from local sources—primarily indigenous and black populations in their own countries. In Mestizo Modernism Tace Hedrick focuses on four key artists who represent Latin American modernism—Peruvian poet César Vallejo, Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Hedrick interrogates what being "modern" and "American" meant for them and illuminates the cultural contexts within which they worked, as well as the formal methods they shared, including the connection they drew b! etween ancient cultures and modern technologies. This look at Latin American artists will force the reconceptualization of what modernism has meant in academic study and what it might mean for future research.
